It’s SUMMER!!!
The kids are out of school. Vacations,
backyard cookouts, and flip-flops are
a matter of course, while the electric
meter spins almost out of control.
Thankfully, both of our summer
shows, Big Kahuna and Heat Is On,
will be held in A/C comfort! We still
need volunteers to help with those
shows. Can you ring steward or gate
keep for one or two classes? Your
help will be greatly appreciated. Contact Pat Pierce for Big Kahuna help, or
Jarilyn Pusz for Heat is On help!
I have learned a few things from my
dogs over the years on staying cool
during our summer heat:

Whenever possible, lay on top of
the A/C vent so that all the cool
air blows only on your tummy and
nowhere else in the house.

Kids wading pools, stock tanks,
and large water buckets are perfect places to lounge.

A creek, stream, or ditch are
wonderful places to splash/dig!

Seriously…well, no, maybe not so
seriously, the above are some of the
things my dogs do to keep themselves cool in the summer, and I
really think these are some of the
thoughts that go through their heads.
But, for the most part they’re right.
Got a kids pool and a lawn chair?
They work great together (close your
eyes and you’re at the beach?). And
when was the last time you played in

never too old for that! Just don’t forget the sunscreen!

Secretary Report
This report details the day to day
discussions among the members of
the GAASC board of directors. This
will not in the normal old business—
new business format as those lines
are a bit fuzzy for me right now..
Wendy provided a list of events that
we could sponsor at the 2011 Nationals. Cheryl mentioned that typically GAASC will sponsor either
one event or multiple events totaling
$500; however, with the economy
we won’t be able to allocate that
kind of money. A decision is still
pending on what event(s) GAASC
will sponsor this year. The sponsorship form must be submitted by August 22, 2011 in order to be included
in the catalogue. If any member
would like to sponsor an event the
link to the site is. http://
www.2011ascanationals.org/
Cheryl proposed we use a vanity
publisher to make a cook book in
order to raise funds at our shows.
Members could purchase spots in
the cookbook to advertise their kennel or just put their dog’s picture in
it. Wendy has committed to back
cover inside and outside.
No other action has been taken regarding this proposal.
Jarilyn has acquired 30 HSF4 kits
(Hereditary cataracts test) which she
will offer at the Heat is On conformation show this August. Payment
for this test will be required at the
show and if you’re unsure how to
acquire the sample, then I’m sure
Jarilyn will help. Hereditary cataracts is the leading eye malady that
our Aussies suffer from, so let’s do
our part to eliminate it from the gene
pool. If you’re interested please
contact Jarilyn.
Wendy wants a show schedule for
our 2012 shows. There has been
much discussion about reducing the
number of show in 2012; not so
much due to the economy, but the
fact that volunteers to chair and
work these shows are scarce. Also,
AKC seems to be hosting shows
almost every weekend in the area
which is leading to scheduling conflicts. There’s been no final decisions made on the 2012 schedule,
but it appears that the Paw Thaw
show is on the chopping block or at
least rolled into the Early Thaw agility show.
Cheryl suggested that if we cannot
find a location to run agility trials
and recruit volunteers to run an agility trial, then we should sell the
equipment and trailer.
Jarilyn suggest that we make the
schedule through March 2012 and
then revisit since information on
AKC schedules aren’t available for
later in the year.
We all agree that scheduling events
opposite any area AKC show is a
recipe for disaster.
Wendy proposed that we include
paid fun runs and a jackpot trial be
included in the 2011 Georgia Jubilee
show. This will run after the farm
trials on Friday November 4th.
Cheryl suggested that we might
want to reconsider the price structure
for altered conformation dogs and
bitches. The costs for judging and
prizes are identical for intact dogs
and the breeders obtain HOF points,
so why shouldn’t the entry fee be the
same? Jarilyn mentioned that some
other clubs in the south east are increasing their entry fee for altered
conformation. Gia maintains that
our current price structure is the reason we have had success in fielding
enough altered dogs to have 5 point
majors. For the time being the board
has decided to leave the price for
altered conformation entries unchanged.
Wendy has ask me to briefly describe the rules concerning LEP registered dogs and their eligibility for
the ASCA finals and other ASCA
awards. At this time the only performance venue that prohibits LEP
registered dogs at the ASCA finals is
the Stock Dog venue and of course
conformation. LEP registered dogs
are not eligible to obtain a VCH
(Versatility Champion) or SVCH
(Supreme VCH) since this requires a
champion title in conformation;
however they may obtain the PCH
(Performance Champion) or SPCH
(Supreme PCH) title. LEP registered dogs are in every other aspect
the same as fully registered Aussies
with respect to Nationals qualification and end of year merit points.
The rule change by the SDC was a
real hot spot for me; some of you
may have read my post on ASCA-L

