There’s several news stories that I’ve covered in the
last week or so, where I’ve
also taken pictures that I
would love to share. The last
few days leading up to my
“deadline” time for turning in
my column to the SCOOP
however, I was still tossing it
around in my head, which
news story I would write
about this week. Should I write about the very
good community meeting that State Representative Rosita C. Youngblood hosted a week ago at
Opportunities Towers I and II at 1717 W. Hunting
Park Avenue? That meeting was to discuss possibly having another Dollar Store, (this one A Family Dollar Store), in the 1900 block of W. Hunting
Park Avenue. Or, should I write about Councilman
Curtis Jones, Jr.’s upcoming Block Captains Boot
Camp event in August?
I think I’ll take my chances and hold those stories for
another day so I can express with the rest of us folk in
Philly who care, the hurt we feel over the loss of three
young children at the corner of Germantown and W. Allegheny Avenue over this past weekend.
The children whose lives were stolen from them by the
dangerous and deadly acts of two of the world’s dumbest
criminals, while they were in the midst of a car-jacking
situation were 15-year-old Keiearra Williams, 10-yearold Thomas Joseph Reed, and 7-year-old Terrence
Williams. My heart cries for their loss, but I do believe in
angels and I feel certain where they are now, as much as
their family and friends will miss them, is a better place.
I believe it to be a place of angels. This tragedy, this murder was horrible. No one saw this one coming. People are
outraged and the main reason why is because it was dangerous reckless behavior perpetrated by two young men,
one appearing to be Hispanic, the other African American
-- but what the “H-e”, double hockey sticks were those
two losers thinking? Oh my bad. Dumb criminals don’t
“think”. If there is any blessing in this nightmare for the
Williams family is that the Philadelphia Police department worked very swiftly to find and apprehend the one
loser, while the other turned himself in.
I hope they both realize it’s a wrap for them. They’re
done. Cooked like a goose, never to see the light of day
again, so-to-speak, and certainly never ever to be free
again. They’ve taken three lives while in the act of committing several other very serious federal level crimes, so
their behinds are DONE.
As it should be.
I recognize that no one has appointed me judge and

to have someone else’s life, their fate, in my hands, when

Philadelphia Sheriff in massive hiring program
The Office of the Sheriff of Philadelphia City and
County is now engaged in hiring more Deputies in less
than a year than any time during its 300-year history.
Seventy-two new Deputy Sheriffs have already been
hired to transport prisoners to and from courts and
guard Philadelphia’s nine court facilities. At least another 30 will be hired over the next several months.
The office, said Sheriff Jewell Williams, was seriously understaffed when he was elected to the position
in January 2012, and the need for more deputies has
grown in large part to the opening of the new Family
Court Building later this year, which will require another 99 deputies.
“Deputy Sheriff’s are highly trained law enforcement
officers who go through extensive training—much
more than that of a security guard,” said Sheriff
Williams.
“It (hiring) is not a fast or easy process”, he continued. “Candidates must be tested and drawn from civil
service lists. Fortunately, the Nutter administration understands this and has been very cooperative”.
Deputies must also undergo background checks and
pass written exams, physical, agility, and physiological
tests before they can be considered. By State law each
candidate must then pass a 19-week course at Penn
State University to be a certified Deputy. The course includes criminal procedure, marksmanship, and physical
training.
Since February 2013, 58 deputies have been hired
from Civil Service lists. To expedite the process, the
Sheriff’s Office and City have added a hiring list made
up of already certified officers from other Sheriff’s Offices and police departments.

of Freedom Summer volunteers

Michael Schwerner. Our guide was
Leroy Clemons, a longtime local leader
and activist whose family was involved
in the civil rights movement in Neshoba
County and who is prominently featured in the excellent
documentary “Neshoba: The Price of Freedom.”
We both took this journey on June 25 with a group of
about 400 young people, including young women participating in the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF)’s summer
leadership institute for young Black women from rural
Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi, part of CDF’s Southern Rural Black Women’s Institute for Economic and Social Justice. Other young people who were in Jackson,
Mississippi for the 50th anniversary commemoration of
Freedom Summer joined our group too, as did Freedom
Summer organizer and leader Dave Dennis; James
Chaney’s sister, Julia Chaney Moss, now a minister in
Willingboro, New Jersey; and Walt MacDonald and
Michael Nettles from ETS—the Educational Testing
Service.
Our buses were escorted by state troopers. For a split
second, that almost seemed like an honor until we quickly
wondered why we needed a police escort. The site is just
down the road from the families of two of the Ku Klux
Klan members involved in the murders, and as the buses
stopped to see the murder site, riders on some of them
said that pickup trucks rode by, back and forth, in a presumed effort at intimidation.
In a flash it brought back the absolute reign of terror
faced by Black people in Mississippi in those days. We’re
certain all of us gathered at the murder site—we went in
small groups—couldn’t even begin to imagine the terror
the three young men felt that night as Leroy Clemons,
from his study of histories, articles, court records, and his
own interviews with still-living Klan members, told us
what happened.
Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner were stopped and
arrested by Klan member and deputy sheriff Cecil Price
as they drove away after speaking with members of a
Black church that had been torched a few days earlier.
The rebuilt church was our first stop in recreating their
day. The deputy, Cecil Price, and the Klan knew that civil
rights workers had been at the church several times to talk
about having a Freedom School there—especially
Michael Schwerner, who had been working in the area for
some time, and they were looking for him. Chaney, the
driver, was charged with “speeding” while Goodman and
Schwerner were booked for investigation, and all three
were taken to the former jail—a squat non-descript building which was our second stop. After the Klan had time to
gather, Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner were released
around 10 p.m. and told to drive back to Meridian where
they were staying.
As they were driving Price stopped them, the Klan
members drove up, and they took the three young men to
the spot pictured above. They selected this place,
Clemons said, because Edgar Ray “Preacher” Killen, the
ordained Baptist minister and local Ku Klux Klan leader
who was eventually accused of directing the murders,
lived on this road and wanted to see the place they were
killed whenever he came and went. About 20 Klansmen,
drunk and full of “blood lust,” chained James Chaney to a
tree and beat him with chains. When they unchained him,
he fell to the ground, and then they castrated him as
Goodman and Schwerner watched. Then they shot him.
Schwerner came up and cradled Chaney in his arms. A
Klansman asked, “Are you that nigger lover?” and he
said, “Sir, I understand your concern.” And they shot him
in the heart. Andrew Goodman ran and they shot him too.
They then took the bodies to a dam a little further down
the road (private property so we couldn’t go there) where
a tractor had already been deployed to dig the graves. Evidence suggests Andrew Goodman was buried alive. The
bullet hadn’t quite killed him because an autopsy showed
red clay dirt in his lungs and also grasped in his fists from
trying to dig his way out. The next day, Edgar Ray Killen
took all the weapons and bullet casings to the Meridian
Police Department, which destroyed them. The department was made up of Klan members.
We listened in horrified silence. James Chaney’s sister,
who had never been to this place, stood completely still
and stared at the makeshift memorial. Being there made
the brutality vividly real and present. The night before,
some of the veterans of Freedom Summer—Dave Dennis,
Rita Schwerner Bender, Michael’s widow, and a few others—talked to the young people in the audience at a
church rally in Jackson about those surreal and horrendous days in the summer of 1964. The young people also

