Well we are in the midst of an in-depth Bible Study sermon series on the book of ROMANS. And so you may
wonder, why Romans? As I just tried to demonstrate – throughout church history, careful study of the book
of Romans was often the catalyst for revival. So many of the greatest leaders and theologians of Church
History can link a turning point in their faith with the study of this ancient letter. For instance:
The year is 386 AD. The breeze rustles the fig leaves of the garden as the warm Italian sun burns above a
figure in thought. A middle aged professor’s lips are pursed as tears trickle down his cheeks to wet his
beard. Though his movements seem only slightly agitated, inside his mind wages a war of wills. One side of
him wants to continue in his lifetime of sin and debauchery, living for pleasures and pride. The other side
calls him to a life serving the LORD God who beckons him. Faintly from a distance a small child can be heard
singing a meaningless song as she plays, “pick it up and read it...pick it up and read it...”
Augustine of Hippo grabbed hold of the Bible on the bench and reads chapter 13 from the book of Romans.
It was the final shove off the diving board into a life of faith. Augustine would become a pivotal influence on
Christian theology.
The year is 1515. The faint scratches of the quill pen echo in the cold university tower. A tired German friar
squints to see the page he is studying in the dim flicker of candlelight. The mountains of papers and books
stacked around him remind him of the mountains of sin within his own heart. Squeezed by what he feels is
the cold judgment of an angry God and his constant, failing, unworthiness. But tonight, while preparing his
class lectures on the book of Romans, the Augustinian monk finds something in the text he can’t believe
he’s missed. The just shall live by faith. By faith? Was there room for that in his theology?
After days and nights of study in Romans, Martin Luther felt like he was born anew, his new theological zeal
was the catalyst for a wildfire of faith, and led the Church to a grand Reformation unmatched by all of history.
The year is 1738. The heavy footsteps of an Anglican minister ‘clip-clop’ on the cobblestone streets of London, as the weight of the world hangs about his shoulders. Deep in thought, he barely notices the bustle of
wagons and pedestrians clamoring in his ears. He had failed as a missionary, and was not well liked by his
own parish. But his turbulent history was a blur compared to the fears for his immortal soul. Do I have faith
enough to save me? How can I know for sure? If I don’t know then I should leave the ministry, for I am a
danger to my own congregation. When he grudgingly opened the door on Aldersgate Street, and took his
seat – the leader was reading Martin Luther’s preface to the book of Romans.
The minister, John Wesley, felt his heart change forever. Wesley began preaching in the fields and organizing believers into small groups....He went on to help lead a terrific revival in England that history would call
the First Great Awakening.

We have some awesome volunteers, but are looking for more people to plug in. Listed below our
some of the positions we want to fill.
Teacher/Helper (Elementary/
Preschool):
One of the reasons we have teacher/helper listed together is because we believe that anyone can
teach. However, the process should start by helping
someone already teaching. This allows for intentional training and
helping people be more comfortable with the kids and format before
being asked to teach. The Helper’s main responsibility is assisting
the teacher. This mainly happens by keeping the kids focused and
working to build relationships with the kids. (Monthly Commitment)
Drama Team (Elementary):
We do drama with the elementary kids almost on a weekly basis. What fun it would be for the kids to see one of their parents helping in this way! Drama almost always takes place at the very beginning of a service and would require 15 minutes of your time for both
the 9:00am and 10:45am. (Monthly Commitment)
Nursery:
Love to play with kids or hold babies? Do we ever have the spot for
you! We need nursery volunteers for both the infants and toddlers. This is a monthly commitment and a very important
one! There are many studies that show the impact a church nursery
can have on a child by just showing them how much they mean to us
and God! (Monthly Commitment)

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me,
and do not hinder them,
for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as
these.”
All of God’s creation is important to Him. Jesus told us that God remembers each sparrow, even
though there are thousands (Luke 12:6-7). But Jesus said that people are even more valuable to
God. In fact, God counts every hair on our heads! God shows us how important we are to Him
when He pursues a relationship with us. And He started in the very beginning when He sought
out Adam and Eve in the garden. God shows us how much He values us because He loves us.
Pre-K and K:
This month, we’re introducing preschoolers to the truth that God is
always with them. When they’re in the car, He’s there. When they’re at home,
He’s there. When they go to preschool, He’s there. When they are making wise
choices, He’s there. When they’re making not-so-wise choices, He’s there. He
is ALWAYS with us. Always.
As we unpack the stories of Deborah, Ruth, Naomi and Boaz, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and Daniel, we will show our preschoolers various situations where God was right there helping the entire time. Because
they can’t see God with their eyes, it is harder for preschoolers (and many
adults) to understand that He’s there with us every minute of every day. By
learning and investigating these stories from the past, we hope to show them
that God is with us even though we can’t see Him.
Elementary:
Wisdom is finding out what you should do and doing it. When we seek
wisdom and ask God for it, He will give it to us.
He will help us figure out the wise choice when
we need to make a decision. We can find
God’s wisdom by reading the Bible and asking
trusted Christ-followers.
The monthly memory verse is: “Choose my teaching instead of silver.
Choose knowledge rather than fine gold. Wisdom is worth more than
rubies. Nothing you want can compare with her,” Proverbs 8:10-11,
NIrV. No matter how big or small the decision, God will help you make the
wise choice. It might be tempting to compromise wisdom for quick and
easy gain, but Solomon teaches us that choosing wisdom first is best.
In Week One’s Bible story, God was pleased with King Solomon and offered to give him whatever he wanted. Solomon asked for wisdom (1
Kings 3:4-15) and was rewarded. Our Bottom Line is: God wants to give
you wisdom. Anytime we have a decision to make or a situation we aren’t
sure how to handle, we can ask God for wisdom.
In Week Two’s biblical principle, Solomon, the wisest person who ever
lived, teaches us to choose our words wisely. “Thoughtless words cut like
a sword. But the tongue of wise people brings healing,” (Proverbs 12:18).
Our Bottom Line is: If you want to be wise, think before you speak. When
we’re upset or emotional, we may be tempted to blurt out hurtful words
that we might regret after we’ve calmed down. Speaking without thinking can cause damage. But wise words can help.
In Week Three’s Bible story, King Rehoboam needed to make an important decision (1 Kings 12:1-15a). The king decided to follow his buddies’ advice, and his decision led to a split in the nation of Israel. Our
Bottom Line is: If you want to be wise, hang out with wise people. Proverbs 13:20 says: “Anyone who walks with wise people grows wise. But a
companion of foolish people suffers harm.”
In Week Four’s Bible story, King Josiah was very young when he started
ruling (2 Kings 22-23). He could have followed in the footsteps of the
kings before him and disobeyed God’s law. But when he found God’s
words, he realized this was not wise. Our Bottom Line is: If you want to
be wise, look before you leap. Proverbs 22:3 says: “Wise people see danger and go to a safe place. But childish people keep going and suffer for
it.”
