We are further devoted to the education of the public regarding animal care and overpopulation. If you would no longer like to receive this newsletter or if you are getting duplicates, please call 320-234-9699 or e-mail: www.heartofminnesota.org Take in a few homeless animals and find them new loving families... sounds simple enough, huh? In Current Resident or 2010-2011 Officers and Board Members Officers: *President Anthony Anderberg *Vice-President Nancy Nackerud *Secretary Linda Anderberg *Treasurer Jody Wendorff Thank you to Franklin Printing in Glencoe, MN for Printing our Newsletter. Sponsors Needed! You’ve probably seen the “Pet of the Week” ads in the Hutchinson Shopper. These ads have proven highly successful in finding homes for the featured animals. Many people tell us they watch for the ad each week. Individuals or businesses are welcome to be a one-time sponsor, or sign on the schedule as a regular. They may have their name listed as the sponsor, or sponsor anonymously. The cost is $25 for each ad. For more information, call the shelter! Please help us to continue fulfilling our mission! I’d like to be a member of the Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter! My membership fee will include a one year subscription to the Shelter News, so I will always be on top of what’s going on at the shelter. I will also be able to vote at the annual meeting. I am enclosing a check or money order in the amount of $20.00. Pleased send my newsletter and updates to this address: Name__________________________________________________Email:____________________________ Street Address_____________________________________________________________________________ City, State, ZIP_______________________________________________Phone________________________ Please contact me about volunteer opportunities available with the shelter Board: Newly Elected 3 year term: Barb Otte Jolene Ellsworth Returning 3 year term: Jack Yates Roberta Yates Carolyn Vacek Larry Sorensen New One Year: Deb Rannow Kay Johnson Bill Wassennar Evonne Guthmiller County Representative: Bev Wangerin the beginning it may have been, with a non-profit status and a few members fostering animals in their homes we were off and running. As the organization grew many people working together multiplied everyone's efforts and again this year we're on track to help almost 500 animals. With this scale comes complexities that may not seem obvious: our animal shelter has all of the paperwork for a non-profit, the staffing needs of a small business, the medical needs of a vet clinic, and the maintenance needs for two buildings. Combined with that infrastructure is the customer service needed to handle thousands of visitors and telephone calls each year. Financially we do fairly well on cute puppies and young kittens, but for every animal adding to the bank there are always several that take time to find their family or who need medical care. Of course that's what an animal shelter is for, we deal in the currency of wags and purrs... but it's worth knowing that by the time we pay bills for staff, medical care, kennel care, utilities, and insurance it costs us about $150 per animal to run the shelter. Nationwide surveys show our cost is typical across most animal shelters with similar sizes and policies. Although adoption fees cover some portion of every animal's stay almost all of them need to be subsidized by our substantial fundraising efforts. Recruiting volunteers to pet kittens and walk well mannered dogs on warm afternoons is easy - recruiting to pull weeds and balance checkbooks is another matter all together... Many things related to running an animal shelter are anything but easy, but they are all rewarding because every weed pulled and dollar raised can make the life of a homeless pet that much better. As cold weather and the holiday seasons approach I hope you'll consider all of the easy (and hard) ways you can help too. Anthony Anderberg President What a great day for the 11th annual Pet Walk "Paws On Parade". Walkers and pets seemed to enjoy the new venue of the event being held indoors at the Agribition Building in the McLeod Co Fairgrounds.Participants enjoyed great music thanks to Angie Raddatz, entertainment thanks to Beans the Clown (George Quast), Demos by Doris Lamprecht, Sherri Eddy and Allie Thomson. Many vendors provided items of interest and plenty of food was available. $6,535.88 was raised this year. Remember, you don't have to have a pet or take part in the walk, just come out and enjoy the day. Barb Otte FEATURED VOLUNTEER‐ Jill Withers What is your favorite thing about volunteering at the shelter? I love being part of turning an animal’s life around. I like being able to make a very tough time