First grader Kaed Baker in Mrs. Stein's class dressed as a principal and wants to be just like Mr. March! A special thanks to Dave Weikert for helping to organize the high school staff family movie night earlier this month. Mount Wolf Cafeteria takes Halloween costumes to a new level! Too cute!! Miss Loughman's kindergarten students enjoyed a play performed by Mrs. Wilson's 1st graders! Friday, October 23, was senior Alston Belford's last day helping out in the Cafeteria. His coworkers hosted a party for him to express their appreciation for his hard work, skill, and positive attitude. It was truly a win-win situation. Alston was caught off guard and pleasantly surprised by the party. Alston is the young man wearing the blue Penn State sweatshirt. The high school orchestra has a new performance called "Sweets and Sounds" on November 3 at 7 PM in the High School Cafeteria. There will be a 30 minute performance and art displays followed by coffee, hot chocolate, and cider with lots of desserts. Please come out for a great night of music and food. NMS celebrated the first of Rachel’s 5 Challenges, “Choose Positive Influences” this month. Rachel’s Challenge of the month for October fits well with National Red Ribbon Week, the national campaign to raise awareness of living a healthy, substance-free lifestyle. NMS hosted Lanny Poffo, motivational speaker and former WWF Wrestler on 10/28 who shared his poetry and drug-free message. NMS students and staff also participated in Red Ribbon Spirit Dress Days, submitted photos of themselves engaged in positive activities that promote a healthy lifestyle, and participated in a door decorating contest with a positive influences theme. Congratulations to the winners of the Positive Influences door decorating contest: Mr. Graham, Mrs. Gerber and Miss Wilt’s SSR classes!! Middle School celebrates those who choose “natural highs”. Above are some examples of the posters hanging in the hallways of our Middle School. Students at SFI enjoyed Red Ribbon Week by celebrating their choice to take the pledge to be drug free with fun spirit days. On Wednesday, students showed they were too bright to do drugs by wearing neon. On Thursday, students planned for their future by dressing up to show what they want to be when they grow up. On Friday, students wore red to show their commitment to a drug free America. Mr. A recognizes Makenzie Boyd for her care and compassion for others as demonstrated by her most recent birthday project (her own birthday that is). Makenzie decided a few weeks before her birthday that she wanted to do something "off the charts" for her birthday. She wanted it to be special but could not think of an idea. Her mother went through their coat closet and found last years winter coats and asked the kids to try them on. That is where the idea was born. They posted on Facebook, instagram, called family and friends, and eventually they got 51 coats and delivered them to the York Rescue Mission on Friday 10/16. She still has people giving her coats and they plan to make a second delivery soon. She even made the front page of the Saturday newspaper! In Mrs. Martzall's third grade class at York Haven Elementary, we weighed, measured circumference and diameter, counts pumpkin seeds, and checked a pumpkins buoyancy as a fun math activity this week. The students had to work together to put seeds I to groups of 10 and multiply the number of groups rather than counting each seed individually. It was a great learning activity that was hands on and festive! Happy Halloween! Miss Loughman (kindergarten) and Miss Myers (Grade 3) joined their classes for a Halloween poem and partner flashlight reading! On Saturday, October 24 SFI Bobcats on the Run took part in the Haunted House 5K. Go, Cats, go! The Mt. Wolf PTO hosted a fall Book Fair this month. Teachers were encouraged to participate by decorating their classroom doors in the "Friendly Monster" theme. At our Fall Festival, families voted for their favorite door, and that classroom won $100.00 in scholastic books. Congratulations to Mrs. Irwin's class on their win! Senior Rachel Martin serves as a guest page in the House chamber with PA State Representative Keith Gillespie. Brandon Arentz (senior) was awarded the Scholar Athlete of the week. Team Taiven bracelets are available. Order form is on our website. The picture attached shows The Northeastern Little League ZVAA Bobcats 8-9B dedicating their first playoff win to #teamtaiven! Kennedy Payne and Marissa Pritchett both medaled in the Haunted House 5K. Kennedy won the 11-14 bracket and Marissa was the 2nd place female overall. Both girls are 6th graders at SFI. The teachers polished some teaching skills as well as learned new ideas to help us better teach our students. Mt. Wolf Elementary School celebrated Halloween with our annual Fall Festival. Students and families decorated treat bags and pumpkins, heard scary stories, played fun games, experienced a creepy "touch museum," and danced the evening away! Many thanks to the PTO members, parent volunteers, and school staff who helped make the evening a success! York Haven , READ! The staff at OM BO , ZZ FI is ar ye Our AR theme this . entists for Halloween dress up like mad sci decided to get in the spirit and Mrs. Danes and Mr. Prebula's Spring Forge homerooms celebrated the last day of the first marking period with a special reading reward. The students earned the recognition by reading nearly 150 books during the first marking period. To celebrate their achievements, they brought a pillow and blanket to school and had the opportunity to snuggle up in a cozy corner of the classroom to get lost in a good book. Students at York Haven helped to make history on Thursday, October 22nd! They participated in an attempt to set the world record for the largest amount of people reading the same book on the same day, sponsored by the Jumpstart organization. Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® is a global campaign which generates public support for high-quality early learning by mobilizing millions of children and adults to take part in the world's largest shared reading experience. The campaign focuses on closing the “word gap” – a gap that often exists because many children from low-income families hear up to 30 million fewer words than their more affluent peers by the time they enter kindergarten. Students from Mrs. Nase’s kindergarten class are pictured listening to the campaign book, Not Norman: A Goldfish Story by Kelly Bennett. We are still waiting to hear if the record was broken.