the events of 1964, the town’s racial complexity in the
present, and the trial in 2005 of Edgar Ray Killen who
was charged with murder but convicted of manslaughter
and is now in protective custody at Parchman Penitentiary
because when he got there he said, “it’s too many niggers
in here,” according to Clemons. In 1967, in a case
brought by the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, seven Klansmen were convicted by a jury
of Mississippi citizens in federal court of conspiracy to
violate Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner’s federally protected civil rights. Eight others were acquitted and the
jury was undecided on two more. None served more than
six years in prison. A half-century later nobody has ever
been convicted of murder in their deaths.
The Freedom Summer veterans on our pilgrimage used
the courage of the three young men and the other young
men and women and local Black citizens who participated
in Freedom Summer to urge today’s young people to pick
up and carry on the movement in this era of racial profiling, stop and frisk, chokeholds, and mass incarceration—
one in three Black boys born in 2001 will grow up to
spend time in prison; voter suppression; inferior education for millions of Black children, 80 percent of whom
do not read or compute on grade level in the 4th and 8th
grades; and epidemic gun violence which is the leading
cause of death among Black youths. Although much
progress has been made, great danger lurks for so many in
our community and the prospects for poor children of
color in Mississippi and across our nation are diminishing. It is time for another transforming movement to
honor the sacrifices of those who went on before us. We
must all finish the job Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and
Septima Clark and Medgar Evers and so many other civil
rights warriors struggled and sacrificed for.
We must make sure that our children and all of us know
our history and that the atrocities that wiped out the lives
of Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner and countless others who died for freedom and justice during the Civil
Rights Movement—including eight other Black men
whose bodies were only found as the FBI dredged Mississippi rivers and swamps searching for these three young
men—do not ever happen again. We must all do our part
to create a safe and hopeful nation for every child.
It is way past time for all adults to step up to the plate
and make sure that the backwards slide for poor children
is stopped and light a fire under ourselves to combat with
all our might the continuing discrimination, dehumaniza-

conflict and war but in relation to order, harmony and
equilibrium, It is a religious value in that the
order, harmony, and equilibrium in the universe
and society is believed to be divinely established
and the obligation to maintain them is religious. It
is also a moral value since good conduct is required of human beings, if the order, harmony and
equilibrium are to be maintained.”

Unlike the nomadic lifestyle and cultures of the
Eurasian Steppes where raiding, pillage, plunder, rape
and warfare were the norm, on the African continent
even among nomadic herding peoples, the concept of
peace was an integral part of their cosmology, philosophy, spiritual practices and daily life. For Africans peace
was both a collective and personal reality. It was thought
the wellbeing of each person and the community as a
whole hinged upon peaceful relations among all participants. The rulers’ primary responsibility whether it was
the Pharaoh, a chief, or group of elders was to ensure and
maintain peace within the community and tribe, specifically to reflect the peace of the universe in temporal
form.
This doesn’t mean there were no conflicts, disagreements, arguments or wars, but what it meant was every
effort had to be made to resolve the issue, reconcile the
various factions and restore the harmony, social order
and balance between the disputants and the community at
large. In a totally communal setting where cooperation
and harmonious relations were at the glue that bonded
the social effectiveness and efficiency of the family, village or tribe, it was essential all disputes be reconciled
and harmony be restored.
This is an ancient notion it goes back thousands of
years to the Nile Valley’s ethical and moral of ideas and
ideals about Ma’at (Divine Order, Truth, Justice, Harmony, Righteousness, Balance, and Cooperation/mutual
aid). For Africans peace was tied to personal and group
health and well being. Indigenous Africans viewed themselves meaning they saw each person as part of a collective experience both in the temporal and metaphysical
sense. Unlike Europeans who are steeped in notions of
individualism and an admitted alienation from nature and
others; for Africans there was no dichotomy no split between the seen world and the unseen intelligence and energy behind all that is seen. To indigenous Africans, it is
all one.
From an African perspective peace was not merely an
idealistic concept, but part of the DIVINE reality embodied in every aspect of the universe seen and unseen.
Africans throughout the continent felt it was their obligation to replicate peace here on earth in themselves and
their surrounding environment. In traditional African
thought, peace is essential to the wellbeing of everyone.
The whole adult community took on the responsibility of
maintaining the peace, health and wellbeing of the village.
“Harmony is a fundamental category in traditional
African religion and thought. No attempt is made to deny
or cancel out differences, rather all effort is devoted to
finding a way in which differences can continue to harmoniously co-exists. In personal life, such a harmony
consists in the ability to reconcile one’s desires with
one’s means, coordinate one’s thoughts, sentiments and
their verbal expressions as well as the ability to discharge
one’s religious and social duties. One who is able to do
this will experience inner peace. In the community, harmony entails smooth relationships between persons and
other beings.
The goal of interaction of beings in African worldviews is the maintenance of the integration and balance
of the beings in it [the world]. Harmonious interaction of
beings leads to the mutual strengthening of the beings involved, and enhances the growth of life. A pernicious influence from one being weakens other beings and
threatens the harmony and integration of the whole.” The

