A mild Kansas winter has kept the KSDS duplex project on schedule for availability in the spring. Interior décor schemes are being finalized and furniture, appliances and other fixtures are being chosen. The final step in the project will be the sidewalks and parking lot. Personalized bricks purchased by KSDS supporters will be installed in the central courtyard between the duplexes and the parking lot. The three new duplexes will add six private studio apartments to the two currently available for use. The duplex design was chosen to maximize privacy, safety and convenience. The design of the duplexes was based on the first duplex built on the KSDS Campus in 2007. However, the new duplexes are slightly larger and have more kitchen space. Each apartment features: • An accessible bathroom • A roll-in shower • ADA-approved appliances • A washer/dryer set • An above-ground, reinforced concrete storm shelter • A small, covered front porch Did you know? • Additional housing means KSDS can have larger classes. • There is no charge to students for their stay in the duplexes. • The housing will also be used during events such as Grad Retreat and PUPS Days. Celebrate the accomplishments of the teams completing training. Canine Housing Unit tours are available after the graduation ceremony. A special tour of one of our new accessible housing apartments will also be available. Asheni, Retired Service Dog Groups in Lawrence/KC, Manhattan, and Wichita have regular get-togethers. To find out more, contact KSDS (785) 325-2256. Top Left: Painting begins with Mark Tiemeyer and Thad Tremblay applying the first coat to bathroom of west duplex. Please welcome our newest Litter Beginning the great adventure to become amazing assistance dogs KSDS, Inc. A non-profit, charitable organization The Faded Towns in Washington County Litter was born on December 4. These fluffy Golden Retrievers were bred by Kay Lund of Iowa City, Iowa. Clara, the only female, was purchased as a possible breeder and her three brothers, Spence, Emmons, and Enosdale, were donated. Over the next 18 months these puppies will be under the care of their puppy raisers who will love, socialize and teach them the basic skills they will need in preparation to be great assistance dogs. 124 West 7th Street Washington, KS 66968 (785) 325-2256 www.ksds.org – Staff – Larry Stigge, CEO Debbie Tegethoff, Training Instructor Annette Metz, Training Instructor Marcia Funke, Development Coordinator Gene Martin, Maintenance JoAnn Nider, Receptionist Letha Nelson, Client Services Jenna Petesch, CHU Director Merry Roop, Business Manager Ashley Stewart, Kennel Assistant – Board – Roger Post, President Glenda Keller, Vice President Midge Miller, Secretary Lila Keesecker, Treasurer Brent Boring, Member Regina Linenberger, Member Marilyn McGown, Member Abby Murray, Member KSDS, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to the training and placement of assistance dogs for individuals with disabilities. Winter 2012 GraduatE Daniel Kurtz Doniphan - guide Daniel Kurtz, our most recent KSDS graduate, is from rural Palmer, Kansas, about 14 miles south of Washington. Daniel was unable to be part of the late fall guide class, but because he lives nearby, trainer Deb Tegethoff was able to work with him in a one week class followed with special sessions. His handsome black Labrador, Doniphan, nicknamed Donner, from the Kansas County litter, is giving Daniel a new sense of independence and confidence. Daniel says his self-esteem has improved. He is now able to move around outside the house, take walks, get the mail, go to church and go to the local café. Daniel felt very restricted using a cane and wanted to be able to travel confidently without always depending on friends or family. Daniel believes that he and Donner make a perfect team; they are both easy going, enjoy a good stretch before doing anything and like to eat. Daniel and Donner are experiencing the true meaning of a partnership. On their first visit to a nearby Menard’s, Donner wouldn’t go through the turnstile entry because he sensed it could be an obstacle that might hurt Daniel. Daniel was able to understand this challenge and work with Donner to get through it. With the independence that Donner has brought him, Daniel hopes to be able to find new employment. He is also planning a trip to Florida to visit family and trusts Donner to accompany him on the airplane. KSDS is pleased to have helped Daniel find this new independence. Doniphan’s puppy raisers were Sarah and Adam Williams of Mormon Lake, Arizona. Annette worked at KSDS before taking some time off for her children and to operate a daycare service. She has a son, Taylor, 14 and a daughter, McKenzie, 10. With her children now older, Annette was eager to resume training dogs. Annette has been working diligently on getting caught up on all the latest training techniques and preparing dogs for students coming to class in April for the spring class. “Returning to KSDS has always been my goal. I am excited and blessed to be back working and reconnecting with Graduates and Puppy Raisers. I enjoy the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of