Elections
Celebrating our 52nd Anniversary
2 - SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, May 2, 2014
thera martin milling
There’s a Primary Election coming up on Tuesday,
May 20, 2014 in Pennsylvania, everybody. I sure hope
people remember that fact and actually go to the polls
and vote. I will remind our SCOOP readers right now
that this is a gubernatorial election year. We’re either
going to keep Tom Corbett as Governor or, he’ll be defeated by a Democrat. Historically the way things seem
to always go is that a Republican will get two terms in
office, then a Democrat will get two terms in office.
That’s the history for the PA
Governor’s seat for many
years now. So Governor Tom
Corbett has had his first four
years, but the question is, will
voters in the keystone state
send him back for four more?
On the face of things Governor Tom Corbett has done
some media-friendly kind of
events in the African American community and in the
Hispanic community here and there, but is that
enough to give him four more years? Every time I
think about the Governor’s stance, for instance,
on helping low-income to poor people with things
as simple as health insurance, and the fact that he
comes off very unsympathetic towards those who
are struggling with real life issues like losing your
home to foreclosure, or losing a full time job with
benefits, only to get sick and then have no health
care, to cutting back on school budgets for major
market cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburg, that’s some
crazy thinking, in my book of politics. Remember
SCOOP Readers, there’s a Primary Election coming on
Tuesday, May 20th. Also don’t forget, just because one
person may be in the lead today and may have held a
lead for months in the Governor’s race, does not mean
they will win on election day. Let’s all go vote, those
who are registered voters and then let’s see what happens
next and who’s still standing when the dust settles.
As far as Democrats who are running for Governor, the
three names I’m hearing most often, are Tom Wolfe, who
is in the lead, PA State Treasurer Rob McCord, and Congresswoman Allyison Schwartz. Also running as a Democrat is Katie McGinty, an ex-state Environmental
Protection Secretary, Businesswoman and Attorney. On
the republican side of course there’s the incumbent. Then
there’s Bob Guzzardi, who is an Attorney and Conservative Activist. From the Green Party, Paul Glover, a progressive Activist and Community Economic Development
Planner is running for Governor and Ken Krawchuk, a
Computer Programmer and frequent candidate is running
from the Libertarian Party. We have a host of candidates
running for Lieutenant Governor. State Representatives
are all running for reelection and state senators in even

numbered districts have to run for reelection this year as
well.
There’s also a very important ballot question for
Philadelphia voters to consider and decide on. A city of
Philadelphia Sub-Contractor Minimum Wage and Benefits Ordinance ballot question is on the May 20, 204 election ballot for voters in Philly. A group called Philadelphians
Organized to Witness, Empower and Rebuild, lobbied the
Philadelphia City Council to put a referendum on the
May 20th election ballot that, if approved, would enforce
a minimum wage of $10.88 per hour and boost benefits
for all employees of city subcontractors. More on the
May 20th Primary Election next week’s SCOOP column.
But there is another election I want to just do a followup on. Two weeks ago, I wrote a column about Dr. Jerry
Young of Jackson Mississippi. He’s currently the Vice
President At Large of the National Baptist Convention,
U.S.A., Inc. He came into Philadelphia April 24, 2014
because he was invited to be the guest of honor at a rally
in support of his candidacy for president of the National
Baptist Convention, U.D., Inc. The event, the rally itself,
was very impressive with a church filled with people
who applauded Dr. Young and welcomed him wholeheartedly into our town. The more than 60 or so ministers
and pastors who were in attendance, amongst the majority in the sanctuary, were and are Dr. Jerry Young Supporters. The pastors who sat in the pulpit during the rally
all have given Dr. Young their endorsement and support,
with the exception of one of them. That one was Rev. Dr.
William Shaw, pastor of White Rock Baptist Church and
a recent past president of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc. However, Dr. Shaw’s very presence
was a strong signal of positivity and the words he spoke
when he took to the podium were very complimentary to
the kind of leader, Dr. Shaw thinks Dr. Young is. In fact,
Dr. Jerry Young served under Dr. Shaw, while he was
president of the NBCUSA, Inc.
Dr. Jerry Young, Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church
in Jackson, Mississippi, took Philadelphia by storm when
he came in for a rally held in his honor at Greater Faith
Baptist Church at 40th and Baring in West Philadelphia.
It was a large contingency of Pastors and Clergy members from across Pennsylvania that decided to host a rally
of support for Dr. Young, who is currently the Vice President at Large of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A.,
Inc. and he wants to be the next National President of the
Convention.
As Dr. Young addressed those gathered at Greater
Faith Baptist Church April 24th, he came with passion
and energy and love for the Convention as he delivered
his message.
Dr. Young said, “How do you support ministries and
missions? We have to institutionalize what we do. Every
time we change Presidents, we seem to change our mission. The Bible says somebody planted it and somebody
else watered it so God can give the increase. Our problem is somebody plants something and then the next person comes along and digs it up. You can’t get a harvest if
everybody keeps digging up. Dr. Shaw became President.
He had a lot of work to do. He finally got the foundation
laid. Then his time was up. Next President comes in, and
the denomination says build a church and he’s supposed
to build on the foundation that’s already been laid. Then
his time is up. The next President comes on the scene and
he’s not supposed to go build a McDonald’s. He’s supposed to keep building on the church. We have to accomplish what God has called us to do. The Preacher has to
be larger than the man.
This land is bigger than a man. It’s not about the man.
Give what you need so you can have a healthy church.
Hear me tonight. We have to change the paradigm.
I am so glad to be able to tell you that I see it with my

