Celebrated from May 13-15, the initiative is designed to recognise the contribution of those patrolling the boundary, manning the goal line and controlling the action out on the field each week. In Victoria, there are more than 6,000 registered umpires at community level, along with thousands of club-based umpires, who commit their time and energy to allow those chasing the Sherrin the chance to do so. Supported by the AFL during Round 8 of the 2016 Toyota AFL Season, the devoted round educates the football public about the roles and responsibilities of umpires and reminds all participants within our game to take responsibility for their behaviour on match day. AFL Victoria strongly encourages all affiliated Leagues to work with their local umpiring groups and associations to embrace this round and thank them for the critical role they play in our game. Some of the activities community leagues are encouraged to undertake include building relationships between local coaches and umpiring groups as well as host an umpires training session where football clubs can gain a better appreciation for the role. Community Umpire Round is also another opportunity to encourage those who want to be involved in the greatest game in the world to take up umpiring. If you are new to the game, or your playing days are over, then umpiring is a great way to contribute to community football. Regardless of your age, gender, culture or ability, anyone can get involved in umpiring and enjoy the many benefits the role provides. Not only do you get the best view of the action, but it helps keep you fit, earn money, be part of a team and learn leadership skills that you can take with you when you walk off the ground. But that’s exactly the scenario confronting the Tigers today when they host 4-1 MT ELIZA, who are coming off their first defeat of the season. The Seaford resurgence has been one of the stories of the season so far. Last week, new coach Ben Murphy scoffed at suggestions his side was a contender, but a win today would surely have him reconsidering. The Tigers are playing with confidence and are enjoying their footy. It’s clear for all to see. Aaron Walton and Dean Williamson continue to lead from the front while Brendan Dawes was terrific last week and Nick Braund, Josh Stokes and Jackson Mockett keep performing at a high level. The Redlegs started slowly last week and were always chasing. Coach Troy Shannon described the effort as “poor’’. Today they are likely to get back key players and Shannon will be demanding a strong response to last week’s sub-standard effort. BONBEACH finally cracked their duck egg last week, downing the previously unbeaten Mt Eliza with a spirited four-quarter performance. Now the Sharks get the chance to inject some momentum into their season when they host local rival CHELSEA, who have lost two in a row since thrashing Langwarrin. Bad kicking for goal proved costly for the Seagulls against Mornington last week – they kicked 7.19 – but they continue to give highly-competitive efforts under new coach Brett Dunne. Recruit Beau Caia has been a revelation so far, while James Sivijs made his presence felt last week and Jordan Tabakman continues to play well. For Bonbeach, Luke Damon’s strong presence up forward has definitely given the Sharks a boost. He’s strong, competitive and knows how to kick a goal. MORNINGTON were glad to see the back of April after enduring three straight losses. Last week the Bulldogs returned to their winning ways, doing enough to beat Chelsea, and today they can square the ledger at 3-3 by beating cellar dweller LANGWARRIN (1-4). Mornington’s experienced players are in form - the likes of Jackson Calder, Mick Gay, Chris Baker, Joel Miller and Stuart Seager – while coach Chris Holcombe has been able to blood some good youngsters, including Broden and Kalen Bird. Former Casey Scorpion Ricky Plummer will, in time, prove to be a good pick up. Langy also is giving their kids a good go, with Josh Bateman the latest teenager to get a taste of senior footy. Langwarrin played well to beat Edi-Asp a fortnight ago and got within 20 points of an in-form Seaford last week so their form isn’t bad. Kieran Albanese keeps kicking goals and Mitch Porter is playing good footy. www.peninsulafnl.com.au 26867 Peninsula 2016 R6.indd 7 7 11/05/16 4:23 PM Football Preview A hot and cold EDI-ASP make the trip to John Coburn Oval to face a FRANKSTON YCW team riding high after 19 wins in a row spanning nearly a year. The Eagles opened themselves up for ridicule after falling to bottom side Langwarrin a fortnight ago but rebounded strongly last week, producing a crisp display to beat Karingal by 19 points, with Steve and Tim Mannix showing the way and Brendan Neville impressing. But YCW appears to bat deeper all over the ground with Daniel Waddell, Paul Minchington, Dave Bodley, Byron Barry and Kyle Hutchison playing confident, clinical footy. KARINGAL and PINES have had