people with disabilities through highly trained canines.” Annette is again an important part of the training team. With her experience in canine breeding, behavior and training, we look forward to her contributions to the Service dogs, changing lives, companions, helping, playing, going, one dog can change a person’s life – working hard, freeing listening, believing, unlimited, independence. Thanks to Ethan, age 10, for sharing this poem he wrote. Ethan showed how big his heart was by asking for donations to KSDS for his 10th birthday instead of presents. Ethan, pictured to the left with puppy in training Sydney, is also on the list for a KSDS Service Dog. Paris, Puppy in Training Helping Dogs future growth of KSDS. A Year After: Changing Lives, pt. 2 Fife, Breeder Tammy Gano and Social Dog Catalpa make a difference in the lives of area youth News Hound KSDS, its Puppy Raisers, and Graduates have been featured in various news articles and radio programs. Puppy Raiser Rita Jones was featured in an article in the Saturday December 17th edition of the Kansas City Star. In January, Ron Wilson of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development at Kansas State University had two news columns and two radio programs about KSDS that appeared in various outlets throughout the State of Kansas. Also in January, the Lawrence Journal-World had a feature article and videos on their online version about the KSDS organization, Puppy Raiser Nancy Giossi, and Guide Graduate Bill Dain. The Bonner Springs Chieftan, and Shawnee Dispatch also carried the same story. The Tonganoxie Mirror, Basehor Dispatch, and Lansing Current had articles about Marilyn McGown and her Social Dog Zip. We appreciate the cooperation of so many supporters in sharing the positive work that KSDS does for people. For the past year, Catalpa, a yellow lab, has been working in a school in Washington, Kansas. Tammy Gano, Catalpa’s handler, is a paraprofessional in special education at Washington County Schools. The staff, administration and students have been very accepting of Catalpa. room. On test days he gives them some extra encouragement. He has a great connection with the teacher too. One day, the teacher was passing around rock samples for the students to observe. Catalpa wanted to see them too. The teacher told him, “I’m sorry but these rocks aren’t for you.” Catalpa put his head down, let out a loud sigh and walked away. He just wanted to be part of the class. “Catalpa is a great coworker!,” a teacher said. “He can cheer up a student that may be having a bad day, get their mind off their problems for a moment, Tammy Gano and Social Dog Catalpa graduated as a team in and help them calm down the Spring of 2011. to get refocused on their school work.” Gano shared these highlights from Catalpa’s first year as a social dog: Catalpa’s favorite place to Catalpa has made a real be is in the halls before difference at our school. school and during class changes. He saw a fifth grade student in the hall he had not seen for a while. I am not sure who was more excited to see whom. The student was in tears, smiling, hugging and petting Catalpa. It was obvious Catalpa had found an old friend with his tail wagging and kisses. On Saturday, February 4, KSDS had an information booth at the Manhattan Town Center, in Manhattan, Kansas, for the Community Fair. It was a great time for the dogs to get some great exposure to the public. Puppy raisers Dr. Pat Payne, Ed and Nancy Maynard, and Guide graduate Delores Nash helped KSDS staffer Marcia Funke educate the public about the important work of KSDS. KSDS received donations and sold some merchandise from the KSDS Gift Shop. Puppy in training, Barstow, gets some love from a girl attending the Community Fair. Volunteers make KSDS Special KSDS is a top-notch assistance dog training facility due in large part to its volunteers KSDS is extremely proud of our volunteers. We know we owe a huge debt of gratitude to everyone that helps makes KSDS successful. Every year, we are overwhelmed by all the ways volunteers help out. This past year, volunteers helped put inserts and address labels on the newsletter. They also helped paint trim on the administration building, canine housing unit, and training center. Other volunteers helped by taking down trees and hauling them away from the housing project building site. Many more volunteers helped with information booths at community events, providing programs at schools and other venues and cooking meals for students in class, and of course raising welladjusted puppies for KSDS. When I get that phone call my dog is awaiting me, my heart will jump for joy. Oh, The Places We’ll Go... A dog will help me in my daily life assisting me with doors, retrievals and phones. When I get relaxed in my chair, my arm can fall off the controls. All I need is a little nudge to get my arm back up. My new friend will be that little important nudge to get me upright again. Oh, the Places We’ll Go... Having a spinal cord injury leaves me with a lack of body temperature control. I am always cold and the warmth of a Service Dog will be well received - both physically and