Thank you for considering post 16 study at Bemrose. Our provision
may be small but we pride ourselves that it is friendly, personal and
based on wanting the very best for you whatever your academic ability.
The only things we ask (in fact insist on) are that you are ambitious for
yourself, prepared to work hard and willing to support the continuing improvement of the school in the way that you work and behave.
Our post 16 students are the role models for the rest of the school – we
ask that you are willing to get involved in the life of the school and to
provide a good example for the younger pupils.

Welcome to post 16 study at The Bemrose School.
We are delighted to offer ‘A’ levels or L3 BTECs in: ICT,
business studies, media, sport, RE , health and social care , sociology, English, maths art & design and performing arts. At level 2 we
offer GCSEs or BTECs in English , maths, business, ICT and
health & social care. This is enhanced by school and community involvement coupled with supportive individual pastoral care.
moment we have over 40 students in year12 & 13. Most are studying
at an Advanced level but some are improving the grades that they
achieved in their GCSEs and we are doing apprenticeships 2 days
a week.
We were successful again in getting students into University. For
many of the students it was the first time anyone from their family had
gone into higher education. Other students went on to work-based
training in a career of their choice.

Our aim is to:

Why Study Art and Design at The Bemrose School?
Why choose this course?
BTEC Level 3 Nationals
This course is ideal for students who have an interest in any
aspect of Art and Design. It is a broad course that offers you
the chance to explore a range of opportunities within the field
of Art and Design, with a huge number of specialist pathways
in the fields such as photography, animation, 3d design or even
fashion.
Who is the course for?
The course is particularly suitable for anybody who wishes to
study in preparation for employment in a role where you would

be expected to have an understanding of design principles,
techniques and processes. It is also an appropriate progression
route to higher level courses at college or university.
How Will I Be Taught?
Over a period of two years you will complete 6 units of work on
a range of topics that relate to the Art and Design industries.
Guidance and support will be provided throughout, although
you will be expected to be responsible for your own learning .
There will be opportunities for you to work with other members
of the group as well as independently.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Assessment is ongoing based on evidence within your portfolio. After each unit advice will be given on how to improve your
grade.
Outline of the course:
In year one you will be entered for the Level 3 BTEC certificate
in Art and Design. This will involve the completion of 3 units of
work, all of which are course work based.
Upon completion of year 1, you will move onto the Level 3
BTEC subsidiary diploma in Art and Design. This will involve
the completion of a further 3 units of work, again all of which will be
course work based.

IIf you choose to do this course you will be working in a business environment, researching and investigating businesses in
the region to gather evidence for your coursework portfolios.
These portfolios can be used in the future to show employers
and universities the quality of work you have produced.
Although there are exams and these are very important, the
stress is on the practical work.
As you progress through the course you will develop skills that
are valued by employers and will help you if you choose to continue studying when you leave. You will need to be self motivated and this course will improve your ability to work independently. You will also enhance your time management skills
and by working with others to carry out research and present

why language is used differently in different social contexts,

The courses will equip you with skills which will benefit you

AS Course Content
Exam:

Exploring different text varieties and analysing language use.
You will demonstrate in the exam how to group everyday texts in
a variety of ways using your linguistic knowledge.

Studying how language is used (in spoken and written texts) in
different social contexts, focussing on the representation of gender, how power is enforced through language and how developments in technology are affecting language use.
Coursework:

The coursework consists of creating two texts for different audiences and purposes, demonstrating your linguistic and contextual
awareness.
A2 Course Content
Exam:

Using the skills and knowledge from your AS studies as well as
concepts and theories in the field of language acquisition, you will
explore how children acquire language in order to communicate.

You will also analyse and evaluate the developments and changes
in language over time by exploring a variety of texts and relating
linguistic trends and changes to socio-historical factors.
Coursework:
The coursework consists of a language investigation in your chosen
focus area, accompanied by a media text based on your findings.

The L3 BTEC National in health & social care provides

Why Study Media at The Bemrose School?
In OCR Nationals Level 3: Media Studies, you will explore
a range of media genres and texts and examine their impact on
the public and the media industry. You will complete assignments based on television and film, games, magazines, newspapers, radio and coverage on the internet.
You will be assessed through written assignments, verbal
presentations and practical activities, such as: film making, ed-

iting, exhibition creation, recording and developing new media
ideas and projects.
The qualification is designed to enable you to develop skills
which will help you enter employment with knowledge at
trained level in some media environments. It will also test business, ICT and English knowledge and will provide you with
UCAS points at the end of the course, which will be determined on whether you pass at Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma level.

