Weekend Excursion to Bardstown, KY
Distillery Tours, Dinner Train & More
OVEB member Edwin Faulkner generously volunteered to plan and host our June
weekend excursion to Kentucky’s bourbon country. He has previously hosted similar
trips for other car clubs to which he belongs, so we are in experienced hands. Ed
prepared the following detailed agenda. Please read it over carefully, as there are a
number of choices we need to make ASAP.
Dear OVEB Members:
We will be going to Bardstown, KY the weekend of June 22nd/23rd. Following are the
details of the trip:
1.
We will leave from the I-75 rest area that is located just south of Exit 178 in
Northern Kentucky. We'll gather there between 7:30 and 7:50 AM and depart
promptly at 8:00 AM.
2.
We'll travel south on I-75 for a short distance and then use back roads for the
rest of the trip.
3.
We'll go directly to the
Maker’s Mark Distillery,
which is located south
of Bardstown in Loretto,
KY. We'll tour the
distillery and participate
in the bourbon tasting
afterward; the charge
for the tour is $7 per
person. There is a
sandwich shop/deli on
the property where we
will have lunch. Here is

After lunch, we'll go to the hotel to
check in. June is a busy time in
Bardstown, which makes hotel
rooms scarce. I have reserved 10
rooms at the Comfort Inn, which is
located right in town. The rooms are
reserved under my credit card, so I'll
need commitments by June 1st from
everyone who is planning to go on
the trip.

At check-in, each person will change the reservation to their credit card or make
arrangements to pay cash. The rate is $89.95/night plus tax; a full breakfast is included.

The cancellation policy states that rooms must be canceled by 4:00 PM on Friday June
21st, so if you commit to go and cancel after that day/time, you will be liable to pay for
the room.

A unique Bardstown dining option is to
enjoy dinner on My Old Kentucky
Dinner Train.
The train station is located right in
town. My Old Kentucky Dinner Train
departs at 5:00 PM. The scenic ride
through bourbon country provides an
ever-changing backdrop to the dining
experience. The dinner trip costs
$84.95 per person.
If we have a group of at least 10 people, the price drops to $74.95 per person. In order
to get the lower price, the tickets must be charged to a single credit card. As I will not be
going on the dinner train, Brad Nogar has volunteered to coordinate dinner train
reservations. Please contact him directly if you wish to purchase dinner train tickets.

For those who don't wish to dine by rail, there are a number of restaurants in Bardstown
from which to choose.
On Sunday, June 23rd, we'll head home using back roads different from the ones we
used on Saturday. There are three options for the day:
1.
As there are a number of members who live in the Dayton area, we can depart
Bardstown right after breakfast so that everyone can get home in the afternoon.
2.
We can spend the morning exploring Bardstown and then get on the road right
after lunch.
3.
We can depart Bardstown after
breakfast but take a detour to
Versailles, KY to tour the
Woodford Reserve distillery.
The distillery is open on
Sundays from 12:30 to 4:30
PM. Of the five distilleries that I
have toured, it is my favorite.
Our route home takes us close
to Versailles, so going there is
not far out of the way, but it will
mean that some people won't
get home until evening.
The $7.00 charge for the
Bourbon Discovery
Tour includes a tasting. Woodford Reserve
serves a "Picnic on the Porch" lunch on
Sundays from 1:00 to 3:30 PM. It features a
wide array of gourmet sandwiches, salads,
and desserts. No reservations are required
for groups of less than twenty people. Lunch
is offered on a first come, first served basis,
so plan to dine early for the best selection.
Prices range from $6 to $12 for a full lunch.