emotionally. Oh, the Places We’ll Go... Oh the Places We’ll Go when KSDS rings my phone! Special thanks to Ron Gulick for sharing this heartwarming poem with us. Ron is currently on the waiting list for a KSDS Service Dog. Donating to KSDS today will help us place more assistance dogs for someone like Ron tomorrow. Indy, Guide Dog Workmen are rapidly finishing up much of the interior work on our new duplexes. The next step is to furnish each of the six studio apartment to have it ready for occupancy. Beds, sofas, appliances, televisions, sheets, towels, kitchen accessories and other items are needed. There are six units, so at least six of everything is needed. For some things like sheets and towels, multiples are needed for each unit. We are working with businesses for discounts and buy in quantity. Ron Gulick With your help, we can make the sixplexes just like home for those attending team training Cabernet for a Cause a benefit to support the work of ksds, inc. k Cabernet for a cause committee Brian Hesse Mandi Holsten Kim Kimminau Lisa Rickards Music Provided by Thorpe & McElroy Wine Provided by City Wine Market Photography Provided by Hunter Herndon Mikaela Holsten Michele Schnoebelen Volunteers Marcia Funke Nancy Giossi Brenda Herndon Glenda Keller Annette Metz Midge Miller Letha Nelson Jenna Petesch Merry Roop Audry Rush Anna Schuster Deb Tegethoff Puppy in promo photo (Above) Ventura Raised by Carlin Smith Margaret Mead famously said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Well, if you substitute the words “puppy raisers” for “citizens,” you’ll get a sense of what happened in Lawrence, Kansas, on January 28. It began as just an idea to support KSDS. With a goal of raising $5,000 and working toward increasing awareness of KSDS and it’s mission in the Lawrence/Kansas City area, four volunteer puppy raisers began planning and worked together to secure almost $8,000 in silent auction items and plan a wonderful evening event. The first annual Cabernet for a Cause was a chance to taste fine wine, visit with good friends, eat great food and bid on silent auction items to help KSDS raise funds to place assistance dogs for individuals with disabilities. Over 200 people were greeted with live entertainment provided by Thorpe & McElroy. Puppy raisers, graduates and staff were all in attendance and guests enjoyed meeting them and their canine friends. More than a dozen KSDS puppies-in-training along with many graduates showed everyone how these dogs can handle a crowd, the temptation of a few dropped appetizers and lots of noise while still greeting everyone with a wag or working to assist their partners during the evening. “What can I say,” coorganizer Brian Hesse said, “but that the wine, auction items, dogs, and friends made it a wonderful evening. It truly was a magical evening to benefit KSDS.” With more 70 silent auction items, there was something for everyone. Original art, photography, jewelry, theatre tickets, and Event Sponsors service and activity donations, fine dining coupons and unique services made this event a true reflection of the diverse and dynamic support community that KSDS enjoys. Excellent local media coverage prior to the event helped spread the word about Cabernet for a Cause and led to a number of attendees who came specifically to learn more about the organization. “The evening was quite a success. Not only did we raise funds for KSDS, we introduced the organization to several new people who have become friends and advocates for the organization,” Hesse said. Cabernet for a Cause was the brainchild of volunteer puppy raiser Mandi Holsten, and together with the help of fellow committee members Brian Hesse, Kim Kimminau and Lisa Rickards, this event was a resounding success. Many others assisted in making it an event to remember. Cabernet for a Cause raised over $10,000 to support training and operations at KSDS. Making it all happen were committee members Mandi Holsten (Shelby), Lisa Rickards (Vance), Brian Hesse, and Kim Kimminau. They love dogs and are dedicated to making life better for people with disabilities. The KSDS dog trainer usually starts out as an apprentice learning basic dog care, obedience training, handling skills, understanding canine behavior, and disability awareness. The apprenticeship program is a progressive 3-year program where they learn from our training instructors, the various aspects of the KSDS program as well as the most current in positive training techniques. Much of the first six months are spent in the Canine Housing Unit with the responsibility of learning basic dog care. During this time they began to bond with the dogs to be able to move up to assist with intermediate dog training. Throughout the 3-year program, as skills are mastered and demonstrated the apprentices will be given more responsibilities with dogs and assist with classes and advanced training. Mosa, Social Dog Trainers are also given the opportunity to use their talents in other important parts of KSDS such as our Breeding Program, Client Services, and public presentations. KSDS assists trainers with continuing education classes and sends them to programs and ADI