The seed experiment
ChildWatch
Celebrating our 52nd Anniversary
marian wright edelman
A perennial favorite science project from preschool on up is the “seed experiment”: A child
plants identical seeds in two pots. She places
the first pot inside a dark cupboard and leaves it
there, and she puts
the second one in a
sunny spot and waters it every day.
She waits to see
what will happen.
It’s very easy for
even the youngest
children to figure
out that their
seedlings need the
basics—sunlight
and water—if they are going to survive
and thrive.
The same is true for children, and “the
basics” during children’s earliest years
can have long lasting effects. Arloc Sherman, senior researcher at the Center on Budget and Policy
Priorities and one of the contributors to the new Harvard
Education Press book Improving the Odds for America’s
Children, put it this way: “I think sometimes we forget to
say how important for children’s futures the day-to-day
basic assistance of food, clothing, shelter is . . . We’ve
had help from the research community recently, striking
studies that help make the case that when you just provide
the basics, that’s one key cornerstone for children’s future
success. So it’s not just that we’re meeting an important
need—which would be enough in itself—but we’re also
providing for opening future doors of opportunity.”
He pointed to a 2012 study on the long term effects of
what began as the food stamps program. Researchers
went back to the earliest days of the program when it was
rolled out county by county to identify children who had
access to food stamps in early childhood and whose
mothers had access during their pregnancies. They
tracked their progress from the 1960s and 1970s into
adulthood, comparing them to similar children who didn’t
have access to food stamps. The results showed the power
of nutrition: the children who had access to food stamps
were less likely to have stunted growth, be obese, or have
heart disease as adults—and the positive effects weren’t
just health-related. One of the largest differences was that
children in families with food stamps were 18 percent
more likely to graduate from high school.
This echoes other studies on the positive effects of federal nutrition programs that found needy children who received food assistance before age five were in better
health as adults and girls who received food assistance
were more likely to complete more schooling, earn more
money, and not rely on safety net programs as adults. Putting food on children’s plates helps build healthy minds
and bodies today and helps set children up for better futures later. And the benefits don’t end there. Better graduation rates mean better jobs with higher salaries with
cascading benefits to the community, the national economy, and the next generation.
The case for providing the basics for all children in
America is hard to refute. According to the U.S. Census
Bureau, 2.2 million children were lifted out of poverty by
the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP),
formerly known as food stamps, in 2012. Yet right now

SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, May 2, 2014 -3
we are fast approaching a critical time for hungry children: summer vacation. School-based federal nutrition
programs have proved to be a lifeline for needy children.
In fiscal year 2012 more than 21 million children received
free or reduced-price lunch through the National School
Lunch Program and nearly 11 million children received
free and reduced price breakfast. Hunger doesn’t end on
the last day of school—yet only 11 percent of the number
of children who relied on those lunches during the school
year received meals through the Summer Food Service
Program. Even though the program is 100 percent federally funded and can create desperately needed jobs for
cafeteria workers and others during the summer months,
many states and communities have created needless bureaucratic hurdles to establishing summer feeding sites resulting in not nearly enough sites to serve all eligible
children. But it’s not too late to find out how you can
help—or how children you know can participate.
The Children’s Defense Fund is encouraging CDF
Freedom Schools® partners to use the summer feeding
program to provide nutritious meals and snacks for children attending summer CDF Freedom Schools programs.
The USDA, which administers the summer feeding program, says there are many ways individuals and organizations can get involved: “You can serve the meals, promote
the program, provide transportation, volunteer at summer
food sites, or even go out and find sponsors.” The
USDA’s “Summer Meals Toolkit” provides information
on sponsors, sites, links to state agencies, and much more,
or call 1-866-3-HUNGRY or 1-877-8-HAMBRE or use
this online map. If there are not enough summer feeding
sites in your community, ask why not. Help make sure
children in your community are getting the basics and that
there are no hungry children in your community this summer.
Many plants blossom and thrive all summer long. Children should be able to do the same.
Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children's Defense
Fund whose Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure
every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe
Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. For