their share of ups and downs already this season and they meet in an important clash. While Karingal are rebuilding, the Pythons have their sights on a top-three spot and, if they are serious about getting there, they would need to get past the Bulls today. Karingal looked sharp in their opening win over Langwarrin but heavy defeats to Mt Eliza and Frankston YCW have provided stark reality checks. And injuries to key personnel, including spearhead Leigh Poholke, has also taken some steam out of the Bulls’ early charge. STONECATS EMERGE IN THE RESERVES… FRANKSTON YCW have won three of their past four games to emerge as a genuine contender. With James Bryant, Mitchell Street and Jacob Cheverly in sharp form, the Stonecats should see off winless EDI-ASP today. CHELSEA, coming off an impressive win with Lewis Krieger and Mason Bailey to the fore, will climb into the top five if they can beat BONBEACH. But Bonny won’t be easy. They are a good side and did push Mt Eliza last week. LANGWARRIN (4-1) are chasing their fifth straight win when they travel to 0-5 MORNINGTON. With the impressive Corey Moore, Mitch Mathie and Jesse Bice in dashing form, the Kangaroos are on a roll. SEAFORD have dropped two of their past three games and face undefeated ladder leaders MT ELIZA. Brenton Lambert was best on for the Redlegs last week while Will Mace continues to make an impact. PINES have been competitive in recent weeks and that elusive win could come today against KARINGAL (1-4). LANGY CHASE FOUR STRAIGHT IN THE UNDER 19s… On a three-game winning streak, LANGWARRIN goes to MORNINGTON with a spring in their step. The Bulldogs also are going well…setting up a great clash. Langy will look to in-form trio Matt Peynenborg, Bayleigh Tate and Zach Andrewartha. FRANKSTON YCW’s perfect record goes on the line against EDI-ASP. The deep-in-depth Stonecats have kicked 40 goals in the past two weeks. Josh Butland has been a stand out, while Ben Cracknell and Owen Vine continue to make a name for themselves. Unbeaten MT ELIZA travel to SEAFORD, who narrowly missed out on making it three wins in a row last week. Look for talented Redleg Lucas Brancatisano to continue his bright form. PINES face KARINGAL who played terrific footy to beat Edi-Asp last week. And CHELSEA will be keen to keep BONBEACH winless. We hope you have a great day. Also, good luck to Azza Walton today in his 200th Senior game. Hopefully today is a memorable one for you Azza! Last week the we travelled to Langy and the 19s started well, kicking 4 goals to 1 in the 1st quarter, but it all went pear shaped after this as we only managed 3 more goals for the game, going down by 13 points in a disappointing performance. Ash Burks, Rick Chisolm and Lachie Mullins were solid down back, whilst Brodie McLean, Bradley Magee and Lukey Hayes all had a crack. A depleted Reserves side came out firing in the first quarter in an almost identical score line to the 19s, also kicking 4 goals to 1 in the first but only managing 2 more goals for the match, going down by 3 goals. The boys had a crack though and should hold their heads up high. Sammy Duffield snagged 3 goals in the 1st and competed hard all day, Courts played his best game for the club, whilst Shannon Moore on debut, T Lo and Jimmy Herbert all had a dip. The Seniors made it 3 wins from the last 4 weeks and continue to improve by the week after losing 4 players to injury from the week before in a brave display. Azza Walton kicked 3 in yet another great performance, Dawesy played his best game for the club, Skipper Josh Stokes and Kane Taylor were dominant down back whilst young guns Curtis Murfett and Nick Braund provided plenty of zip. The club wants to send our condolences to the Mulvogue and Hayes families, whom suffered losses during the week, our thoughts are with you Karingal Bulls Premium partners of the Bulls this year are Frankston RSL, BMK, Bank of Queensland, Peninsula Sports Medicine, Construct Homes, Hallam Truck Centre, RAMS, Priority Printing Solutions, Crownbet and Bluegum – PLEASE support these businesses whenever you can as they support us Last week up at Edi-Asp the Unders got things moving in style, coming away wqith a good win after a slow start with 8 goal kickers and best Mason, Zane & Punta. The reserves notched up their 1st win for the year; leading at every change with Dizz, Matt Burnett & Pistol in the best. The senior game was one that we probably let slip, with Edi getting a good start with the wind and us having to chase the rest of the afternoon. Jake Kelly was in the best and kicked 2 along with Cocky; Harry, LVR and Burke also in the best. Today we welcome Pines to the Bullpit and also our U17 and U19 families for the gameday function – make sure you come into the rooms after the Unders game. Tonight is the Trivia Nite and there may be some last minute tickets available – see Nic Triep 10 26867 Peninsula 2016 R6.indd 10 Grab a ticket in the Bullettes Thermomix raffle, and