Perhaps that’s what Buddhists refer to as “a satori moment.” I experienced such a circumstance recently. Salim Al Nurridin is not someone with whom I have been acquainted for a long time, but he is someone whose thinking I’ve come to respect. He and I serve on the Southland Health Advisory Council of Cook County and we both have been on panels for some programs relating to healthcare and job-growth in the south suburbs. We both also are strong advocates for a Level I Trauma Center to be located at a site that will more conveniently meet the needs of residents of Chicago’s southside neighborhoods and of our south suburban communities. He is the chief executive officer for the Healthcare Consortium of Illinois. Recently at a Health Advisory Council meeting, Salim made a casual observation that created for me such a circumstance as what I describe above. His words exploded into all kinds of images in my mind: images that are directly related to business expansion and job creation. We were discussing how difficult it is for many persons to travel to Oak Forest Hospital to utilize the services that the Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS) now offers there. I think the feeling of most council members participating in the discussion – certainly the feeling that I held at the moment – was that Cook County needed to create some sort of a public transportation system to address that need. But that’s not the way Salim was thinking. Instead, he boldly and creatively explained that the need of some could become an opportunity for others. He saw the situation as a great chance for some entrepreneur to create a new transportation business that had the potential to be greatly successful. Furthermore, he envisioned such a business venture as a catalyst for bringing more jobs to our region. In the car on my way back from the meeting, I kept thinking about Salim’s concept. So often we see circumstances as burdens rather than opportunities. Another example: Cook County recently has enacted an ordinance that will require recycling or reuse of materials from demolition projects. While everyone agrees that such an ordinance is environmentally sound, some elected officials – myself included – have envisioned it also to be burdensome. The fact is, though, that ordinance may open the door for new businesses to be created and for more people to be put to work. It’s a far greater opportunity than it is a burden. I share these thoughts with you – members of the Park Forest business community – because some of you may be ideally situated to take advantage of such opportunities as described above and of many more that emanate from similar circumstances. As Salim Al Nurridin made me realize, a little research of new things on the horizon, and a little creative thinking about how they can be handled, might result in a successful business opportunity. If you have ideas along these lines, please feel free to contact the Park Forest Economic Development staff and share your thoughts. They might be able to point you in the right direction for developing new business ventures that address growing needs of our local community. John A. Ostenburg Mayor www.villageofparkforest.com Page 2 www.VillageofParkForest.com Volume 5, Issue 1 www.VllageofParkForest.com EDDM—Easier Way to Send Bulk Mail Congratulations to the 2013 Best of Chicago’s Southland ARE YOU A BUSINESS trying to get the attention of the local market? If so, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has a program to make it easier to do this. SEVEN OF Southtown Star’s annual Best in Chicago’s Southland East Region winners were Park Forest businesses! For the last 15 years, the Southtown Star polls their readers asking them for their favorite places to shop, eat, etc. in 60 different categories. All the winners are listed in a special supplement, and receive a framed certificate and window cling noting their winning status to place in their business location. The program is called Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM). Highlights of this program include a very low postage rate of 16 cents a piece plus the ability to send marketing mail without the traditional mailing permit. In addition, USPS created a new userfriendly website that allows you to identify your target neighborhoods, calculate the exact postage needed to reach those areas, and print all of the required bulk mail paperwork. The bottom line is if you’re marketing on a shoestring budget, this may be a very attractive option for you. If your best prospects are located near your business or in a particular local neighborhood, then Every Door Direct Mail may be the perfect marketing vehicle for you. The Postal Service has provided a double-incentive for the EDDM program; offering very low postage while removing many of the barriers to entry associated with traditional direct mail. Support Economic Development Advisory Group’s on going 3/50 project by Picking 3 businesses, Spend $50 each month and help Support YOUR local economy. Congratulations to all! CATERING SERVICE Southland Caterers www.southlandcaterers.com 319 Main Street, (708) 283-8272 Tips for What to Include on the Mail Piece...your mail piece should include an incentive for prospects to take action. The most obvious incentive is a coupon or special offer for people that receive the mail piece. Always be sure to require the recipient to bring in the mail piece to claim their special offer. This is a critical step that allows you to measure the success of a particular campaign. Regarding incentives, don’t feel obligated to offer the same incentive to all prospects. For instance, limiting your special offer to the first fifty respondents is a great way to add a sense of urgency to your offer. Another added benefit of this tactic is determining your ultimate cost for offering the incentive or discount because you know it will not exceed a certain quantity. And the sense of urgency added to your offer decreases the possibility that they will set your mailer aside and forget about the offer.
