Dear Friends:
In an earlier Pastor's Letter, I mentioned that we were contemplating creating a spiritual Shrine in the parish dedicated to
the memory of Father Robert Mason. The Shrine would be located in the Chapel, at the place that was Father Mason's
confessional. The thought is that the Shrine should contain a statue of St. John Vianney, known as the Cure of Ars. Like
Father Mason, this saint was remembered for his long hours of hearing confession, and for helping many to be reconciled to God through this Sacrament of Mercy. The Shrine would also have a picture of Father Mason and a plaque of
dedication to his ministry.
Happily, we now have a sketch of what that Shrine might look like thanks to the artistic talent of parishioner Bob
Cariola. The sketch is printed here for your consideration. If you have any feedback or additional ideas for the Shrine,
please feel free to let me know.
Several of the items in the Shrine will be available to be memorialized, and I'll provide those items in detail in future bulletins.

In other areas of interested, I want to congratulate parishioner Vincent Lentini on the publication of his latest book. Our
talented parishioner has researched and written a powerful overview of the aims and purposes of ISIS, with necessary
information in understanding where this great evil originated and what we need to know to combat this inhumane and
growing threat.
In future bulletins, you can find more specific information about the book. It's available free of charge online and should
be read by every informed citizen. Congratulations Vincet Lentini!
Finally, I want to address a moral concern that impacts many families. It's the issue of life support and what constitutes
Ordinary Vs. Extraordinary medical care. This issue was brought home to me by the recent death of a great priest of the
diocese. This dedicated priest had suffered ill health for many years, but spent the last 14 years of his life ministering to
the elderly and infirm. Meanwhile his own battle with health necessitated regular dialysis. After experiencing this care,
he decided recently to stop treatment. In short order he slipped away and we celebrated his life at a beautiful funeral
Mass this week.
His choice is a choice that many people face either for themselves or their loved ones. How much must we do to stay
alive?
The Church has indicated that such decisions be based on many factors. Among them is the chance the patient has of
returning to health vs. the real possibility that our lives are naturally winding down. So, for example, patients should
normally be provided nutrition and hydration as ordinary. But extraordinary care is another matter entirely. So, for example, a machine that does the breathing for a patient is considered extraordinary. And the decision to continue on this
mechanical lifeline must be measured against the realistic chances of recovery. We don't keep a body going just to keep
it going. We use medical care and technology in the hope of a realistic chance of future life lived with dignity and purpose.
The priest who decided to stop dialysis was making a moral decision. He had used the body God gave him well for over
70 years, but now he was going to let nature take it's course. He did not want 'artificial' means used to keep him alive.
He was grateful for his life but ready to go home to God. These decisions are always sensitive, personal and as nuanced
as the patient involved. And one size does not fit all!
How we want to live our lives and how we want to prepare to go home to God are issues we should discuss and plan for
ahead of time. A will in place for everyone makes great sense. And a 'living will' indicating our health proxy and indicating our choices about medical care is also a good thing.
Please give these issues some careful thought. We so often talk about death as if it happens only to others. But, of
course, it happens for us all. And being ready and prepared is not only logical, it's also what the well prepared Christian
does with joyful and hopeful anticipation.
Have a blessed week.
In the love of Christ,
Msgr. Jim Lisante
Pastor

“Ministry of Consolation”
Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful
group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes
“Ministry of Consolation” team. The most valuable gifts
we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The
precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one.
Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to
assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands.
Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM,
please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry’s call to love and care
for one another.
Thank you so much to our coordinator, Deacon Frank Gariboldi and all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful
ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260 if
you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your considAs our wonderful group of “Care Blanket” volunteers con- eration.