When there was discord or dispute it was the responsibility of the elders or local rulers to resolve it. If there
was no resolution the ill will could fester and lead to
deeper problems within the community, such as illness
and other calamities. Suppressed ill will, resentment,
fear, anger and depression and other negative emotions
necessitated communal intervention by a healer, diviner,
shaman, “medicine man or women” to help restore harmony and balance and clear away the negative emotions
and energy (spirits).
Emotions are a form of energy that we can feel, attune
to or resonate to/with. For example if two people are arguing and shouting and if someone else comes to their
home and they let them in but they try to act like everything is honky-dorey, the person coming into the home or
room can actually feel the anger and emotion even
though the people are pretending everything is copacetic.

The peridot is the stone for the month of August
Peridot is considered by some to be a tonic for the entire
body. It is said to protect the wearer from negativity and to
provide stress reduction and relaxation. Pirates were said to
favor peridot because, when set in gold, it would protect
them from the terrors of the night. The gem known as peridot
is born in fire it is found at the base of volcanoes and is the
only gem known to be found in meteors that fall to the earth.
Peridot is a gem variety of the mineral olivine. Popakoleas,
Green Sand Beach is filled with olivine crystals a result of
Hawaii’s volcanic action. Peridot is said to inspire purification and encourage growth, intuition healing renewal and rebirth. Very large peridots, each more than 200carats in size,
decorate the shrine of the Three Kings at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany.

In February 1921, The Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, President General of the Universal Negro Improvement Association began an ambitious and unprecedented
tour of Cuba, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Panama and Honduras.
The Cuban scholar, Bernardo Garcia Dominguez of Santiago, vividly describes Garvey's visit to Cuba: "Marcus Garvey boarded the S.S. Governor Cobb, property of the
Marcus Garvey
Peninsular and Occidental Steamship, at Key West,
Florida, on Monday, 28 February 1921. The Governor
Cobb sailed at 10:20 P.M. , and entered Havana harbour
the next day, Tuesday, 1 March at 6:30 a.m. The skies of
the Cuban capital were partly covered. Garvey was received at San Francisco dock by the House Representative
for Matanzas Province, Primitivo Ramirez Ros, who was
to accompany him throughout his visit to Havana. Ramirez
assigned his own residence in Centro Havana (San Rafael
281) Garvey, his secretaries and his assistants, who preferred it to a hotel."
There appears to have been considerable mutual respect
between Garvey, the U.N.I.A and Cubans, who joined the
more than 26 branches of this mass organization in cities
all over the country. Recent scholarship suggest the still
underexplored areas of Afrodiasporic networks in the
United States, Cuba, Honduras, Argentina, Nicarauga,
Panama, as well as other areas in Latin America, Central
America, South America and the Caribbean. In order to do
a comprehensive job it requires a polyvalent , multilingual,
multidisciplinary research team using qualitative, quantitative, literary, historical and mixed methods approaches.
African American, Latino, Caribbean, Afropean and
African scholars engaged in cooperative projects will be
greatly rewarded as will scholarship generally. Emphasis
of organizational histories as well as individual ones will
enhance our knowledge of Marcus Mosiah Garvey and
many others.
What is the process through which Cuba became the
country with the largest number of UNIA divisions and
branches outside of the United States? What role did
Cubans play in helping to capitalize the Black Star Line
Shipping company as well as other U.H.I.A. businesses in
New York and Cuba? What is the historical background
to the forging of diasporic networks in the region?Having
heard the testimonies of those who participated in the
African American led business and friendship trips to Cuba
and Haiti in the 1930's and carefully studying the testimonies of those who participated in Garvey's extraordinary
voyages, Of particular interest to those familiar with
Philadelephia's own Mother Ida Robinson's Mt. Sinai
Church movement in Cuba it is necessary to explore the
relationship between Caribbean immigrants, U.N.I. A.
members and Robinson's religious communities in Cuba.
What role did AfroCubans and non AfroCubans play in
these developments? The role did Arturo Schomburg and
his network of expatriate Cuban patriots gathered in New
York City in the 1890's play in the reception Garvey received in Cuba, especially given his 1920 pledge to this
mass movement? What conversations did he and Garvey
have about naming a Black Star Liner in honor of Antonio
Maceo?

Many of our readers have asked us to introduce our organization and leadership. As requested, here is a snapshot in time of what our
organization based in faith and evidence.