Most people believe what we were taught in
school: the USA is a “Democracy”, a representative republic, that the US economy is free and
open; the US is fair, a land of equal opportunity
and this is the best system known to man in the
history of mankind. While most Black folks know
deep down inside this has never been the case, many of
us still are enmeshed in that insane groupthink and we
follow in lock step with the okey-doke and flim flam despite ample evidence in our collective history and personal experience this is just not so.
We do it to get along and to be able make a living at
the cost of compromising our souls. Even white folks
who are seeing their notion of the American Dream evaporate before their eyes on a daily basis still hold on to the
conditioning and brainwashing they received and they
are still being fed by the mind control apparatus that this
country is exceptional, good and wholesome; the best
thing since sliced bread.
But a new study that will be released later this year by
a team of Princeton and Northwestern University researchers has documented what many of us already
knew, a small clique of rich folks run this country. Researchers Martin Gilens and Benjamin Page conclude
and state in their report entitled Testing Theories of
American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups and Average
Citizens, “The central point that emerges from our research is that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent
impacts on U.S. government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence. Our results provide substantial
support for theories of Economic Elite Domination and
for theories of Biased Pluralism, but not for theories of
Majoritarian Electoral Democracy or Majoritarian Pluralism.”

and mass pluralistic movements have little or no bearing
on policy or outcomes. The recent Occupy Wall Street
movement (which was subsequently bum rushed and put
down by the government) came to the same conclusions.
OWS referred to the American Oligarchs as the one per
cent (1%).
Gilens and Page’s assessment is not a new revelation.
It has been this way since the very beginning as author
and researcher G. William Domhoff says, “Who has predominant power in the United States? The short answer,
from 1776 to the present, is: Those who have the money - or more specifically, who own income-producing land
and businesses -- have the power. George Washington
was one of the biggest landowners of his day; presidents
in the late 19th century were close to the railroad interests; for the Bush family, it was oil and other natural resources, agribusiness, and finance. In this day and age,
this means that banks, corporations, agribusinesses, and
big real estate developers, working separately on most
policy issues, but in combination on important general issues -- such as taxes, opposition to labor unions, and
trade agreements with other countries -- set the rules
within which policy battles are waged. While this conclusion may at first seem too simple or direct, leaving little
room for elected officials or voters, the reasons behind it
are complex. They involve an understanding of social
classes, the role of experts, the two-party system, and the
history of the country, especially Southern slavery. In
terms of the big world-historical picture, and the Four
Networks theory of power advocated on this site, large
economic interests rule in America because there are no
rival networks that grew up over a long and complex history: There is no one big church, as in many countries in
Europe, no big government, as it took to survive as a nation-state in Europe and no big military until after 1940
(which is not very long ago) to threaten to take over the
government. So, the only power network of any consequence in the history of the United States has been the
economic one, which under capitalism generates a business-owning class and a working class, along with small
businesses and skilled craft workers who are self-employed, and a relatively small number of highly trained
professionals such as architects, lawyers, physicians, and
scientists. In this context, the key reason why money can
rule -- i.e., why the business owners who hire workers
can rule -- is that the people who work in the factories
and fields were divided from the outset into free and
slave, white and black, and later into numerous immigrant ethnic groups as well, making it difficult for workers as a whole to unite politically to battle for higher
wages and better social benefits.” The Class-Domination
Theory of Power by G. William Domhoff

The emerald is the stone for the month of May
Archeologists have traced the history of emeralds back
to 3000 BC in ancient Egypt and India. Cleopatra prized
her emeralds more than any other stone. One of the
world’s largest emeralds dates back to 1695, weight 214.8
carats and is about 10 cn high. One side is inscribed with
prayers and the other with opulent flowers. Ancient
scholar Pliny writes, “Sight is refreshed by gazing upon
this stone.” Roman emperor Nero took his advice by wearing sunglasses made of emerald to watch the gladiators.
Omar Khayyam, a Persian mathematician and philosopher, took a copy of his book, with a cover made from
gold and over 1,000 emeralds and rubies aboard the Titanic. Emerald is believed to insure loyalty, improve memory, quicken intelligence and forecast upcoming events. It
was once thought that if you kept an emerald under your
pillow you would dream about the future.

Philadelphia Works President and CEO discusses
skills necessary for students’ success
Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
On Wednesday, April 16, Mark Edwards, President and
CEO of Philadelphia Works, participated in a panel discussion on the importance of employers and educational
institutions working together to address the growing
“skills gap” of employer need to worker readiness. The
panel, entitled “The Quality and Skills Challenge: How
We Can Meet It,” was part of the daylong Employer-Educator Forum, presented by the Association of American
Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), at the Sheraton
Downtown Philadelphia Hotel.
The panel was moderated by Debra Humphreys, who
serves as the Vice President for Policy and Public Engagement at the AAC&U. Other panelists present for the
session included Wendell Pritchett, Chancellor of Rutgers
University-Camden; Nicole Wormley, Manager of Diversity Recruitment and University Relations at Campbell
Soup Company; and Helen Giles-Gee, President of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. They addressed
how higher education leaders, as well as employers, can
provide students with the practical skills they will need in
the modern workforce.
The discussion focused on the gap between the skills
students acquire at colleges and universities and the skills
they must have in order to build a successful career after
college. Hands-on internships were among the solutions
offered to bridge that gap. Mr. Edwards spoke to the importance of adult internships which allows unemployed
individuals to improve their skills while also learning
about the industries that interest them. All of the panelists
encouraged communication between employers and
higher education leaders to ensure that colleges and universities are offering students the coursework and professional development needed to succeed upon graduation.

