Mistletoe and Pepto are proud parents of
the Flower litter born on September 19,
2009. Seven healthy, yellow Labrador
Retrievers complete this family. The
male puppies were named after flowering
plants: Cactus, Hawthorn, and Hosta.
The female puppies were named after
flowers: Violet, Aloe, Aster and Lotus.
They went to their puppy raiser families
on November 13. Puppy raisers came
from as far away as Cheyenne, WY to
collect these little bundles of fur.
The Military Litter Send Thanks Across the USA
On November 9th and 10th, Embassy and Hilton gave birth to a
total of 10 black and yellow Labrador Retriever puppies. The proud
papa is Dozer, owned by Chris Mahan. Since the puppies were born
just before Veteran’s Day, they were named for various military
installations across the US and this presented the perfect opportunity
to say thank you to our Veterans and the brave men and women
currently serving our country with a special certificate featuring a
picture of the puppy named after their
installation. The military installations
have shown a keen interest in the future
of their namesakes.

(Continued from page 1)
Dozer is a 3 year old, 103 pound yellow lab.
His full name is Bulldozer Mahan CGC, JH,
CD and he joined the Mahan family at 6
months of age and already 70 pounds. At first,
Dozer really wasn’t that interested in hunting
but enjoyed obedience shows, earning his
CGC and CD titles. Chris worked with Lyle
Steinman for the last year and now Dozer has
turned into a very good hunting partner, able
to do mark and blind retrieves in all kinds
of conditions. Recently, Dozer finished his
Junior Hunter. Chris tries to work both dogs
every couple of days on some type of training
as the weather permits.
All these credentials and health qualifications,
led to a breeding agreement between the
Mahan’s and KSDS. The results have so far
yielded three litters of puppies. A total of
17 beautiful, lively and energetic fur balls.
The four Mahan children have taken a keen

interest in these puppies. They received
pictures from KSDS throughout the puppies
first eight weeks of life in the Canine Housing
Unit - from when they were born to when
they left with their Puppy Raisers.
Chris explained, “Someday, James will decide
that he wants a dog for more independence
and we want to know that a dog will be
available. Maybe it will even be one of Peppy
or Dozer’s pups.”
ASHLEY STEWART
Ashley Stewart is the newest employee
at KSDS, Inc. Ashley, a sophomore at
Washington County High School,

assistant in June of 2009. Ashley is
busy with Future Farmers of America

Members of the FBLA worked with the
Military Litter puppies, teaching them
how to walk on a leash. “What’s NOT to
like about playing with puppies? They are
cute and loveable!” exclaimed Amanda
Talkington.
Washington Lumber donated the paint for
their painting project. Members painted the
kitchen area of the Canine Housing Unit.
“This was my first time painting and I liked
it. It was nice to help make a difference and
learn something at the same time,” said
Bayleigh Bisnette. FBLA leader, Michelle
Bruna, said the students would like to help
with future projects.

“THE REALITY MAGIC
SHOW” FUNDRAISER
The second annual Garry Carson and
Kelsey Kara Magic Show will be held
at the Folly Theater, in Kansas City,
Missouri, on March 21, at 3:00 P.M.
Doors will open at 2:30.
Tickets are only $12.50 each, and all
ticket sales will benefit KSDS, Inc.
Garry Carson has a heart for charitable
causes and has performed for many
fundraising events. Garry combines
his magical talents with his partner and
wife, Kelsey. A former Miss Nevada,
Kelsey has been singing and dancing
since the age of three.
A special thanks to Assistance Dogs
International (ADI) Accredited Organization,
Dogs for the Deaf in Medford, Oregon for
the help with KSDS graduate Nancy Doll and
her service dog Mac. Nancy was hospitalized
for a long period of time and unable to care
for her service dog. KSDS contacted Robin
Dickson, CEO of Dogs for the Deaf about
the possibility of a volunteer that could help
with Mac. While waiting for a volunteer to
be found, Mac was generously taken in by
Dawna Carroll, whose son Johnathan has
KSDS service dog, Regent. Dawna was able
to pick up Mac and keep him for a short time,
taking him to the hospital to visit Nancy, but
due to “housing codes” could not keep him
more than two days. Norm & Sue Etling,
volunteers for Dogs for the Deaf contacted
KSDS stating they would be glad to help

