Finish Str ong - 2007 squad will rely on depth
After an impressive 41-19 showing last season, CSI head coach Boomer Walker is asking a little more from this season’s Golden
Eagle squad.
“Last year I’m not sure we knew how to win late,” Walker said. “This year we want to win big games late. We need to remove
doubt and be as confident in game one as we are at the end of the year in the tournament.”
Still, the Golden Eagles took second to Dixie in the Region 18 Tournament. This year, there is no Dixie. The Dixie State College
Rebels moved to the NCAA Division II ranks.
Just like last season, CSI’s strength will be its pitching. Although the Golden Eagles lost several very good pitchers, they return
three big ones - Adam Urnberg, Jordan Latham and James Wallace.
“We expect them to have a great year talent-wise. They are very good, very competitive,” Walker said. “They will set the bar for
everyone else on the staff.”
But the talent doesn’t stop there. Walker brought in sophomore transfers Angel Chapa (TVCC) and Mike McClaren (CCSN).
Add to that two left-handed freshmen in Josh Damewood and Jason Oatman and two right-handers in Justin Smith and Jake Draeger.
Walker also has the luxury of two players who can play a position or pitch. They are Jed Hanson and Trent Johnson.
“We don’t have quite the depth that we had last year,” Walker said. “We may never have that again but we have guys that should
give us a chance to win 1-0 and 2-1 type games in a league where offense is at a premium.”
Another big area of strength will be the CSI infield.
Returners Nik Gumeson and Grant Kveder bring experience. Tony Altavilla and Willie Pratt bring athleticism and
are very competitive.
“They are dirt bag kids,” Walker said. “Having a solid
defense will be key when our strength is pitching.”
At first base, Walker can go to returner A.J. Rucker, or
freshman Jeff Hutton or Trent Johnson.
“Whoever swings the bat, will get the opportunity,”
Walker said. “We have a lot of flexibility in the infield.”
The only returner in the outfield will be Brad Mady.
“He is a great outfield,” Walker said. “He will need to
take on more of a communicative role as far as positioning
guys and be a leader.”
Walker said he might look to Kveder to play a little in
the outfield. Joining those two as options in the outfield
will be freshmen Jeff Ridgeway, Jed Hanson and Cory
Grover.
At catcher, Walker has three options in returner Grant
Vickers, sophomore transfer Shay Conder and freshman
Bo Lybeck.
“As good as we were at catcher last year, we put a big
load on Jeff Vickers to catch so much that it hurt him
offensively,” Walker said. “This year we have three guys
that can go. Grant brings leadership that the other guys can
learn from.”
With so many choices at all the positions, Walker made
it very clear that whoever hits will play.
To win the region, the Golden Eagles will need to get
past last year’s regular season winner Western Nevada.
“They have a lot of players back and have to be
considered one of the teams to beat,” Walker said. “Southern Nevada is always good. Salt Lake returns its top two
pitchers and Eastern Utah has all of its pitching back.”
In a conference that is strong year in and year out, the
Golden Eagles should be in position to challenge for the
top spot if they start well and finish strong.

Boomer Walker
3rd Season
It was only natural that Boomer Walker would someday
wear a coach’s cap at Southern Idaho. After assisting the
Golden Eagles for nine years Boomer took over as head
coach two years ago. Boomer was barely walking when his
dad, former head coach Skip Walker, started coaching at
CSI. And Boomer has always been a part of the program. He
was a 12-year-old bat boy when he witnessed the Golden
Eagles’ national championship in 1984.
Boomer starred for Twin Falls High School, leading the
Bruins to a state championship in 1988. Then, he wore the
gold and black himself when he played at Southern Idaho
from 1989 to 1992, winning all-region honors as a shortstop
in 1992. After playing at Northeast Louisiana University,
Boomer worked as a student assistant in 1995, gaining
valuable coaching experience.
In 1996, Boomer returned to Southern Idaho to re-unite with his father. The two still work together
but Boomer is the head coach and Skip continues as a hitting
instructor.
Boomer said it doesn’t feel much different to be in the
head coach’s shoes instead of assisting.
“I’ve been around here forever so it doesn’t feel any
different,” Walker said. “I still feel pressure to keep this
program on top, but not any more pressure than before.
I’m not naive to think I can accomplish what my dad
did.”
As far as
changes in the
program, Boomer
said they are very
subtle.
“My overall
philosophy of CSI
Baseball is the
same. People who
have been around
the program for a
long time won’t see a
whole lot of changes,”
he said. “I would say the only
difference is that my approach is not as old school.”
When Boomer isn’t coaching from the dugout or third base, he
enjoys waterskiing and playing softball. Boomer and his wife
Maria are busy with their son. No one was surprised he has a
baseball moniker - Tai Ripken Walker.