Just before the rally concluded there was a free-will offering and let me just say, the Pastors and Ministers and
lay people who packed into Greater Faith Baptist Church,
where Rev. Dr. Larry Marcus is the pastor, they opened
their wallets and purses to raise money for Dr. Young’s
campaign for President. I will not tell all about the large
amounts given by the clergy and congregation on hand,
and truth be told, I don’t know the total. I wasn’t in the
back room counting the money. But I know the large
amounts that were called out, during the service. It was
impressive. Thus far, Philadelphia has hosted the most
impressive rally of all the cities where Dr. Young has
traveled thus far. Go Philly. Some of the leading pastors
on hand who stood at the podium and endorsed Dr. Jerry

The National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. one of the
oldest African American organizations in the nation,
shapes the religious and often beliefs of several million
Christians throughout the world. The Baptist World Center, national headquarters of NBC, USA, Inc. is located in
Nashville, TN. In 1880, one hundred and fifty-one people
from 11 states met in Montgomery, Alabama, to organize
what is called “The Foreign Mission Convention”. In
1895, two other organizations – the National Baptist Education Convention, and the American Baptist Convention – met with the Foreign Mission Convention in
Atlanta, GA, and formed the National Baptist Convention. In 1915, the National Baptist Convention was incorporated and became the National Baptist Convention,

home and foreign missions, encourage and support
Christian education, publish and distribute Sunday

Mr. Edwards stressed the point that Philadelphia Works is
often working with individuals who have not completed
a college degree.
“In terms of the number of diverse job seekers, one of
the things we are open about is that not everybody is
going to go to college,” Mr. Edwards said. “Not every
person going through the high school system is the right
fit for college. Our job is to respond to the common
threads or skills identified by our employer partners in
order to create job training and skill development pro-
grams for job seekers to fill skill gaps, which will lead
directly to employment opportunities across a number of
sectors.”
Mr. Edwards highlighted Philadelphia Works’ training
initiatives in modern manufacturing fields, like 3D printing, which create opportunities for those individuals who
may not want to attend college. One of the biggest challenges in preparing individuals for the workforce is ensuring that their training will help them to build a career,
not just satisfy the requirements of one specific job.
African and African American artists
get top billing in Philadelphia
Among the many treasures that have contributed to
Philadelphias reputation as one of the world’s great art
centers are several collections that celebrate works by
African and African-American artists. One of the first
collectors to value artistic expression from across the Diaspora was Dr. Albert Barnes, a progressive thinker committed to showing the influence of African art on modern
Western artists a practice that’s evident in the distinct
wall ensembles he arranged at his famed Barnes Foundation. Today, his collection, along with those found in
other institutions throughout the city, comprise a fascinating assemblage of cross-cultural art.
African Art
Dr. Albert Barnes’ interest in African art dates back to
the early 1920s when he acquired traditional African
masks and sculptures from the Dan and possibly Kulango
societies of Côte d’Ivoire, as well as from Guinea and
northeast Liberia. Visitors can see theses works, which he
describes as the purest expression of the three-dimensional form, at the Barnes Foundation. Home to a remarkable collection of paintings from the masters of
modern art, the Barnes Foundation’s significant collection of African art is displayed in remarkable ensembles
that show how the likes of Picasso and Modigliani were
influenced by the stylistic and symbolic forms in African
art. 20th Street & Benjamin Franklin Parkway, (866)

The Penn Museum, or University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, boasts an extensive collection of African art and artifacts such as masks,
sculptures, instruments, famed Benin bronzes, embroidered garments and jewelry. Visitors can also marvel at a
wide range of other materials from throughout the continent, which are on permanent display in the African and
Egyptian galleries. 3260 South Street, (215) 898-4000,

Last week, Walker and Willie had that special meeting

grabbing Willie into a tight hug. Walker began singing
"Every Praise" as tears streamed down the boy's face.
Walker then exclaimed during the middle of the song,
"This is the song he was singing y'all."
Although Willie is back home with his family the man
that abducted him remains on the loose. Atlanta police
have circulated a sketch of the man and continues to seek
support from a community that has rallied behind Willie.
We here in Philadelphia support the heroic acts of Willie
and pray that the person who abducted him will be
caught soon.

April 26 with Comcast Cares Day. Comcast Cares
Day is the nation’s largest single-day corporate
volunteer effort and has surpassed more than 3
million volunteer hours and 500,000 volunteers
since it first began in 2001. Now in its 13th year,
the annual day of service has also contributed more
than $14 million to local non-profit organizations.
Philabundance has taken a stronghold of the
hunger issue in the Delaware Valley, implementing
both emergency relief and also long-term strategies
to strengthen the hunger safety net. There is no
quick fix, but with a unified dedication from our
partners, donors and the public at large, we are creating innovative programs and support to our agencies that make nutritious food accessible to all. See more at: www.philabundance. org/aboutus/mission-history/#sthash.RwDQchIH.dpuf

