Passage through
the corridors
of history
am St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai,
and I bear testimony to a great historical adventure.
Built into my masonry are mingled emotions of the German Jesuits
who came to India on their reise, or journey, more than 150 years ago.
Through my corridors have passed a remarkable group of people who,
of course, didn’t know at the time that they were so remarkable.
They formed the vanguard of an educated army of thousands launched
upon the world over the years.
What stories I could tell – of their whispered conversations,
their dreams and aspirations.
One thing I will talk about is the day girls were admitted to the college
for the first time.
That was in 1912.
They didn’t just add colour… they also challenged the boys
both in academics and sports.
The Xavier Institute of Management & Research shares the Xavier legacy of
great education wrapped in uncompromising values.
Will it live up to the challenge?

Two
Years
that are worth a lifetime
XIMR offers two different yet complementary learning experiences:
The Core Curriculum consists of a common foundation for all students in the fundamental practices of
business. This would include finance, marketing, leadership, negotiation, operations, strategy etc. In addition,
students become adept at communication and collaboration..
The Elective Curriculum consists of value-added courses with a global focus. They inculcate innovative,
holistic thinking, that leads to infinite possibilities - ‘Omnia Sunt Possibilia’.
It's a rigorous 9 am-to-9 pm day.
XIMR sets a challenging pace but believes that these two years are worth a lifetime.
The
Classroom:
a theatre of learning
Every day, a drama unfolds in the classroom. The subject develops and is debated over the course of the
discussion. You are challenged to reflect on the consequences of various situations and weave diverse points of
view into a coherent understanding of the subject. It is always interactive. Our methods of teaching is rooted in
active, participatory learning.
There are many learning opportunities, informal discussions, and experiences that immerse you in the subject…
engaging students and faculty in the practice of business management as it takes place in the real world.
Beyond
the classroom…
to the school of life
Painting
a new future…
with the art of marketing
Students take their knowledge and skills developed in the classroom outside the academic world… to projects
that make a difference to people's lives.
Walk through the narrow lanes and by-lanes of Talasari and you see beautifully painted mud huts. This is Warli, an art form
that has been handed down from generation to generation. Red mud, limestone, rice paste and charcoal are used to create
these delicate snapshots of daily life and culture. A folk dance, a marriage, a festival, coconut trees… they are all beautifully
captured as murals on walls and on lengths of khadi.
The result is an exciting collaboration between the students and the community.
The programmes are a unique interface between industry, business and rural clientele.
There are other forms of Warli but that of Talasari is richer in colour and design and more distinctive. The village artists are
scarcely aware of how they can turn their art into a worthwhile livelihood.
Participating in these projects, students have found their lives greatly enriched by the poor.
Our plan was to get groups of artists together and conduct exhibitions in metro cities. We could enlist Government help in
starting the programme. Catalogues of the artists' works could be distributed. E-selling through on-line sites could be used
as a promotion tool.
XIMR believes in moulding students to be better human beings for others.
Applying a host of marketing tools, we could help these artists literally paint a new future for themselves.
Survival
Spanish …
and how I learnt a new vocabulary of life
Spanish is not in our MMS (Master of Management Studies) programme. But it is one of the value-added subjects that we have to tackle as
students of XIMR.
I must confess that I found it very tough if not painful to start with. The phonology (sound units), morphology (word structure), syntax
(Language rules) and semantics (meaning of words) were all so difficult. There was grammar and more grammar.
I asked myself again and again, why I was subjecting myself to such torture! But slowly over the days and weeks, something happened. I
found it an incredible experience. It was a gift I was being given to explore a different culture and a different world.
Most important of all, I learnt that challenges are there to be overcome if you have the will and determination. By the end of the semester I
was speaking Spanish with my fellow classmates. It was a thrilling experience. I found that I was not only learning a new language, I was
learning a new vocabulary… of life.
And yes, I will go to Spain and even Latin America to try out my new-found language skills. And now for a confession: I want to return
home having mastered the salsa!
The Healing
Touch
For centuries, India's medicinal plants have been cherished for their healing powers.
The science of ayurveda has resulted in a range of formulations for the many diseases that afflict the people of the
country medicines, moreover, that are within the reach of the poor.
XIMR students worked with the Janhit Vikas Trust in the village of Tara to bring the benefits of ayurvedic medicine to
the adivasis and tribal people of the area.
From the plants grown in the region, special ayurvedic formulations have been developed for a range of diseases.
Preventive medicines have also been developed.
The students worked with doctors after understanding the special problems and conditions prevailing in the village.
Disease and suffering have been alleviated to a large extent.
Addressing the most human of problems has made the project specially worthwhile for XIMR students.
Turning students into responsible leaders
Academicians as well as industry leaders and
entrepreneurs make up the diverse faculty at
XIMR. Their one goal is to transform students
into professional managers capable of leadership
with responsibility once they leave the portals of
the institute.
Our faculty leads students in discussions that
challenge, provoke and inspire. Classrooms thus
become crucibles of learning, enabling students to
explore complex thoughts and embrace new
methods for business management.
