THE LION’S ROAR November 2015 A View from the Courtyard - By Father Jerry Thompson Dear Friends, 1309 R Street Lincoln, NE 68508 Phone: 402-474-1979 www.stmarks-episcopal.org On occasion, someone will say something like, “We could really use an x-and-such.” And I’ll say, “We really need a wish list!” Holy Eucharist ScheduleSunday—8:30 & 10:30 a.m. Below are a few wish list items that have occurred to people, and their approximate cost if we know it. It’s partial but a beginning. Please pass on your ideas! The other day I said it to Gwen – and she’s making one! We’ll soon have a wish list! Periodically we’ll publish it and you can review it and see what strikes your fancy. Or a few parishioners can go together to purchase an item. And once in a while, the Vestry will decide that some item on the list is something it should take care of. Flat screen TV for the lounge Cable TV for the lounge ($850 annually) New furniture for the lounge (where Adult Forum meets) New flooring for the lounge Rug for the narthex Linoleum for the kitchen New desk chairs for the Bookkeeper & Office Manager ($300) Seasonal Banners for front of building (approx. $700) Banners advertising concerts & recitals (approx. $300) Tuesday—12:30 p.m. Wednesday—7:00 p.m. The Rt. Rev. J. Scott Barker, Bishop The Rev. Dr. Jerrold Thompson, Rector The Rev. Dr. Sidnie White Crawford, Priest Associate As I say, this is only a beginning, so please add your own ideas—and think about how you can contribute to the community effort! The Rev. Gretchen R. Naugle, Priest Associate Stephanie Hill, Senior Warden CHRISTMAS EVE ...PLEASE NOTE!!! Opal Doerr, Junior Warden We’re trying something different this year! We are having only ONE Christmas Eve Eucharist beginning at 7:00 p.m. There will be NO 11:00 p.m. Eucharist. Jessica Freeman, Treasurer Why? Lisa Sutton, Asst. Treasurer 1. During the last several decades, a phenomenon has been occurring throughout the church; fewer people are attending the later Eucharist and more people are attending the earlier one. Perhaps it’s the reality of an aging membership. Sarah Fairchild, Christian Education 2. Nora Pitts, Child Care The choir traditionally prepares special music for Christmas Eve, and this way more people will be able to enjoy it (the choir has normally sung at the later Eucharist only). We’ll also continue to offer youth music, as has been done for years. Kurt Knecht, Music Director Gwen Colgrove, Office Manager Diane Crawford, Bookkeeper Roger Hochstetler, Sexton St. Mark’s on the Campus strives to be a Eucharistic Community of reflection and action, acceptance and growth, Gospel and world. 3. Some years ago, we stopped using Rite I at 11:00 p.m., so the two eucharists are the same in that regard. Given these realities, we decided to combine the two eucharists into one and have one large celebration. As usual, we’ll have a birthday cake for Jesus and people are also welcome to bring desserts for the congregation to enjoy. We’ll have a combined party for all! Let us know what you think afterwards….. With prayers and blessings for you all, Father Jerry+ 1 THE VESTRY Meeting notes—October 18th .... November 2015 Mark Musick & Martha Davies—representing the Operating Endowment Fund Committee, proposed a final draft of a planning document for the Fund. A principle balance of $50,000 would be achieved (by donation and pledges) over a three year period before interest would be drawn. St. David’s and St. Matthew’s have expressed interest in assisting with our Lion in the Courtyard Refugee Family Sponsorship. Colleague of Rev. Sidnie’s, Abla Hassan, will be presenting a program on Refugees on November 15th at St. Mark’s on the Campus. Parishioners are asked to bring a brown bag lunch that day following the 10:30 a.m. Eucharist. Kurt Knecht will be ordering a cover and a platform to ease moving the baby grand piano. The Sexton’s pay and hours were reviewed. Everyone is very happy with Roger Hochstetler’s work and compensation will be raised to $400 per month. Snow Emergency procedures were reviewed as to how the parishioners will be notified of a cancellation or delay of services. The Capital Improvement Fund was reviewed and 5% will be moved to make improvements to the Lounge floor and other items