How Your Dollars Make A Difference!
NEWS
Your support of our Mobile Spay/Neuter Unit has
helped prevent the birth of tens of thousands of unwanted
kittens and puppies. Since the beginning of 2013, 2,959 cats
and dogs have been spayed or neutered on our mobile unit!
This number is just a part of the over 7,000 wellness visits we
have provided on the unit which includes exams,
inoculations, microchipping SNAP tests and more.
But we need your help. The cost of running
our unit is approximately $10,000.00 per month which
includes salaries, gas, drugs and supplies.

COWTOWN RODEO HORSES SENT TO
SLAUGHTER
PHOTO SUPPLIED
Complaints made to AHS included keeping dogs/pups outside.
Shelters had no hay, no bedding, plastic barrels, dogs chained
to barrels.
Animal lovers saw pictures of animals at a puppy mill that were
kept outside at the Flat Creek Border Collies breeding operation.
Photos showed dogs living outside in the snow with only plastic
barrels to shelter them from the elements. Allegations had been
made concerning two dead dogs. Local authorities stated that
all that is required is food, water & shelter. The Society contacted the Montgomery County SPCA. They seized at least 40 dogs
from the breeder. Six puppies were also surrendered. The Shih
Tzus were badly matted. A judge ruled the adult dogs will be
temporarily removed from the property until their shelter is
renovated. Seventeen pups will be allowed to remain on the
property if they are brought inside when the temperature is
below 32 degrees. We will keep HUMANE NEWS subscribers
informed as the case moves on.
If you know of cruelty, neglect, etc., notify AHS and we will
help by notifying the proper authorities.
On Nov. 11, 2013, the Cowtown Rodeo located in Pilesgrove, NJ sent nine of their
horses to the New Holland horse auction in New Holland, PA. According to reports,
an on-site witness saw the horses purchased by Bruce Rotz, who purchases horses
for human consumption for the Richelieu Slaughter Plant in Quebec, Canada.
Steve Hindi of SHARK (Showing Animals Respect and Kindness) has sent a letter to
Dr. Manoel Tamassia, Director & State Veterinarian for NJ Dept of Agriculture, asking for an investigation of Cowtown for violating NJ’s anti-horse slaughter law.
(Chapter 52). Although rodeos claim horses are like
“family”, the reality is if the horses are unproductive, they will be auctioned off,
possibly for slaughter. Pictures of four of the nine Cowtown horses and more information can be seen on a video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=sBLE6T0700k

NYC CARRIAGE HORSE DRIVER
CHARGED WITH ANIMAL CRUELTY
Police Officer Brian Coll saw a NYC carriage horse in Central Park struggling to pull
the weight of the carriage & questioned the driver, Saverio Colarusso. The driver
said the horse, Blondie, had been hurt for four days but Colarusso had worked
Blondie for 5 hours that day. A mounted police officer was summoned who saw the
injury to the rear left leg & that the horse was in substantial pain. Colarusso had
problems with the law in the past. In 2010, he was charged with drinking while on
duty. He was also fined for driving his horse through city streets at unauthorized
times, failing to keep a daily log & not turning on the lamps on the side of his carriage after dark. The Union who represents carriage drivers had not responded to
calls & e-mails. Colarusso was arrested & could face a fine of up to $1,000 & a year
in jail. Newspaper reports indicate that if Blondie’s condition had not been discovered, the injury could have proved fatal. After Colarusso’s arrest, an order of protection was issued directing him to stay away from Blondie.

