FEB-X, 2015 GEORGETOWN HIGH SCHOOL Personal Personal Power Power is when a person feels that he/she has control over what happens to them and their lives. One of the most important ways to build your character is to show people that you have personal power and ignore peer pressure or being forced into something you do not want to do. An important key to having high self-esteem is to have personal power. Having personal power will empower you to take on more responsibilities and give you more confidence to go explore the ever changing world around us. But we also have to know what we can and what we cannot control. DAKOTA WERNER GNEWS Resistance Skills Resistance Skills is when a person can resist negative peer pressure and dangerous situations. If you are a parent try to make your kids aware that other young people may participate in unhealthy acts involving things like gambling, substance use, and sexual activity. I think that school is one of the places where resistance skills come in to play because everyone wants to fit in and be popular. Peer pressure can be a powerful motivator and encourage your kids when they make a good choice. Teach them to use nonviolent resistance skills like walking away and being assertive when they say no. FEB-X, 2015 GEORGETOWN HIGH SCHOOL You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries? Dylan Adams Leaving behind nights of terror and fear Don’t you take it awful hard I rise ‘cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines Into a daybreak that wondrously clear Diggin in my own backyard. I rise Bringing the gifts my ancestors gave, You may shoot me with your words, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. You may cut me with your eyes, I rise You may kill me with your hatefulness, I rise But still, like air, I rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise? Is it a coincidence or is he just that clever?! Either way I'm ecstatic!” — Richard Sherman (@RSherman_25) February 5, 2015 Sherman's jersey number is 25.The baby's arrival -- and Sherman's participation in the bowl game had been a hot topic before Super Bowl XLIX as his girlfriend, Ashley Moss, was in Arizona for the game. Before the game, Sherman said "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it, but I think my son will be a disciplined young man and stay in there a while longer." Peter King of MMQB.com reported that Sherman's son has been named Rayden. That may disappoint Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who joked before the Super Bowl that he "can't wait to see little Petey." Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson offered his congratulations and babysitting help on Twitter.@RSherman_25 so happy for you bud!!! You are going to be an amazing dad! Love you bro! Let me make if you need me to babysit! — Russell Wilson (@DangeRussWilson) February 5, 2015 Sherman played in Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Patriots with an elbow injury that he suffered in the NFC Championship Game against Green Bay. It has yet to be determined whether he'll need surgery. –ESPN Christopher Hettinger LSU led 66-60 before Towns ended the run with a step back jumper that jumpstarted an 11-3 UK run to close out the game. Towns, one of Kentucky's heralded freshman, has averaged 15.3 points and 11.3 boards over his last three games after failing to surpass 12 points or four rebounds in his previous five. Willie Cauley-Stein scored 15 points and Devin Booker gave 14 for the Wildcats (24-0, 11-0 SEC), who are one win shy of matching the best start in program history. LSU's dynamic frontcourt played superb on Tuesday despite the loss. Jarell Martin had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Jordan Mickey scored 16 points with seven rebounds and four blocks. The Tigers (17-7, 6-5) fell to 1-8 in the last nine matchups against Kentucky. As it has so often this season, Kentucky struggled out of the gate. Martin's alley-oop from Tim Quarterman highlighted a 10-2 LSU run to open the game. Martin then lobbed one up for a Mickey slam, and Mickey dunked in transition just before the first media timeout to make it 14-6. Kentucky trimmed the gap to one on Towns' jumper at 11:10 but played from behind until Dakari Johnson's three-point play at 6:08 tied the score at 28. A pair of Andrew Harrison free throws near the end of the half gave Kentucky its first lead.Cauley-Stein had two poster dunks and a free throw during Kentucky's 14-5 run early in the second half. Harrison capped the surge with five straight points, giving the Wildcats a 58-45 lead. At the juncture in the game when Kentucky usually pulls away, LSU took a timeout, regrouped, and flipped the script. Out of the huddle, the hosts embarked on the 21-2 run to take their first lead of the second half. Towns, Booker and Cauley-Stein scored around a Mickey free throw to get the Wildcats within one. Mickey's layup at 3:52 pushed the lead back to three, but LSU turned it over three