as they arise. A discussion was held regarding the tree in the courtyard. It is dying and removal and a replacement will be discussed at a later date. Project Resource is an initiative designed to help Episcopal congregations become more deeply engaged spiritually in the areas of financial development. Applications must be forwarded to the Diocesan office and six (6) parishes will be selected to participate. The next Vestry meeting is scheduled for November 22nd @12:15 p.m. in the Allington Youth Room. This is a week later than the normal schedule to accommodate the speaker on the 15th. HUSKERS HELPING THE HOMELESS Thanks to an incredible community and 600+ volunteers, over $50,000 was raised in support of Matt Talbot Kitchen’s hunger relief during the 2015 “Husker Helping the Homeless!” Special thanks to the University of Nebraska Athletic Department for partnering with us each year on this event and to St. Mark’s on the Campus for allowing us to utilize their facility as a central meeting location for the event. 2 November 2015 The pantry workers thank all who have given groceries and cash donations. As mentioned before, we give out MANY more families of one and two than we do larger ones, so we need the small versions of most products more frequently (ie: cooking oil, cereals, pancake mix, juices, etc.). Thanks again for your continued support. Our current needs are: St. Mark’s Food Pantry Mixed fruit, canned peas, individual juices, individual cold cereals, family-size oatmeal and individual desserts. HOLIDAY HUGS During Advent, St. Mark’s on the Campus will collect hats, underwear, gloves, socks and any other warm, new or gently used garments to help the people at the City Mission deal with winter weather. Collection boxes will be in place the first Sunday in Advent. A colleague of Sidnie White Crawford’s will speak at a brown bag lunch on Sunday, November 15th. Abla Hassan is Syrian and teaches Arabic at UNL. She will share her perspective on the current situation in Syria, which has resulted in so many refugees seeking homes around Europe and the rest of the world. Bring or grab a lunch that day after the Eucharist and join us! 3 November 2015 In going through closets and storage spaces, I have come upon numerous pictures. I need help in identifying the time and the individuals in many of the photos. Please call the office if you can assist me in determining the time period and names of former parishioners– thank you!! Gwen C. If you are requesting use of the church building, either the Chapel or the Lounge, or need space for a meeting, please contact Gwen in the office. The church office handles the calendar and a response can be given quickly by contacting Gwen by email. Working with Dr. Pete Eklund, we will once again be presenting free lunch time concerts of the Bach Cantatas at St. Mark’s. The Bach Cantatas are the music that Bach wrote for the church services in Leipzig when he was musical director for the city. The cantatas will feature choir, soloists, and a variety of instrumentalists from the University. The cantatas are some of the most beautiful music Bach ever wrote. On November 6th, Matthew Oltman (former artistic director of Chanticleer and current DMA student) will conduct Bach’s Cantata Ein Feste Burg ist unser Gott. This is Bach’s Reformation Day cantata based on Luther’s classic hymn “A mighty fortress.” On November 23rd, Colt Ballou will conduct Bach’s Cantata Wachet Auf, ruft uns die Stimme. This cantata is based on Jesus’ parable of the Ten Virgins and use the hymn tune we now sing as “Sleepers wake.” Dr. Kurt Knecht NOVEMBER BIRTHDAYS Kim Thomason Bob Zimmerman Bob Kuzelka Ken Shepard Beth Hemmer Parker Durham Loris Purtzer Marcelline Hutton Brent Cejda Kathy Schmutte Ethan Kemper Larry Reznicek Craig Lawson Katherine MacLeod Hill 8 November 2015 ALL SAINTS SUNDAY—NOVEMBER 1st. We will add to the Prayers of the People the names of people who have died in the last year for whom you would like us to give thanks. Each year, the Vestry receives nominations for the Extraordinary Service Award. This award is presented at our Annual Meeting in January and honors a person or persons who have served Christ as part of St. Mark’s on the Campus in a notable way during the