Malinois in Mondioring
Mondioring is an F.C.I.authorized international
protection sport
developed in the late
1980s by
representatives from
every major country
with a protection sport.
This new dog sport was
designed to "level the playing ground" and allow
competitors from any of the world’s disciplines to
compete in a common dog sport. French Ring,
Belgian Ring, Schutzhund and KNPV all were
represented. The result is a dog sport that
combines the best of all of these sports:
Mondioring.
Like most protection sports, Mondioring has a
series of exercises to be executed by the
dog/handler team in the categories of obedience,
agility (jumps) and protection. At the Mondioring III
level, there are a total of 17 exercises, completed
without interruption, and lasting approximately 45
minutes.
Each trial (competition) is based
in a theme – much like a theatre
set up on a field. Props,
scenarios, distractions are
placed at strategic points on the
trial field. While the exercises
remain the same from trial to
trial, the order and the field setup
will change with each judge’s
own creativity. This enables the
judge to observe the dog’s work
character independent of the
handler’s assistance.

High Mesa Malinois
High Mesa provides its members with a network of
trainers and professionals who provide a valuable
source of information and support. Through our
membership we seek to provide activities that
promote the temperament, health, agility, and spirit
of not only the Belgian Malinois, but all working
dogs.
High Mesa Malinois is a local area club in
association with the American Working Malinois
Association (AWMA) and the United States
Mondioring Association (USMRA). Both are part
of the American Working Dog Federation (AWDF),
formed to preserve and protect our working
breeds.

Our members train with various dog clubs and
associations in the area of New Mexico and
Southern Colorado and include online members
from around North America. We have joined
together to share our dedication and love for the
Belgian Malinois in show, work, service, and
sport.
These include many activities in which the
Malinois excels: Schutzhund, Mondioring, French
Ring, Agility and even flyball and dock diving. In
work we promote the use of Malinois as dedicated
partners in many jobs including SAR, Scent
Detection, Guide, Hearing, and Police K-9.

Malinois in Schutzhund
The Belgian Malinois is quick
in mind and body enabling
him to excel in a variety of
different disciplines. The
traits that make this breed
successful in sports such as
Schutzhund and Mondioring
also make for success in
many other arenas. Some of
our members specialize in a
single sport or work, but
many are cross training across various disciplines.
Schutzhund is a competitive three-phase sport in
which dogs and handlers use skills for obedience,
tracking, and protection. Originally designed as a
breed test for the German Shepherd Dogs to breed
for police and military work, it has become a popular
sport for many working breeds. Though the Belgian
Malinois has a long tradition in the Ring sports, the
breed has also become very competitive in
Schutzhund.
Schutzhund is intended to demonstrate the dog's
intelligence and utility. As a working trial,
Schutzhund measures the dog's mental stability,
endurance, structural efficiencies, ability to scent,
willingness to work, courage, and trainability.
The Schutzhund sport has
various oversight
organizations in the U.S.
including USA and DVG.
The AWMA is a FCI
member club and
therefore follows the rules
of the FCI International
IPO program.

Malinois at Work
The Malinois has become a popular choice for
law enforcement–excelling at patrol work,
narcotics and explosives detection. The Malinois
has been bred to do a job, and do it well.
Important work is being done with Malinois in a
variety of search jobs including both Urban and
Wilderness search and rescue, trailing, and
cadaver.
Though the Malinois is a very
active breed, he is also
sensitive to the needs of his
human partner which can
make this breed an excellent
service or guide dog. A keen
awareness of their
surroundings enables the Malinois to act as
hearing ear dogs. With their playful and creative
personality they can make excellent therapy dogs
too.
3
Malinois Versatility
The AWMA is focusing on the
development and implementation
of the Malinois in accordance with
the FCI standard. In general
appearance the Malinois is a
sturdy, well-proportioned, medium
size square dog. The color ranges
from light fawn to a deep rich red
or mahogany. Generally the
Belgian Malinois has a black mask
up to and including the eye area,
the ears are black and the tip of the
tail is almost always black. The
coat is short, dense, and durable.
Perfected to gather,
drive, and protect
flocks, the Malinois
and other shepherds
of the 1800's
developed skills
unique to their
country of origin.
The Malinois was developed for endurance and
has a natural tendency to be in motion,
is enthusiastic and remarkably quick, and can still
be found working and competing in herding.
The modern Malinois
compete successfully in many sports. They
compete in agility, weight pulling, lure coursing,
and some even dabble as bird dogs! They can be
found eagerly winning with teams in flyball and
breaking records in dock diving. They are truly
one of the most versatile of the breeds.
