A former player for the NY Giants, Mark is now retired from football, and had written a great novel called Rough and Tumble. Definitely worth reading if you have time. Unlike many of the guests I interview for our programs, Mark is actually someone I've known well for a long time. And it’s a friendship forged over mutual perspectives about the sacredness of human life. You see, back in the 1980s, Mark Bavaro and I participated in a peaceful and prayerful demonstration at a notorious abortion center in New York City. As participants in that demonstration we allowed ourselves to be arrested as a witness to the reality of what goes on in clinics like that. And what goes on in clinics like that is the subject of my Pastor's Letter today. October has been designated by the American Bishops as Respect Life Month. So throughout next month, I'm going to ask that you pray for a new found sense of appreciation for the belief that every human life is a gift of God, and no one has the right to compromise that gift. That means that every life, from the moment of conception until natural death, is to be treated with dignity, respect and goodness. No one has the right to determine that some lives have value while others do not. When we make that determination, we're really trying to play God. Our job as believers is to let God be God. He gives life. We simply cannot supercede Him in taking human life. But contradict God's plan is exactly what we're doing in 2013 America. A few facts to make the point: In the USA, we presently abort just under a million and a half pre-born children every year. And thanks to the 1973 Supreme Court decisions Roe Vs. Wade and Doe Vs. Bolton, the right to terminate a child exists through the full nine months of pregnancy. No other western industrialized nation allows for this extreme permissiveness when it comes to termination of pre-born life. We Americans are only matched in our extreme policies and laws by the Communist Chinese government. Not very good company there! It's worth mentioning here that one in five American couples have difficulty with infertility, resulting in over two million applications to adopt every year by American families. Of that 2 million who seek to adopt, fewer than 50,000 will succeed. Why? Because we abort the very children who are desired for adoption. Put more simply, we have a home and a family for every child conceived. The problem? We're not letting the babies who are wanted be born! Consider these other frightening aspects of our abortionembracing culture: We don't allow our minor children to go on a field trip at school without parental permission, and doctors may not prescribe medicines for your under18-year-old without parental permission. But a young woman, under 18, may obtain an abortion without parents Page 3 even having the right to know that the abortion is taking place. Last year, the youngest girls in New York State to obtain abortions without parental notice were only twelve years old! How insane have we become? Or consider this: in every surgery performed in America, a doctor is obligated to give the patient something called informed consent. That means that the doctor explains the ramifications of the surgery and possible side effects. That's true for every surgery except one: abortion. A doctor is under no obligation to give information on this, the most often performed surgery in the nation. And, interestingly, the folks at Planned Parenthood, so devoted to a woman's right to choose abortion, have consistently opposed legislation which would give women the right to informed consent. What is it they fear? And why is knowledge something they want to avoid? And then there's the issue of tax money. A woman's right to have a child aborted is protected by Roe Vs. Wade. But the federal government has never mandated that with that right comes the use of taxpayer funding for that choice. Unless you live in New York State! Because living here, we actually pay for over 58,000 abortions every year through state mandated Medicaid funding. Most states make no such demand. But our governor and many of our legislators, insist that our tax money be used to pay for the choice to take human life. All of these facts are offered to help us focus on why the month of October is such an important time of reflection about life and the need to keep it protected. Now some will argue that certainly abortion is bad. But, after all, it's only "one issue." And that's true. But that one issue involves life itself. Let me offer a comparison. Would we support a candidate who is right on most things but supports slavery? Of course not. Would we back a candidate who is in agreement with us on many things, but thinks child abuse is ok? Absolutely not. These are examples of truly disqualifying issues. We simply cannot compromise on these. So why is it ok for us to live comfortably with any public official who is good on many things, but supports the right to terminate pre-born children through the full nine months of pregnancy? Bottom line: it's not right. And our job as Catholic Christians is to stand vigilant in defense of every human life. Please use the important month of October to speak up in defense of those who are the voiceless ones, our unborn sisters and brothers who count on you and me. In the Lord of Life, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor Page 4 Sunday Sept. 22, 2013 Our Parish depends solely on your generosity to meet each week’s expenses. On the weekend of October 26th & 27th, Our Lady of Lourdes will be hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. They provide maternity housing, medical care, referrals, cribs, car seats, diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed. We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your change. Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother’s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place. Let us pray with our whole heart for the lives of our unborn children.
