tassafaronga Village - Oakland Housing Authority
Tassafaronga Village FA C T S H EET Information provided is current as of January 12, 2013 OHA Mission Statement To assure the availability of quality housing for low income persons and to promote the civic involvement and economic self-sufficiency of residents and to further the expansion of affordable housing within Oakland. about Tassafaronga Village First developed in 1945 as housing for war workers, Tassafaronga Village was acquired in 1955 by the Oakland Housing Authority. In 1964, an 87-unit public housing development was constructed that, over the years, became distressed and began to attract crime and have a blighting influence on the neighborhood. In 2006, the OHA acquired adjacent parcels, demolished the distressed housing and employed urban design principles to mend the fabric of the neighborhood. Today, Tassafaronga Village is an award-winning new community that includes 157 sustainable and energy-efficient affordable rental homes. The buildings are interconnected by well-lit and landscaped pedestrian paths that lead to nearby community amenities including a park, recreation center, elementary schools, and public library.