in an animals life even a little easier. Getting an animal adopted is wonderful, but my greatest joy comes from the little accomplishments the animals make. The first time a scared dog wags its tail, the first time they experience a bath and being clean. When a dog learns that he doesn't have to fear you because you are not going to hurt him, or a dog learns how to learn. All these are my favorite moments. What has surprised you the most about your experience with HMAS? I was surprised how much I have enjoyed my time with the other volunteers. It has been a pleasure being involved with an organization with such dedicated people who have the same ideals I do. It is something I have never experienced before coming to the shelter. I started at the shelter in February 2007. I was unemployed and wanted something meaningful to do with my spare time. I chose the Heart of Minnesota because it doesn’t euthanize animals to make room for more. I have always loved animals and had volunteered with other organizations, but I lived in Hutchinson so I could do more with a shelter that was closer to home. Thank you to all the sponsors and donors, without them a pet walk would not be possible. Pogo— Large, Adult, Female Tabby - White, Domestic Short Hair Brown [Mix] Born: 5/13/2005 Pogo came to our shelter after she wandered up to a local family and decided to adopt them. They tried to find her previous family but nobody in the neighborhood seemed to know her. Since the family was unable to give her the home they knew she deserved they asked us to help. Pogo loves to look out windows and often uses her bright eyes to hypnotize visitors and volunteers, who often find themselves getting her extra treats and catnip hits for no apparent reason. Pogo Woody—Medium, Adult, Male Domestic Short HairOrange [Mix] Born: 11/1/1998 Woody is a quiet middleaged kitty. His previous family says that he is very smart and learned a number of tricks over the years including 'roll over' and 'sit up'. He knows how to open cabnet doors and drawers so his future family will need to consider the placement of cat food/treats, as well as anything else that he could get into. As a dignified gentleman he doesn't have much patience for hyper kittens and silly dogs. He would do best with other feline family members who share his dignified personality. He has experience with older children, and likes to sit on top of the shelter's refrigerator where he can strike noble-looking poses. Woody Kit Kat—Medium, Adult, Female Tabby - Grey, Domestic Short Hair [Mix] Born: 6/2/2003 My name is Kit Kat and I understand you're interested in applying for the position of providing me with a lap to warm. You should understand that I have quite a bit of experience warming laps, but I'll also be needing beds to warm and windows to nap in. Don't be fooled, when it comes to warming laps size matters and little kittens just aren't up to the task... for your lap you should accept only the best. Also note that I'm not a great fan of dogs... they're terribly undignified creatures. When you stop by the shelter for an inperson interview ask for me by name and perhaps we can work something out. Kit Kat Gunner Gunner—Large, Adult, Male Yellow Labrador Retriever Born: 12-31-04 Hi, my name is Gunner. I think that's funny because I'm a little afraid of gunshots! I was adopted from this shelter a long time ago. When my family couldn't keep me they sent me to live on a farm. I didn't like being alone outside, so I ran away. Now, I'm back at the shelter waiting for a new home. I get excited when I have company and get a little pushy, but that's because I love everybody! I need a forever home where I'll get lots of exercise. If you have a fence, that would be great for keeping me safe. Please come meet me! Rascal—Small, Adult, Male Jack Russell Terrier—Born: 8-1-03 Rascal Rascal is a small dog with a big heart. He likes to cuddle with his favorite person and is very playful. He was loved in his former home but he didn't like the resident cats. Rascal is good with older children who know he needs his space. He does well with other dogs, likes to play fetch and is housetrained. $2 A small toy to pass the long hours waiting $5 A bone for the dogs A fun string toy for the cats $10 Makes all of our bedding Downy fresh Buys us a shiny new collar and leash $15 Feeds us for one day $20 Keeps our web site running for one month Gets one of us routine medical care $25 Provides fresh cat litter for the entire group Helps us find a home with a newspaper ad $50 Buys special foods for sensitive stomachs Trips to the vet for one of our ill friends $75 Helps over population by sterilizing one animal Keeps us all warm during a cold winter month Perches in our cat play area