previous twelve months. If you would like to nominate someone, please let one of the wardens know (Stephanie Hill or Opal Doerr). She will ask you to write a description of the person’s/group’s service, and all nominations will then be considered by a panel of highly trained evaluators. :) If you wish to check out previous winners, they are listed on the plaques in the Lounge. Likewise, the parish occasionally awards the Peek Award to someone(s) who has contributed in outstanding ways to the life of the parish over an extended period of time. If you would like to nominate someone for the Peek Award, the same process is followed. Book Mark’s Club Book: Words of Life: Selected Sermons by Fr. Don Hanway When: Sunday, November 15th @3:00 p.m. Where: Nan Hanway—128 N. 13th, #1009 THANKSGIVING INTERFAITH SERVICE We will participate in an interfaith Thanksgiving service on Sunday, November 22nd at 3:00 p.m. at the South Street Temple. Join our brothers and sisters of other faiths in lifting grateful hearts to God! 9 November 2015 MAKING STRIDES 2015 SHINING SUCCESS Once again St. Mark's on the Campus raised over $500 for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the annual benefit for the American Cancer Society. Susan Ugai, Linda Willard, and Peg Sheldrick comprised the St. Mark's team. Liz and Carol Thompson walked in honor of Fr. Jerry's birthday. It was a beautiful day in every possible way. Bishop Barker’s 2015 Visit with the Sunday School On September 6, 2015, Bishop Scott Barker visited St. Mark’s on the Campus accompanied by Canon to the Ordinary Liz Easton. They spent the hour preceding the 10:30 service with the Sunday School children and staff. The children were able to ask a variety of interesting and thoughtful questions. They had more questions than time, which he generously answered for us by e-mail. This is the second of a three-part series The Job Bishop Bark’s favorite thing about being a Bishop is getting to visit the different churches on Sunday. He also said that he really enjoyed spending time with the children. His least favorite thing about the job is dealing with problems. Liz’s favorite thing about being the canon is also visiting the churches. They are all different (sizes, type of people) yet thy all worship the same. All serve the community and all are welcoming. Liz said her least favorite thing was probably when sad things happen. A Bishop might preside at a wedding, baptism or funeral for a local priest of his or her family member. A Bishop makes $130,000 a year. A Bishop is a bishop for life. Bishop Baker expects to be the Bishop for Nebraska until he retires. However, he can quit any time he wants (Note: that this was specifically asked. He did not add that on his own.) Episcopal Bishops can be married. In fact, Bishop Barker is married and has two children, ages 22 & 24. During the week the Bishop works in his office in Omaha along with his staff. He might be working with a church in trouble or transition (such as when a priest leaves). He also plans camps and ministry fairs. A canon is a person who has a special job in the diocese. The Canon to the Ordinary helps the bishop with the work of the whole Diocese. ……...To Be Continued…. 10 OFFICE HOURS The church office/building is open Monday—Friday; 9:00 a.m. -12:00 and 1:00-3:30 p.m. During these hours, the Office Manager , Gwen Colgrove, will be present and the telephone will be answered (provided, of course, she is in the office and not elsewhere in the building nor already on the phone, in which case a message may be left. (Outside of these hours, the doors will be locked and the phone will not be answered.) Diane Crawford, Bookkeeper, will be in her office Mondays 9-3:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday 9:00-Noon. The Rector (Father Jerry) is available by appointment Tuesday thru Sunday, although he is generally around the church building 10-3 Tuesday thru Friday. However, because of worship, meetings, lunches and coffees with parishioners, pastoral visits, appointments away from the church office, time set aside for sermon preparation, administrative tasks, study and reading, etc., an appointment with the Rector is always recommended. Many thanks from your church office staff!!!