OLYMPIC ANIMAL SANCTUARY IS
ALLEGEDLY CLOSING
Several reports showed animals living in substandard conditions
but the Forks Police took no action.
SANCTUARIES --- IN NAME ONLY….
PHOTOS SUPPLIED
The animals were kept in small
crates, & cages. Media reports
showed dogs living in horrific
& neglectful conditions.
After a State of Washington dog
owner handed over her dog to a
“sanctuary” she read scathing
reports of the lack of care at
Olympic Animal Sanctuary. When
she tried to get her dog back,
they refused & she contacted a
staffer at Popcorn Park. We
immediately contacted
local/national groups & it appears
that this is verified through
media reports. Animal groups
advised that local authorities
prevail in WA & it is the City of Forks who must take action. But they
didn’t. Local animal groups tried to deliver food but were turned away.
When rumors started to uncover the situation that animals were living
under the most horrendous conditions, the owner started contacting other
groups outside of the area for assistance. The owner took the 124 dogs,
placed them in a truck, & the animals have been placed with a group in
Arizona to parcel out the dogs.
AHS’ Director contacted some of the groups to offer our assistance but we
have not received any word.
To see many more of the animals that languished at Olympic, log on to
http://www.olympicanimalsanctuary.info/the-dogs.html
Although these animals are in a better place, back files regarding OAS go
back as far as 2008. It is our strong contention that the horrors and lack of
treatment that befell these animals continued because of the lack of
responsible action by the City of Forks. The lack of action by the City as
well as OAS should not go unanswered. Letters should go to:
Bob Ferguson
State Office of the Attorney General
1125 Washington Street SE
PO Box 40100
Olympia, WA 98504-0100
(360) 753-6200
At the very least, oversight should not be left to one department, but
should be regulated by a state agency to oversee animal care.

AHS has followed the stories of the tragic circumstances in which animals are given up by pet owners to ensure that their beloved pets are
left securely in the care of “no kill” sanctuaries. In most instances,
the results are heartbreaking as the discovery comes too late. These
are only a few of the stories…..there are many more. If you have a pet
you must relinquish, check with reliable organizations, visit the
groups yourself, and as you can see by these disastrous situations,
contact your local humane society or animal welfare group.
SOUTH CAROLINA – Hundreds of Cats Lived in Hot Storage Units
Because of weak laws, it took several years for the Sacred Vision Animal
Sanctuary to be shut down as hundreds of cats suffered while being kept
in stifling hot, dungeon-like and disease ridden storage units near Myrtle
Beach. Owner Elizabeth Owen was convicted of depriving her animals of
care, but Owen was allowed to keep 30 cats & a dog after her attorney
said they were her personal pets. To see the pictures and videos of the
pathetic lives of these cats, log on to www.peta.org
FLORIDA – Surrendered Cats Made Available for Scientific Research
& Experiments
Promising lifelong care for cats at the 10th Life Sanctuary in Clewiston, it
was discovered that once cats are signed into their custody, the sanctuary
is allowed to conduct scientific research on the cats. It allows any corporation to conduct experiments & scientific research on any animals in the
development of pharmaceuticals, says owner Maury Swee. One of the
research is injecting cats with a derivative of cobra venom.
PENNSYLVANIA – Sanctuary Traded Cat Food for Drugs
Virginia Kresge Justiniano, owner of Cats with No Name Sanctuary, had
storage sheds filled with cat food that was unused for cats. Several dead
cats were found on the site and at least 70 more were living without
food, water, heat or medical care. Justiniano & her boyfriend started selling large quantities of cat food at auctions to buy heroin & other drugs.
The Ruth Steinart Memorial SPCA said that the cats will remain
temporarily at the site while workers examine them.
GEORGIA - Owner Indicted for Taking Donations for Owned Pets
& then Euthanizing Them
According to ANIMAL PEOPLE Magazine, Lowanda “Peanut” Kilby, the
former Director of the Boggs Mountain Humane Shelter in Clayton, GA
has been indicted on 60 counts of felony for theft, deception & violating
the Georgia RICO Act for allegedly mishandling donations. Kilby allegedly killed over 100 animals. Pet owners had their surrendered animals
euthanized after having been charged $100 or more with the promise to
provide them with medical care & placement. Boggs Mountain Humane
Shelter which claimed to be “no kill” was a finalist in the Rachael Ray
$100K Challenge – a competition meant to encourage adoptions. It is
not known if the Shelter will be closing down. Newspaper reports indicate Kilby has had previous financial problems.

