Reigns
New CD, Hot Tour:
on MTV, VH1, BET
O
n April 28, UMPG Multi-Platinum artist Prince appeared on a groundbreaking 30-minute special that aired (for the first
time ever) simultaneously on five TV outlets, including MTV, MTV2, VH1, VH1 Classic and BET. Recorded before a live audience
at Webster Hall, the program featured performances of material from Prince's new release Musicology (NPG/Columbia), which
hit retail stores April 20th. The program also featured Prince's acoustic solo performance of a medley of his greatest hits.
Prince’s The Very Best of Prince (Warner Bros.) also re-claimed number one on Billboard’s Top Pop Catalog Albums.
Rolling Stone claims this is just the beginning of the
Prince blitz. Prince drew record crowds at the opener of
his tour in Los Angeles, where he has since sold out four
more shows as well as three in New York. Following his
induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, where he
rocked New York’s Waldorf-Astoria hotel with perform-

ances of hits like “Let’s Go Crazy” and his single, “Kiss,”
Prince appeared on Today, The Tonight Show and Ellen
DeGeneres. Prince shined in the spotlight again when he
opened the 46th annual Grammy Awards with a showstealing duet alongside Beyonce Knowles. Over 1.1 million
copies of Musicology have already flown off the shelves.

DAVE GROHL
Modern Drummer
WITH HIS FOOT FIRMLY planted on
the amp of rock history and an
uncanny knack for spawning hit singles, Dave Grohl is a unique songwriter, singer, drummer, guitarist, and
video director who has set the pace
of a modern day music icon.
From Nirvana drummer, to Queens of
the Stone Age touring drummer, to Foo
Fighters frontman, to Probot ringleader, Grohl morphs bands and instruments with humor, hospitality, and a
high degree of success. His fans, like
Grohl himself, approach each of his
projects with an eager passion for the
music and a loyalty like none other.
Grohl consistently delivers with everything from hard-edged punk to metal to
melodic mid-tempo pop.
On the mind-blowing debut album from
metal project Probot, Grohl plays
“As a kid, my fantasy was
that I would go to a concert
and something would happen
to the drummer. The lead
singer would look out into
the audience and say, ‘Is
there anyone out there who
knows how to play our songs?’
And, of course, they’d have
to pick me.”

few friends joining in the bash along
the way such as Matt Sweeney
(Zwan/Chavez), Kim Thayil (Soundgarden),
Bubba
Dupree
(Voived),
Lemmy
(Motorhead), and more. Grohl also
continues to delight Foo fans, and
tour extensively, in addition to finding time to record with the likes of
David Bowie, Killing Joke, Mike
Watt, P. Diddy, Scream, The
Bangles, Tony Iommi, and the
unstoppable Tenacious D, to name a
few.
Universal Music Publishing Group is
honored to welcome the iconic Dave
Grohl to the publishing family and
pleased to work with Manager John

spread the Grohl gospel.

Universal Music Publishing Group Signs Superstar
Mariah Carey
To An Exclusive, Worldwide Publishing Deal
UNIVERSAL MUSIC PUBLISHING GROUP has signed superstar artist
and songwriter Mariah Carey to an exclusive, worldwide publishing deal.
The deal will bring her extensive catalog of hits into UMPG, including such
great songs as “Whenever You Call,” “Honey,” “Dream Lover,” “Always Be
My Baby,” and “Heartbreaker.”
Since she began her career, Mariah has become the best-selling female
performer of all time, with an incredible 15 #1 singles and two Grammy
Awards. Along the way she became the only artist to top the charts in
each year of the 1990s, and, with “Heartbreaker,” she pushed ahead of
the Beatles as the artist with the most cumulative weeks spent atop
Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart.
Possessing a spectacular five-octave range, Mariah has proven that
she is equally at home with sweeping ballads and pop, often incorporating elements of dance and hip-hop into the mix. Perhaps even more
impressive, she composes all of her own material.
Mariah has garnered many accolades throughout her career, including
2 Grammy Awards, 8 American Music Awards, Billboard’s “Artist of the
Decade” Award and the World Music Award for “World’s Best Selling
Female Artist of the Millennium.”
Mariah has commenced work on her next studio LP for Island/Def Jam
under the auspices of L.A Reid and the management of Benny Medina at
Handprint Entertainment.

(Harris/Lewis), “I Didn’t Mean To Turn
You On” (Harris/Lewis), and “Scorpio”
(Dennis Coffey).
During his 40 year career, legendary
music executive Avant has represented
the likes of blues artist Little Willie John,
rock and roll pioneer Tom Wilson,
and jazz producer Creed Taylor. In
the late 1960s, Avant successfully
engineered the first joint venture
between an African-American artist
and a major record company. Under
his own record companies, Sussex
Records and later Tabu Records,
Avant signed recording artists Bill
Withers, Dennis Coffey, and The
Presidents, in addition to playing a
key role in the successful rise of
Grammy winning Producers James
Harris (a.k.a. Jimmy Jam), Terry
Lewis and L.A. Reid.
Acknowledged as a father figure by
numerous performers and producers,
Avant has been honoured publicly for his
positive contributions to society. In 1993,
Avant was named Chairman of Motown
Records and, four years later, he became
the first African-American to serve on
the International Management Board for
Polygram. Today, Avant is president of
his own publishing companies, Avant
Garde and Interior Music Corp.
Commented David Renzer, Worldwide
President, Universal Music Publishing
Group: “Clarence Avant is one of the
true pioneers of our industry whether
wearing the hat of record label executive, label owner, manager, publisher, and
most of all as mentor to a great deal of
creative and executive talent.”

The British Invasion covers the period of unprecedented success that UK acts had while dominating the U.S.

their #1 smash “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” it lasted
through the Beat era until Psychedelia took hold in the
summer of 1967. Before this time UK artists had limited success stateside. The Beatles literally opened the

raffic was not all one way. Inspired by and
responding to the British Invasion, American artists
produced a similar level of music. In particular, it
was a golden era for the Beach Boys and the Folk
rock sound popularized by groups such as The
Mamas and Papas and The Grass Roots. From the
joyfulness of “I Get Around” to the timeless elegance of “California Dreamin’,” from the protest
anger of “Eve of Destruction” through the cool of
“Secret Agent Man” to the psychedelic revolution of
“White Rabbit,” American artists met the challenge.