OUR MISSION
Pointman Soldiers Heart Ministry (PSHM)
is a tax-exempt Veteran Service Organization
based in faith. PSHM is a search and rescue
resource ministry. We provide spiritual support; assist with acquiring individual and
group benefits for ALL Veterans and their
families. Our mission is to help secure veterans benefits and healthcare for vulnerable veterans using voter education so they may
maintain their dignity and honor as citizens.
GOALS
To provide community outreach services. To provide
individual spiritual counseling, self-help group counseling, and substance abuse counseling to vulnerable veterans. To help veterans find shelter and housing. To
operate a Veteran Stand-down and Outreach Center for
veterans seeking employment/self- employment assistance, and applying for veterans benefits earned for
their in the military. To provide a sacred space where
veterans can come to rest and recuperate from the rigors
of readjusting to society and their families.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
While PSHM has been operating for over 19 years, it
was on January 1, 2009 that a small group of veterans
from all branches of the military and various wars,
WWI to Vietnam, came together to incorporate and receive tax-exempt status as a Veterans Service Organization to provide assistance to fellow veterans with Post
-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). Some problems
that were recognized regardless of time of service, or
war, were racism, policies reinforcing racial discrimination, poor or no medical services for PTSD, high unemployment, no re- entry preparation into society, poor
or no rehabilitative services, hostile social attitudes, and
high exposure to the lethal toxin "Agent Orange."
Our brand/ credo is “Vulnerable Veterans Helping Vulnerable Veterans.” We know that historically, Vulnerable Veterans have never received their just share of
respect from society for defending America in the past,
which includes the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars.
Vulnerable veterans and their families have not had a
sensitive and progressive agency, in the state of Penn-
sylvania, interested in their peculiar grievances and problems until the founding of PSHM. Yet, our organization
helps all in need of help in the context of Veterans Helping Veterans.
Vulnerable Veterans are those veterans from urban
communities who were drafted or enlisted in the armed
forces and will return to those same communities where
homicides, homelessness, suicides, violence, unemployment, behavioral health maladies, mass incarceration,
and domestic violence are liken to war zones. Key identifiers of Vulnerable Veterans are their service connected
wounds of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, traumatic brain injury,
(TBI), and race.

He serves as Executive Minister for Franconia Mennonite
Conference, a position he has
held since 2011, following more
than a decade in the capacity of
Conference Minister. In his Executive role, Whigham serves as
CEO of the conference, working
closely with the Conference
Board, Executive Committee,
connecting with leaders from
Conference Related Ministries,
and giving leadership to conferErtell Whigham ence staff. He continues to serve
as Leadership Minister for several congregations. He also connects across the wider
church in a variety of ways including as a Franconia representative to the Mennonite Church USA Constituency
Leaders Council and as a director of the Mennonite
Health Services Alliance board.
Ertell grew up in Philadelphia, served with the Marines
in the Vietnam War, and connected with Mennonites
when he relocated to Reading as a Marine recruiter. It
was here that he became a pacifist while having a devotion one morning. “I remember walking away from that
and the Lord speaking to me and saying, ‘how can you
tell someone about Jesus and want to take their life?’”
Long committed to bivocational ministry, Whigham
worked as an executive with Ehrlich Pest Control
through most of his pastoral roles at Buttonwood Mennonite Church (Reading) on the pastoral team at Diamond Street Mennonite Church (Phila.) and then Bethel
Mennonite Church in Norristown. It was the vision that
God gave him that resulted in the coming together of
Bethel, First Mennonite, and Fuente de Salvación to form
Nueva Vida/Norristown New Life Mennonite Church, an
intercultural, multilingual congregation.

Vietnam from 1966 to 1968. He retired from the Navy
in 1982 as a Lieutenant Commander in the Health Care
Administration Section of the Medical Service Corps
after nearly 24 years on continuous active duty. Duty
locations included Japan, California, Vietnam, Guam,
District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and
Washington. He has earned various military and civilian awards.
Following his retirement from the military, Larry
spent 24 years working in financial and materials management in various health care and educational institutions, including Larry is also a member of many other
veteran service organizations, including, but not limited to, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars
(VFW), AMVETS, Military Officers Association of
America (MOAA), Fleet Reserve Association (FRA),
Navy League of the US., National Navy Museum, National Navy Memorial, Military Order of the World
Wars (MOWW), Vietnam Era Seabees (VNES), Navy
Seabee Veterans of America (NSVA), Pointman Soldiers Heart Ministry (PSHM), Philadelphia Vietnam
Veterans Memorial Society (PVVMS), etc. Larry currently serves as the Chairman, Government Affairs

golf tournament for a second time.
Full Court Press Records are proud to announce the
first in a series of releases that combine skilled athletes
with skilled MC’s, a unique combination to take hip-hop
to the net. Full Court Press, Vol.1 will be released this
fall, at the start of basketball season. The album will be
released in collaboration with The Cherry Party, a newly
formed record label in joint venture with Sony Music.
Yesterday a behind the scenes look at the making of
the album debuted on Slam Magazine’s site, as did the
first single “I’m A Champion, featuring performances by
T-Pain, Dorrough, Young Cash, and baller Shawn Marion.

Boozer, Glen “Big Baby” Davis, Iman Shumpert and
Maurice Peterson (associated with the legendary basketball cities of Dallas, Chicago, Orlando and New York)

South Philadelphia will come alive with the spirit of
Ghana when the Philadelphia Asante Nation, in association with the Agogo World Wide Association celebrate
The 5th Annual Sankofa Festival, 12 noon - 6:00PM, Saturday, August 9 at 5th & Snyder Avenue. Come sample
check out the vendors, dance to Ghanaian music and fellowship with the tri-state Asante community. The festival is a celebration of the Akan culture in the Delaware
Valley and the African cultural heritage of Africans born
in America, Ghana, Africa and the African Diaspora.
“This year's theme, Go Back and Fetch Your Cultural
Heritage, centers around understanding the need to return
to our ageless true extended family structures that connects our whole village as a cohesive functional spider's
web,” explained Nana Kofi Tuuda, organizer of the
Philadelphia Asante Nation. “The concept of Sankofa is
derived from King Adinkera of the Akan people of West
Africa. Literally translated it means it is not taboo to go
back and fetch what you forgot. Sankofa teaches us that
we must go back to our roots in order to move forward.
That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what
our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full
potential as we move forward. Whatever we have lost,
forgotten or been stripped of, can be reclaimed, revived,
preserved and perpetuated.”

cultural dance and drum performances, the festival will
include Asante cultural dancing, information on reflexology, and how to keep your baby spiritually and physically healthy during gestation.