SHORT-MUZZLED DOGS UNDER REVIEW
BY U.K. VETS
A one-day conference was
held at the Royal
Veterinary College,
attended by key professional stakeholders in dog
breeding from the breeding industry, the vet profession, welfare charities
& the scientific community to examine issues relating to the impact of
breeding on the welfare
of brachycephalic (shortmuzzled) dogs. Many

dogs suffer from eye, skin
& breathing problems. They needed to raise awareness among vets
providing advice to those dog owners & breeders so they can recognize
that their dogs’ breathing & eye problems require vet attention. They
felt that some breeds are so badly affected that, if their health did not
improve, they should be banned after 10 years. Educating the dogbuying public on the level of risk would hopefully reduce the demand
for dogs. To read more, log on to http://www.dognews.co.uk/short-muzzled-dogs-review-vets#ixzz2mROPhhJS
DOGS WANTED TO PARTICIPATE IN U.K.
OBESITY RESEARCH
Labs & Golden Retrievers have a predisposition towards obesity &
Eleanor Raffan, a vet & geneticist working at the University of
Cambridge’s Institute of Metabolic Science is running the GOdogs project to find out more. Raffan says that obesity is emerging as a significant threat to dogs’ health with obesity being associated with the
development of all manner of diseases from breathing problems to
arthritis, diabetes & cancer. The GOdogs project needs participation.
They require a saliva sample from each dog, weighed by a vet, & owners will need to fill out a questionnaire. For more information, visit the

KOREA
According to ANIMAL PEOPLE, the Korean Animal Welfare Association
(KAWA) successfully released 3 illegally captured dolphins that were
among the survivors of 11 dolphins for the Jeju Pacific Land marine
park. The judge fined Jeju Pacific Land $9,000, issued suspended jail
sentences to the company president and an employee, & ordered that
the five dolphins from the illegal capture that were alive & at the
marine park be released. Five dolphins died & one had been traded to
the Seoul Grand Park Zoo for 2 sea lions. KAWA & Dolphin Project
founder Ric O’Barry moved the dolphins into a sea pen to rehabilitate
them for release. Sampal rejoined her wild pod within 5 days; Chunsam
soon joined two female dolphins & a calf from her wild pod. Jedol, a
young male, has socialized with other dolphins but has not rejoined a
pod.

Martina McBride was scheduled to play at Sea World’s Bands, Brew &
BBQ Festival in March & decided to say no to Sea World. According to
Change.org, Barenaked Ladies and Willie Nelson have also cancelled
performances at Sea World after becoming aware of the animal cruelty
that takes place there.
Barenaked Ladies announced in December 2013 that they had canceled
their apperance because of the controversy over the documentary
"Blackfish," which is critical of the park's treatment of killer whales.
FUND RAISER HELD TO CONQUER
CANINE CANCER
Several weeks ago, AHS

concerning his dog,
Remy, who had been
diagnosed with cancer.
Herculean efforts were
made to treat Remy with

patients, the effects of the

drug were more than his
canine companion could withstand. Matthew met with Dr. Nicola Mason from
the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine for additional
efforts and support. Dr. Mason has been researching a new way to treat aggressive & fatal forms of osteosarcoma & lymphona. Her innovative approach to
treating dogs with this cancer involves “cancer immunotherapy” using the
patient’s own immune system. The concept is for the bacteria to stimulate the
dog’s `immune system soldiers to seek out & destroy the bacteria’…. much-like
breast cancer cells in women.
To this end, Matthew single-handedly created & produced a benefit to include
a night of comedy & music– Conquer Canine Cancer : Remission is Our Mission
in which over $5,000 was raised to advance the care provided to our beloved
dogs suffering from this disease. Dr. Mason has provided hope for osteosarcoma and lymphoma disease previously associated with a grim prognosis. If you
would like to donate to the Nicola Mason Cancer Research Fund, it can be sent
c/o of the University of PA, 3451 Walnut
St., Philadelphia, PA 19104-6205. If you
have a dog with osteosarcoma or lymphoma & are interested in participating in
Dr. Mason's studies, call 215-898-3996 or
by e-mail at [email protected] In
the meantime, Remy is doing fine with palliative care and is doing great under the
watchful eye & guidance of his best friend.
* As we go to press, we were advised that
Remy was given the best of life by the
Giuliano Family … and went to sleep
peacefully on January 7th.