VISIBILITY MATTERS: There is a weekly prayerful presence at the Planned Parenthood facility in Massapequa on Saturday mornings, 10:30am-noon, 35 Carmans Rd, Massapequa (across from the mall parking lot).
For information: 516-541-8056. We need your presence now more than ever!
SPIRITUAL ADOPTION: This program involves making a personal commitment to pray daily for one unborn child who is in danger of being aborted. You are asked to ‘spiritually adopt’ one unknown baby and pray
that this child be carried to term and experience the fullness of life as God intended. Daily prayer: "Jesus,
Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually
adopted who is in danger of abortion.” (Prayer of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen)
HOPE AND HEALING AFTER ABORTION: The Sisters of Life host monthly Days of Prayer and Healing, monthly Gatherings, and Hope and Healing Weekend Retreats. These events are opportunities to experience the loving mercy of God in a safe and
sacred space. All retreats are led by the Sisters of Life and women who have experienced both the suffering of abortion and the joy
of healing in Christ. The retreats are directed by faithful priests who have a sensitivity and a heart for those who suffer. They include witnesses of mercy, Scripture sharing, personal prayer, opportunity for Sacramental Confession, and the Holy Sacrifice of the
Mass. Call 866-575-0075 or email: [email protected]
DID YOU KNOW - A ‘conservative’ estimate of the number of abortions committed worldwide since 1966 is 2 billion? There are
7 billion human beings alive on the planet. That means over a quarter of the human race has been aborted over the past 50 years. 56
million children have lost their lives to abortion in the United States since the ‘legalization’ of abortion in 1973.
FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM - June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day. “While Americans presume that the Constitution guarantees their rights, in practice our rights survive or disappear
based on how firmly we defend them.” (Archbishop Charles J. Chaput) Annual Rally for Religious Freedom – June 27 at
7:30pm, St. John the Baptist High School. Keynote speaker is Archbishop William Lori, chair of USCCB Committee on Religious Freedom. We ask parishioners to consider daily Mass and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament to protect religious freedom
both here in the United States and around the world. Be united in prayer with us during these two weeks when we raise our hearts
and voices to protect this most precious of God’s gifts, the right to freedom of conscience and freedom of religion in private and in
public. For more information: www.CatholicsforFreedomofReligion.org 631-896-8331
NEONATAL COMFORT CARE PROGRAM: The Life Center presents Dr. Elvira Parravicini, neonatologist and Director of the
Neonatal Comfort Care Program at NY Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, June 21st, 7pm-9pm, Knights
of Columbus #4428, Our Lady of the Rosary Council, 759 Long Island Ave, Deer Park. Seating is limited. RSVP to Lisa at
516-798-8746. Dr. Parravicini’s interventions include prenatal counseling of couples expecting an infant potentially affected by a
life-limiting condition, in collaboration with the Center of Prenatal Pediatrics, and proposal of Comfort Care plan when appropriate.
She coordinates the delivery plan and the postnatal care of the infant with the multidisciplinary team. The focus of compassionate
care is to provide the most comfortable and loving environment to an infant whose life is presumably very short. Essential points in
the infant’s management are providing bonding, warmth, hydration and pain control. Dr. Elvira works with the multidisciplinar y
team to facilitate the family’s preferences during hospitalization and connections with community resources.
FACE THE TRUTH – July 1st – Defend the freedom to be born. Pro-life Face the Truth event on Friday, July 1st from 2:30pm to
4:00pm. Location is at LIE Exit 70S and County Route 111, Manorville. Abortion denies the right to life of innocent babies. Without the Right to Life you have no other rights! We hold signs (provided) on the public sidewalk in a peaceful outreach to encourage
the loving positive “Choose Life” option. Please stand up for the unalienable right to LIFE. Sponsored by the Long Island Coalition
for Life. 631-243-1435 [email protected]
A new film by English director Thea Sharrock, Me Before You, has been met with scathing criticism from disability rights activists. The film tells the story of a young paraplegic, Will, and his new carer, Lou, with whom he develops an unlikely romantic relationship. The film has the typical trappings of a Hollywood rom-com – stunning actors, wealth, castles – yet with one not so subtle
twist: Will wants to be euthanized…But despite their burgeoning romance, Will and Lou don’t live happily ever after. Unlike the
similar film The Intouchables, the tenor of this story is [that] Will’s paraplegia is not worth enduring. He chooses to end his life,
despite Lou’s objections. Disability rights activists protested at the premier of the film in London earlier this week, unveiling a placard that read: “Me Before You is not a romance. It is a disability snuff movie, giving audiences the message that if you’re a disabled
person you’re better off dead.” Writing in The Guardian, disability rights activist Penny Penner attacked the film’s ‘anti-disability’
message: “A piece of fairytale romance is what it purports to be, but what perhaps is a clever device for writer Jojo Moyes, to me
underlines the view that you are better off dead than a living, disabled burden on your loved ones.” (Xavier Symons, Bioedge.org,
6/4/16)

Catholic Charities – An Equal Opportunity Employer
Young Adult Ministry
Are you a young adult in your 20s and 30s? Looking to
grow deeper in your faith and meet other faith-filled young
adults?
Join us at Sunken Meadow State Park, Kings Park on
June 23th at 6pm for a BBQ and “Scripture in the
Sand” – Lectio Divina – Praying with Sacred Scripture. You don’t have to know “how to do” Lectio Divina,
just come with an open heart as God speaks to you through
sacred scripture. BBQ at 6pm in Field #4 … Lectio to follow on the Beach … All who attend will receive a pocket
gospel, an opportunity to experience Jesus through the
scriptures and to witness God’s beautify creation as seen
through nature.
If you would like to join us, please rsvp to Marianne Sheridan at [email protected] by June 22. Treat yourself to a
“night out” with “Scripture in the Sand”.
