New Livestream Service Helps Family Separated by 300 Miles Worship Together by Kathleen Gilbert My mom lives over 300 miles away from Fort Worth. She is the primary caretaker of her 96 year-old mother, and both of them are tied to the house—my grandmother because she isn’t very mobile anymore and my mom because my grandmother depends on her. One of the things they both miss is attending church every Sunday. They tried watching services on one of the local T.V. stations, but those broadcasts always cut off early and they miss a lot of the music, which both of them enjoy. When I heard that our church was going to live stream our 11 a.m. service, I told my mom about it. She figured out how to access the service on her laptop, and she puts it up on the large screen television in the living room so my grandmother can see it. And now both my mom and my grandmother worship with us on Sunday mornings. In preparation, Mom prints out the bulletin and the scripture in large type as well as all the words to the hymns. Mom even figured out exactly where in the sanctuary I need to sit so they can see me! My mom has mentioned several times how much my grandmother looks forward to “going to church.” She is ready early on Sunday morning, in front of the T.V. humming and singing along with the choir. I call them right after the service is over so we can discuss the sermon and sometimes during the week, Mom plays the hymns again on the piano so they can both sing. I cannot describe what it means to the three of us to be able to worship together on Sunday mornings as a family. It makes me feel close to family I dearly love, and it makes my mom and grandmother feel like part of a congregation again. What a blessing! August 2015 521 W. Pipeline Rd. Hurst, TX 76053 Rite Start for Adopt-A-School Ministry No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship. –Dr. James Comer Mentoring You are important and I care what happens to you. There are a thousand ways to express this message. Yet the message remains the same. Mentors are kind, concerned adults-young and old and from all walks of life - who offer youth caring support, guidance, and encouragement. Mentors provide the sustained presence of a positive, adult role model; yet, they are more than simply an older friend. A mentor, drawing from their own life experiences, with a genuine concern for the youth, offers support and guidance to the youth as they navigate through the everyday challenges of school, society, and their community. Although the specific roles of mentors vary, every good mentor does two things: makes a connection and uses that connection to convey a positive message and build a trusted relationship. On our three Adopt-A-School campuses, Bellaire Elementary, Harrison Lane Elementary and Hurst Jr. High mentors usually volunteer once a week for one hour. For more information contact Vicky Robertson 817.282.0949. Their students come from the neighborhood surrounding First United Methodist Church of Hurst. Once affluent apartments are now all-bills-paid locations. There is also a burgeoning need for increased community services to support the materially poor who • Selecting a school that you will serve as liaison: Bellaire Elementary, Harrison Lane Elementary, or Hurst Junior High • Maintaining frequent contact with the principals, counselors, and staff of your Adopt-ASchool in person or by phone to keep our program coordinator, congregation, and staff aware of physical, mentoring or pastoral needs on that campus • Periodically delivering church publications, staff care gifts, and student supplies to that campus Leadership- Campus Liaison First United Methodist Church of Hurst is blessed with a significant number of dedicated educators who have served our community. Over the past years, under the strong leadership of Vicky Robertson, this church’s AdoptA-School Ministry has expanded to three local schools. As this ministry expands, so does the need for additional personnel to help this church enhance its ministry with these local schools. A search is underway for at least three individuals who would be willing Adopt-A-School Supply Drive A conversation with a teacher from one of our Adopt-A-Schools is quite revealing. Each year they are given the task of teaching a group of children with limited district monies allotted for individual school supplies. They love their students like their own children. They have the ardent desire to see their class excel, and they are under pressure to make sure all children pass the STAAR standardized test. to be a Campus Liaison. The Campus Liaison role entails: live here. Children do not show up to school with new clothes. Rather, because of their parents’ lack of finances, they have been dressed with shoes that are two sizes too small and go to the school nurse looking for help. The fresh smell of crayons and construction paper does