Featured on the cover of the August
2012 cover was a popular pooch we named “Pops” who was cared for by a homeless man who
hung around Newark’s Penn Station. When he was arrested, the man asked that his only possession
be found a good home. The dirty & disheveled dog was brought to the AHS in Newark where he
was given an immediate grooming. After a short stay he was en route to the Forked River facility
by the Executive Director. By the time they reached
Popcorn Park …. they had bonded & so Pops came to
live with the Director as well as two other dogs who are
used to the comings & goings of temporary fosters. The
most recent foster was Pearl the elderly poodle whose
story can be viewed on www.ahscares.org.
Also at home but not pictured is Pebbles, a Pharoah

her. An animal lover "adopted" her & then brought

HOMELESS VICTIM OF HURRICANE
SANDY FINDS LIFETIME OF LOVE
The Totaro Family of Toms
River with Jersey Boy (r.) &
their dog, Jax.
Jersey came to us almost a year ago, after he
and his dad got hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.
Their home was so badly damaged, it was
uninhabitable. The Society’s ACO got word of
a man and his dog living in a badly flooded
home so she brought supplies over to the
man to try and help. The man immediately
began covering Jersey with the donated
blankets, although he was cold and shivering
himself. Until he could make more suitable
living arrangements, he brought Jersey to
stay with us; we thought it would be a short
stay, but after several weeks Jersey's owner
called to say he would not be able to take
him back, ever. His home destroyed, he had
to move to a place where Jersey would not
be allowed.

Jersey made many good friends during his stay and
Jersey, left, and Jax continue to get to know each other
was recently placed on the Share-A-Pet Program
and become better friends.
Whenever he saw one of his friends approaching, the
toothy grin would spread across his face and he would grab his giant rubber toy & fling it around, as if asking
you to come and play with him.
Finally, that special someone noticed Jersey on Facebook. She was compelled to meet him after seeing his story
and picture posted so many times. We suggested she bring her dog in to meet Jersey and see how it goes. The
Totaro Family brought their beautiful dog Jax in every day for almost a week, just to ensure that Jax and Jersey
would hit it off. They did, and we're confident that they'll become the best of friends!
Jersey got the best home ever. His new family welcomed him with open arms, and promised to give him the
wonderful life that he's been dreaming of and so deserves.

STRAY TRAILER PARK CAT STRUCK BY ARROW

After 3 long hours, Dr. Laura Cromal was
able to remove the arrow which had pierced
the lung, the liver, and came very close to
the aorta and heart. Dr. Laura performed a
truly miraculous surgery & we are thrilled
with the fantastic job that the surgeon did

Although the AHS Res-Q Fund is used for

The Associated Humane Societies is offering

As a very special happy ending, Jade has been adopted by compassionate Dr. Laura

Kudos to Dr. Laura for her outstanding effort in saving Jade & her humanitarian

there will always be a need for this fund that was

Spencer was left in a crate with a blanket and toy

was also a note left on the crate that said that
Spencer had a broken leg, and that his family
couldn't afford to help him.
After bringing Spencer inside, the veterinary clinic

brought him to North Star Vets to see a specialist.
Within hours, Spencer went from being a tiny, helpless little puppy left in a crate in the cold with a broken
leg, to being on an operating table and on the road to a better life.
A couple of weeks have passed since Spencer underwent the extensive surgery of repairing his broken
leg. Spencer is now a happy, healthy pup that is so thrilled to be well again and in good hands at our
AHS Tinton Falls facility. Spencer is a happy, playful, fun-loving little guy that just loves everyone he
meets. He has put the whole painful experience behind him and is looking forward to starting over with
a loving, caring family that will never let him go. Spencer may need some post-surgery care and follow
up for the next few weeks, but we expect him to make a full recovery. Spencer, and all of us at

It was the day before the snowstorm when we received a report that
Waretown residents moved out and dumped their rabbits outside. The
rabbits were all huddled together in the backyard, apparently left to die in
the cold winter. The neighbors called the AHS when the forecast
predicted single-digit temperatures.
Animal Control Officer Maria Cymansky arrived at the scene & with permission from authorities immediately removed the bunnies to the Society.
All of the bunnies were examined by our veterinarian and found to be in
good health. They will be spayed and neutered shortly and for now, they
are warm, happy, healthy and safe. Many of the New Zealand and Polish
bunnies are very friendly and love attention. They will even curl right up
in your lap and cuddle with you. A couple of the adults are a little
nervous, but staff is working with them to help ease their fears and realize
that they are in good hands. We are confident that all of these beautiful
bunnies would do just fine in good, loving homes.
All of these beautiful bunnies will be available for adoption at our facility
at Popcorn Park. Please call 609-693-1900 or email [email protected]

& bit her & she feared for her life. Calhoun said they saw no bite marks
on the groomer. When the Calhouns picked up Darby, they petted &
kissed their dog who seemed to recognize them …. but Darby succumbed to her injuries shortly after that. The groomer was fired & the
Calhouns said they will pursue legal action against the vet hospital.

