OPEN HOUSE REPORT
Thank you to those who came to our Open House on June 1! We all had so much fun meeting
people and talking with past clients that we are considering making this an annual event.
Because it took longer than expected to get our shop set up, the publication of this newsletter
is a bit late. We are finally settled, however, and now operating out of our new facility. This
improvement allows us greater flexibility to craft custom components and unique accents.

We’re happy to announce that Jason Stoltzfus welcomed a son, Aidan, into his family on
Saturday, July 6. Our family has expanded as well. We welcome John Henry Blank and Matt Wolf
to the Sylvan Stoltzfus Builders’ team.

Luke Paul grew up in the semi-rural area
north of Pittsburgh. When he and his wife
decided to purchase property, that is where
they looked.
The couple settled on a parcel with a small
home and a bank barn. The barn, they
thought, could become a family recreation
area and storage space, but it needed some
work.
Luke searched online for Amish barn
builders, eventually coming to Sylvan
Stoltzfus Builders’ web site. Impressed by
the size and beauty of the SSB barns, Luke
gave them a call.
Sylvan went to Pittsburgh several times to
discuss the project with the Pauls. When
they received the quote and saw how
detailed and thorough it was, the Pauls
decided to make the barn a home for their
family.

Work began in the spring of 2012.
“This was our first building experience.
SSB made the process easy, giving us all
the support and direction we needed to
bring our new home to reality,”
Luke says. “It really felt like a team
effort.”
“What was incredible to me was how
those three unbelievably dedicated men
redesigned that entire barn. They arrived
at the beginning of each week, put in 13to 14-hour days, then drove home for the
weekend.”
Just a few weeks ago, the Pauls moved into
their new 6,000-square-foot home, eleven
months after construction began.
Caitlin Paul, a graduate of Pitt Studio Arts
Program, began designing the home’s
interior spaces; Sylvan provided ideas and
helpful suggestions along the way. When
everyone agreed on what would be done

A ‘HORSE-FIRST’ FACILITY
A BARN BECOMES A HOME

Riverside Ranch is a 103-acre property
north of Syracuse, New York. It borders two
busy highways, making it highly visible to
commuters and business people.
When Kathy and Tom Waddle purchased the
site, they envisioned a special barn for Kathy’s
Clydesdale horses, one that would not only
epitomize her natural ‘horse-first’ philosophy
but also demonstrate energy-efficiency,
creative functionality, and fine craftsmanship.
Together they sketched out a basic plan, then
started looking for a contractor who could
fulfill the vision.
Several contractors later, Kathy was still
looking for the right person. By chance, she
landed on the Sylvan Stoltzfus Builders’ web
site and was immediately drawn to what she
saw.
“I wrote immediately,” Kathy recalls, “but it
wasn’t until Sylvan Stoltzfus visited to discuss
the project that I recognized a good fit. I
couldn’t wait to tell my husband, ‘This is our
guy!’ ”
The finished two-story barn has ten stalls,
a feed room, two wash bays, an equipment
room and a tack room. An attached indoor
arena and a lounge completes the complex,
which extends a full 240’ in length.
“Sylvan took our crude drawings and
worked with us to make something
beautiful. His experience with large-scale
equestrian and timber-frame projects set
him apart from other contractors.”
SSB’s creative designs are evident throughout.
The large washing bays allow access on both
sides. Every horse has its own window. The loft
above the stalls -- all 3,600 square feet of it
-- provides not only unfettered headroom for
the horses, but also permits hay to be dropped
into each stall from above. And a tri-ply ceiling
keeps birds and insects from nesting in the
trusses.
Tom Waddle echoes his wife’s admiration.

to hard work, creative problem-solving, and
pride in a job well done.”