The Influence of Hansberry's Play on Tupac Amaru
Shakur and Generation of Actors and Musicians
"I didn't know what I was doing back then, even
though I was good and everything. I wish I had them
now [Hazel Scottt and Ernie McClintock who taught Pac
to become an incredible actor and the relationshp between daily living and theatre in the heart and soul of
Harlem] because they are both great actors. I learned
from them only in hindsight. When I got admitted to the
School of Performing Arts in Baltimore, the piece I used
to get in was Walter Younger from "A Raisin in the Sun."
The only reason I picked that part is because I had
watched Levi do that over and over again from me playing Travis that I just knew I could do this! If I am just
half as good as Levi, they are going to let me in. And
that's sho-nuff how it all started. I told Ernie that that was
the best schooling I could have gotten. That coupled with
the Baltimore School for the Arts and The Street really
gave me the unique experience that I have now to which
I think no one can duplicate. It's the street, the school
and the black community acting ensemble teaching that I
have learned."
.. Tupac Shakur
Few of those who rush to the Barrymore theater to
see Denzel Washington and LaTanya Richardson Jackson
(wife of Samuel L. Jackson in Lorraine Hansberry's classic play, " A Raisin in the Sun" have an idea how Raisin
helped to raise/raze/race Pac. And the fact that Raisin
continues to raise the consciousness of so many 55 years
after its Broadway debut is cause for celebration.
Sweet Lorraine in Philadelphia, 1959
On 11 March 1959, fifty five years ago, Lorraine
Hansberry's play premiered at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on New York's Broadway. James Baldwin describes
the young playwright two years earlier:
"The first time I ever saw Lorraine was at the Actor's
Studio in the winer of 57-58. She was there as an observer of the Workshop Production of Giovanni's Room.
She sat way up in the bleachers taking on some of the
biggest names in the American theater because she had
liked the play and they, in the main, hadn't. I am enormously grateful to her, she seemed to speak for me and
afterwards she talked to me with a gentleness and generosity never to be forgotten. a small, shy, determined
person with that strength dictated by absolutely impersonal ambition, she was not trying to 'make it' --she was
trying to keep the faith."
Lorraine Hansberry was Both An Artist and Witness
Baldwin continues, "We really met, however in
Philadelphia, in 1959, when A Raisin in the Sun was at
the beginning of it's amazing career. Much has been written about this play. I personally feel that it will demand a
far less guilty and constricted people than the present-day
Americans to be able to assess it at all, as an historical
achievement... anyway, no one can gainsay it's importance. What is relevant here is that I had never in my life
seen so many black people in the theater. And the reason is that never before, in the entire history of the American theater, had so much of the truth of black people's
lives been seen on stage. Black people ignored the theater because the theater had ignored them. But in Raisin,
black people recognized that house and all the people in
it -- the mother, the son, the daughter and the daughter in-
Lorraine Hansberry
law, and supplied the play with an interpretive element
which could not be present in the mind of white people; a
kind of claustrophobic terror, created not only by their
knowledge of the house but their knowledge of the
streets. And when the curtain came down Lorraine and I
found ourselves in the backstage alley, where she was
immediately mobbed. I produced a pen and Lorraine
handed me her handbag and began signing autographs.
"It only happens once,' she said. I stood there and
watched. I watched the people who loved Lorraine, who
loved the people for what they brought to them, and
watched Lorraine who loved the people for what they
brought to her. It was not, for her, a matter of being admired. She was being corroborated and confirmed. She
was wise enough and honest enough to recognize that
black American artists are a very special case. One is not
merely an artist, and one is not judged merely as an artist,
the black people crowding around Lorraine, whether or
not they considered her an artist, assuredly considered
her a witness."
ACT 2
Portray A Black Family on Stage
Interviewer: The question, I'm sure is asked you many
times -- you may be tired of it -- someone comes up to
you and says, 'This is not really a Negro play; why, this
could be about anybody! It's a play about people!' What
is your reaction? What do you say?
Lorraine Hansberry: Well, I hadn't noticed the contradiction, because I've always been under the impression
that Negroes are people. But actually, it is an excellent
question, because invariably that has been the point of
reference. And I do know what people are trying to say is
that this is not what they consider the traditional treatment of the Negro in the theater.... I have told people
that not only is this a Negro family, specifically and definitely culturally, but it's not even a New York family or
a southern Negro family. It is specifically Southside
Chicago.... that kind of care that kind of attention to detail. In other words I think people, to the extent that we
accept them and believe them as who they're supposed
to be, to that extent they can become everybody. So I
would say it is definitely a Negro play before it is anything else...