training sessions. At around eight weeks the names of the puppies are announced as they go to homes with their puppy raisers. The puppies become part of the family. They are taken to churches, restaurants, stores, sporting events and even to places of employment, because they need to learn to be in places where their future life partner will go. IT ALL STARTS WITH THE PUPPIES Most of our dogs were born in Washington, Kansas, as the result of our breeding program of golden and Labrador retrievers. The breeders are kept in volunteers’ homes until it is time to bring them back to KSDS. KSDS does accept some donated puppies, but only after careful scrutiny of their lineage. It’s important to have healthy puppies with good temperament and the right type of body build to undergo the specialized training needed to become an assistance dog. Our puppies are born and spend their first two weeks in the whelping room at our Canine Housing Unit. Then they are brought to the public kennel area in the CHU where they continue to receive loving attention by our staff. During the next six weeks they will undergo a series of healthcare and temperament checks. When they are five weeks old, the puppies receive their names. At six weeks, they begin socializing with volunteers, usually children from the local school, to prepare them for their next step in life. During their time with puppy raisers, the puppies are taught to potty on command, learn basic obedience and some intermediate skills and are spayed or neutered. The puppies return to KSDS at about 18 to 20 months of age. This is a time of mixed feelings for our puppy raisers — sorrow at parting with a beloved friend who they have nurtured for many months is mixed with the feeling that this friend will be going on to a higher calling. KSDS tries to temper puppy raisers’ loss with another little fluff ball and the cycle of care and nurturing begins again. On their return, the dogs are taken to the Kansas State University Vet Hospital for hip x-rays and eye testing. Upon passing the tests, the dogs begin more intermediate training and are evaluated for placement and specialized training to be Guide, Service or Social Dogs. The KSDS training staff looks for specific tendencies in each dog to determine in which program the dog should begin. Dogs are not forced to work. Only dogs that show the enthusiasm and necessary skills move on in the program. Occasionally, the dogs cannot continue in the program for health or other reasons. In that case, the dogs are released. Puppy raisers may be given the option to take the dogs back as pets; other released dogs are matched up with people who have requested a career change canine. The dogs that continue in the program are selectively matched for temperament and physical attributes with people who need our specially trained canines. With the recipient’s needs understood, the KSDS staff then specifically trains the dog to fill those needs. After the dog is ready for his new team partner, team training begins. The recipient comes to Washington, Kansas, to begin a new After graduation, KSDS staff provides on-going support to all teams. Did you know? • Currently, 127 KSDS-trained assistance dogs (guide, service, and social) help their partners every day. • To receive a dog from KSDS, individuals must demonstrate the ability to give commands and care for a canine assistant. THE NEW JOB When the team returns to the graduate’s home, there is a period of adjustment. It may take six months to a year for the team to fully bond and work well with each other. Social dogs go with their partners into schools, clinics and nursing homes to help their partners help clients or patients. The dogs can provide a calming influence or encouragement to assist the professional worker. Service dogs retrieve dropped items, turn lights on and off, tug open doors and drawers, pull manual wheelchairs, brace for transfers, help balance if their partners when walking, pull up covers and help their partners dress and undress. Guide dogs become the eyes for their partners, helping them safely from one place to another, showing them curbs and steps, watching for obstacles and overhangs, and exhibiting “intelligent disobedience” by not letting their partners step out into traffic. • There are active KSDS working dogs in 32 states and active KSDS puppy raisers in 13 states. • The youngest person to receive an assistance dog from KSDS was 7 years of age and the oldest was 83. • A KSDS guide dog trainer walks approximately 2,000 miles per year while training dogs on routes. • On average, a KSDS assistance dog can work for 7-10 years with their partner before retiring. • KSDS was the first organization in the United States to train guide dogs and service dogs at the same facility. • The Americans with Disabilities Act provides public access to all guide dogs and service dogs. • Many puppy raisers and graduates are available to give presentations to civic and school groups about assistance dogs and KSDS. Contact KSDS to find out more or schedule a presentation today. Beau, Guide Dog OFF TO COLLEGE AT KSDS Shelby, Puppy in Training independent life with his canine.
