FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
Monday, August 15th is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please know that
this year the Assumption is not a Holy Day of Obligation but Mass will be celebrated in honor of Mary
at our normal 6:30am and 8:45am liturgies.
A week from this Monday begins the 2016-2017 school year here at St. Alexander Parish. St. Alexander School is truly a great institution having achieved Blue Ribbon status. Please keep our principal,
staff, teachers, volunteers, and students in your prayers and ask God’s blessings for another successful
year. Not all Catholic parishes have their own school. We should be proud we are able to continue to
support our own independent grammar school which passes on our great Catholic traditions along with a
great education. If you or anyone you know is searching for a pre-school or grade school, please call St.
Alexander School at 708-448-0408 for more information. You cannot beat a Catholic grammar school
education!
Best wishes and good luck to all those parishioners who will be attending high school or university
this fall. May God guide and bless you throughout the entire year. Wherever you go, please remember to
attend Church every Sunday. Most colleges and universities have Catholic Newman Centers or a local
parish nearby. Contact your school’s Student Services Department for information.
In several weeks, our parish Religious Education Program for the 2016-2017 school year will begin.
We are in need of new catechists to teach our R.E. students in the Catholic faith and help several grades
prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation. I ask everyone to
please consider becoming a catechist in our program. If you feel you are not qualified, don’t worry, we
will train you. Being a catechist is a great way to share your faith with the youth of our parish who are
the future of the Roman Catholic Church. Please pray and let the Holy Spirit guide you as you make
your decision. If you have any questions, please call Deacon Tim Keating or Nancy Cook in the Religious Education office at 708-448-6624.
Many times throughout the year you will notice the initials RCIA mentioned in the bulletin. RCIA
stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is a program designed for adults who are interested in joining the Catholic faith. The RCIA program also helps those who are in need of sacraments. This
program is geared to those who have never been baptized, those who were baptized in another faith or
those who are in need of the sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist or Confirmation. This year’s
RCIA classes will begin in September and conclude a few weeks after the Easter Vigil in 2016. If you or
anyone you know is interested in joining the Catholic faith or need to receive any sacraments, please
contact our RCIA directors, Deacon Tim Keating or Deacon Jim Horton at 708-448-4861.
Please remember our Parish Golf Outing & Barbecue is Saturday, September 17th at George Dunne
National Golf Course in Oak Forest. The proceeds of this parish outing are split between the athletic
program and parish. This would be a great reason to spend the afternoon on the golf course. Even if you
don’t golf, come out to the barbecue and enjoy an evening with fellow parishioners. If you are unable to
attend this year, please consider sponsoring a hole. Sponsorship and ticket information can be found on
page ten of this bulletin.
God Bless,
Father Marty

SCRIPTURE
REFLECTION
Today's responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain "Here am I, Lord." This
"Here am I" is Jeremiah's great prophetic response
to God's call. But today's story of Jeremiah and the
refrain "Lord, come to my aid!" remind us that
there are always two sides to following the call of
God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew
this, too. He reminded his readers that even
weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still
persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who
himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but
saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the
throne of God.
Jesus himself gave the disciples a "sneak preview"
of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the
one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but
would be one of fire and anguish. Today's words
from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in
their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the
difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort
in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ.
