Is there a perfect age to get
pregnant? It’s a question
that’s probably crossed
your mind, particularly if
your 30s are around the
corner. But if you’ve put
off having a baby until
your 30s or 40s, you are
likely to have a whole lot
of queries thronging your
head. Dr Bhawana Mishra,
consultant gynaecologist
at the Apollo Cradle, shares
inputs on the best ways
to improve fertility at
different ages...

breastfeeding
Should I stop
NO, you don’t! A lot of mums today have successfully managed to ensure babies gets their
due share of nutrients while they are away at work. Experts say it doesn’t have to be one way
or another and mums can find that right balance provided they are motivated enough.
M&B shows you how to walk the line...

Breast present
Breast is best. And since the time you have popped out your little one,
you have had her suckle till she was satisfied. But now it’s time to pack
your things, hand her over to the caretaker and bid her goodbye for the
next eight hours that you’ll spend at work. You are worried sick about
how she is going to manage without you and most importantly your
breast. “A breastfeeding routine is established right from the time

babies are born. Babies usually feed about every one and a half hours.
When there is a growth spurt, usually at six weeks, the babies come
back to the breast. What you need to understand is that the more milk
the baby drains, the more is produced. So the rule to breastfeeding is
that there are no rules,” says Dr Padma Balagopal, lactation consultant
and co founder of Mothers’ and Infants’ Lactation/Breastfeeding Care
Centre (MILC) in Chennai.

Dr Reni Francis, 34, is mum to Reuben, 15 years, Ryan, 10 years, Rhea, 2.5 years. For
many women, that would be a full-time responsibility in itself. But this determined woman shares the inspiring story of how she handled early marriage and motherhood and built
a new life for herself and her family by pursuing higher education and a flourishing career...
I
was married to Francis Joseph, who
managed a school consultancy
business, when I was 19 years old. At
the time, I was pursuing my first year
B.Com at SIES College of Commerce and
Economics in Sion, Mumbai. Our parents
were very supportive of our ‘arranged love’
marriage. In July 1997, I ‘tested positive’
for my eldest son Reuben. I continued my
daily college studies (I was in the second
year by then). With a very visible ‘tummy’,
I was surely the subject of a lot of talk by
people at college, including many of my
professors, some of whom weren’t married
then! I still remember Minu Thomas, one
of my professors, who was also pregnant
at the same time as I was. It was strange
for everyone to see both of us coming
to the same campus, but in different
roles. In December 1997, I was advised
bed rest by our family gynaecologist Dr
Prasad Mahadevan from the Lakshmi
Maternity Home at Chembur, Mumbai.
This completely destabilised our plans
and the whole family was worried about
my education. But the wisest thing my
husband did was to always obtain the
doctor’s medical certificate and regularly

submit it to the college office, which kept
acknowledging the same.
challenges and completed my graduation in
the year 2000.
I gave birth to Reuben on March 31, 1998.
Once he was three months old, my husband
encouraged me to continue my education
and he met the principal of my college
requesting him to re-admit me to the second
year of my B.Com course. The principal was
very clear that it was impossible to do so as
he felt that once a woman is married and a
mother, she is not in a position to complete
her education. He thought that admitting
me to college again would be “futile”.
However, since the college had regularly
acknowledged the medical certificate for
‘pregnancy bed rest’, the Principal finally
considered our request and allowed me to
attend college. I rejoined my college studies,
though I now had a baby and family to look
after. All my friends had moved to their final
year, so I had to make new friends. I was
really blessed to have our parents who stood
with me to overcome all our challenges.
Appearing for examination and finding time
for studies was always a challenge as the
baby was very sensitive to my ‘extra effort’
in studies. Fortunately, I overcame all our
My husband left for Kuwait to start a
new job there. I had to complete my
‘secretarial course’ from Davar’s during
my vacation as we felt that would fetch
me a job as a secretary once I joined my
husband in Kuwait. Reuben and I travelled
to Kuwait in July 2000, immediately after
my graduation results. I struggled to get
a secretarial job in Kuwait due to my
ignorance of Arabic and lack of Middle East
experience. I got the opportunity to join
as a teacher and I was fortunate to join a
reputed school in Kuwait (the Gulf Indian
School at Fahaheel) as a Kindergarten
teacher (leave vacancy). In two months,
I was offered a better opportunity with a
work visa at the Jabriya Indian School. In
this school, I grew to be one of their key
supervisory staff in a few years. My son
Reuben used to travel with me to school
as a student, hence life was slowly getting
streamlined.
In December 2002, I discovered that I was
expecting my second child. I was again
