August 26, 2014 | Volume 2014 | 9th Edition Alpha Coming in September One of the most difficult testaments of faith is financial support of the Church. In our hearts we know that God provides everything and we tell Him we are so very grateful. And in our heads we know that we are called to give 10% back to His church, but here is where the disconnect happens. Our freewill often puts us at odds with our calling to tithe. Our fear gets in the way of our faith. And our materialistic desires take control of our lives. Martin Luther describes it this way, “People go through 3 conversions: The conversion of their head, their heart, and their pocketbook -- unfortunately, not all at the same time.” Here at FUMC-CV, we spend one month each year urging that EVERYONE practice the spiritual discipline of tithing. One month of being in prayer about your financial support of the Church. One month of transitioning away from materialism and towards spiritualism. One month of putting God first in your life. Please make September the month that you step out in faith and take a step – or a leap – forward in your giving. Children’s Ministry Upcoming Dates Saturday, October 11th Spanish Ministry Taco Fundraiser Come celebrate the 11th anniversary of our Spanish Ministry on Sunday, September 14th at a Taco Fundraiser on the quad after each service (taco plate $7.50) 3:30– 5:30 pm 6 Let’s face it, many people struggle with the BIG questions about Christianity. We might even find ourselves vulnerable because we cannot shake the feeling that there is something more to life. Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life. The Alpha course covers the basics of Christianity. It answers many of the BIG questions that we struggle with like: “Who is Jesus?” and “Why did he die?” The course lasts 10 weeks, with a one-day weekend getaway in the middle. Each week participants gather for about two hours. We share an informal meal, listen to a talk that acts as a springboard for discussion on how Christianity approaches the topic for the night, then we gather into small groups. The course will be held on Sundays and childcare is available. Alpha Kickoff Dinner “Is There More to Life than This?” 4:30pm Sunday, September 7th in the Fellowship Hall. The course will begin on September 14th. "Disciple Bible Study Classes Starting this Fall! Mondays, starting the week of September 8th, 2014. The Disciple Bible Study Program is designed to develop strong Christian local churches through the in-depth study of Scripture. Through DISCIPLE, persons are strengthened in their faith and guided into service and ministry. Strong, biblically nourished leadership will help our church grow in vitality and Christian discipleship. Disciple I: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study ~ This study is divided between Old and New Testaments and takes participants from Genesis through Revelation prompting them along the way to consider their human condition and become Disciples of Christ. (34 weeks) Disciple II: Into the World ~ This study offers a deeper examination of Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts, emphasizing the rhythm of coming to God and going for God...approaching all experiences. All classes are $40 per participant. You have seen a couple of Pathway articles discussing estate planning recently and we hope they have called you to start taking action with regard to your own estate plan. As you do this, we would ask you to prayerfully consider including Chula Vista FUMC in your plans. Gifts received by the church are managed by the Trustees and the Permanent Endowment Committee, depending on the type of gift, in accordance with the member’s instructions. Today we have approximately $700,000 of endowed gifts that provide income to the church on an annual basis. Recently you heard about nearly $27,000 in scholarships that were awarded to students at our church. Those funds come from several of the church’s Permanent Endowment Funds. This year there was an additional $8,000 of income from other Permanent Endowment Funds that were used for church maintenance and local missions. Next month you will receive a letter with additional information about estate planning and a response card asking you to let us know if you have included FUMC.CV in your estate plan. If you have, we would like to invite you to join us at a thank you dinner on November 7th. If you are interested in learning more about estate planning, check out the California-Pacific United Methodist Foundation website at http://cpumfgift.org, or contact Karl Bunker, chair of the Permanent Endowment Committee, at 619-426-3817 or [email protected]. Saturday, Sept. 20 Sunday Scriptures in September Sept. 7 -- Exodus 17:8-13; 2 Timothy 3:14-4:2; Luke 18:1-8 Sept. 14 -- Exodus 40:34-38; Matthew 25:14-30 Sept. 21 -- Exodus 16:2-15; Matthew 20:1-16 Sept. 28 -- Exodus 17:1-7; Philippians 2:1-13 Each year in the fall we take a few weeks to focus our attention on Stewardship of Financial Matters. There are few issues Jesus talked more about in the New Testament than money -- not because it is inherently evil but because it regularly proves to be a stumbling block for many people, in Jesus' day and in our day. Money is actually a tremendous blessing, money is good, money is helpful, money is to be loved.....just not more than we love God. This year we will again take these weeks to focus our lives around Financial Stewardship and will do so with the help of Rev. Michael Slaughter, Pastor of Ginghamsburg UMC in Tipp City, Ohio. Pastor Mike wrote a great little book called “shiny gods” and our preachers will be drawing from this resource. In addition there is a companion devotional called “first: putting GOD first in living and giving”, that will be made available to all in the church and there will be numerous classes throughout the month of October that are using associated curriculum. Don't let the subject scare you away -- we will not be asking you each week to sell everything and give all the proceeds to the church -we will be asking you to grow deeper in your relationship with God and consider what role money plays in this most important relationship of your life. Adult Discipleship Classroom Open House The Adult Discipleship Team invites you to an Open House on Sept 14. Come see what your support of Rubio's fundraisers have accomplished. Room 212 (Matthew), 214 (Mark) & 216 (Luke) will be open from 9-11:30 am. Our appreciation to Jessica Kolar for the Scripture on the walls. 2 9am—3pm Please mark your fall calendars for Saturday, September 20, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. when we will spend a few hours together and have a wonderful opportunity to grow in our faith as we become acquainted with each other as sisters in Christ. We will spend time talking because women love to talk. Our focus for the day will be on being ready to receive God’s power. Our time will be given to praise, worship, table talk and our speaker, Rev. Mary Lou Flesh. We will think and talk about ourselves and our relationship with God and with each other. You will be blessed as you leave and empowered with a new seed to plant in God’s garden.