Dave Carter
4th Season
David Carter returned to the College of Southern Idaho
in 2004 for his third stint with the Golden Eagles.
Dave first came to CSI to play baseball in 1986, leading
the Golden Eagles to a fourth-place finish at nationals. He
finished his freshman season with a 6-2 record. As a
sophomore, Dave was selected to the all-region team, going
9-3 on the season. CSI won the region championship that
year as well.
Dave finished his college playing career at UNLV,
leading the Rebels to the national tournament in 1988 and
1989 as a pitcher in both starting and relief roles.
After playing professional baseball for two years, he
worked as a graduate assistant at Southern Utah University.
In 1995, Dave returned to CSI as an assistant coach for one year
before taking an assistant coaching job at CEU for two
years and finally an assistant position at Utah Valley
State College from 2000 to 2003.
During that span, Dave worked with 25
pitchers that have been drafted or signed
professionally.
Dave’s main responsibility at CSI is
working with the Golden Eagle pitchers.
Dave enjoys spending time with his wife,
Shelby, and their daughter Abby.

the kids and is a great asset. If the
kids put their trust in him, he will
never let them down. He wears
10,000 hats and is very good at all

Skip Walker
34th Year
Golden Eagle baseball fans know him as Skip. People
who spend a lot of time around him are familiar with the
phrases “jeezo-peezo,” “mentality,” and a few others too
colorful to print here. His players, both former and current,
can recite the five P’s - “proper planning prevents poor
procedure.” But it’s the rich history Jim Walker has brought
to the CSI program that defines who he is.
Skip Walker is a legend at CSI. Not only was Walker
inducted into the CSI Athletic Hall of Fame, but Frontier
Field was officially named the James F. “Skip” Walker
baseball field.
In his 31 years as head coach at CSI, Walker planted the
trees, built the clubhouse and played a major role in creating
one of the top five JUCO fields in the country. Along the
way, he has cultivated baseball players, winning 12 region titles, competing in nine JUCO World Series
and winning a national championship in 1984, taking third in 1988,
fourth in 1986 and fifth in 1975.
Retiring from head coaching duties in 2004, Skip
continues to be a part of CSI baseball, staying on
as a hitting coach.
Walker, 62, has been married to his wife
Julene for 40 years. They have a daughter, Carly,
and a son, Boomer, who is the Golden Eagles
head coach.
“I’m the luckiest guy in the country. I have an
offensive assistant that has won more than
1100 games in his career. I’m in a great, great
situation. He can now use his knowledge to
help the players without worrying about all
the other stuff.” - Boomer Walker on having

an assistant.

Bio
In High School: Jeff played baseball, football and ran
track at West High School.
Excelling in the classroom, Jeff earned the Principal’s
Award for his 3.8 gpa.
Jeff played on the Hitter’s Club Select team outside of
high school baseball. His coach, Greg Steffanich, was a
former Golden Eagle.

Bio
At CSI: AJ played in 16 games for the Golden Eagles,
hitting .211 with 4 RBI. His on-base percentage was
.304. He had 17 putouts with no errors in the field.
In High School: A two-year letterman, A.J. played
baseball at Riverton High School. His team placed second at regionals his junior season and won the region
championship his senior year.
As a designated hitter, A.J. was named second team
all region his junior year. His senior year, he was named
first team all region as a catcher.

Bio
In High School: A three-year letterman in baseball,
Jordan led Taylorsville High School to a third place finish at state his sophomore year and region titles his junior and senior seasons.
As a senior, Jordan earned first team all region honors.
He set his high school record for saves and least amount
of hitters walked.

Before CSI: A transfer from Minnesota State University at Mankato, Tony played his high school ball at
Lakeville Senior High School.
Atwo-sport athlete at LSHS, Tony led his hockey team
to two section championships and his baseball team to a
state championship.
As a senior, Tony earned all-conference honors in
hockey and in baseball.
Tony was named fres hman of the year at MSU Mankato.

In High School: Jed led Forest Lake High School to
conference championships his junior and senior season. He was named all-conference both years and earned
all-state honors his senior season. Jed was named the
Star Tribune Baseball Player of the Year and the Pioneer Press Baseball Player of the Year in 2006.
In 2003-04, Jed was a member of the team that won
the Mickey Mantle state championship.

At CSI: Grant played in 22 games for the Golden
Eagles last season, hitting .333 with 13 hits and 6 RBIs.
In High School: A brother to former CSI player Jeff
Vickers, Grant played his high school ball at Dover Bay
High School. In addition to competing in baseball, Grant
played rugby, basketball and volleyball.
His senior season, Grant was named MVP of his high
school baseball team and earned a silver medal for being named BC Canada Games Player. His high school
stats as a senior were .384 batting average (6th in the
league) and 34 RBIs (5th in the league).