February 2014
Over the past several days, all of the Society’s facilities have
received phone calls and e-mails regarding animals that are left
out in the sub-zero weather – here in NJ and elsewhere. Every
call and complaint that the Society has received in our area has
been investigated and handled by AHS. Those out of state or out
of our area have been referred to the proper agencies. In some
cases we are thwarted by the very enforcement group who we
believe should WANT US TO PROTECT THE ANIMALS. Our
common sense measuring stick is from the heart …. not a
lawbook. If you see unprotected animals who have little or no
sustenance or no shelter or poor shelter, (we do not consider an
open, unheated garage as shelter, especially for short-haired
dogs), contact AHS or e-mail us. Your donations to AHS will help
us to monitor needy animals 24/7.

BUDDY, A VICTIM OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The Society operates a “Safe Haven Project” for pets in situations
where domestic violence has been clearly identified, and who
need immediate transfer/placement for their safety. Sadly, many
owners are terrified of leaving their pets behind for fear of retribution to the animals. Statistics have shown that abusers commit violent acts against pets to control or punish another in the household. Social workers or others involved in cases of domestic violence who have concerns for the pets in the home should contact
Roseann Trezza at the Society at (973) 824-7080.

Safety as a forum for more coordinated animal health & safety
efforts among law enforcement, animal protection & social

AHS staffers monitor the
e-mail alerts for animals
that are in dangerous,
abusive or life-threatening circumstances that
need rescue. Most
recently, an e-mail alert
stated:
"Last night there was a
cat at my back door;
long hair gray & white
male. It was friendly
when my son petted it.
It was super skinny. I fed it & brought it in for the night. It was so tired & exhausted & starving. We have since found out that the boyfriend of a lady near us threw
it out. Now she wants it back". The finder brought the cat to a vet for a cursory
examination, & then returned it to their home. A flurry of e-mails indicated that
the cat wasn’t doing well.
AHS contacted the Gloucester County resident who was willing to bring the needy
cat to Popcorn Park.
"Buddy" was admitted into our

The One and
Only Ivan
Written by
Katherine Applegate
The One and Only Ivan is a YA novel
based on the true story of Ivan, a silverback who lived in the Exit 8 Big
Top Mall in the state of Washington.
Ivan was captured as an infant from
what is now the Democratic Republic
of Congo along with his sister, (who
died in transit), and was on display in
a small, plexiglass cage for 27 years
in a struggling circus-themed mall
along with other animals.
Ivan tells his tale in the first person,
told simply as a gorilla would. He
descrbes his days, his human keepers,
and his best friends, Stella, an elderly
circus elephant, and Bob, a stray dog.
Ivan thinks about art and at one point
is given paper and markers by the
janitor’s daughter who always talks to the animals. It is when Ruby, a baby
elephant who has been taken from her family in Africa, arrives that things
begin to change. Being a baby, she questions everything; slowly, so do
Ivan and Bob. Ruby’s presence manages to inspire humans as well, who
become aware of the cruelty of the animals’ plight and begin to set things
in motion for a better life for them all.
The One and Only Ivan is a Newbery medal winner, the highest honor
given to children’s books, and for good reason. While deeply moving as a
story on its own, it also brings awareness of the cruelty in taking animals
from their natural environment to be used ror entertainment.

