The Beacon
June 11/12, 2016
Welcome to Shalimar UMC
We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing
assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher
to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family
Life Center Gym between worship services.
Our Vision
Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant
ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.
Our Mission
REACH, TEACH, and SEND
We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH
the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members
and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal
life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Worship Services
Break Free
NEW! Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 in the Family Life
Center opening with a gathering and fellowship time at 5:30 pm. This
transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style
of preaching that is practical and participatory.
Traditions
At 8:00 and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through
the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano,
seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir
leads the 11:00 service.
Connect
At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service
of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle
stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of
contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns.
Freedom
At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship
through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a
non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the
freedom of not having to stay that way.

“Shalimar United Methodist Church
Celebrates 65th Birthday!”
This week, marks 65 years since Rev. John Lane first
convened worship to form a new church in the Drive Inn
Theater concession stand. Who would have imagined the
impact Shalimar United Methodist would have reached
from such humble beginnings? Best of all Shalimar has a
wonderful past, a vital present, and a hopeful future!
My life has been blessed by serving Shalimar United
Methodist twice. Thirty years ago, I was privileged to serve here as
Associate Pastor from 1983-86. Almost two years ago, I was appointed as
Lead Pastor. Some things have not changed at all in thirty years. There are
some dear members who sit in the same places! Tell the same stories!
Look at their watches at the exact same time they did thirty years ago!
God bless them for enduring me a second time.
Seriously, God has blessed Shalimar United Methodist Church! Generations
have come to know Jesus through Shalimar United Methodist Church.
Countless saints have gone on to their reward to be with Jesus. Thousands
upon thousands have worshipped at Shalimar though the years. Significant
Kingdom work has happened and God has always provided resources and
the people to do what was needed at the time. Shalimar UMC has offered a
beacon of hope for thousands involved in military service in both times of
war and peace. In fact, our current Sanctuary scheduled the first service a
day early on Saturday to give thanks for the end of the Vietnam War.
Through these past sixty-five years, thousands of dear people have made
Shalimar their church home. Amazingly, God has always blessed Shalimar to
retool for ministry to be relevant for every generation for over half a
century. There have been points of consistency. We have lifted up the
name of Jesus and the cross is our highest focal point. Shalimar has always
strived to fulfill our responsibilities with our connection in the United
Methodist Church. The Methodist cross and flame is clearly displayed as a
part of our United Methodist identity and heritage. Shalimar has always
provided dynamic music, youth, and children’s programs for our church and
region. We seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ through living into our
vision of Christ centered, multigenerational, family, and community
relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.” Shalimar
has always moved forward with hope, trusting that the best in ministry is
yet to come!
As we celebrate our history, may we recommit ourselves to be fully the
church God envisions now! Thank you for all you are doing to make a
difference for Jesus Christ in the present age! Let us move forward trusting
God into the future. May we join in with God in His vision for Shalimar UMC!
Happy 65th Shalimar! May Shalimar continue to be blessed and favored for
the Glory of God.
Shalom,
Philip

Lunch is our treat!
We invite you to an informal gathering over a meal to answer
questions about what we believe, where you are
on your journey with God, and what your Next Step
might be. Whether you’re new to Shalimar UMC or
you’ve been attending awhile, it’s always a good
time to think about next steps.

Read Romans 8:14-16
Pastoral Thoughts:
I believe the greatest thing I can ever know is that I am a child of God and loved by
Him. While this is the fifth message in our “Identity Theft” series, I believe it is the
most foundational part of our true identity. I am Abba’s child. God the Father
created me and knows me better than I can know myself. He revealed the depth of
His love for me by sending His only Son, Jesus Christ. Through Jesus, the only Son, I
have been adopted so that I too can be God’s son. He has given me His very DNA,
the Holy Spirit, to be with me and in me to restore the image of the Father in
which I was created. The word “adoption” which appears in Romans 8:14-16 refers
to the full legal standing of an adopted male heir in Roman culture. In his IVP Bible
Background Commentary on the New Testament, Craig Keener writes, “Roman
adoption—which could take place at any age—canceled all previous debts and
relationships, defining the new son wholly in terms of his new relationship to his
father, whose heir he thus became.” So, our adoption as God’s children through
Christ means all spiritual debts are cancelled, we are reconciled to the God who
made us, all other relationships are redefined, and we become heirs of all God has.
Well…I’ll spend the rest of the day enjoying the fact that I can’t ask for more than
that. That, brothers and sisters, is such good news.
Reflect and Discuss:

Describe the kind of relationship you had with your parents growing up.