or gravel in dog runs $200 Cat Condo-Buys a condo which give the cats lots of extra room to move around or house 2 cats HMAS Going Green! Thank you to all who dedicated their time and talents to the HMAS 5 4 Hi HMAS, We picked Benny on a Thursday evening. After a few minutes of being upset, he settled in for the drive back here and then made himself at home the second we walked through the front door. Boo!, our 8-year-old tuxedo cat, is beginning to enjoy his new buddy. The first couple days were touch-and-go, but they've been doing very well together since about Saturday afternoon. Boo! isn't ready to admit it publicly, but I think he really likes Benny. Breeze Benny Chris Truscott Hi to all my friends at HMAS, Most of you know that I was adopted on June 8. I was really happy about this. My new people brought me home and took me for a long walk before they introduced me to my new pack. (These people and their long walks, don't they know its a lot more steps for me and my short legs) After the walk I got to meet my new pack. It went very well they are nice dogs and we are already becoming good friends. It is a little weird for me to be allowed in the house. I am a little nervous coming in when I have been let outside to go to the bathroom. I don't like getting up on furniture either. My new people are very happy because I seem be house trained and have had no accidents at all. I have had no disagreements with my 4 packmates either. There are these strange little creatures in the house my people call cats. I am not real sure about them and keep my distance. There is one cat bully who thinks its funny to lay down in a door I want to go thru because he knows I won't step over him. I get to eat here twice a day just like at HMAS. I have a mix of soft-food and hard food. My people say that my friends at HMAS were concerned that I do not always eat well, but I really like the food my new people give me cuz I eat it all as fast as I can. I also eat my meds in the food with out noticing. I have found my favorite spot to sleep at night is on the bedroom floor next to the bed of my new people. Well I guess that's most of my message for now. While I do miss all my great friends at HMAS and the great care they gave me, I am glad to have a new home. I will send some pictures with this message of my new people and my new pack. I hope everyone there is doing GREAT. I better go otherwise I might drool all over the keyboard like I do everything else. Chong Chong Dear Heart of MN Shelter, volunteers and staff, Just a quick note of thanks for all your help in our adoption of Breeze. We had lost 2 animals in the last year to old age, and our youngest child was so sad without a furry companion. Breeze has been a terrific addition to our family and I can't thank you enough. Breeze has been microchipped, and is enjoying (on a leash!) the new spring weather. Paul's so thrilled to have Breeze to hang out with ! Thanks again - you've made a 10 year old boy very happy. Laurie Anastasia Casey (Anastasia) before adoption Casey came to the shelter earlier this summer. She had been fed, but that was about all. Her coat was matted to her skin and she wasn't housebroken. While at the shelter she was shaved, trimmed and bathed. She was so good about the process although it took several sessions to make her feel better. New place, new sounds, new people, yet she was calm and cooperative through everything. Her new family completed adoption papers on her "as is", before grooming and bath - they knew she looked pitiful, but they fell in love with her at first cuddle! She has been renamed Anastasia. They came to visit today. They told us how much they love her, that's she's a joy to be with AND she's housebroken. They've done a wonderful job of following through on their promises to this sweet little dog. And, they're not overfeeding! How great is that? She's slim, active and very happy. Deb In Memory of... When the temperature outside is a pleasant 70°, the inside of your car may be as much as 20 degrees hotter. If Your Dog is Overcome by the Heat Bring down body temperature by soaking the animal in cool (not ice) water, but make sure water does not get into the mouth or nose of an unconscious animal. Seek immediate veterinary care. Hot Weather Travaling Tips ∗ ∗ ∗ We would like to Extend our thanks to the shelter and Deb for bringing “Saul” to visit our 3rd grade book club. After reading 3 books about strays, the kids really enjoyed meeting Saul and asking questions about the animal shelter! Thanks again! Julie Renkes Dassel Elementary ∗ ∗ Get a veterinary checkup before traveling and make sure you have the necessary vaccination certificates for the area you will be visiting, as well as flea and tick treatments.
