When I was in high school, I participated in the
vocational building trades program for two years. I had
planned to be a carpenter when I completed high
school, but my mother convinced me to “give college a
try”. That fall, I began my studies at Purdue University
in construction management. My first year’s classes
focused on estimating construction materials and
project management. Estimating concrete and two by
fours just did not have enough excitement for me, so
after the first year, I changed my major of study to
industrial supervision with an emphasis in human
resources—desiring more contact with people. To
support myself during college, I worked full-time
during the day and took classes at night. After
graduation, I began my career in employee training and
development. I worked my way up to human resource
manager and now I am thrilled to serve Westminster
Village as the human resource director. I feel privileged
to help our employees and our leadership team.

Super Food:
Watermelon
Crisp, cool
watermelon is a tasty
and nutritious ending
to a summer meal.
This sweet relative of
the cantaloupe,
squash and cucumber
is high in vitamins A
and C and lycopene.
These antioxidants
help prevent heart
attack, stroke and
cancer. Choose
watermelons that are
heavy for their size
and have a yellowish
area on one side,
where the fruit rested
on the ground. This
indicates that the
watermelon was
vine-ripened and is
more likely to be
flavorful and juicy.
Summer Is Good for
Your Health
Hoosiers have good reason to
celebrate summer. After months in the
bitter cold, it feels wonderful to get
outside for long stretches of time and
enjoy the warm air and bright sunshine.
While it’s true that you must be careful
in the season’s heat and humidity, a little
advance planning will make it possible to
experience all of the joys of summertime.
The sun has an important role in
allowing the body to absorb vitamin D,
so spending time outside has several
health benefits. Vitamin D can protect
against a host of diseases, including
osteoporosis, heart disease and cancers of
the breast, prostate and colon. Sunlight
also has hidden benefits—like protecting
against depression and insomnia.
Older adults have more to gain from
additional time outdoors, because as you
age, your body produces less
Vitamin D than it did when you
were younger. Spending time
outside allows the body to absorb
this essential nutrient. However,
you need to take precautions
against heat exhaustion and heat
stroke, which can be harmful or
evenly deadly.
If it’s a really hot day, don’t
plan your outside time around the
hottest hours, which are usually
from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Consider
waking up early and taking a walk
with the sunrise, spend your
morning working in the garden
(like the plot-to-plate program
being hosted by the Wellness
department), or take advantage of
family summer activities by
attending grandkids’ or friends’
evening sporting events or picnics.
As a general rule, senior adults
should not practice outdoor
physical activity if it’s warmer
than 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Those
very hot summer days are perfect
for staying inside and
participating in stretchercise, Tai
Chi or a dance class.
An added benefit of spending
time outside is the physical
activity that usually accompanies
it. Time spent walking around the
block or planting seeds in the dirt
can support an active lifestyle.
Although sun exposure can
provide health benefits, it is
important to protect against its
harmful rays. Wear plenty of
sunscreen, don a protective hat
and consider carrying a hand-held
fan to make the most of the
summer days.

Glee Club Dazzles Residents
One of the most enjoyable events of the year is the
visit and performance by the Purdue Glee Club. In
May, the residents enjoyed an afternoon listening to
the Glee Club sing some of their long-time favorite
songs as well as some newer tunes. Their closing
medley recognized all the branches of the armed
Purdue University Glee Club services. It was truly heartwarming to watch those
residents who served our country stand in honor of
their respective branches.