What about your parents or the people that raised you did you treasure most?
How has this impacted your identity, the person you are today?

What are the children of God led by? (Romans 8:14)

Romans 8:15 tells us the Spirit does not make us “slaves so that we live in fear
again.” Can you think of a story in the Bible where God’s children lived as
slaves and in fear and God delivered them?

Read John 14:15-21. What does Jesus promise to do so that we are not left as
orphans? Who helps us relate to God the Father as His children?

Now read John 14:25-27. What will the Advocate do?

How does knowing you are a child of God change your identity? What lies does
it combat? How does it cause us to view ourselves, life, and others differently?

I want you to try an exercise. Sometimes parents and children simply need to
express their love for one another. It affirms and assures and results in feelings
of safety and security. Spend a few minutes in solitude. For 2 minutes, simply
receive the Father’s love. Think of how much He loves you, how the Bible says
He feels about you, and what He has done for you. Then, spend 2 minutes
giving love back to the Father. Tell Him why He is worthy of your love. If
you’re comfortable with it, share with your group what this experience was like
for you.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Shalimar UMC!
Shalimar UMC will celebrate its 65th birthday on June 17th this year; and as
we reach this milestone, it is good to look back over the years … from whence
we cometh!! Our special history began in the concession room of the Florida
Drive-in Theater, where the FLC is now.
Rev. John Lane was the acting pastor for the new congregation which began
with about 20 folks. Charter Member Sunday was held on June 24, 1951, with
12 members formally joining the new church. Rev. William Bruner became
the first full time pastor in June, 1952.The church budget that year was
$10,000.
On land donated by Clifford Meigs, our first sanctuary was completed in 1952.
By 1953 church membership had grown to 46. By 1964, church membership
had grown to 552.
A church parsonage was built on Meigs Drive in 1966, currently the home of
Pastor Jonathan and Liz Hart.
In 1967, the two story building containing office and Sunday school rooms was
added to the campus.
As Shalimar and membership grew, the need for a larger church resulted in
completion of a new sanctuary in 1973. By that time, SUMC church
membership had soared to 1100. The church budget at that time was
$145,000. The Mass Rowe Carillon system was added to the church at this
same time, it’s “call to worship” adding to the flavor of the town of Shalimar.
By the way, the original sanctuary became a fellowship hall, complete with
kitchen facilities. That same building is now the music suite.
Our Family Life Center became a reality in 1996, and with it came many
opportunities to be a “beacon” throughout the community!
And speaking of beacons, our first Beacon newsletter was issued in 1981!
To date, SUMC has had 14 senior pastors and many associates, including our
own senior pastor Philip, who cut his “ministerial teeth” as our church’s
associate 1982-1985!
The life of SUMC has been one of consistent growth and outreach as we
continue to “Reach, Teach, and Send.”
HAPPY, HAPPY 65TH BIRTHDAY, SUMC!!!

New Volunteer Opportunity
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who
proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion,
"Your God reigns!" (Isaiah 52:7).
Our local mission team is looking for volunteers to help with a special new
ministry to address poverty in the Shalimar community. If you have a heart
for people and would like to work as an encourager, champion, and
cheerleader to transform lives, contact Pastor Brian - 651-0721, Michelle
Carmical - 217-0391, or Robin Baugh - 240-4636.
Volunteers Needed
Do you have a servant’s heart to assist Shut-In's?
A Shut-In is a person(s) unable to get out of
his/her home for daily sustenance. SUMC along
with the Council on Aging provides meals once
a week to our seniors who are housebound. If
you have a couple of hours to spare, once a
month, please contact us for more information
regarding this quiet, humbling, and soul-gratifying ministry. Looking forward
to hearing from you! Please call Nancy O'Brien at 651-3002 or Casey Brennan
at 651-6268 for more information.
Jack and Polly Wilson, Shalimar supported missionaries from North Africa,
have returned to the United States for a visit. They will speak to us about
their mission work on Sunday, June 12th at the 9:30 am hour in the FLC
gym. They have been supported through our Mission budget and by the
Christian Friends Sunday School class for many years. Come listen and
fellowship with them as they share their family’s stories from the mission
field. They serve with Youth for Christ.
Holly Fair Missions
For 20 years the Holly Fair has been supporting local
missions and ministries. We donate 100% of our
proceeds. We have helped countless numbers of
homeless and needy women, children, and families.
We have a few positions open to serve as we look forward to our 20th year
on October 15, 2016.
Come join our dynamic group of women, men, and youth. We continue to
answer our Lord’s call and serve the people of our community.