This year's guest speaker is Odwirafo Kwesi Ra
Nehem Ptah Akhan representing the Akwamu Nation in
North America. The Akwamu are a sub-group of the
Akan ethnic group who live primarily in the West African
countries of Ghana and Ivory Coast. There are over 20
million Akan in Africa and millions of people living in
the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe who are direct
descendants of the Akan. Thousands of Akan were captured as prisoners of war, enslaved and brought to the
United States. Many of us in the U.S. have reclaimed
our African ancestral culture with the help of our ancestors. That is the true meaning of Sankofa.
Nana Tuuda reminds us of the importance of the festival and the concept of Sankofa. “In reality, the concept
speaks to the very essence of the path that all African
people must embrace whether they were born in Africa or
find themselves residing in other parts of the world,” he
said. The work that lies before us is to re-examine and
gain a better understanding of that which we left behind.
Every thought, word and deed embodied in our cultural
practices had a meaning and was directed to improve the
quality of our individual lives and the lives of our families and community. If a practice or custom is not being
properly implemented or it has been polluted due to exposure to ways not of our own, we must rectify this as a
collective if we are to move forward as unified, functionally successful African people.”

Queen Mother of Ejisu, grand-daughter of Nana Yaa Asantewaa I who in 1899, led the war against the British to
regain the Asante’s Golden Stool. Nana Asantewaa II
oversaw the outdooring of the newly-enstooled Queen
Mothers of Philadelphia Nisa Ra and Salamaa Kenyatta.

and was enstooled as Nkabomhene (Unity Chief) of
Agogo in Ghana. He was charged with organizing his
community here in South Philadelphia and bringing the
Akan culture to the people. He has taken his assignment
seriously and has organized the Philadelphia Asante Nation, a community of Asante descendants here in the
Delaware Valley.
The Philadelphia Asante Nation, under the leadership
of Nana Tuuda, is a bridge that reconnects Africans born

with his 5th project appropriately titled
"Evolve". "Evolve"
showcases the evolution of a saxophonist
who continues to explore new musical
worlds in the industry
of smooth jazz.
"Evolve" features
smooth, funky
arrangements on the various tracks Joyner has
pinned. Among the songs is a remake or two plus
some interesting guests have come aboard such as familiar collaborator Keiko Matsui and Gerald Albright. Joyner wrote and produced all the selections
on this set. The musical collection opens with "Generation Next" upbeat, and vibrant in nature the track
sets the tone for what's ahead in this project.
Jackiem's familiar saxophone playing comes clear
on the title track "Evolve" which has a touch of futuristic flair to it along with an element of funk. The
track also features bassist Tim Baily. A bit of rock element is utilized on "Born to Fly". Another great feature is the fact
that most
tracks on the
project were
recorded live
with all musicians playing
in the same

We have the ability to pick up other people’s emotional
energy (vibrations) and it can resonate and impact us.
This same effect happens in our communities.
As a people we carry much anger, pain and resentment
with us for countless reasons: the direct effects and impact of racism, unemployment, low self-esteem and poor
self-image etc. Like the arguing couple cited above all
too often we try to act like everything is cool. Rarely
does the racism stop; but after a while our emotional suppression and acting like things are cool response becomes our norm to the point we think this is the way we
should always be, think and act. This emotional suppression causes both emotional, psychic and physical injury
in us and in our environment. It is called EII emotionally
induced illness or psycho-somatic illness.
If we were to employ traditional African healing
methods, a shaman or medicine men and women would
attempt to resolve and heal us by attempting to discern
the cause of the emotional imbalance. Is it because we
did something to upset the ancestors, did we violate a
cultural norm or are we holding ill will towards someone
in the community or ill will towards ourselves?
The diviners, shaman medicine man work collectively
with the one who is ill as well as their family and community because they know illness is not just personal; it
is collective (social) just as wellbeing is both personal
and collective. They talk with the person, family members and others. If talking with the person doesn’t work,
they employ rituals, trance and divination to get at the
root of the problem. If the problem is due to ill will and
enmity the shaman first discerns who are the parties involved then encourages reconciliation and reparations. If
the sources is spiritual, the shaman or medicine
man/woman creates a potion, uses herbs or a sacrifice to
restore the harmony and balance on behalf of the person
and the community.
Because African societies are based upon mutual aid,
responsibility and cooperation, peace, harmony openness
and transparency are essential. Healing requires openness
and honesty, that’s why hidden animosities and ill will
are considered evil and anti-social. Western anthropologists deliberately reinterpreted what the Africans told
them about their philosophy and culture as “witchcraft”
and “sorcery”. With their typical arrogance Westerners
denigrated and distorted the true essence of African healers and healing because the West knows very little about
spirituality and metaphysics.
We can learn a lot from our African ancestors about
peace and the role it plays in health, wellness and wellbeing. Much of the disease and illness in our communities
is rooted in spiritual imbalance, negative ideation and
emotions such as anger and depression. Just being in a
Western culture which at its core is the antithesis of traditional African culture is stressful and harmful for all of us
no matter what our socio-economic standing and consciousness.
We are energetic and spiritual as well as physical beings; so at our core peace, harmony and balance are essential for our health and wellbeing. Living in a
materialistic, aspiritual, insanely competitive, violent and
anti-life culture is harmful to our health! Even though
whites no longer lynch and beat us for fun and sport, this
culture is still oppressive. Even with the election of a non
threatening bi-racial quisling who obediently executes
the program of the ruling oligarchs, this culture remains
essentially anti-African. This reality wears on us, on our
psyches, our spirit and our consciousness. The fact we
have been conditioned to try to be other than what we are
is driving us insane.
To heal we need to embrace and turn to African traditional healing practices because we are all in this together. Our health is a collective and social issue.
“Traditional African healing is a holistic approach to
medicine based on the premise of interconnectedness.
Disease is understood to be a misalignment or
spiritual/social disorder either internal or external. It is
believed that all people are made up of many levels of
being which function together as a whole; moral, social,
physical and spiritual, and if any of these parts are out of
balance, the person will become physically ill (dis-eased)
or suffer spiritually. Using myriad forms of diagnosis
such as questioning, observation and touching (still used
today in western methods) as well as divination and
dream interpretation to name a few...it is the role of the
physician to re-align the patient with the origin of the influences so as to re-balance the disorder (dis-order).
Forms of treatment include but are not limited to; surgery, dietary therapy, herbalism, psychotherapy, aromatherapy, exorcism, rituals and sacrifice. African
healing is influenced by natural cycles of days, seasons
and natural occurrences and the accepted realities of the
physician. African culture acknowledges that real healing
lies, not in a synthetic pill but in recognition of our true
position on the earth and in bringing our actions into respectful balance with the natural world.” Traditional

