Lucky May be a Misnomer or
It May Fit Him Perfectly
Meet Lucky
HSYC Wins at Poker
Lucky is an
example of what
our shelter is all
about. His luck
nearly ran out, but
it came back.
Perhaps you can
make him even
luckier with a good
home. Page 2

On June 23 the Seneca
Power Boat Association held the
Pirate’s Poker Run on Seneca
Lake for the benefit of the
Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation, and the HSYC
wound up with the winning
hand.
Eighty-nine people in 37
powerboats paid a fee to
participate and left the
Showboat Motel at 10:15 to
search Seneca Lake from
Watkins Glen to Geneva for
coins which were traded for
cards upon return to the
Showboat. Cont. on page 2

A Woman Full of Love
Featured Volunteer
We lost
Anastasia in July to
a car accident, but
when she was with
us, we knew a
young woman who
had an incredible
love for and
understanding of
our shelter animals.
Shelter
manager Bonnie
Brewer said
Anastasia came to the shelter while a
freshman at Keuka College as a
volunteer to spend time with the
animals. She was a natural from the
start. Bonnie said, “I knew she was
someone special the first day I went into
the back and found her sitting on the
floor of one of the dog kennels,
snuggling one of our new arrivals. The
dog hadn’t been bathed yet and was
terrified, and here was this lovely girl
sitting on the cement with a giant smile
on her face, loving this dog. It didn’t
matter how much fur or drool was
involved. She was here for the animals.”
Anastasia loved the animals and
they loved her. She certainly exemplified
the spirit of the Shelter of Hope. We all
miss her.
Become a Volunteer
We need special people who love
animals. See what’s available. Stop by
the shelter for an application or go to
WWW.yateshumane.org.
Once you look into the eyes of our
cats, dogs, kittens and puppies, you’ll
understand.
The Shelter received a call about a cat that was
wandering around in bad shape. He was covered in
burdocks, disoriented and thin. He ended up at the
shelter where the staff had to shave off his fur to remove
the burrs. They also discovered he has no teeth, is nearly
blind and partially deaf. The staff assumed he was very
old, but the vet said he is about a year old and probably
never had teeth.
Lucky has adapted well to life at the shelter. He’s
able to eat dry food because his gums are hard (like
teeth) and he can make his way around just fine. His fur
has grown back, and he receives a weekly bath. He loves
to be petted and to sit on laps.
His luck has turned around greatly and we hope
that his lucky streak continues when that perfect person
comes in and decides to give him a shot at a real home.
Poker cont.
Four members of the HSYC administered
the card draw upon the players return. The winners,
with four kings and a queen, were David and Linda
Yaw. The Yaws, whose boat name Purr-fect shows
their love of cats, especially the four they live with,
donated their entire $2,500 winnings to the HSYC
for a kitty fund.
The Yaws’ generosity and love of animals
will help the HSYC Shelter of Hope live up to its
name.

Honoring a Life by Helping the Shelter of Hope
The tragedy of losing a loved one is difficult,
but many families find comfort in honoring the life of
those they have lost by requesting memorial
contributions be made to The Humane Society of

THE JOURNEY HOME
The Humane Society Of Yates County’s “Journey Home”
Pet Crematorium provides cremation services to people
who have lost their pets. We will tastefully furnish the endof-life care your companion deserves. We pride ourselves
on treating every animal with respect and dignity.
What separates us from other animal crematoriums is that
we GUARANTEE that your pet will receive individual
attention and tender, loving care. As pet owners, we
understand what it is like to lose a pet and we never lose
sight of the fact that our pets are members of our family
and deserve to be treated with respect. We are dedicated
volunteers who are in the (not-for-profit) business of
providing assistance and care to animals in need and that
includes after death treatment with dignity.
Cremation service prices are based on the weight of your
pet. If you use Eastview Veterinary Hospital, we will pick
up your pet for free, but you MUST tell Eastview what your
plans are for your pet’s remains. For other situations you
can also phone us directly, and we’ll discuss the end of life
arrangements and crematory services.

Memorial Walkway and Gazebo
Our memorial
walkway will offer you peace
and solitude as you remember
those who have passed,
whether a pet, family member
or friend. Our walkway will
lead you to the Goodsell
Memorial Gazebo, which
board member Tami
Marchionda donated in
memory of her parents
Kenneth and Marilyn who
had a deep passion for animals.
Support the HSYC with a lasting tribute. For
$100 your engraved brick will be placed in the
walkway. Remember, the HSYC is funded by your
donations so please join us in this special
remembrance of those near and dear to all of us. To
order your brick, please visit our website.
If you select our Individual Cremation process, your pet is
cremated individually and the remains are returned to you
in our standard tin urn or a vessel you provide. The
Humane Society of Yates County GUARANTEES that your
pet's remains and only your pet's remains are returned to
you. We provide you with peace of mind. We hope that
provides comfort to you in your time of sorrow.

What an amazing place the shelter is to
spend my day!
Positive people who are all here for the
same reason surround me.
I am able to give HOPE to a living being
that may not have had any before coming through
our doors.
I am able to provide people with an
opportunity to give back to the community by
volunteering.
I feel joy every day when I can match an
adopter with an animal companion.
Thank you to everyone who donates in one
form or another to our shelter! Without you
NONE of this would be possible.