NEW YORK CITY
The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) has partnered with Senator Tony Avella announcing that
a petition has been filed with the NY Supreme
Court asking the court to force the New York Police Dept. to turn over
enforcement records recording the city’s horse-drawn carriage industry .
The NYPD has insisted that after conducting a diligent search, they could
find “no records” of its own enforcement. The City’s Health Dept. has
indicated that the NYPD does have these enforcement records. ALDF has
evidence of a pattern & practice of industry violations including disregard for regulations designed to protect horse welfare & safety. S.667
(Avella) would prohibit the operation of horse-drawn carriages in NYC &
mandate the humane relocation of the horses released from service.
NEW YORK STATE
A00656 would prohibit experimenting on a living organism or
performing surgery on a living organism to view its internal structure
when a scientifically & educationally satisfactory method exists. The
prohibition against vivisection in education applies to colleges,
universities & other professional or graduate schools throughout the
state. The non-animal teaching method or strategy must accomplish the
goal of the lesson or be used by a majority of other institutes of higher
learning to accomplish that goal. Please write to your State
Assemblyperson with your opinion.
NEW YORK CITY
The NY City Council voted unanimously to create a registry of animal
abusers. The legislation was introduced by Council Member Peter F.
Vallone, Jr. The registry will provide electronic information to law
enforcement, pet stores, shelters, veterinarians & animal protection
groups & require them to consult the registry before adopting out or
selling an animal to anyone. It would prohibit convicted animal abusers
from owning, residing with, or intentionally engaging in any physical
contact with any animals for a minimum of 5 years. Anyone in violation
of these terms who fails to report or who owns an animal during the
period of their prohibition would face up to a year in prison.
OZONE PARK
Richard Ferrugio, 51, was found guilty of beating to death a helpless
stray cat as horrified onlookers pleaded with him to stop. He used a tire
iron to fatally bludgeon a feral cat. The incident occurred Feb. 7, 2012
and came to court on July 12, 2013. Queens Supreme Court Justice
Joseph Zayas sentenced Ferrugio to concurrent terms of a year in prison
for aggravated cruelty to animals & an additional six months for
weapons possession.

“UNITED AIRLINES ALMOST
KILLED MY GREYHOUND”
When Janet Sinclair was moving, she transported her Greyhound & her cat
using United Airlines PetSafe program. The program promised personal
care of the pets under temperature controlled conditions as well as comfort & a safety stop in Houston for an extra fee. Sinclair watched from her
window as she saw an employee kick her Greyhound’s crate to move it
into shade instead of handling it more gently. Her pets were left outside
in 94 degree summer heat. When they arrived, Sedona’s crate was filled
with blood, feces, urine & the Greyhound was in full heat stroke. The vet
who treated Sedona confirmed she suffered from heat stroke, urinary tract
infection, kidney failure & liver problems. The Greyhound spent 3 days in
intensive care. United Airlines claims Sedona had a pre-existing medical
condition & the vet disagreed. United Airlines waived the shipping fee for
Sinclair’s animals & agreed to pay the $2,700 vet bill if only Sinclair
signed a non-disclosure agreement. Sinclair has refused & instead started
a Facebook page called “United Airlines Almost Killed My Greyhound”.
The U. S. Dept. of Transportation is about to close a loophole which
allowed U. S passenger airlines to avoid full reporting of
-animal deaths, injuries & losses.
Blue Star Jets, an airplane charter company is partnering with Jet Set
Vets. In addition to in-flight care, Jet Set Vets will assist with preparing
pets’ travel documents and working with veterinary hospitals at the
destination city.
NEW JERSEY LEGISLATION
Assembly Bill A3445 (Guijano, Cryan, Huttle)
was inspired after Superstorm Sandy left pet
owners with very little in the way of assistance
with their animals. This bill would allow passengers to board public transportation with their
pets during a state of emergency or evacuation.
The permission for the pet to board would be as
long as the animal is under the owner’s control by use of a leash, tether
or properly contained. The bill also stipulates that passengers on public
transportation must be provided seating before a domestic companion
animal may be placed in a seat. The “domestic companion animal” would
include a dog, cat, bird, fish or any animal commonly referred to as a
pet. The bill now heads to Gov. Christie’s desk.
As reported in the Holiday issue, S.2665 & A.3944 was the cruel beaver
trapping bill which was on the fast track for the war on wildlife. Senator
Smith advised that he decided not to put up the bill for a vote. Shortly
thereafter, reports indicated that the bill was scheduled for a last-minute
hearing. The bill would have removed limitations on the
trapping/killing/drowning of beavers. As of this date, there appears to be
no activity on the bill.
Pet Food Recalls
Health Canada has announced Your True Companion Pet Products recalled
True Raw Choice Bulk Dehydrated Natural Pet Treats due to possible contamination with Salmonella bacteria.
Recalled products include: Duck Feet, Duck Wings, Chicken Feet, Lamb
Trachea & Chicken Breast.
A total of 280 cases of the affected treats were sold in bulk at various pet
food stores across Canada. Even though the recalled products may have
been purchased in Canada, they may also have been carried home to pets
in the United States.

