Editor Priya Pathiyan 14 Mother and Baby December 2013 M&Bfitness Pilates for pregnancy Swimming Benefits: Helps balance the core muscles and provides pelvic stability 24 Mother and Baby December 2013 It has been established by doctors and fitness instructors the world over that a pregnant woman is likely to have a smoother delivery and recovery if she maintains a proper diet and fitness regime. So, let Functional Health trainer and Pilates pro Madhuri Ruia inspire you to get into motion... Words Poornima Nair Iyer Visuals Akshay Kulkarni M adhuri Ruia doesn’t believe in wasting time. No sooner we reach her studio for the photo shoot, than the 40-something Pilates expert, dressed in gym pants and a tee starts demonstrating some tough-looking exercises with so much ease and fluidity of movement that they’re bound to appeal to all women, pregnant or not. “Pilates is by far the best form of exercise during pregnancy because apart from the pelvic floor, it also focuses on breathing, muscle control and helps in correcting muscle imbalances. The woman knows how to contract the muscles and relax them during labour so the whole process becomes a lot easier,” she says. Madhuri also has advice for women who are planning to start a family soon: “The ideal time to start your exercise regime is three months in advance. Take folic acid supplements, get into the habit of eating correctly, learn the basic Pilates exercises and have a gentle cardio routine like walking. If you are already pregnant, you could do it anytime during pregnancy, provided there are no other complications.” December 2013 Mother and Baby 25 YOURtoddler 20 terrific brain-boosting ideas! Swati Popat Vats, President of the Podar Education Network, tells you how... E very baby is born with 100 billion brain cells. Some of these are connected at birth, but most of them are not. It is these connections that will happen in the first five years. Therefore, more the connections, the smarter and more efficient will be your child’s brain function. But between feeding, changing nappies and catching up on lost sleep, the focus is never truly on making these connections. As your child grows older, your focus may only be on whether he sits, stands, walks and talks on time. You may fail to realise that these developments are connected to brain growth, which means that just like you take care of feeding your baby, you also require to focus on feeding his growing brain too. Here are some brain-boosting ideas for nurturing your child’s growing brain. After all, 98 per cent of his brain develops in the first five years! 1. WATER ON THE BRAIN! More than three quarters of the brain is made of water. Ensuring that your baby is hydrated, is key.