don’t forget the Bulls raceday coming up soon – all details for these and more on the web site Plenty of social events coming up – keep an eye on the website – karingalfc.com and follow us on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram for all updates! Both the 19’s and Seniors paid for a very poor conversion rate and ordinary decision making which needs to be addressed . The Mornington boy’s ran harder and were cleaner all across the ground, Best for Gull’s Vitzdamm-Jones, King, Jaeger & Nikolic, let’s set ourselves for Bonbeach this week. The 2’s had a strong win and hopefully can keep it going moving forward, Nana, Lewie, Voss’y , Drilla & Nita were all good with great support from Lauchie and Niza, big test this week lad’s. In the main game we needed to start well, had opportunities but just didn’t put the score on the board. It was a very willing game and simply the Dog’s cashed in when they had their chances. Thought the boys tuffed it out with Siv, Trippa, Beau, Aarsie & young Danial Knowles all solid performers ! also big Jordy really presented well again. Lets get down to the Beach this week team and put ourselves back in the mix before the week off. Please see Rich for $1000 draw tickets and also keep 18 th June free for Lunch V Seaford ( Big Day ) with Collingwood Legend Ross “Twiggy” Dunne the Guest speaker ! $50.00 Lunch, Beer & Wine 12 / 2.00 pm See you at the Gullery ! www.peninsulafnl.com.au 11/05/16 4:23 PM Club Notes Frankston YCW StoneCats We welcome the Edi Asp Eagles to the Coburn Oval today for what promises to be a great display in front of the Pink Ladies Luncheon. Have a great day girls ! Last week at Eric Bell, the Numero’s scooted out of the blocks and set the game up by half time. Predictably Pines fought back in the second half but, despite inaccuracy, we prevailed by 53 points. Duck, Bysa and BJ (in his 50th firsts game) continually drove the ball into our half whilst Mincho (3) and Bods (5) finished off. In a danger game the Twos engaged in an arm wrestle for the first half before breaking away and winning by 16 points. James Bryant was probably best and was well supported by Streety and Blicky. Chappy in his 150th Club game presented well and booted 4 majors. The Threes started brightly against a plucky Pythons outfit and maintained the lead for the balance of the game. Ben Cracknell and Owen Vine provided drive along with Jake Roberts and Aidan Fischer. Josh Butland was again the scoring focal point with 6 Sausage Rolls. Kudos to the Pines lads who fought valiantly and matched us for goals in the last stanza. The Stonekittens also had a clean sweep against the Pythonettes - check their notes. Next week is Inter League so good luck to the sides and our reps. Past Players day is June 4 (the Chelsea game) -get that in the diary. Don’t forget the Bar is open on Thursday nights as is the kitchen so come down and join the debates and time honoured raffle. And you can watch the lads train as well. Pines Pythons Today we take on one of our neighbors, the bulls.... Time to get back on board with a few wins. Seniors were outclassed by the well structured Christian Workers but showed glimpses in patches.Great to see young gana getting back to his best and Giraffe Hendry plucking a few. Also Chewy and Pottsy getting a few touches. No prisoners this week!!!. Reserves were in the game all day but just lacked the winning punch... Gordo kicked a couple in his 500th and Jaz Mac was at his pacy best in the pocket. D Mac, Pizzey and Frawls were good also. Great work by frawls selling a pines membership at the station. The unders are improving , their better were Puschy, Tommy, Monkey and Goldy. Great day /night celebrating Gordo’s day. Thanks to YCW for there support. Next function is TOGA PARTY on 4th June. Player sponsorship is now due..SPONSOR OF THE WEEK... Dunsford Financial. See Dunny for your needs ...TRIVIA.. Name the 3 players to play in Pines and Karingals last premiership teams?? KICKITTOME Bonbeach Sharks Shark’s persistence pays off After a few tough rounds and minor loses for our seniors we finally got our first win on the board. Bonbeach controlled the game and fought off many attacks from Mt Eliza to win by 21 points. Luke Damon and Shane Mac Donald kicked 7 between them. Bailey, Sole and Carpenter were great. Nice to see club favourite and best and fairest winner Mark Tyrell back after a moderate injury. In the top of the table clash our reserves just went down in a close game. After a very slow start, we finally found the ball and our pace but, it was too late. Ezi Turner and Minner kicked 2 a piece with Rosario, Rouette and Sison playing well. This match clearly showed that our reserves are capable of matching it with the best- let’s hope we can continue the good form. In the u19’s, a good first and third quarter wasn’t enough as we were comfortably beaten. Once again, some promising signs from young guns Aaron Ingram, Timmy