Their organization has been recommended to us from the Archdiocesan Mission Office as part of the Annual Summer Mission Appeal that takes place in all parishes throughout the summer months. The 2nd Collection today will be taken up to support their efforts. Please be generous. *************** Perhaps you have heard the recent news that Very Rev. Bob Barron, rector of the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, has been appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, California. On behalf of our parish community, I congratulate him on his new assignment and wish him much happiness and success as he takes on the even more challenging role of Auxiliary Bishop in Los Angeles. As you know Bishop-elect Robert Barron is well known for a number of film projects that have become very popular world-wide. In particular the “Catholicism Series” and more recently – “CATHOLICISM - The New Evangelization”. *************** I recently received the following information that I thought might be of interest to some of our parents who are Catholic school employees and who might have high-school aged children: Saint Viator to Offer Significant Tuition Discount to Catholic Educators Members of the Board of Trustees of Saint Viator High School agreed on a new policy at their April meeting, intended to make a Catholic school education more accessible for one of its most loyal constituents: Catholic school employees. On Tuesday, trustees approved awarding up to a half tuition discount for the children of full time Catholic school and parish educators working in local parishes and schools. The discount will go into effect the next academic year. “The tuition discount reflects our desire to reward people who devote themselves to Catholic education and thus are choosing careers that make less money,” said President Fr. Corey Brost, C.S.V. “This is what it means to be Catholic. We take care of each other.” Catholic school educators would receive an automatic discount on their tuition bill, depending on their years of service. 2 August 2, 2015 From the Pastors Desk... www.stedna.org/pastorsmessage Those with between one and two years of full-time employment would receive a 25 percent discount, while those with three to four years of full-time employment would receive a 33 percent discount. Those with five or more years of full-time employment would receive a 50 percent reduction in tuition cost, right off the top. Together with the associates, brothers and priests of the Viatorian Community, trustees are driven to ensuring parents that students receive a quality Catholic education that integrates faith formation with academic excellence. For more information, contact President Fr. Corey Brost, CSV, at 847-392-4050 ext. 230 or [email protected] *************** Although it’s still a little early, I’d like to encourage everyone in our parish to consider joining with your own family/friends/neighbors, as well as your fellow parishioners, for our upcoming Trivia Night here at St. Edna on Saturday night, September 26th. If you’ve never been to an event like this, I can assure you it is a lot of fun. You don’t have to be a genius, because in reality, every one of us has some of that trivial knowledge that someone else doesn’t. I know I’m looking forward to this night and hope that you, too, will be marking your calendars for Saturday, September 26th, and planning on joining us for a great time. This will be one of the last opportunities that is part of our parish’s 50th Anniversary celebration events. Hope to see you there for a good time! Have a great week! Fr. Rich CENSUS INFORMATION UPDATES Recently we began the process of updating our parish census information. Many of you may have already received information in the mail asking for information so that we may update and correct our database. It is extremely important to have accurate contact and sacramental information for all of our parishioners! If you have not yet had an opportunity to do so, please return the form that you received so that we can update our records accurately. We will be sending out information to all registered parishioners in the next few months. Thank you to those who have taken the time to return their corrected registration form! We truly appreciate your cooperation! Co-Chairs: Brent Johnson Deacon Greg Beeber Members: Bob Amend Vince Caffarello David Clark Nancy Holpuch Karen Janisch (rec.) www.stedna.org/stewardship Stewardship Bulletin Reflection August 2, 2015 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Paul advises us in his letter to the Ephesians (our Second Reading) to “put away the old self of your former way of life… and put on the new self.” Paul is calling for a conversion, a change in how we live. We need to remember the first documented word that Jesus said when He began His ministry was “Repent.” It is also crucial that we keep in mind that the original word Jesus said was “metanoeo,” the Greek word as reported in Gospels. There are two parts to this word: the first meta means “change,” and the second noeorefers to the mind and its thoughts and perceptions. Thus, what Jesus was really saying to us was “change your hearts and minds.” This is what St. Paul is speaking about when he says we need to “put away the old self… and put on the new self.” We are called to conversion; we are called to a change, a transformation that puts God at the center of our lives rather than self and all that goes with that self-centeredness. This is the stewardship conversion to which we often make reference. This is not a one-time conversion but an ongoing one, a daily one, perhaps even more than once a day. That may sound impossible, but it is not if all we do and all that motivates us is the desire to live as Jesus wants us to. It is not easy, but it is joyful and fulfilling. Well, for the greatest number of our sisters and brothers, bread is still the bottom line, both literally and symbolically. Jesus may have informed the devil that people “do not live on bread alone,” but physical hunger must be satisfied along with the spiritual hunger satisfied by the nourishing Word of God. Play your part in feeding the poor. Support a local food bank. Your work will ultimately provide you and those you serve with soul-enriching nourishment. T ’ : Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15; Ephesians 4:17, 20-24; John 6:24-35 E M ,A 3 Just add gratitude to taste Some of the happiest words in the English language are: Time to eat! No matter how rough the path of a given day, sitting down to a meal improves the mood and replenishes energy. But the recharging effect of a meal requires one simple plug-in on our end: gratitude. The Israelites in the desert didn’t appreciate the steady diet of manna that literally saved their lives. Instead they groused and compared it to the fare they had back in Egypt. Bring gratitude to every table, and bon appétit! T ’ : Numbers 11:4b-15; Matthew 14:13-21 violent controversy. The Greek word for the latter title is Theotokos, God-Bearer. Saint Francis of Assisi saw each of us as “bearers of Christ within,” whose duty is to bring Christ to birth daily in our world. In honor of the Mother of God, work to bring Christ to life each day with simple acts of love and forgiveness. T ’ : Numbers 13:1-2, 25-14:1, 26a-29a, 34-35; Matthew 15:21-28 ,A 6 T L Out of the clear blue Transfiguration is a moment when everything changes. It might be the moment you receive a diagnosis of cancer. A phone call in the middle of the night bringing news of a sudden death. A truck that careens out of control on the highway . . . or a bomb dropped out of the clear blue summer sky on an August Monday morning. Hiroshima was a tragedy, as has been all war violence before or since. How about we work on a new transfiguration—to a world where violence is left behind and peace reigns? T ’ : Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14; 2 Peter 1:16-19; Mark 9:2-10 F T F ,A 7 F C , Open your heart to those in need Saint Cajetan is the beloved patron of Argentina, especially of that country’s poor and those seeking decent employment. He was familiar with the world of high finance and founded the Bank of Naples in the 16th century to offer the poor an alternative to loan sharks who preyed upon them. Argentinian Pope Francis consistently urges us to help the poor, perhaps not by founding a bank but neither by simply writing a check. The Holy Father says we must engage with poor people, look them in the eye, and touch them, and then together go out to meet and help those who are in greater need, because there is always someone in greater need: “Your heart will begin to enlarge, to enlarge, to enlarge! . . . Do it!” T ’ : Deuteronomy 4:32-40; Matthew 16:24-28 ,A 4 J V , Say hello to a priest today To the sophisticated of the 21st century, Saint John Vianney can seem a funny, well-intentioned but bumbling Catholic antique. But his commitment, especially to those seeking forgiveness and reconciliation, was anything but antiquated, and he continues to inspire. We can forgive his overzealous threat to withhold absolution from penitents who refused to give up dancing (!) and celebrate parish priests, who—like Saint John—place the good of their parishioners and their growth in holiness above all else. S ,A 8 Know a priest? Why not call and give him a word of F D , The prayerful, dynamic duo encouragement and gratitude today?