One way we can promote good health and wellness is
to seek peace, do the inner work to make peace real in
our personal lives and make peace an integral part of our
lifestyle even in the midst of a decadent and violent society such as this.

brought the Ol’ Skool R&B
to The First District Plaza
with a live concert with Evelyn "Champagne" King and
UGO – Urban Guerilla Orchestra.
At age 15, Evelyn's big
break came in storybook fashion. Legend has it she was
working, subbing for her sister as a cleaning woman at
Philadelphia's Sigma Studios, and singing "A Change Is
Gonna Come." Philadelphia’s very own and my good
friend Soul producer T. (Theodore) Life, a former member of the band Instant Funk, heard her singing. He took
her to RCA, signed her to a contract, and produced her
first album Smooth Talk. The album included the disco
smash "Shame." She had hits over the years and some
might remember the Get Loose album in 1982 and another smash, the classic anthem "Love Come Down."
Today Evelyn continues to tour and please her fans
around the world and is back in the studio to release yet
another fan pleasing record.
While in town Evelyn "Champagne" King took a tour
and visited all her familiar hot spots and was introduced
to a new restaurant “Shelly’s.” Publicist/Sadina Davis
set up non stop interviews on radio and TV with Patty
Jackson WDAS, Renee Chenault Fattah, NBC 10 and so
many more.
The event was a huge success and the crowd partied
and enjoyed the Ol’ Skool Flow. For over 5 years Ol’
Skool Entertainment continues to strive to be the leading
entertainment and special events provider in the Tri-State

Havana, in front of Marti Theater ... Garvey spoke at the
same place the second night and again had a large audience
that responded with enthusiasm. The papers described Garvey's public presentations in detail, considering them a display of high eloquence, and noted his red, black and green
robe / While Garvey spoke , his secretaries sold bonds of
the Black Star Line and of other Garvey enterprises. The
meeting began with Cuba's national anthem, then Congressman Ramirez Ros presented Garvey with a speech in
Spanish that was translated into English. He also gave Garvey a Cuban flag'' for the Antonio Maceo in honor of the
exceptional Cuban black general and National lHeroof
Cuba whose glorious mother Marianna Grajales had died
in exile in Jamaica.'

Ex-President of Club Atenas Pablo Herrera was among
those who welcomed Garvey to Havana and was present
when Mr. Garvey spoke before this august body.comprised
of le creme de la creme of Cuban society Dr. Miguel
Angel Cespedes was the President of Club Atenas when
Marcus Garvey addressed the society.. Recent scholarship
causes us to more closely read the implications Garvey addressing this elite society of colored Cubans and it causes
one to reconsider even the news accounts covering this
Garvey speech event. One has to return tol the Negro
World (Spanish, French and English editions) newspaper
and Cuban media from that time before drawing conclusions. One scholar states, "On at least one occasion the
association attempted to confront directly the discriminatory practices faced by black Cubans; in 1924 member of
the Camaguey division marched from their Liberty Halal
to Agramonte Park 'where no Negroes are allowed to enter'
and delivered public addresses in both English and Spanish. Through such efforts, Garveyites in Cuba seemed to
be attracting followers from the Cuban population over
the course of the 1920s."

