SYNOPSIS:
Bobby (Rice) is a struggling screenwriter who tries to get romantically involved with a
friend by agreeing to take care of her dog. He's also stuck on an idea for an arty
screenplay involving talking pigeons. His friend Scott (Sexton III) is a depressed
musician bored with his girlfriend and miserable in his day job. When Bobby tells
Scott the idea for his new script, Scott leaks the info to Hart, (Galligan) Bobby’s
nemesis, a playwright whose campy drama about 9/11 has won awards and a run at
an off-Broadway theater. What begins as a quirky comedy about relationships and
writer’s block becomes a coming-of-age tale about competition and self-reliance
among the “me-generation”.
FILM’S STYLE:
Let Them Chirp Awhile is a mix of realism and romanticism. Scoring the struggles
of today's self-obsessed young people with the vintage sounds of melodramatic
orchestral music, the film celebrates and satirizes their hopes, fears and dreams.
The East Village becomes a place where everyday conflicts like having a meaningless
idea appropriated by a friend, or a breakup are heightened to meet the characters'
inflated visions of themselves. Let Them Chirp Awhile is as much a throwback to old
films as it is a look forward into the destiny-anxiety that afflicts all of us in the
digital age.
DIR E CTO R:
JONATHAN BLITSTEIN
At 23 years-old, Chicago-born Jonathan Blitstein financed and produced Let Them
Chirp Awhile, his debut feature film, with the help of friends, family members,
donated film stock, equipment and maxed-out credit cards. He is one of the youngest
filmmakers ever to write, produce, direct and edit a 35mm feature. A graduate of the
Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, he previously made a short film called "The
Fisherboy" which played at several film festivals in 2005.
FESTIVALS AND AWARDS:
Let Them Chirp Awhile was selected for opening night screening at the Woodstock
Film Festival. The film received finishing funds when it was selected as a finalist for
the Richard Vague Alumni Award at NYU Film School. It received the BEST FEATURE
FILM Award at the East Lansing Film Festival. Other festivals include Mar Del Plata
Buenos Aires, Filma Madrid, (Opening Night) Santa Fe Film Festival, Sonoma Valley
Film Festival, Cine-World Sarasota, Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival, Atlanta Film
Festival, and the Rhode Island International Film Festival where it was a Festival
Centerpiece.
"This movie...can supply the plot the [mumblecore] movement so desperately cries
out for."
“Even if the cineplexes never get the treat, Let Them Chirp Awhile fully deserves its
run on Houston Street: The Sunshine and Angelika should be preparing their
marquee as I type. Really, it’s a delight.”
“a major new filmmaker is in town.”
“The good fortune didn’t end at casting”
“It's a coming-of-age story with familiar elements, but Blitstein manages to make it
feel fresh and original…”
“Quirky diamond-in-the-rough.”