Transitional housing for homeless veterans: Richard’s Place
Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
Pointman for Veterans
10 - SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, May 2, 2014
Pointman Solders Heart Ministry in collaboration with Diversified Housing Services
(DHS) will hold a grand opening of Richard’s
Place, a transitional housing stand-down center
for homeless veterans, on Saturday, May 30,
2014, starting at 12 Noon. It is an outgrowth
of planning and work started in 2009 when
President Barack Obama and VA Secretary Eric
K. Shinseki announced the goal of ending Veteran homelessness by the end of 2015.
Richard Place is where “advocacy and service” meets and are inextricably tied to ensure
that the dignity and benefits of and for veterans are acknowledged and received. POINTMAN’s outreach and stand-down model
establishes meets President Obama’s national
“zero tolerance” policy for vulnerable veterans
by expanding proven programs and launching
innovative services to prevent veterans from
falling into homelessness.
Our approach to homelessness addresses the
specific developmental challenges, emotional
needs, housing requirements and systematic barriers facing men as they transition from homelessness back to the
community and to strengthen the City of Philadelphia’s
veterans service and support infrastructure for its approximately 88,000 veterans.
Our holistic program requires the veteran to be engaged in every aspect of their assessment, case plan and
any subsequent changes to the case plan. By doing this,
the veteran sets his own goals/objectives and the case
manager works with him to create the action steps necessary to attain those goals/objectives. All action steps are
designed to be small, manageable and measurable. Supportive services are made available to our residents
through a network of collaborating service providers.
(“Richard’s Place”) is located at 25 E High Street, and
is situated in the Germantown area of Philadelphia. The 3
story mansion consists of 10,000 sq. ft of living space, is
handicapped accessible, contains 7 bathrooms, a sunroom, commercial grade kitchen, ample open community
space, a full basement and parking in the rear of the
property. The site is equipped to bed 30-bed facility
staffed 24 hours/365 days a year. Program staff members
are available Monday-Friday including scheduled
PA 19134 on Tuesdays and
Thursday between the hours
of 10:00am to 2:00pm. Or
any day by appointment at
Richard’s Place, 25 E. High
Street, Philadelphia, PA

evening hours. Residents are allowed to stay at the facility for a maximum of 24 months, depending on the treatment plan/progress of each resident. Residents pay room
fees based on 30% of weekly income and are required to
place at least 20% of their net income into a savings account so they can accumulate the deposit/security monies
they will need to secure permanent housing once they
leave the facility.
While our program targets the most vulnerable, honorably discharged veterans that were formerly incarcerated,
we will take in any homeless veterans up to our housing
capacity wherever we find them. We also have four designated beds for veterans with "other than dishonorable"
discharges.

of Philadelphia. Founded in 1848, St. Joseph’s Hospital
is one of the oldest hospitals in the City of Philadelphia.
Girard Medical Center traces its roots to 1927, when it
opened on its current site. The two hospitals are located
eight city blocks apart in lower North Central Philadelphia -- an area geographically close to downtown
Philadelphia, but very distant in terms of health care access, economic status and social and cultural makeup.
North Philadelphia is an area that suffers from virtually all of the burdens of economic deprivation and the
Hospitals remain among the few institutional pillars that
have remained committed to the community. The Hospitals developed on separate independent paths, governance and management until their paths converged
together during the 1980’s.
Did you know that NPHS is the predominant economic institution in its community? NPHS employs over
1,600 individuals, over 80% of whom live in the City of
Philadelphia and 40% of whom live in North Philadelphia. NPHS is a vital element in the North Central
Philadelphia Empowerment Zone as designated and
funded by the implementation of Empowerment Zone
programs. These two Hospitals have saved many lives
not to mention giving jobs to many people that needed
and deserved a good job working for a good institution.
What is wrong? Did they help the wrong people? Who
could actually tell me that addiction never hit anyone in
their family? I mean drugs have hurt everyone. Addiction
does not hate on any family. It will destroy all no matter
what color race or religion. Both of these Hospitals have
not just saved lives in North Philly but lives from all
over. Now The Hospitals need help. They need new computers. Not everyone cares about the computers that they
have. Computers will get put to the bottom of the list.
However just think. It could be your child or your grand-

about the Hospitals but I will
save it for next Carl Davis Young and his son Jamil
week.
Right now I want to tell you a story about a fine young
man named Carl Davis Young. This young man grew up
right around here in North Central Philly. As a little guy
he made me look like a quiet kid, but we never gave up
on him even though as an adult he went away for about 7
years. That’s not counting the years that he went away as
a juvenile because it is said that those years don’t count.
However in my most humble opinion, he has made a
wonderful change. Today he is sitting with me in the
SCOOP office with his son and showing that he is a very
good father and role model.
As corny as this will sound, I am very proud to see him
like this. When he was young I would hate Halloween
because he and his friends would hit me with eggs because I was old. These kids were no joke and then we
would get them and give it to them but they did not care.
That is the ways were. They took whatever punishment

we had for them and we always tried to talk to them to let
them know this is not the way to go. I can’t tell you how
good I feel to see him now and know that some of the
things that were said paid off. You see if you are able to
help one person it is all worth it even when you would
rather be doing something else.
This is a great way of showing change. He wants to
teach his own son good life skills. Before he came back
to Philadelphia he was in Washington DC working as a
mentor with a program that would teaches young people
good life skills. However there came a time when he saw
that he needed to take care of his own family and children right here in Philly. This is one reason he came back
and he and his son are making great progress. He is currently working with the Express Yore self urban response
crisis center located at 1554 West Oakdale Street. He has
been involved with this organization for about 4 years.
His main goal with this organization is basically to educate our youth on how to resist negative peer pressure
and their own ill thoughts, as well as enlightening young
folks on financing themselves and creating their own
source of income through creating their own positive employment. Carl said that our President, Barack Obama
made a speech on the first inauguration day where he encouraged all Americans to start their own businesses and
learn to do for self.
I was very inspired by this young African American
man that wants to express that all young people can
achieve their own dreams and visions and move on to do
great things. Now if this can come from a young person
that had a problem at one time then I know that all of us
grown up people can find away to fix any Hospital that is
in our community. I will have more info next week. With
love, honor and respect from your Mayor of Girard Avenue, Toby Rich. Peace.