Marcus Garvey Meets With
Cuban President Mario Garcia Menocal
Marcus Garvey's Cosmopolitan Journey led to a special
meeting with Cuba's President Mario Garcia Menocal.
Menocal, was described in The Cornell Daily Sun as 'admirably suited to the responsibility he assumes today,
which is no less than the saving of Cuba from herself."
Menocal's tenure was marked by a number of challenges.
When the President received Marcus Garvey, Dominguez
notes it 'seems to have been a formal but cordial conversation, he was introduced to Alfredo Zayas , the presidential
candidate for Menocal's party, who would win the 1 and
26 March elections...Almost exactly one year before , the
Yarmouth [Black Star Line ship], unofficially renamed the
Frederick Douglass,, had received an enthusiastic welcome
to Havana, having arrived safely with a cargo of $5 million
worth of whiskey. President Menocal had given a banquet
to the captain and crew and had offered the support of the
Black Star Line. " Meanwhile back in the USA efforts
were afoot to destroy the Black Star Line.
Is it any wonder that Marcus Garvey recalled his trip to
Viva la Republica de Cuba!

attended that thing, U.N.I.A. There were many Anglophones in Buenavista at the time and all the British subjects
went there, and I went with my mother to the association
whenever there was something. I learned all that here in

Mayor of Girard Avenue,
Toby Rich is about “A
Good Neighbor Policy” I
say all of that to mean that
on Friday, July 25, many of
the recovery participants
from the Goldman Clinic at
8th and Girard got involved
in a community clean up. The idea was to show
that the folks that are a part of Goldman clinic do
like being good neighbors. Maybe for a while it had
seemed that some of the people at Goldman were not
showing a caring attitude about the community. The Director, Mr. Ronald Pope, Mr. Steven Mack, Dr. Mills,
many other staff members and many recovering participants wanted to rectify that perception -- if at all possible.
Now we all know that it can be hard to change a person’s mind set if you don’t put out the right effort. The
folks at Goldman knew that they did not have an easy job
ahead, however it is surely worth the try because this is a
loving and caring community. One of the people who
help make it that was is Mr. Reginald Cintron, who is a
peer specialist
at the Goldman
clinic. He is
able to talk with
and interact
with the recovery participants
to provide help
and support in
their recovery.
He also motivates and will
encourage participants to get
involved more
with their recovery, which
helps people to
get better with
life and living
skills. He also
helps to facilitate the 12 step
groups and also
provides resources like job
housing,

At the end of the day Mr. Pope thanked all of the
people that took part in the clean up just to let them know

work together, if only because many of the people that
come to Goldman for help are people that for the most
part live in this North Philadelphia community or have
family members that live in this community so in all we
are only helping our own family members.
If you want to look at the bigger picture we are helping our family of human kind. Should we just turn our
backs on one another when we all know that we can provide the help that is needed to help this person become
the best person that he or she can be? I don’t mean to
sound corny and I know that today it is not too popular to
want to help people. Folks feel today that the time of
helping is over you have to get up and get it on your
own. That is good for the person that knows how to do
that. What about people that don’t? Does that mean that
we just let the people that don’t know how to get themselves together fall by the waste side?
What happened to the good old fashioned loving and
caring people? As a society we don’t care about people
any more. Oh I know we don’t want to become a bleed-

ing heart but remember if it were not for those good ole
bleeding hearts some folks would not have gotten the
right to vote -- including women. It seems that we have
gotten amnesia when it comes to caring about people,
however we don’t have to stay this way. At the same time
we do not have to put up with irresponsible behavior.
Folks must do the things that they know are right
and we all know right from wrong. That is one of the
platforms that Mr. Pope and all of the staff at the Goldman clinic are trying to keep established. One way to do
this is to stay in touch with the community so that the
community will never feel that having a clinic in their
community is a bad idea. Folks must always feel that the
Goldman clinic does nothing but offer help to the sick
and suffering addict. With love, honor and respect from

“What is the FICA, and why is my
paycheck less because of it?” Generally, employers are required to withhold Social Security and Medicare tax from a worker’s
paycheck. Your employer matches the amounts you pay
in Social Security and Medicare taxes. Usually the
money we withhold is referred to as “Social Security
taxes” on the employee’s payroll statement. Sometimes
the deduction is labeled as “FICA taxes,” which stands
for Federal Insurance Contributions Act, and sometimes OASDI, or Old Age Survivor and Disability Insurance. Name aside, what’s important is how that
money is being used, and what’s in it for you down the
road. The taxes you pay now translate to a lifetime of
protection, when you eventually retire or if you become
disabled. If you die, your dependent children and
spouse may be able to receive survivors benefits based
on your work. Today you probably have family members — grandparents, for example — who already
enjoy Social Security benefits that your Social Security
taxes help provide.
You may be a long way from retirement now, so you
may find it hard to appreciate the value of benefits that
could be 40 or 50 years away. But consider that your
Social Security taxes could pay off sooner than you
think. Social Security provides valuable disability benefits — and studies show that a 20-year-old has about a

Come unto me, all ye
that labor and are heavy
laden and I will give your
rest. Take my yoke upon
you, and learn of me; for
I am meek and lowly in
heart: and ye shall find
rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden
is light. “Come unto me.” What a beautiful
invitation for people living in a suffering burdened world. A world, marked by indifference and rejection where outstretched hands
find little response and pleading cries go
unanswered.
The words are simple and the meaning is
unmistakable. Anyone who struggles with
problems or difficulties and seeks relief is
urged to come to Jesus. For you see, God does not remain at a distance. He, who is high above us, as Lord
of all, is also with us, as our Loving Father and Gracious Savior. He came to us in His Son, Jesus Christ,
to reveal Himself as the God of deliverance.
He does not intend that our struggles continue indefinitely, surely not eternally. Burdens will be lifted and
ordeals will be terminated. Gathered round his word
and seated at His table, we hear His voice, feel his
presence, and experience His grace. How wonderful to
commune with God and how amazing that such communion is even possible. Yes, Jesus opened the way
and He continues to say: “Come unto me!”
You see, to Jesus the great need of humanity and the
world was apparent. This 11th Chapter of Matthew,
underscores, John the Baptist’s doubt concerning Jesus
Messiahship, the fickle and critical attitude of the multitude toward His message and the persistent impenitence of those cities, where Jesus had performed most
of His mighty works.
Now, confronted with these reactions to His ministry
would Jesus have been justified in bidding farewell
and leaving men to the consequences of their own attitudes and actions?
When men doubt the message, why continue to proclaim it? When men refuse salvation, why continue to

