Who wouldn’t leave his 99 sheep to find the single one lost? I suspect not after some hard calculations about the possibility of losing even more. God, it seems, doesn’t do those calculations. His love is resolute and determined to prevail. Which is good news for when we feel lost. We can rely on not merely the passive presence of God but also a searching one. Communities and countries can feel as lost as individuals and especially in times of disaster and threat. In times like these we can lose far more than our faith. But those are precisely the times for us to remember who we are and just how much God loves us and the world we live in. Those are precisely the times to, like the woman in the second parable, sweep out the house of our souls and do some searching ourselves for what is most important. As we think about a terrible morning 15 years ago when the worst kind of hatred perpetrated the worst kind of violence on an unprecedented scale perhaps we are called again to stop and take a breath and see if we cannot feel God’s presence leading us again in another direction. A terrible anniversary can become a strange blessing. In such times we can reclaim a vision of the same resolute and searching love with which we are gifted. With such a vision we can contradict the brokenness of the world with a radical and hope by living out precisely what we claim to believe. See you on Sunday! Blessings! Jamie+ The Rev. James B. PAUL’S CHAPEL ST. PAUL’S CHAPEL For nearly a year after the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, St. Paul’s Chapel served as a relief mission for recovery workers at Ground Zero. Over 14,000 volunteers worked in 12 hour shifts to provide solace, comfort and care for 2,000 workers each day. St. Paul’s Chapel became the spiritual home of Ground Zero. It stood. Not a window was broken. Not a stone dislodged. It stood when nothing else did. It stood when terrorists brought September down. It stood among myths. It stood among ruins. To stand was its purpose, long lines prove that. It stands, and around it now, a shrine of letters, poems, acrostics, litter of the heart. It is the standing people want: to grieve, serve and tend , celebrate the lasting stone of St. Paul’s church. And deep into its thick breath, the largest banner fittingly from Oklahoma climbs heavenward With hands as stars, hands as stripes, hands as a flag; For many, it was the and a rescuer reaches for a stuffed toy first time they had ever volunteered, and to collect a touch; and George Washington’s pew doesn’t go unused. they discovered that one individual’s could indeed make a difference. The poet Chester Johnson was one of the many who came to St. Paul’s offering his help to those who needed hope and healing. Like many who volunteered their time, he discovered what he took away from this place of extraordinary ministry was far greater than what he brought in. Charity fills a hole or two. It stood in place of other sorts. It stood when nothing else could. The great had fallen, as the brute hardware came down. It stood. A poem by J. Chester Johnson Weight Loss Group is meeting in Davis Hall every Wednesday morning at 9:30AM followed by a program and discussion group at 10. Meetings generally last an hour or less. Examples are: canned chicken, beef stew, Spam, chili, chicken and dumplings, etc. If there are any questions, please contact Roy or Jan Owings; phone 770-517-4781. For nearly 75 years, Episcopal Relief and Development has been the compassionate response to human suffering around the world. ERD serves people in their time of need, but also to stand with them as they rebuild their lives and communities. Working with Anglican and ecumenical partners, ERD responds immediately to civil and natural disasters, delivering medicine, blankets, food, clean water and other necessities. Please consider making a donation for the relief of flood victims on the Gulf Coast, and wildfires in the Western U.S. (www.episcopalrelief.org). Then ERD works with communities to secure their food supplies, offering agricultural training, seed and farm tools, healthy animals to feed families and provide income, job training and micro-credit loans to start small businesses. As well as securing a nutritious food supply, ERD introduces primary health initiatives, counseling and caring for traumatized individuals, providing access to drinkable water and sanitation systems, and by targeting diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria, especially in hardest-hit areas of Latin America and Africa.