Jim Fisher shares about his Honor Flight.
Honor Flight
Three Westminster residents were
among the many who participated in
the Honor Flight that left Purdue
Airport for Washington, D.C., in the
early morning of May 5. All three
residents served our country in WWII.
The Honor Flight transports
America’s veterans to Washington,
D.C., to visit memorials that honor
their service to and sacrifice for their
country. Because America felt it was
important enough to build the
memorials, the Honor Flight Network
believes it is equally important that
those veterans actually get to visit and
experience their memorials.
Each honoree takes a companion
to guide and care for him or her
during the trip. Bob Dale’s grandson
and Jim Fisher’s son went with them.
Both residents thought it was extra
special to experience Washington,
especially their memorials, through
the eyes of their loved ones.
Jerry Goetsch said that there was
someone to greet them at each
destination; and he had never been
made to feel so special in his life.
The highlight for Jim Fisher was
watching the changing of the guard
at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
in the National Cemetery. The
soldier walked back and forth: he
stood at each end of the tomb for 21
seconds before walking back to the
other end. This service is performed
24/7/365 regardless of the weather.
All three residents agreed that the
day was unforgettable and would
surely be willing to share their
experiences.
A Cricket Symphony
The sound of crickets chirping is relaxing for many people. As the months get
warmer, the crickets begin to make more music. Science can explain how the
temperature affects the number of chirps a cricket produces. There is even a
formula for figuring out the temperature based on the number of chirps.
Crickets are cold-blooded and, because of this, they take on the temperature that
surrounds them. As the temperature rises, the number of chirps a cricket produces
also increases.
To obtain a rough estimate of what the temperature is in degrees Fahrenheit,
count the number of chirps you hear in 15 seconds. Add 37 to that number, and
you will have the approximate outside temperature.
While you enjoy the great outdoors, listen to the crickets and try using the
formula to determine the temperature.

Volunteer
Corner
Recognizing Dee Dee Knaus
Dee Dee moved to this area 52 years
ago. Before retiring from her job, Dee
Dee always made time to volunteer.
After moving to Westminster in 2011,
she began offering her singing talents
for special occasions and serving at
assisted living birthday parties. For the
last two years she has delivered the AL
mail six days a week. She loves the
responsibility of delivering the mail
and says it gets her going in the
morning.
Dee Dee recently learned how
important logging her volunteer hours
is to the Village. In the past, much of
this information has gone unrecorded.
Logging volunteer hours is extremely
helpful data. It provides statistics that
Westminster is required to report, it
illustrates the degree of support
residents give back, it is a strong
indicator of the man-hours it requires
to maintain the Village and it gives
Westminster the opportunity to
recognize their volunteers and express
the appreciation they deserve.
A huge thank you to Dee Dee for her
investment into Westminster.
Mother’s Day Tea a
Huge Success
The Mother’s Day Tea was enjoyed
by more than 160 guests. The guest
speaker, Angie Klink, spoke about her
new book, The Deans Bible.
The book highlighted five women at
Purdue and how they knitted a sacred
bond through a secret symbol—a Bible.
Dorothy C. Stratton, Helen B.
Schleman, M. Beverley Stone, Barbara I.
Cook and Betty M. Nelson created new
opportunities for women and became
conduits for change, fostering
opportunities for all people.
Each woman was a legendary dean
of women or dean of students.
Collectively, they wove a sisterhood of
mutual support in their common
pursuit of shared human rights and
equality for all.
Several guests at the tea were able to
share their own stories of their
relationships with these strong,
courageous women.

Spring Fever Hits in Assisted Living
Men vs. Women Competition and the
Winning Airplane
“Always remember you’re unique, just like everyone
else.”
—Alison Boulter
Spring fever has finally caught up with us in Assisted
Living. Everyone seems to have a renewed energy that
comes with this time of year; and, we have enjoyed getting
outside again.
The month of May began with a celebration of Cinco de
Mayo followed by a visit from the Columbian Park Zoo,
music with Kenny Holcomb, a Mother’s Day Tea and an
entertaining afternoon with the Purdue Glee Club.
A big thank you goes out to Terry Smith, owner of
Rubia Flower Market, for sharing her love of flowers,
experiences, and talent with the residents this month.
A Musical Month in the Health Center
Lloyd Hammerton and Gimble A Cappella
We hope you enjoyed the month of May with the birds
singing, flowers blooming, warm weather and sweet
sunshine. This past month, the Health Center enjoyed an
outing to Dog ’n Suds and Arni’s.
It was also a month of music! The men received special
attention from Gary’s new men’s group, Gentlemen’s Round
Table. The residents were treated to a special performance
by the University of Michigan College of Literature,
Science and Arts called Gimble A Cappella; and enjoyed
music by local favorite, Dave Laskey. On a sad musical
note, the residents had to say good-bye to their music
therapist who is moving out of state with her family.
We celebrated Mother’s Day last month and look
forward to Father’s Day this month. We are also excited for
van outings, outdoor celebrations in the courtyard,
musical performances, games and much more!