times after that and did not score another point. Towns' hook shot at 1:30 put Kentucky in front, 70-69. After a shot clock violation at the other end, Harrison missed a runner but Towns muscled away the rebound and immediately kicked to Booker. He got fouled and split a pair with 14.8 to play, setting the stages for LSU's final lookout of a timeout. Gray swung to Hornsby, who put up an off-balance 3 from the left wing and missed badly. The buzzer sounded during the scrum for the rebound. LSU scored 40 points in the paint. Kentucky entered the game allowing just 21 paint points per game ... Kentucky avoided being the first top-ranked Wildcat team to blow a halftime lead of four-plus points since Dec. 13, 1951 ... Harrison scored 13 points ... Kentucky's reserves scored 29 points to LSU's seven.-ESPN GNEWS Karl-Anthony Towns posted his fourth doubledouble of the season and hit a late jumper to help No. 1 Kentucky survive another stiff SEC test.Towns tallied 12 points and 13 rebounds and the Wildcats overcame a furious second-half rally by host LSU to beat the Tigers, 71-69.A near-miraculous 21-2 run gave LSU not only life, but a real chance at handing Kentucky its first loss of the season. Keith Hornsby, who scored 17 points, capped the flurry with a pair of layups. FEB.-X, 2015 GEORGETOWN HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR NIGHT On Febuary 10 the G-Men played their final home game against Clermont Northeastern and for the seven seniors; it was their last game they will ever play in that gymnasium. The seven seniors are Tanner Pack, Jacob Miller, Jonathan Staggs, Jake Cropper, Daniel Broadwell, Clinton McElroy and Gage Bradley. Of course the CNE Rockets were no match for our G-Men, especially it being their last game there. We would not lose to them. The final score was 86-65 adding another win to the G-Men successful record. Senior #10, Jacob Miller, earned the player of the game that night finishing with 14 points, 12 assists , and 9 rebounds.; he also had 5 steals. For these seniors these past four years had a lot of success and they will all be missed. Everybody greatly appreciates all their time and effort they have put into the game. GAGE BRADLEY GNEWS On January 30th the G-Men faced off against the Bethel Tate Tigers. From the opening tip our G-Men had control of the game. Bethel had their runs at times, but it just wasn't enough to break are boys down. We kept going at them and eventually the Tigers broke down our boys got the easy win with the score of 80-72. Senior #10, Jacob Miller, was selected player of the game against Bethel. Jacob finished the game with 24 points, 12 assists, and also added on 5 steals. February 3rd the G-Men traveled to Williamsburg to play the Wildcats. Going into the game our G-Men thought that it would be an easy win but little did they know Williamsburg had something waiting for them.. Throughout the first half the Cats kept up with our boys and gave us a little scare. Once the second half started, our boys got the lead up by ten and maintained the lead throughout the rest of the game and came out with a hard fought win. Williamsburg gave our boys everything they got but it wasn't enough to the G-Men. The final score of the game that night was 71-62. Senior #10 Jacob Miller was selected player of the game once again bringing in 18 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and tagged along 6 assists. February 6th our boys played against The Felicity Cardinals in Felicity. This game was an easy win for our boys. Felicity just wasn’t good enough to keep up with our boys. Our boys came in and owned the game from the beginning of the tip. The final score of the game was 77-56, G-Men on top. Senior #35, Jonathan Staggs was selected player of the game that night. Jon added 15 points, 6 rebounds and tagged along 4 steals in their win against Felicity. On February 7th the Eastern Warriors came to Georgetown to face off against our boys. They were no match for us. Our boys completely dominated the game from the tip. It was a very easy win against Eastern. They just couldn't stop our boys and the G-Men came out on top with the score 80-63. Senior #10 Jacob Miller, was selected player of the game that night finishing the game with 20 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. February 13th our G-Men headed to Blanchester to play an improved Wildcats team. From the tip the game was close. Our boys were only up by 1 at the half. But our boys have been in many close games like this, and luckily their experience and their defensive pressure was just too much for Blanchester to handle down the stretch. The G-Men ended up winning with the score 72-62. Senior Jonathan Staggs, was selected player of the game that night finishing the game with 14 points and tagged along four assists. James recently moved into the Ohio Veterans Home and is a hit with all the staff. January 21st was national hug day and James automatically greeted each of us with a hug. As we sat with James we got an insight into his life. Before he came to the Veterans Home he had to give away almost all of his personal belongings. Even though he had to lose some of his personal effects he wouldn’t trade it for the world. He claims the Veterans Home is “One of the best in the state…In the country!” SAMANTHA WADDELL GNEWS Dylan Adams, a member of the GNEWS staff says “This experience was one of the best experiences I’ve had in a long time and I hope for many more to come.” “James was a very interesting man and he was really happy to be away from his normal life and it was really amazing.” FEB.