not fill a backpack for these kids. On the contrary, a grandmother, who stepped in to keep Child Protective Services away six weeks into the school year, sends her grandchild to school with no school supplies because her government assistance check is not enough to cover the added cost. Also, it is commonplace for a child to change schools during the semester and show up with no supplies. The teacher explains how important it is for students to have the tools necessary to make them successful. These donations make them feel that they are not alone, that they are truly supported by this church. We will be collecting supplies beginning August 2 and will bless these supplies in worship as • Taking opportunities to be present at school events when possible • Meeting with the program coordinator and other staff liaisons periodically to share ideas and collaborate. Your presence on a school campus will continue to help bridge this congregation’s presence into our surrounding community. If you are interested in this ministry opportunity, please contact with Rev. Clint Jones 817.682.7956 or [email protected]. they are sent forth on August 23 on Rite Start Sunday. You may bring the supplies to the Atrium. Following are the supplies that are needed. Young Adults Ministry Adopts New Name The New Adults (ages 18-25) are changing their name to 6:19. Through many conversations, we have discovered that the name “New Adults”, is very confusing. What six does that name even mean? In the past, it has meant those who are fresh out of high school and starting college; however, many that are in college would not consider themselves to be in that category. Therefore the decision has been made to change the name of the “New Adults” to “6:19”. We find meaning in our new name from Hebrews 6:19, which says, “We have this hope as an anchor for our lives, safe and secure.” This verse is a statement of our faith as we transition through this life-defining time. As young adults make decisions about their lives, whether it be regarding work or school, we have our hope in Christ that grounds us. We are excited about this transition in ministry where our new name will stand as a reminder to us during changing times. 6:19 is going to Passion! In this story, Erick recounts how Jill, now three years old, has been making a difference for Jesus by starting a lifetime of service to others. “When Jill was about six weeks old, I realized that she could sleep at Mission Central just as well as she could at home. I decided to take her with me with a hope that some of Jill’s first memories would be of helping others. She has been going to Mission Central almost every Monday of her life and she has been helping there since she learned to walk. The people at Mission Central have become her family. She genuinely enjoys seeing Paula, Lee, Catherine, Phyllis, and Miss Diane. In any setting, she’s always loved to help. At first, she really enjoyed moving boxes from one place to another. Honestly, it helped her learn how to walk. As she became older, the tasks that she chose Just shy of 3-years old, Jill helps Ms. Maggie in the pantry. to do changed. They went from moving boxes to stocking bread to stocking toilet paper, soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes. She has packed bags of candy, helped stock refrigerators, thrown away trash, and many other tasks. Usually after these things, she sits and talks with Paula or Catherine and colors or types “letters” for her mom. her third birthday, on a random Thursday we were driving through Bedford. She told me that she wanted to visit Mission Central. I asked her why and her response caught me off guard. I really thought that she was going to say, “So I can see Paula,” or “So I can play with Lee.” Her response was actually, “So I can help the people.” We are called to be servants and we are made in God’s image. I realize that I have a very special daughter and she proves that to me every week. I believe that she understands why we do what we do. Shortly after 3 1/2 year-old Jill helping Ms. Phyllis sort food. Jesus was constantly involved in helping those who were hungry and in need. In following Christ’s commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves, First United Methodist Church of Hurst will be focusing on work that is being done toward abolishing hunger in our community from mid-August through mid-September as part of the Central Texas Annual Conference’s Serve! Project. You are asked to participate in one or both of the following ways: food, recipients have forged friendships with volunteers and other assistance recipients. along with a shopping list of grocery items. An Eldercare Resources Fair September 20, 2015 2-4 p.m. • Fellowship Hall None of us want to admit it, and we sure don’t want to talk about it. We can pretend it’s not happening, but sooner or later, we all have to face