spring-cleaning your body and brain.
1. Drink water. Research shows that upping your water
intake helps rev up your energy and digestion- and can
even help give your skin a nice glow. Recommended
amount: at least the amount equivalent to half your body
weight in ounces. (So, if you're 140 pounds, drink 70
ounces of water a day.)
2. Load up on greens. "Raw, steamed, sauteed,
chopped, shredded-no matter how you eat them, they
have lots of nutrients that will help make your skin glow,
rid your body of toxins, and rev up your immune system," Fierman says. "They're loaded with fiber and phytonutrients to help your organs do their best work. My
favorites include frozen spinach blended in a smoothie
for breakfast, hummus and veggies wrapped in a collard
greens for lunch, and kale sauteed with coconut oil and

so focus on ingredients instead of nutrition facts. Your

4. Meditate. "When I sit upright, hands on my lap facing upward, for at least one minute and take at least three
really deep breaths, I automatically get a dose of positivity, a wave of calmness, and a jolt of motivation," Fierman says. "Play a pretty song with positive lyrics, or sit
in silence and just listen and breathe. Your to-do list will
seem way less overwhelming afterward. I promise."
5. Sweat. "You must sweat at least once a day," she
says. "Choose an exercise that you love-dance, stretch
class, biking, swimming-and do it just for 20 to 30 minutes per day. Sign up for a group class or pre-pay so you
don't have an excuse not to go. Pack your workout
clothes with you when you go to work-or better yet, wear
your workout tank under a cute blazer and you'll be half
ready to hit the gym later on."
6. Rest. Sleep is one of the keys to a happy life, Fierman says-it refuels your body and brain. "Your digestive
system needs time to reboot, and your cells need time to
regenerate. You only get one body in life, so you are as
important as those late-night emails," she says.
7. Cleanse. "I'm talking about cleansing where you
sleep (your bedroom), where you work (your office),
where you bathe (your bathroom), and where you eat
(your kitchen)," she says. "A clean home, a gorgeous
desk, and a kitchen stocked with good-for-you foods will
help you feel and look fab. Make your bedside table Pinterest-worthy (add a bud vase and place a fresh stem with
a flower; keep it tidy). I bet your dreams will be more
lucid and you may even get more restful, uncluttered
sleep!"
8. Feel your goal. "Want toned arms so you can feel
your best walking down the aisle at your best friend's
wedding? Focus on the feeling of feeling fabulous, rather
than the arms themselves," she says. "When you focus on
how you want to feel, rather than the goal itself, it takes
the pressure off and the goal so much more attainable.
Write down three feelings and post it up in a place that
you can see to hold you accountable."

Get rid of your Anger
C H E S T E R , PA
rev. dr. wm. rocky brown, 3rd
Celebrating our 53rd Anniversary
We are living in a society where folk are just
angry. Angry because we are dealing with
some type of hurt. We are dealing with childhood hurts such as mental, emotional, physical
and sexual abuse. Our parents, siblings and
friends hurt us. We are dealing with relationship hurts, peer hurts,
work place hurts, societal
hurts (racism and discrimination), friendship and
family hurts and because
we hurt, we have a tendency to hurt others. Yes,
"Hurt People, Hurt People". Anger is a natural
part of being human and
can be positive or negative. That's why Paul says
don't sin by letting your anger control you.
When your anger controls you, you do foolish things.
You do things that can cause regret and even cause you to
get arrested. Anger causes health problems such as heart

LORD HELP US TO HAVE A FORGIVING HEART
SO THAT OUR ANGER AND HURT DOESN'T
BECOME OUR SIN. AMEN.
The Apostle Paul states this about "ANGER"...“don’t
sin by letting anger control you. Don’t let the sun go
down while you are still angry, for anger gives a
foothold to the devil." (Ephesians 4:26, 27 NLT)
conditions, diabetes, and high blood pressure just to
name a few. Yes, we are hurt people, but Paul says don't
let the hurt/anger control you; don't go to bed with that
anger because then it becomes a spirit of revenge rather
than forgiveness. It becomes sin and the devil will have
control of your mindset and heart. This is the situation of
young black males who are attacking and killing each
other. I believe the only thing that can change this is the
renewing of the minds and hearts of people. We must re-
place our hurt and anger with forgiveness and love. Paul
also says to us "Don’t copy the behavior and customs of
this world, but let God transform you into a new person
by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to
know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and
perfect." (Romans 12:2 NLT) So beloved my message
today is this: As you ask for forgiveness you must forgive. Seek Gods love to get rid of your hurt and anger.
Remember: "Anger is just one letter short of Danger".
Now, who hurt you? What are you angry about?
This is Rev Dr Wm Rocky Brown, 3rd letting you
know that GOD and I Love you and we approve this
message because we want to motivate your mind, body
& soul.
So be happy and enjoy the blessings of The LORD
today my friend! Please subscribe to my website to continue to receive these daily messages at:

Each May, groups
and organizations
around the nation
join in celebrating
Older Americans
Month. Established
in 1963, Older
Americans Month
provides an opportunity for our nation to
recognize seniors for
their many contributions and share important information to help them stay
healthy and active. This year’s theme is
“Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow.” Social
Security has something to help keep you
safe and healthy: a suite of online services.

there. The charts, figures and data are relatively current;
but keep in mind it takes time to gather the available data
such as census information, tax returns, income statements and corporate profit and loss data so it will not reflect real time up to the moment numbers but this is as
close as it gets.
We must wake up to the realities facing us and see
things as they are not as we have been duped into believing they are. Domhoff being a sociologist looks at the
upper class and sees them similarly to C. Wright Mills
who was also a sociologist who wrote the seminal work
The Power Elite on them.
It is possible to make huge sums of money in this
country. Yes it is possible to move up like the fictitious
TV character George Jefferson, but for the most part
most of us are stuck and will remain in the same class
and social strata we were born into plus or minus a few
more gizmos, gadgets, trinkets and dollars. The fact of
the matter is unless you are one of the few; the window
of upward mobility is closing for most Americans.
To make it now you must either have skills or acumen
needed by the ruling elites, become a tool or stooge of
this group or are active on the flip side of that coin which
is some level of organized crime or corruption. “The idea
of the power elite intertwines class theory and organizational theory, two theories which are often thought of as
distinctive or even as rivals. The basis for the intertwining of the two theories is to be found in the role and composition of the boards of directors that govern every large
profit and nonprofit organization in the United States. It
is on boards of directors that the values and goals of the
upper class are integrated with those of the organizational
hierarchy. Upper-class directors insure that their interests
are infused into the organizations they control, but the
day-to-day organizational leaders on the board are able to
harmonize class interests with organizational principles.”
Ibid.
The same idea holds true for so called legitimate businesses and organized crime. They are interconnected
based upon a common ethos and consciousness. What
Domhoff is saying is the consciousness, world view, valTHURSDAY • MAY 8, 2014 Evening

tion to a local office, you can use our secure, free online
services to handle much of your Social Security business.
With the amount of time you save, you’ll have more time
to spend with the grandkids or have time for a brisk walk
around the neighborhood or local park. Before going for
that walk, though, visit www.socialsecurity.gov. Whether
you already receive benefits or you’re just starting to
think about retirement, it’s a great time to open a my Social Security account. What’s my Social Security? It’s a
secure online account that allows you immediate access
to your personal Social Security information. During
your working years, you can use my Social Security to
view your Social Security Statement to check your earnings record and see estimates of the future retirement,
disability and survivor benefits you and your family may
receive. Check it out at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. After you check your online Social Security
Statement, be sure to visit our Retirement Estimator. Like
ues, motives, morality (or lack there of) of the ruling
elites are what fashion organizations, institutions, governments and our reality. In short these elites are the ones
who build and run The Matrix we are trapped in! This
Matrix is all around us, it infuses everything both the “legitimate corporate businesses” and the myriad crime
schemes which are intertwined together to enrich a handful of people at the top.
For example the corporate CEOs of the Military Industrial Complex companies like Lockheed Martin,
Raytheon and General Electric are in cahoots with the
Wall Street international bankers who are in cahoots with
the CIA since the bankers launder the money from the
drugs the CIA brings in from Columbia and Afghanistan,
the CIA is in cahoots with the mobsters who do the dirty
work of distributing the drugs into our communities
while the military invades more countries to gain, control
and maintain access to drugs and other mineral resources
who are in cahoots with the local police and politicians
who pass legislation written by lobbyists working for the
corporations to pass resolutions and laws authorizing
more prisons to lock up the street level drug sellers, fund
wars based upon lies that use our tax dollars to underwrite and subsidize these wars, the private prisons and
assorted businesses to make the elites even richer while
the police brutalize ordinary citizens to intimidate us
(like they did OWS) to enforce the status quo.
In effect our children are rotting in prisons, dying in
illegal wars to benefit the CEOs and the power elites who
have duped the masses into believing we the people have
the power. The scam is so thorough and systemic because
the think tanks, foundations, corporations and government spend billions paying the media, schools and universities to lie to us so they keep their dastardly agenda
and deeds secret. Everybody gets rich but the average
citizen.
Even the war on terror is a scam, a way for the Military
Industrial Complex, weapons makers, large construction
companies, oil pipeline makers, riggers, refineries, mercenaries and their corporate owners to make enormous
sums of money. This is what a corrupt oligarchy looks
like. Take a look in the mirror, this is America.
The comments in the column are the opinion of the
writer and are not an opinion or reflection of the
beliefs of the SCOOP U.S.A.