But Jesus came on a mission of mercy. He remained
sensitive to the needs of those who are lost and persisted in His efforts to save. This was His Father’s
will. So, as He did before, He raised His voice in a
pleading invitation, “Come unto me”.
For He understand us better than we understand ourselves. Picture if you will, for a moment, the world in
which Jesus lived – the donkey with a heavy load on
its back, the camel transporting an even greater cargo
and people weighted with yokes on their shoulders or
carrying vessels and baskets on their heads. What a
life of stress and strain!
Then everywhere Jesus saw the deaf, the blind, the
lame the leprous, the poor and the oppressed. But the
greatest burdens of all were those weighting on hearts
and minds: Questions people could not answer, problems they could not solve, conditions they could not
change and hearts they could not heal. Yes, the Lord
of Life had come into a dying world!
But Jesus could never remain indifferent, because
the heart of God is not cold and hard. He was moved
with infinite compassion, and as the great physician,
He healed all manner of diseases. He performed deeds
of might and mercy and miracles of grace, He provided
blessed relief and signified that He came to deal with
the underlying cause – to lift the burden of sin. He was
God’s answer to a universal need. For He is the sinner’s only hope to salvation.
Now, this throbbing invitation, “Come unto me.” is
accompanied with the thrilling promise, “I will give
your rest.” For all who turned to Jesus realizing and
confessing their need, will find in Him what hey can
find “nowhere” else. Only the Son of God can give
peace and satisfaction. Rescue from sin is beyond
human power; all our efforts are bound to fail.
And with Joy, I want you to know, that the serenity
Jesus graciously provides need not be earned. In fact it
can’t be earned or bought. For it is not based on merit,
but is a gift of Grace.
Notice Jesus says, “I will give you rest.” If this is
so, why then are we still troubled and ill at ease? We
should know the answer. We should know it from
God’s word and from our own conscience. Though
saved, we are still imperfect. We are inconsistent,

What then shall we do? We should look to God for
grace, strength, and encouragement. We should find

Then the gracious invitation and promise of Jesus are
accompanied by an enlightening injunction, “Take my
yoke upon you and learn of me … and you shall find
rest unto your souls…” The rest, which Jesus gives,
grows day by day and we grow in appreciation of its
blessedness.
You might say that you wish that were true, in your
case? And you are not alone, in feeling that way. That
is why Jesus gives enlightening instruction; he points
the way to greater tranquility.
You see to take His yoke, means to submit to His
guidance and authority. It means to let Him choose the
way and to follow Him in it. We receive rest, by faith
and enter more fully into it by obedience. We grow in
assurance and comfort, when we recognize and honor
our Savior as the Lord of our lives.
Now I know that seems difficult and it is. But when
we learn how gentle and humble our Savor is, when we
realize that He is meek and lowly in heart, when we
start to really appreciate, the greatness of His love, experiencing His gentle care and being influenced by His
perfect example, His yoke becomes easy. Duty becomes desire and willing follow-ship becomes joyful
fellowship.
And I want you to know as the songwriter wrote: I
came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad, but I
found in Him, a resting place, and He has made me
glad!

A new study suggests that
potential help in lowering
high blood pressure might
be as close as your refrigerator.
The study found that regular intake of probiotics,
such as those found in certain yogurts or supplements,
may help ease the condition.
Researchers looked at
data from nine studies that examined links between probiotics and blood pressure. The studies
involved a total of 543 adults with either normal or elevated blood pressure.
People who consumed probiotics had an average reduction in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a
reading) of about 3.6 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg)
and an average reduction in diastolic blood pressure
(the bottom number) of about 2.4 mm Hg, compared to
those who did not consume probiotics.
Probiotics benefits seemed greatest among people
with elevated blood pressure (higher than 130/85), and
probiotics with multiple types of bacteria lowered
blood pressure more than those with a single type of
bacteria, the researchers reported.
The study was published July 21 in the journal Hypertension.
Duration of intake seemed key people who consumed
Probiotics for less than two months did not see reductions in blood pressure readings, the study authors
noted.
Still, "the small collection of studies we looked at
suggest regular consumption of probiotics can be part
of a healthy lifestyle to help reduce high blood pressure, as well as maintain healthy blood pressure levels,"
lead author Jing Sun, of Griffith University in Australia,
said in a journal news release.
"This includes probiotics in yogurt, fermented and
sour milk and cheese, and probiotic supplements," she

The study could only point to an association between
increased probiotic intake and lower blood pressure
readings, it could not prove cause and effect. And the
study authors stressed that further research is needed
before doctors can advise patients to take probiotics to
lower their blood pressure.
Experts agreed that more research is needed.
"The degree of blood pressure-lowering was modest," noted Dr. Merle Myerson, of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention of Mount Sinai
Roosevelt and St. Luke's in New York City.
And she added that the study had limitations, because
"the amount of probiotic consumed varied from study
to study," and other perhaps beneficial items in the participants' diets weren't always uniformly measured.
However, "despite these limitations, the results are
useful in suggesting where further research should be
directed," Myerson said.
Dr. Bruce Rutkin is a cardiologist at North Shore
University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y. He said that
"prior studies have demonstrated that probiotics and
their products may favorably impact blood pressure
through a variety of mechanisms." Those include a lowering of blood levels of LDL "bad" cholesterol and
helping to control blood sugar and reduce insulin resistance a key player in diabetes.
Rutkin agreed with Myerson that the reduction in
blood pressure tied to probiotic products was "modest,"
but he believes that "in conjunction with a heart-healthy
lifestyle, they may play a role in modifying cardiovascular risk."