-X, 2015 GEORGETOWN HIGH SCHOOL Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. is a New Orleans rapper. Better known as Lil Wayne, he has definitely made a big name for himself in the hip hop community. At age 9, he joined Cash Money Records as the youngest member to join the label. In 1996 Wayne formed the rap group known as “Hot Boys” with fellow label members Juvenile, Young Turk and Lil’ Doogie; that is where his success is based from. Wayne dropped his first solo album in 1999 titled “The Block Is Hot” which went platinum by the hands of the RIAA. He released a couple more albums that went gold, then he released “Tha Carter” in 2014 which sparked a series of albums titled as “Tha Carter’s”. He released the 2nd installment of the series in 2005, but it wasn’t until “Tha Carter 3” that he reached his highest numbers of album sales. In it’s first week it sold over one million copies in the U.S. It included the hit singles “Lollipop”, “A Mili”, and “Got Money”. He also won a Grammy for Best Rap Album. After the “Carter 3”, he released “Rebirth” which was filled with negative ridicule in 2010 after being released. While serving a jail sentence he released his 8th album “I Am Not A Human Being” which I guess in a way kind of redeemed his previous release. After his time in jail, he got back to work and released “Tha Carter 4” which sold nearly a million copies in its first week in the U.S. Personally it is my favorite Lil Wayne album he has released. He is currently in a dispute with Cash Money Records with the release of the 5th part in the Carter series. So, to hold his fans off until the release he dropped this mix tape. I’m going to start off by saying this review is COMPLETELY opinionated, and if it offends anyone just know you can’t handle criticism. Now, on to the review. I’m basically going to do a run through because I can’t listen to one at a time and not hate my life. Now basically on these mix tapes he remixes popular songs, whether they be rap, pop, or whatever he thinks will work. Within those remixes he usually overuses autotune, talks about the same topics and doesn’t use his long lost talent very well. The standards remain the same for this mix tape. The first “Sorry For The Wait” CONCLUSION: In a nutshell, if you are a fan of Lil Wayne’s music no matter what, you will like this tape. If you aren’t a Wayne fan and expecting a turnaround for him, this isn’t the tape for you. Personally, I would give this album a 4 out of 10 just because he chose some nice beats to remix. Other than that this project sounds like Wayne is putting out music just to waste time. Not a good project. mix tape wasn’t terrible, but it definitely was not impressive by any means. The thing I cannot stand about Wayne is that he overuses auto tune and raps about the same thing every time. Every song and album is based around money, women, drugs, sex, and fighting the guy who lost his girl to Wayne. Lil Wayne is a punch line rapper and that’s all he will ever be. I can prove this because every time he attempts to be serious it’s hard to take it seriously. Lil Wayne has gotten to the point where you want to be excited for his music, but at the same time you can’t expect a whole lot. This project didn’t do much for me. To me, February is any unanswered question. Why is there only 28 days in February? Due to my inability to leave one of my questions unanswered, I decided to do dome research. What I came up with is pretty interesting…at least to me. To answer my question, we have to go pretty far back. We have to go to Rome, Ancient Rome. Our modern calendar is loosely based on the Romans. The Romans only had a 10 month calendar. It was from the spring equinox in March and ended in December. There was no January and February. Some think they were left out because they were winter months and not import to the harvest. Around 713 BC they added January and February to the calendar. February was supposedly handed 28 days, so it would be the only month with an even number of days. You see the Romans believed that even numbers were unlucky, so they might as well make it short. Over time their calendar changed to the one we use today. The one thing that didn’t change was February. Romans seem to influence us a lot, don’t they? If you want me to explain anything about why we do things I will gladly try my very best.