Nancy with Mac. They went to meet Nancy to
receive instructions on Mac’s care then picked
him up from Dawna. Nancy was relieved to
have Mac in a home where he could run and
play but also glad that Sue brought him to
visit at the hospital. Once Nancy was released,
Mac was returned but the friendship between
Nancy and Sue has remained.
SIXPLEX FUNDING NEEDED
AND TAX CREDITS AVAILABLE
After traveling and performing for four
years as a singer and dancer on a world
tour of Legends in concert, she returned
to Las Vegas to work with Garry in the
production of his show at the MGM
Grand Hotel and Casino. They were
voted Las Vegas’s #1 Family Attraction
for two years running. Their show is
family focused and includes grand
illusions, exotic animals, comedy magic
and audience participation.
KSDS, Inc. plans to build a sixplex accessible
housing facility on Railroad Avenue, near
the training building. Such accommodations
would include cooking and laundry
facilities in addition to a handicap accessible
bathroom and roll-in shower. The total
project’s estimated cost is $600,000.00.
Come and enjoy a great show on a
Sunday afternoon, and support KSDS
at the same time!
KSDS was awarded tax credits in September,
2009, from the Kansas Department of
Commerce, in the amount of $250,000.
These tax credits were available for 2009, and
are now available for this year. The program
will end December 31, 2010. The potential
donations to KSDS, if all the tax credits are
used, is a little over $357,000.
A bus has been chartered for this show
in Kansas City, and will depart KSDS
at 11:00 A.M. on March 21st. Cost is
$40 and includes the bus transportation
and your ticket to the show. Seating is
limited to 55 passengers. For tickets or
more information, call KSDS.
Ashkesh, Social Dog
Donors may participate in the tax credit
program by making a contribution of at least
$250.00 to KSDS, Inc. The paperwork is
sent in to the State of Kansas, and the donor
receives a 70% credit, to be deducted on
their state income tax return. If the donor
itemizes on their federal income tax, the
entire contribution may be deducted. In
May, 2009, the State of Kansas, reduced the
credit, so the donor may deduct 90% of the
normal value (70% tax credit.) The tax credit
follows a refundable carryover provision.
If the tax credit is greater than tax credit
liability, the tax filer receives a refund.
If a donor wishes to make a major
contribution towards the project, recognition
opportunities would be discussed, or a donor
wall would be used.
Please consider the needs of accessible
housing for KSDS, Inc. and visit with your
tax preparer about this opportunity. It is
worth looking into. For questions, call Marcia
Funke or Judy Sifers, at (785) 325-2256.

Thoughts from a Graduate

Why Donate to KSDS? First you need to
decide what you want your donation to provide.
Do you want to improve a person’s life? Do you
want to add to a person’s self esteem? Do you
want to give a person freedom? Do you want to
provide, love, joy, independence, and the will
to live. If you answered yes to all or even one of
the above then give to KSDS.

I thank God each day for my canine partners
and my KSDS family. I would like to share what
my two partners have been to me. Highlights
with my two Partners include:
Hosta, Puppy in Training
• Madison alerted me that Dad had fallen on
the ice. We (Madison and I) went outside
and Dad used my wheelchair to get himself
up.
• Another time Madison alerted me that
Mother had fallen in the street. Again, we
went outside and Mother was able to use my
chair to get herself up.
• Madison led me to a very small child that
was lost. We went to get the Mother and had
a wonderful reunion.
• With Madison’s assistance I was able to help
my Mother stay in her home following the
death of my Dad. Without Madison, my life
and that of my Mother’s would have been
very different.
• I got Astro following Madison’s death.
With her, I have been able to live by myself.
We have traveled, via plane and van from
Missouri to the East and West Coasts. She
gives me confidence to go and do fun loving
and educational things.
• Astro woke me up in a motel one night
in time for me to leave safely, with smoke
spreading rapidly up the halls. A fire had
started in one of the rooms.
These are unusual helps from my partners.
They both helped me with everyday living
chores. They made getting out of bed, getting
dressed and undressed easier. If you want to
help provide a better life for people, give to
KSDS. Be part of the KSDS family making a
difference in people’s lives.
Thank you for making a difference.