First In Flight ASC May trial report from Spooky and Magic
Magic:
Oh boy oh boy oh boy, I got to go play Rally and Obedience and
Rally and wiggle, and
meet lots of fun people
and fun dogs, including
a 12 year old Dobie with
wheels, who got to practice on the Rally courses
after the trials were
done. And she was lots
of fun to play with, too!
I've only met one other
dog with wheels; this
one was very sweet, and
smart, and I sure hope
she lives for a long time
til she's ready to cross
over on the Rainbow Bridge. I also got to trial with my Uncle Bug, who
is Spooky's littermate brother. And I got a different colored green ribbon than he did, too.
My Mama says that working with me is like handling lit fireworks, as she's never sure when I'm going to explode (tee hee). I
earned my shiny new ASCA Rally Novice C title under Judge Tom
Savarese; we think I'm the first dog in ASCA history to earn the title. I
also cranked out a 2nd, a 1st with an XQ, and a 4th in Rally Advanced, to
earn that title under Judge Nancy Watson. I had too much fun in the
Obedience trials to earn any green ribbons. It's just too hard to stand
still when I'd rather kiss the Judge for tickling me. And Spooky told me
on the sly, that if I REALLY want to get Mama's goat, I should go down
on the Long Sit, which I did, besides singing my discomfort at having to stay still for four whole minutes in a lineup of
strangers.
Mama tried to trick us at the hotel room. She MADE us get up on the BED! She NEVER allows that at home;
Spooky told me it was a proofing opportunity, but I just knew I'd get in trouble if I stayed up there. We both couldn't
handle the anticipation of what we KNEW was coming, so after about 10 minutes, we hopped down to the safe floor.
Spooky:
I could tell Mama was both happy and sad this weekend. We
showed a LOT (8 times in the ring plus 2 rounds of Open sits and
Downs on Saturday, 4 times on Sunday), and I collected a gigantic pile
of ribbons. I finished my Rally Excellent X title, I earned 4 Rally Excellent Masters legs (3 as the required double XQ's for the Rally Excellent
Masters X title), 4 High Combineds, 4 High Scoring Aussies, and 3 High
In Trials. I only placed 2nd in one trial appearance all weekend! I took
two 1st places in Open B, and earned 9 more OTCH points for 82 total.
But I made some NQ mistakes in Utility, which meant I couldn't come
home with either my UDX or my OTCH titles. I think that's why Mama
was sad for a while.
I haven't been to a local ASCA show where nearly all the dogs
are tailless wonders, even since Nationals. Magic and I got to see
some “fluffy” Pembroke Corgis; we think they are cute, even if they
aren't allowed by their Breed Standard. And some of the toughest competition we had came from a All-American dog, who gets to play in both
UKC and APDT Obedience and Rally. We'd both like to come back and
play with the folks at this club, in the future. Good trial, fun and friendly
atmosphere, and several hard-working people who always had smiles
on their faces - and best of all, they gave every dog who entered a
yummy big “Q” dog biscuit as the only guaranteed Q for the weekend.
Page 11
2011 Affiliate Report:
To say the 2010-11 year has been busy for GAASC would be an understatement. We hosted 27 Conformation shows, 10 Obedience
trials, 10 Rally trials, 8 Stock Trials, 2 Farm trials, a Ranch Trial, health clinics for MDR1, HSF4 cataracts, and an eye clinic, a grooming seminar, and a special handling seminar for folks new to conformation handling. Club Member Jarilyn Pusz organized a gigantic
fundraising raffle as part of our annual Toys for Tots benefit shows, getting donations from 18 different businesses for $805 in raffle
and silent auction donations, for a total of $1298 for the Marines and Toys for Tots. Our Big Kahuna IV event last July hosted the
first-ever ASCA Rally trials in Georgia, and once again netted the largest ASCA Obedience entries in the country for any trial not associated with the National Specialty. We are once again on the doorstep of another Big Kahuna, and looking forward to exceeding even
2010's entry numbers.
This year, GAASC presented special Year End Awards to club members who had amassed the greatest number of points

YA-HOO! WE MADE IT!
All my calculations after the first In Flight Obedience trials indicated Spooky and I had 18 points left in our Big Title Quest. The first
clues to my inability to add came when I saw Spooky's name listed with the magical OTCH prefix, on the SuperDog Merit list from the ASCA
web site. I was stunned – but took pencil, and later calculator in hand, pulled up his record, and started adding. Again. And again. If I
started with the oldest points and added to the newest ones, I came up with 82 points. But if I started with the newest ones and worked
backwards, lo and behold – we had earned 100.5 OTCH points, and our ASCA Obedience Trial Champion title.
I knew it was real when the blue shiny pebble finished OTCH certificate appeared in the mail. But I still couldn't believe it! We'd
earned the title I'd worked towards for seven years, without even realizing we'd achieved our goal. We reached the summit of our Mount
Everest and came down, without knowing we'd actually made it all the way to the top. At the show, we didn't take any photos of our Open B
wins. No judge holding ribbons looking at the dog, handler looking like a Cheshire Cat, and Spooky wondering when the stupid camera would
stop flashing and making him see spots.....
But I did make a fun Rice Krispie Treat giant cookie, to share with the trainers and students at ADOG. It's the same little cartoon

I actually managed to take my Novice A dog, the first dog I've ever owned in my entire life, from Novice A to an Obedience Trial
Championship! Janet Kelly said that her amazing dog Spice was also her Novice A dog. When we first met Spice at the very first Big Kahuna,
I remember telling Spooky I wanted him to “be like Spice!” Wouldn't you know it – he was listening. Good Dog, Spooks.

Rain finished his last show of the ASCA year with a Best of Breed win down in the Florida Panhandle in May. I could not be more proud of my boy and what he has done over the past year. He
was able to earn his AKC Grand Championship, win GAASC High Point Intact Conformation Specials
Dog, and spend most of the year in ASCA’s top 30. Whether he makes it to the Invitational at
ASCA Nationals or not, he’s tops in my book. I’ve never had as much fun showing a dog. Thanks
for a great year Rain!