Bio
At CSI: Grant started in 48 games last season for
CSI, hitting .301 with 6 doubles, 2 triples and 18 RBIs.
In High School: A three-sport athlete, Grant played
baseball and hockey at Lethbridge Collegiate Insititute
as well as competed in track and field. During his three
years on varsity, the high school team won the provincial championship twice and took sixth once, going a
combined 44-15 during that span. As a senior, Grant hit
.600 and led the league in home runs, doubles and
triples.
Grant helped lead Team Alberta to bronze medals in
the Canada Cup and the Canada Summer Games.

In High School: A four-year letterman at St. Francis
High School, Jake led his team to a third-place finish at
the state tournament his senior season. That same year,
Jake set school records for wins on the mound (11) and
strikeouts (98) in a season.
He was named first team all-state and first team allmetro.
Jake earned all-conference honors his sophomore
through senior year.

doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and 27 RBIs.
In High School: A four-year letterman in baseball,
Brad played high school ball at Columbia River with
CSI teammate Chris Bolton. Not only did he help his
team to four league championships but also two second-place finishes at state. Chris was named all-league
pitcher as a sophomore, all-league outfield and all-state
outfield as a junior and senior.
His senior year, Chris hit .350 with 13 home runs and
7 wins on the mound.

At CSI: Jordan finished last season 2-2 with 17 appearances. He posted a 2.41 ERA with 33 strikeouts.
In High School: A two-sport athlete at Centennial High
School, Jordan pitched and played outfield on the baseball team and was a running back for football.
His senior season, Jordan helped CHS to a fifth-place
finish at state in baseball and a third-place finish at state
in football. His junior season, Centennial won the state
championship in football.
Jordan’s individual honors included second team all
state as a sophomore and first team all state as a junior
and senior in baseball.

on the mound in the state of Nevada with 11. He also

Bio
In High School: Hailing from Delta Secondary in
British Columbia, Jeff led his team to a third-place finish in Provincials in 2004. In 2005, Jeff helped his team
to a 33-11 record, a league championship and a secondplace finish at Provincials.
His final season, Jeff was a part of a team that finished
36-14 with a league championship and a fourth-place finish at Provincials.
Jeff competed on the Ladner Reds and the North Delta
Blue Jays.

Bio
At CSI: James recorded 15 appearances as a freshman, posting a 2.37 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 30.1
innings pitched.
In High School: James lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Benicia High School. A four-year
varsity player in baseball, his team won the section
championship.
A pitcher in high school, James was named first team
all-league.
James was drafted by the Florida Marlins.

Bio
In High School: A two-sport athlete at Davis High
School, Bo played football and baseball.
As a senior, Bo led DHS to a 20-3 record. His team
won a league and district championship as well as finished 6th in the state.
Bo earned honorable mention all-league honors as a

honorable mention all-state.

Jerry Beck
Gerald L. Beck began his career at the College of Southern Idaho in
1975 and became president of the college in 2005. His many titles at the
college include Instructor, Coordinator of Trade and Industry Programs,
Dean of Continuing Education/Summer School, Vice President of
Instruction, and Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer.
Dr. Beck is an Idaho native. He received his bachelor’s degree in
Technical Education, his master’s degree in Teacher Education, and his Ed.
D. in Adult Education from the University of Idaho. He completed his post
doctoral at Harvard University Institute for Educational Management.
In addition to his duties at the college, Dr. Beck is a member of the
Twin Falls Rotary Club, and is a board member of the State Workforce
Development Council appointed by the Governor. He serves as a board
member on many local organizations including Southern Idaho Economic
Development Organization, Region IV Development Association and
Magic Valley Regional Medical Center. He is past president of the Idaho
Association of Private Industry Councils.
Dr. Beck and his wife, Barbara, have three adult children and three
grandchildren. He attributes much of his success to the opportunities
provided by the college and the support from his family and co-workers.

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate begins his first year at the helm of Golden Eagle Athletics.
Bate, who has been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gives up teaching
in the classroom to work with student-athletes and coaches on a daily
basis.
Bate, 46, said he is excited for the new challenge.
“I will miss teaching English but I think those skills I’ve used as a
teacher are very transferable to this new position and the knowledge of the
academic side of campus also will be a strength in seeing the complete
vision of the student-athlete,” Bate said. “It gives me a rounded
perspective of what our mission is. Having been a coach, it gives me an
awareness of all that is involved in being a student-athlete and the
challenges that both coaches and players have in going through a season.”
Bate said he is excited to work with all associated with CSI athletics.
“I think we have great coaches and a great staff here and the work
they’ve done this year has been very positive, not only on the court but in
the classroom and community as well,” Bate said. “I’m looking forward to
working with our many boosters, fans and corporate sponsors who have
helped make CSI a special place to be.”
Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Golden Eagles
to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 14478 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA
Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional
basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach
Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High
School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English
department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball,
track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four thirdplace state finishes.
Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the
University of Idaho in 1986.
Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