Level 3 Qualification:
The OCR Nationals Level 3: Media Studies has been developed
to recognise candidate’s skills, knowledge and understanding of media,
the media industry and careers based within the media sector. The
course supports and develops the candidates’ ability to carry out a
range of tasks on a group, paired and individual level.
The course recognises candidates’ achievements in media and develops qualities in candidates which are relevant for the workplace and
for further studies in media/film.
Candidates’ complete a portfolio of work which is developed through
teacher set scenarios which have been derived from situations in the
workplace. The course duration is two years and there is no examination at any point on this course. However, the 100% portfolio consists of six units, four of which are mandatory and two optional.
Candidates’ are expected to experience and take part in work placements and/or visits, as well as in the organisation of quest speakers
throughout the course.
For candidates’ hoping to attend university, the course offers the
equivalent to an A Level in Media Studies and provides those students wanting to attend further education, with UCAS points.

Who is the course for?
This course is for anyone with an interest in religious, philosophical or moral ideas,
who values debate and argument. This course also provides a great basis for
those wanting to study law, philosophy or classics and provides you with a range
of critical skills that will be of use in whatever you decide to pursue after further
education.
You may have some experience of philosophical and ethical issues from GCSE,
or it may be completely new.
How will I be taught?
The course is split into two components: philosophy and ethics. You will be
taught in a variety of learning styles. You will be expected to be responsible for
your own learning and work with other members of the group as well as independently.
How will I be assessed?
Both AS and A2 Level assessment is by written examination. There will be one
exam in Religious Philosophy and one in Religious Ethics at the end of each year.
We follow the OCR syllabus.

Philosophy of Religion
You will explore the ancient origins of modern religious philosophy and some of the
questions that have puzzled and inspired people for more that two thousand years.
You will discover the influence that the ancient Greeks had on religious thought; the
ways that jewish and Christian ideas helped define God in the West; some of the
most significant arguments to show the existence of God; and challenges to religious
belief, old and new.

For as long as people have lived together there have been debates over what makes

and what it means to be good. You will consider the work of Aristotle, Kant, JS Mill
and many others.

Philosophy of Religion
Improving and deepening your AS studies with consideration of issues such as the
nature of religious experience and miracles, and just what we mean by the idea of a
soul.
Religious Ethics
Continuing from your AS studies we will engage with the significance of ethical theories themselves—topics include whether we have free will or not, what it means to have
a conscience and meta-ethics.

Islam
In Islam you will discover the origins, scripture and ways of life of Muslims as it is practiced in different ways and cultures today. You will learn about the origins of the
Qu’ran, the importance of scripture, angels and the Last Day and the way Islam developed from its origins to today.
New Testament
New Testament offers you the chance to gain an in-depth understanding of the
Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. You will learn about the different
ways they have been interpreted, the big themes in the gospels, and try to uncover the
‘real’ Jesus revealed by the text itself.

Outline of the course:
an A/S level and a further three in Year 13 leading to an A level.
Assessment: There will be two examinations during Year 12 and the
same again in Year 13. Exam questions are a mixture of structured
questions, data response and essay questions.
Units Include: Families and Households, Education, Theory and
Methods, Stratification and Differentiation, World Sociology of Beliefs and Crime and Deviance.
General Information: The course will consist of lots of different experiences including visits, research and discussion.
Even though it would have been useful to have studied GCSE sociology it is not necessary to have done so.
Certain units support work in the Applied A level in health and social
care.
There will be many opportunities to develop key skills in communication,
application of number, ICT, working with others, improving own learning
and performance and problem solving.
A level sociology is useful for careers in social work and care, journalism,
business administration, management or as part of entry for an undergraduate course in social sciences, humanities or other vocational subjects.

Why Study Sport at The Bemrose School?
Who is the course suitable for?
Those studying in preparation for employment in the sport sector in job
roles at an operative or supervisory level within a wide range of sport related environments. This qualification provides a progression route to
the OCR Level 3 Diploma in Sport and has potential for progression
to sport related university course.
Overview
This course has been developed to recognise learners skills, knowledge
and understanding of sporting activities, environments and operations.
The learners carry out a range of tasks that have been designed to
recognise their achievements in a modern, practical way that is relevant
to the workplace.
They do not certificate competence on the job but are work-related
qualifications which will support progression to an NVQ once a learner
is in the work place.
How will this qualification be assessed?
All units are centre-assessed and externally moderated by OCR.
There are no timetabled exams for this qualification; candidates may
complete units at a time that suits the centre. The full award and units
from this qualification are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. The
qualification grade and associated UCAS points are dependent upon
the cumulative score of all completed units when combined.

Apprenticeship Progression Pathways
Outline of the course
We are delighted to offer a shared provision through training
agencies such as TS2000 and Derby College. Students
spend 2 days a week with the trainers or on work placement.
During this time they will gain a level 2 apprenticeship qualification, equivalent to 5 GCSEs. The other 2 days are
spend in school doing a package of appropriate lessons and
support.
This is suitable for a range of students even the most able.
For many apprenticeships it is necessary to gain level2 before progressing onto level 3. Students can proceed onto
level 3, redirect onto a more traditional academic level 3 package or seek employment.
At the moment we are offering Business and Administration,
Construction and also Engineering. I expect that we will
have more courses coming on line quite soon.
