CLUB “I’VE NEVER HAD SO MUCH GREAT TUSCAN WINE TO OFFER!!!” -ANDREW MCMURRAY SEPTEMBER 14, 2009 zachys ® WINE AND LIQUOR, INC. TUSCAN SALE! September 14, 2009 TO ALL OUR ZACHYS ITALIAN AFICIONADOS, I am writing this special “Z-Club” offer to you on the heels of last week’s long Labor Day weekend. For those of you who did not know already, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Issue #184 was released just prior to the holiday weekend. This issue was certainly one of his largest ever with... 124 Pages of printed reviews, covering 17 different categories and a total of 2,899 wines reviewed!! Last Sunday night my father-in-law called Jen and I proclaiming he had enough of the Summer party scene in Sag Harbor and could he come over for a simple grilled steak dinner with a nice glass of wine and time with his grandkids....ABSOLUTELY, what better way to finish off the holiday weekend. After all the steak and the wine was consumed he saw this “extra large Wine Advocate” sitting on the kitchen table....”WHOA!” “How is the average wine consumer going to be able to sort through an issue of that size and make sense of so many wines and so many reviews?” To which I proclaimed, “That’s what I am here for!!” I have been preaching for the last year that the combination of 2006 & 2007 vintages from Tuscany will provide some of the finest back-to-back vintages in the regions history....and this new Wine Advocate backs up all that I have been saying. In doing my job, let me boil down Italian wine critic Antonio Galloni’s thoughts on these vintages... OVERALL “TUSCANY 2006 AND 2007: A NEW GOLDEN AGE” 2006 IS THE BOMB!! • “Readers who enjoy the best Tuscany has to offer will find no shortage of compelling wines at virtually all price points in vintages 2006 and 2007. I continue to be impressed with the consistently stunning 2006s...” • “...the vintage offers incredible quality from top to bottom in all of the region’s main appellations. Over the coming months many of the higher-end bottlings will be arriving on retailers’ shelves. The best of these wines offer breathtaking richness in a style that marries ripeness with structure to a degree that has seldom, if ever, been seen in Tuscany. Although 2006 is very strong across the board, I couldn’t help notice that Maremma in particular was graced with a number of simply profound wines that readers won’t want to miss...” • “...The 2006s are big, full-bodied wines loaded with super-ripe fruit, but with plenty of stuffing underneath....” HERE COMES THE 2007’S!! • “...Based on what I have tasted so far, 2007 is shaping up to be another potentially outstanding vintage in many parts of Tuscany. ...” • “...Where producers were diligent, the wines offer an attractive combination of perfumed aromatics and soft, generous fruit in a style that is more approachable than the firmer 2006s. I tasted a number of entry-level 2007s that are beautiful for the integrity of their fruit. I am thinking in particular of the 2007 Chiantis, the best of which are especially well-balanced and succulent...” • “...they should drink beautifully upon release. Readers should buy the 2007s for early to mid-term drinking and the 2006s to cellar...” TUSCAN WHAT’S SALE! HAPPENING AND TO SUM IT ALL UP AT ZACHYS OCTOBERthat 2004 “...Tuscany offers a huge number of delicious wines in both 2006 and 2007 can be had for relatively modest sums...” Fortunately none of what has been said in this issue was a surprise to me, but what it did do was force me to pick up the phone and squeeze every last drop of some of these collectible wines from our suppliers. I am thrilled to have been able to boil this issue down for you in this special Z-Club offer. The prices in the pages that follow are exclusive to this offer and the customers receiving it. The savings offered up to 43% off will not be listed on the web site or in the store and you must mention receipt of this letter. It is a VERY exciting time to be drinking (and collecting) Tuscan wines as there is a TON of delicious wines at all price points. We look forward to hearing back from you. All my best, Andrew P.S. STOP THE PRESS!!! STOP THE PRESS!!! As is always the case with Murphy’s Law...when it rains it pours!! JOE & MARIO DO IT AGAIN!!! World renowned restaurateurs Joe Bastianich & Mario Batali have knocked it out of the ballpark again!! The La Mozza estate which is owned by Mario, Joe and Joe’s mother (Lidia Bastianich) produced one of the top selling under $20 red wines at Zachys last year in the 2006 Morellino di Scansano I Perazzi (Sadly, we have been sold out for quite some time now) with HUNDREDS of cases flying out the door. Well, as we were creating our purchase order for the new release (THE 2007 VINTAGE!), we came across this nice little review in Robert M Parker Jr.’s The Wine Advocate (Issue #184) as reviewed by Italian critic Antonio Galloni... “The just-bottled 2007 Morellino di Scansano I Perazzi is fresh, fragrant and vinous. This is an especially ripe, open vintage for this wine perfect for near-term enjoyment. Some of the verve of the superb 2006 is missing, but the 2007 compensates with a personality that is a touch more approachable. Tenuta San Guido’s (aka Sassicaia) relatively unknown entry level wine Le Difese is now on the big stage! Zachys Has “...one of the finest values in Tuscany...”!!! It is certainly no mistake that since this wine first arrived back in April this year that we have sold close to 800 CASES!!! And that was BEFORE it was ever reviewed. Tenuta San Guido, one of Bolgheri’s most famous estates...actually one of Italy’s most famous estates, and come to think of it, they produce one of the most sought after wines in the world...SASSICAIA. Suffice it to say, the wines of Tenuta San Guido come from great breeding. When we opened our first bottle of the entry-level red this Spring (LE DIFESE) we absolutely FLIPPED. Now I must admit this was not a total shock to us as we carried this wine for the very first time last year with the 2006 vintage and sold a BOAT LOAD of this wine. In reading through the newest reviews on Tuscany in Wine Advocate #184 (August 31, 2009) we were pleased (and a bit disappointed), that one of Zachys’ best “Little Secrets” from Tenuta San Guido received a great review. The reason we say disappointed is that the minute you shine a spotlight on a value like this it always has a tendency to disappear quickly! I can’t think of too many wines that deliver this level of quality for the money. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese, the wine reveals gorgeous purity in its sweet, perfumed fruit. This is an especially opulent, generous Le Difese that is simply delicious. I suppose the tannins could use a touch more polish, but that is splitting hairs at this level. The wine delivers incredible pleasure and even better, happens to be a great value...This is a superb set of releases from Tenuta San Guido, the estate that put Maremma on the map as a terroir for world-class wine...90” WA 09/09 Sale Items In This ZClub Are Drastically Reduced Net Prices. I will try with one word: Monumental. The Ornellaia team led by Oenologist Axel Heinz and Agronomist/General Manager Leonardo Raspini has done a fabulous job with these wines, which have never failed to literally send shivers down my spine on the multiple occasions I have tasted them....” WA 9/09 Le Volte de Ornellaia 2007 (90WA) {#326860} ........................ 24.99 18.50 “The 2007 Le Volte, Ornellaia’s entry-level wine, is especially opulent in this vintage. With time in the glass layers of minerals, cassis, tar, sweet herbs and French oak emerge, adding further complexity. This harmonious Ornellaia combines the richness of the vintage with superb freshness and awesome balance. Today the wine’s sheer density almost manages to hide the tannins, but they are there, and the wine will ultimately benefit from a few years in the cellar.
