June/July 2014 - Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church
VOLUME 19, ISSUE 4
MAY 2014
CHURCH STAFF Dear Friends in Christ,
Rev. David Richter, Pastor Rev. Abraham Chiramukhathu, CMI, I don’t know whether it is a matter of my vocation and the
Parochial Vicar importance of thinking and speaking on these things, or whethRev. Mr. Tim Cotita, Deacon er the attention we have given them leads me in this way, but
Rev. Msgr. Edmund J. Moore, when I think of June I think of Fathers Day.
Retired in Residence Tess Cash, Secretary Haley Pulliam, Business Manager Barbara Lewis, Bookkeeper Missy McKenzie, Development Dir. Jennifer Sparks, Development Kerri Frantz, Parish School of Religion Pam Givens, Director of Music Ken Vincent, Parish Finance Council Chair Lisa Patrick, JGS School Principal Vaughn Antley Trustees John VanVeckhoven PARISH OFFICE HOURS 8:00 am ‐ 4:00 pm Monday ‐ Friday MASSES Weekend Anticipated: Saturday ‐ 4:30pm Sunday ‐ 8:30am, 11:00am, 5:00pm Nursery for 1‐4 year olds 8:30am and 11:00am Randy Hain, a Catholic author based in Atlanta, writes about
being a father. He brings up, inevitably, all the bad cultural
influences that families must deal with in their homes. Families’
schedules are hectic. Fathers are well-intentioned and can’t do
it all, but they want to be better fathers.
We mean well, he says, but how do we
move from conversation to action? We
may believe that our own fathers did a
good job in raising his sons and daughters,
but we are not raising children in the same
world that we were raised in.
Think of the time spent on TV, exercise, or
other interests. Setting some time for prayer
is possible, and necessary if we are to be
thoughtful men of action.
Understand your true vocation. It is
not our business careers, but being good
husbands and fathers that is our true vocation.
Invest time. Hain paraphrases Scripture scholar Scott
Hahn, who wrote that in our own day, the father

He doesn’t set himself up as a father more
successful than other fathers, but he does
offer recommendations that he believes are most helpful.
First, Randy Hain says, surrender. We are not in charge,
ultimately. St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuits, once said: “Few
souls understand what God would accomplish in them if they
were to abandon themselves unreservedly to him and if they
were to allow his grace to mold them accordingly.”
Proverbs 22:6
and defend Christ as our model for action.
Practice detachment. Don’t be too focused on acquiring
more and better possessions. Mass attendance, charitable
giving, and volunteering strengthen our relationships.
Love your wife. Love her, show her respect, cherish the
role she plays in the family.
In the Lord’s Peace,

Most Catholics don’t
give Pentecost much
thought. It is one of
the most important
feasts of the Church,
but it tends to be misunderstood and unappreciated.
Here are some simple
ways to help people
reclaim the significance of Pentecost in
their daily lives:
Read the Story of
Pentecost
Most people can relate to the fear and confusion the apostles experienced after the death,
resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. Pentecost
was a turning point for the apostles. Encourage
your parishioners to read the Pentecost account in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1-47).
Recognize the Gifts of
the Spirit
When the Holy Spirit descended upon the
apostles in the upper room, they received
spiritual gifts that transformed their lives
and gave them the power to touch the
lives of other people.
The Gifts of Spirit are: Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Good Judgment,
Courage, Reverence, and Awe (Isaiah
11:2).
Remind people that they received the same
Gifts of the Spirit during the Sacraments of
Baptism and Confirmation.
Use the Gifts of the
Spirit
A gift is useless unless someone uses it.
Pentecost is a good time to encourage
people to ask the Holy Spirit to help them
make these gifts an important part of their
lives.
Here’s a little prayer to help them focus on
using the Gifts of the Spirit:
Holy Spirit, help me to become a
person of…
Wisdom so that I will live my life in
harmony with your divine will;
Understanding so that I will be a
person of compassion;
Knowledge so that I will be open to
truth and goodness;
Good Judgment so that I will make
choices that reflect your will;
Courage so that I will be able to
stand up for what is right and just;
Reverence so that I will enter into
your divine mystery;
Awe so that I will see the beauty in
all of creation.

Mission Arlington with Grace
Episcopal parishioners will be held at
Grace Episcopal Church on North 4th Street in Monroe on Tuesday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. in Kilbourne

The inaugural Northeast Louisiana SVDP
Society Walk For The Poor will be held
Saturday, September 20 at the St. Frederick’s High School track in Monroe.
The steering committee has recently named the field captains for the event. They will be Carrie and Matt Rocconi,
Christy and Mike Brodtman, and Alicia and Chris Ducote
who will assist in promoting the event and in supervising the walkers.
Andrew and Marsala Trahan have been selected to serve as
Prince and Princess of the First Annual St. Vincent DePaul Society
Walk for the Poor and Co-Grand Marshals are in the process of
being selected from the St. Frederick student body.
Participants in the walk will be asked to secure sponsors to pay
them a certain dollar amount per lap or, alternatively, a flat sum.
Proceeds will be turned over to the SVDP conference (chapter) within
which the participant resides (for example, funds raised by entrants
from Morehouse Parish will go to St. Joseph Church SVDP in
Bastrop).
All students at Jesus the Good Shepherd School, Our Lady of
Fatima School and St. Frederick High School and their parents along
with all other students and residents of Northeast Louisiana are
encouraged to participate either by walking or sponsoring a participant.
Please put the date on your calendar at this time and start thinking about potential sponsors for you and your family members. Also,
your time and treasure is needed to insure that the event is successful. If you can help financially or assist at the track on the day of the
event, please contact J. Randolph (Randy) Smith (387-6496 or 3485609), Kevin Dwyer (953-4626), or Cary Petty (225-892-5701).

interested.

Phil Trahan St. Philip Neri is well
know for three
things: his great holiness, his love for his
cat and his fondness
for jokes. In fact, he
is the patron saint of
humor and joy. Born
in 1515 in Florence,
Italy, he knew that is
wasn’t enough to tell
people not to sin you had to give them
fun things to do instead. For example,
during carnival, to
combat the excesses
of the season, he
organized a 12-mile
pilgrimage to seven
churches, followed by
a picnic and concert.
He once said that if
he could have only
two books, he would
take the Bible and a
joke book! As for the
cat - he was so fond
of it he used to make
his bishop take care
of it when the bishop
sent him on mission
trips! He died on
May 25, the feast of
Corpus Christi, at age
79.
This month, in his
honor, try sharing
jokes at the dinner
table or donating a
bag of cat food to
our local Humane
Society for Cats.
“Cheerfulness
strengthens the
heart and makes
us persevere in a
good life.
Therefore the
servant of God
ought always to
be in good
spirits.
-St. Philip Neri
