Welcome from the President
Ladies,
I hope that you are enjoying these lazy days of summer. Susan
Gabel and I have been busy preparing an exciting calendar of
programs for you. The year will culminate in our GCA Flower
Show “It’s the Real Thing”, so it will be all hands on deck to create
a fabulous show. We’ve balanced the work with plenty of play:
bring your own container, and we’ll show you how to make a longlasting arrangement for your Thanksgiving holiday. Try your hand
at designing Botanical Jewelry; or Floral Design, Horticulture,
Photography---it’s all within your reach. Prominent speakers will
share the back-story of recent bold conservation initiatives in New
York City, and will help you to have greater success growing
healthy roses without chemicals. We’ll visit Hyde Park, with
private tours of FDR’s home and presidential library, followed by a
5-star lunch at the Culinary Institute of America. We are delighted
to have celebrity speaker India Hicks for our annual holiday
fundraiser, with her own special Island Style.
Please support our friends, The Rye Garden Club, in their
centennial year. Their GCA Flower Show at The Apawamis Club is
open to the public on September 24th and 25th.
I look forward to seeing you all at our kick-off meeting, Wednesday,
September 9th at Meg Tyre’s house. Until then, be well.

Summer Hort Workshop
Our club hort chairs, Mary Julian and Anna Parker, kicked off the
season with a propagation workshop for the Zone III Meeting Plant
Exchange (PX) at Anna’s house on August 5. The theme for the
2016 PX is Native Pollinators. Our workshop provided members
with instruction and supplies to propagate plants by seeds and
softwood cuttings.
They planted the following seeds:
- Aruncus dioicus
- Asclepias incarnata ‘Cinderella’
- Coreopsis grandiflora ‘Early
Sunrise’
- Echinacea purpurea ‘Baby White
Swan’
- Solidago Canadensis ‘Baby Gold’ They did softwood cuttings of:
- Aronia melanocarpa
- Clethra alnifolia ‘Crystalina’
and ‘Ruby Spice’
- Ilex verticillata ‘Winter Red’
and ‘Southern Gentleman’
- Itea virginica ‘Henry’s Garnet’
- Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Diabolo’
- Viburnum nudum ‘Winterthur’
The members who attended the workshop took their pots home to
care for until the June 2016 Zone III Meeting in Syracuse. More
later about the successes and failures……

*LGC docent-guided tours of the Floral Design and Hort Divisions
provided to LGC members by Laura Haley and Chris Murray

Welcome to Our Newest Members
Yvonne Gunnarsson is an accomplished businesswoman,
with 25 years of experience working with textiles as a
master window treatment designer, interior decorator and
couture fashion manufacturer. Her lifelong love of
gardening began on her family farm in Sweden. The
family’s large floral and vegetable gardens and orchard,
made them self-sufficient in many fruits and vegetables.
As a child, Yvonne worried that her mother had to work
so hard in the garden. Later, when Yvonne had a garden
of her own, she realized that gardening can be relaxing,
and a wonderful creative outlet. As an artist who loves to
create beautiful things, Yvonne feels that a home comes to
life when filled with flowers and plants. Yvonne is the
mother of three grown boys, and lives in an apartment in
Rye. She can’t wait to garden with us at our civic sites
and to learn more about floral design. She looks forward
to bonding with our members through volunteering, and
participating wherever she can. Welcome Yvonne!
Stephanie Spierings lives in Rye with her husband
Sander and their two children, ages 11 and 10. Until
recently, she worked at Citigroup as a marketing
director in its credit card division. Since moving to
Rye 6 years ago, Stephanie has been actively
involved in the Rye community: serving on the Rye
Parks Commission; leading the membership efforts
of the Rye Cub Scouts, as well as leading a Cub
Scout and Girl Scout troop. She also teaches
Sunday school. Stephanie became interested in the
Little Garden Club when she saw the various clubsponsored civic activities around town, and spoke to
our members. Now as a member herself, Stephanie
looks forward to participating in LGCR’s many civic
endeavors, and expanding her gardening knowledge
-- including horticulture and flower arranging.
