St. Valentine, The Real Story

Flowers, candy, red hearts and romance. That's what Valentine's Day is all about, right? Well, maybe not.
The origin of this holiday for the expression of love really isn't romantic at all -- at least not in the traditional sense. Father Frank O'Gara of Whitefriars Street Church in Dublin, Ireland, tells the real story of the man behind the holiday -St. Valentine.
"He was a Roman Catholic Priest at a time when there was an emperor called Claudias who persecuted the church at
that particular time," Father O'Gara explains. “He also had an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people. This
was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because married soldiers might
be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or families if they died."
"I think we must bear in mind that it was a very permissive society in which Valentine lived," says Father O'Gara.
"Polygamy would have been much more popular than just one woman and one man living together. And yet some of
them seemed to be attracted to Christian faith. But obviously the church thought that marriage was very sacred between
one man and one woman for their life and that it was to be encouraged. And so it immediately presented the problem to
the Christian church of what to do about this."
"The idea of encouraging them to marry within the Christian church was what Valentine was about. And he secretly
married them because of the edict."
Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against command of Emperor Claudius the second. There are legends surrounding Valentine's actions while in prison.
"One of the men who was to judge him in line with the Roman law at the time was a man called Asterius, whose daughter was blind. He was supposed to have prayed with and healed the young girl with such astonishing effect that Asterius
himself became Christian as a result."

In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution of a
beating, stoning, and finally decapitation all because of his stand for Christian
marriage. The story goes that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius' daughter. He inspired today's romantic missives by signing it, "from your
Valentine."
"What Valentine means to me as a priest," explains Father O'Gara, "is that
there comes a time where you have to lay your life upon the line for what you
believe. And with the power of the Holy Spirit we can do that -- even to the
point of death."
Valentine's martyrdom has not gone unnoticed by the general public. In fact,
Whitefriars Street Church is one of three churches that claim to house the remains of Valentine. Today, many people
make the pilgrimage to the church to honor the courage and memory of this Christian saint.
"Valentine has come to be known as the patron saint of lovers. Before you enter into a Christian marriage you want
some sense of God in your life -- some great need of God in your life. And we know, particularly in the modern world,
many people are meeting God through his Son, Jesus Christ."
"If Valentine were here today, he would say to married couples that there comes a time where you're going to have to
suffer. It's not going to be easy to maintain your commitment and your vows in marriage. Don't be surprised if the
'gushing' love that you have for someone changes to something less "gushing" but maybe much more mature. And the
question is, is that young person ready for that?"
"So on the day of the marriage they have to take that into context," Father O'Gara says. "Love -- human love and sexuality is wonderful, and blessed by God -- but also the shadow of the cross. That's what Valentine means to me

Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful
group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes
“Ministry of Consolation” team. The most valuable gifts
we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The
precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one.
Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention
to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this
particular ministry can never have too many helping hands.

MIDSHORE MOTHERS' CENTER
NURSERY SCHOOL OPENING!
We are pleased to announce the re-opening of our nursery school program
for 2-1/2, 3, and 4 year olds! Registration is going on right now for our 2.5
year old nursery school program, which will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 am-11:30am as a separation class from February-June. Our
tuition for this program is $600, with a non-member registration fee of $50
(waived for Mother’s Center members). Payments may be made in monthly
installments.
We are also accepting ongoing registration for the 3 and 4 year program which will begin in September
2015. Our program objectives and educational goals are:
NURSERY SCHOOL PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
Promote cooperative play with other children.
Enhance self-esteem by providing your children with a safe, happy atmosphere in which to learn and grow.
Allow both parent and child to feel comfortable separating from each other.
NURSERY SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL GOALS
Social: sharing, playing with peers, communicating with adults, feeling comfortable with oneself
Emotional: learning independence and cooperation, recognizing the feelings of others
Physical (Gross motor skills): jumping, hopping, skipping, etc.
Physical (Fine motor skills): arts and crafts, drawing, painting, writing, using Play-Doh
Intellectual: learning the alphabet, numbers, shapes, colors, relationships (opposites), seasons, animals
Life skills: closing zippers and buttons, tying shoes, toilet training, health and wellness
The Midshore Mothers’ Center…where you can give your child a strong foundation for the future in a warm
and caring environment.
Our classrooms include an interactive calendar, dress-up corner, blocks, peg boards, puzzles, a train table, Cozy
Coupe cars, a kitchen set, and other terrific hands-on toys. We have two indoor play rooms and a huge outdoor play
yard for all age groups to enjoy.

This past year, the young people from our parish youth groups, high schools, college and young adult groups,
took Pope Francis’ words to heart and participated in 28 Midnight Runs. What is a Midnight Run? It’s the opportunity to allow the Christ that each of us holds inside to meet the Christ in another. By serving the poor, we
become one with them as Jesus did. Through these “Jesus Runs” groups bring food, clothing, conversation
and hope to those who are materially poor. These Jesus runs help us to bring the Church out to the streets as
we embrace those whose only experience of Church may be through the eyes an hands of those who serve
them.
If you are interested in either participating in one of these runs, have your group do a sock, hoodie or backpack drive or make toiletry bags please contact Marianne Sheridan at [email protected]. I would be happy

talk and honest answers to questions of faith. FOT is a
venue where a young adult can meet other young adults
who are also living out their faith. Next Faith on Tap will
be on Monday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wantagh
Inn, across from the Wantagh RR Station.
Our talk for this evening will be “The Hobbit: The Journey
of a Soul” given by Anthony Gentile, a dynamic and passionate speaker who works closely with the Young Adult
Ministry in the Diocese, is a husband, father of 5 and has
served on the Executive Board of the Long Island Catholic
Men’s Conference. Anthony is passionate about ministering to young adults and furthering the gospel of Jesus Bishop McDonnell Alumnae Association
