SAND SCOOPS
A NEWSLETTER FOR EMPLOYEES OF THE CITY OF ORANGE BEACH
July Birthdays
“Another July 4th holiday with few major problems over the busy weekend. Keep up the
good work as we continue to hear many visitors to our city, compliment our efforts in
such a great cleanup and recovery compared to our neighboring cities. Great job!
- Steve Russo, Mayor
Fireworks Light the Gulf of Mexico Skies
Traffic was heavy but moving, and crowds were large
with the fireworks show for Orange Beach blasting off
one night early. The July 3rd night attracted many new
visitors from the western end of the island. Police, Fire
and Street Department are to be commended for a good
plan and action in keeping vehicles moving along. Public
works crews worked extra hours to get the right of ways
cleaned and cut prior to the big weekend. Overall, another successful event for the City of Orange Beach and
thanks to each employee on their role. Thousands enjoy
our city and your efforts make the impression a positive
one for all. The 2005 summer tourist season is proving to
be a good one thus far, as visitors are renting what is
open and retail sales look good for the year.
FIRE DEPT Promotions
Commitment to their career and ongoing
training and hard work lead to more promotions in the City of Orange Beach Fire
Department. Chief Forney Howard presented five firemen with their respective
bars, badges and emblems. Congratulations to the entire department on making
Orange Beach one of the premiere rescue departments in the State of Alabama.

Orange Beach Public Library Director Bonnie Lee was the recent recipient of the Orange Beach Lions Club
“Lion of the Year” award. Bonnie Lee chaired this year’s Lions Club-sponsored Wayne Perdue All-Star Band
Reunion, an event that raised $4,000 for Lions-related charities. The Orange Beach Lions Club meets for
lunch at noon on the first and third Wednesday of every month at Lester’s on Canal Road.
Guests are always welcome. For information about the Lions, call 967-3344. Congratulations Bonnie!
Women’s Firearms Safety Class—Huge Success
The Orange Beach Police Department can put another notch in their belt as the Women’s Firearm Safety Class drew
over 50 participants for the four week course. A diverse mixture of women from around Orange Beach participated in
the sessions. City employees, doctors, veterinarians, bankers, retirees and college students all comprised the group.
Learning the basics of handgun safety was the priority. This week the members hit the shooting range to practice
their skills and fire the live weapons. Great job to the Police Department on their direction and lessons for the women
of our community.