NO PLANS FOR PETS – NOW BONDED PAIR
LEFT HOMELESS
When their owner passed
away, their daughter
brought Chico & Sensi to
AHS as no plans had
been made for their care.
The 7 year old littermates have had their
world turned upside
down. The well-mannered
sweet sisters need a "new
leash on life" to help
them as they silently
grieve for the love, the
home, and the life they once had.
If you have pets and are concerned for their welfare, send a
SASE to AHS, 124 Evergreen Ave., Newark, N J 07114 or e-mail
[email protected] requesting a copy of "Who Will
Care for Them".

they can continue to share together. File 122092-F &File

The CHIMP Act Amendments
provisions has been signed
into law on Nov. 27, 2013
after receiving overwhelming
approval by both the U.S.
Senate
&
House
of
Representatives. This amendment was needed to provide
funds for the care of hundreds of chimpanzees retired
from research now & in the
near future. The funds were
needed for Chimp Haven, a national sanctuary that relies on federal funds
for 75% of its operating capital. Chimp Haven is already building new facilities for chimps to be retired from the New Iberia Research Center. Both the
original bill & the amendment require the Government Accountability
Office to conduct a independent evaluation of chimpanzees owned or controlled by the National Institutes of Health & their status in 2 years.
HR 2224 & S707 would prohibit research facilities from using animals
obtained from random source or “Class B” animal dealers. It would provide
for better protection for cats & dogs obtained through theft, misrepresentation & then sold for research. This would amend the Animal Welfare Act
to ensure that all dogs/cats used by research facilities are obtained legally.
Animals that are stolen from backyards, picked up as strays or taken as “free
to good home” ads can be sold to a research facility without the intent or
permission of the owner. Class B dealers have a poor track record of
accounting for their animals. It is possible for a companion animal to end
up in a lab because they temporarily escaped from or were stolen from their
home. This bill was introduced during six successive sessions of Congress yet
has failed to pass each year. Now it is time. Please write to your U.S.
Senator/Congressman to support this bill.

PROGRAM
The Society’s unique SHARE-A-PET PROGRAM is helping many animals thanks to the
kindness and generosity of many HUMANE NEWS readers. The animals are placed on the program
on the basis of such details as victims of cruelty, handicap, length of stay, etc.
As a result of our efforts, brand new facilities have been given to these orphans. You can help by
“adopting” one of these orphans for $10.00 a month. In turn, you will receive a color photo and
report of your pet every four months, plus a membership card which entitles you to FREE ADMISSION TO POPCORN PARK. You are also invited to visit your pet, take him for walks, bring him
treats, toys, and even adopt him. All funds gathered under this program are applied directly to the care
of these animals. Any funds that exceed what is needed for a particular animal are applied to the
care and welfare of other shelter anmals. You can also view and sponsor all Share-A-Pets on our web
site at: www.ahscares.org, and click on Share-A-Pet Program.

Aslan of Howell
To see the transformation of Aslan after the day we
saw him bleeding in a small, grimy kennel crate makes
us beam with pride. In September, AHS worked with
federal authorities involving a drug/firearm/dogfighting
bust in Monmouth County involving pit bull terriers.
When Zoo Director John Bergmann approached the
scene, his first encounter was with a dog in a small,
grimy kennel crate. Judging from the blood & scarring,
it appeared he had been used as a bait dog.
Therefore, it was decided to keep him inside the crate
until he was delivered and placed inside of a vet’s
office for care. When John slipped his fingers into the crate to transport him, he felt the injured dog lick
his fingers to show his devotion to someone who would remove him from the hellhole.
After his arrival at Popcorn Park, he was afraid of dogs as he had endured a torturous existence on a daily
basis. There were physical & emotional injuries that caused him to keep his head bowed, tail between his
legs. The tragic scene of these dogs waiting to be fought were like lambs waiting to be led to slaughter.
All of the dogs lived in make-shift hovels & it is not known how each of them came into possession of a
dogfighter. Were they stolen? Advertised on Craigs List?
Aslan has placed his trust in us. He is now friendly, outgoing & sees that there are people that are kind and
gentle and who look upon him with love. He has been placed on our Share-A-Pet Program.

I remember the date - November 2005;
so thankful I was rescued, so happy to be
alive. A neglect and abuse victim of
someone who didn’t care; that person
shouldn’t have been allowed to have me
there. But once all fixed
up, I began my wait; each