it. WE ARE ALL AGING! We can live in denial, but if we do, we will probably find ourselves unprepared for the challenges that lie ahead. The nice thing is, we have another choice. We can OWN IT! If we decide to own it, we put ourselves on a proactive rather than reactive path. We can choose to be prepared to deal with the issues we might face as we age rather than wait until we are in the heat of the moment and in no shape to decide for our loved ones or ourselves. So, let’s REALLY OWN THIS! Join us for the fun as we take a look at what we can do to be ready, how we can help each other and what resources are available. Some of the presenters include • Alzheimer’s Association • Senior Citizen Services of Tarrant County • Texas Health Resources • Area Agency on Aging • Hurst Senior Activities Center • Mid-Cities Care Corps • Medico MD Bishop’s Bible Camp for Adults with Bishop Mike Lowry Saturday, September 19, 2015 • Glen Lake Camp & Retreat Center 9 a.m. Check In • 9:30-3:30 p.m. Bible Study Cost: $10 (includes lunch and study guide) Study Focus: Romans Everyone’s Study Guide by N.T. When we hear how others are making strides, often we are encouraged and motivated to do something new and different in our own lives. Recently, I heard about some new things that are happening in the Point of Grace Sunday School Class and I have to share. In June, Kathleen Gilbert introduced the class to “Life Together” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The lesson on prayer was very powerful and as a class they decided to pray each night at a designated time. A great study for all Christians, but particularly beneficial for persons who want to begin an intentional journey with Jesus. • DISCIPLE I This is a long-term (34 weeks) study that gives the Old and New Testament equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God. • DISCIPLE II This long-term (32 weeks) study, a follow-up to DISCIPLE I, focuses on Genesis-Exodus and Luke-Acts. Like the other studies in the series, DISCIPLE II draws upon scholarly work, reading and study, as well as weekly group discussion. • Invitation to John In this short-term (11 weeks) study, travel into the scripture as you hear the Word, experience the grand artwork connected with each story, and listen to interviews with scholars. Participants do not have to have an in-depth knowledge of the *Indicates baptism Christian and Lindsey Teague with Cotter* The class members say that although this practice is still new for them, it is working well, that their shared prayer time has fostered a closer relationship with God and each other. Most people, they say, have set alarms to help remind them to stop and pray, but agree that alarms may eventually become unnecessary. Too often, I think, we hear a great lesson or sermon or have a deep discussion at church that stays with us only as long as the drive home. But the Point of Grace Class, through the work of the Holy Spirit, chose to allow what they had learned to disrupt their routine and change their habits. More importantly, they chose to hold each other accountable. That’s how transformation happens. Thank you, Point of Grace, for sharing this story. And, by the way, it’s not bragging!! Class Description—“Nurturing each other as we journey in faith together, Point of Grace is a Christian group of women with diverse backgrounds and faith stories. We are mission minded, hopeful, and we enjoy learning. Through socials, monthly luncheons and mission projects, we stay connected outside Sunday School and worship.” For more information about the Point of Grace Class, see the church website. Join Scout, Atticus Finch, Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson in this four-week study considering God’s world and what it all means. • Renegade Gospe by Mike Slaughter Jesus didn’t come to start a religion. Gonzalez Beginning with the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century, this second volume of “The Story of Christianity” continues narrative history to the present. This UMW-sponsored study brings into balance the inner and outer dimensions of the Christian life. Organized around four verbs: pray, learn, mentor, and transform, the book is a challenge to become a more vibrant disciple of Christ. • Exercising the Body and Soul This 8-week program will pair walking/running with the Beth Moore study, Stepping Up: A Journey Through the Psalms of Ascent. While exploring the psalms, participants will discuss the themes of unity, joy, gratitude, redemption, repentance, the power of blessings, and facing ridicule. • Prayer by Timothy Keller This study will introduce ways to make prayers more personal and powerful, and how to establish a practice of prayer that works for each reader. Keller offers biblical guidance, as well as specific prayers for certain situations, such as dealing with grief, loss, love, and forgiveness.