Mulholland and Ryan Francis. Weiland kicked 2 goals. This week we welcome Chelsea Football Club to Shark Park for what promises to be a memorable local derby. Don’t Forget! Today is Ladies Day in the Social RoomsThis is the perfect opportunity to thank all of the fantastic Mums, Girlfriends and Partners who make our club a much better place. Trivia Question: How many Turvilles have played senior football for Bonbeach? #FinsUp DS www.peninsulafnl.com.au 26867 Peninsula 2016 R6.indd 11 11 11/05/16 4:23 PM Club Notes Langwarrin Kangaroos This week saw our young guns come up against one of the benchmarks in our league, the Seaford Football Club. We were a somewhat depleted squad with several of our players out. Notwithstanding, Mark Luxa and Chris Stanley had our players well prepared for a tough contest and they realised a game of ebb’s and flows either way throughout the game. This was a “shootout” with the ball going from left to right, and the goal umpires kept busy. Langwarrin midfielder Zack Andrewartha finished with 6 for the day, well supported by the efforts of all team mates in what was a gruelling game of football. Another win for our U19’s. Our Reserves too continued their recent run of good form and after a slow start in ideal conditions we managed to progressively peg Seaford back over the following 3 quarters , to eventually run out winners by 3 goals . The continued good form from Corey Moore and Mitch Mathie was really pleasing to see. Our seniors played great footy in the first quarter and this should have given us the confidence to build upon this lead . Unfortunately this was not to be as we failed to capitalise on it for the remaining 3 quarters. It was almost like watching the reserves game in reverse, as Seaford clawed their way back and we went down by 20 points. To see the two Bateman’s in the team, Kieran’s continued good form up forward with 3 goals and Corey 2, being the good points of the game. Our match review sponsor of the week is “Silva Fern Cabinets” Let’s hope we make it 3 from 3 this week. Go Langy ! Mornington Bulldogs Today we welcome to the kennel the Langwarrin FNC and play for the Mornington Mercedes Cup. Upstairs we have all our lovely ladies who are enjoying the annual Ladies Day. Last week against Chelsea the Unders had a good solid win and are working hard each week. The greatest positive to come out of the day is the improvement that is yet to come from this group. Different names are starting to bob up on our best players list as we continue to look for four quarter efforts across our list. The reserves battled hard however unfortunately fell short. Despite 12 26867 Peninsula 2016 R6.indd 12 a slow start they worked their way back into the game and at 3/4 time managed to hit the lead by a goal. Unfortunately Chelsea proved too strong in the last and the boys couldn’t get over the line. Great to have Aidan back at the club, Leith snagged three and Pete a couple. The seniors bounced back and played a solid 4 quarters of footy to get over the line by 28 points. They set it up with a great start into the wind, 4 goals straight handed them the lead at 1/4 time and they led at every stage. It was pleasing to see the boys finish strongly, kicking 6 in the last quarter to run over the top of the opposition. Jacko finished up with 3, Micky Gay dominated the ruck whilst Joel and Bakes did a great job around the contest. Special mention to our Women’s team who are 4 from 4 and travelling along beautifully. A great game last week with Hannah Lewis playing an inspirational last quarter to bring home the win. It is another big challenge this week and important we get the points again! Go Doggies Woof Woof Edithvale-Aspendale Eagles Our club notes are bought to you this week by UTOPIAN HOMES. For home design and development visit their website http://utopianhomes.com.au/ Good win for the senior team against Karingal with B. Neville, S. Mannix, T. Mannix, C. Wylie, M. Meehan, Z. Muschialli amongst the best. Big test this week against YCW and the boys are up for the challenge. The netball girls remain on the top of the table in all divisions after another 4 good wins. The senior women’s football team scored another win defeating Knox in front of a great crowd. Pink day luncheon was booked out and a great success last week with a great speaker and fantastic food. More luncheons coming up so stay tuned and book early to avoid missing out. Plenty of action at the club this week. Great food and great company and the Joker Poker jackpot is still up for grabs. After a sluggish start the Under 19’s overpowered their opponents to win by 72 points, restricting them to just 2 goals. Once again Harry Scott was amongst the goals with 4 and Ben Farish 3. Best players were Branca, Blakey, Youngy, Bez, Niall & Ben McKenzie The Senior team started poorly with Bonbeach dominating the scoring with 3.6 to 0.1 in the 1st quarter. We came back with 4 goals in the 2nd however they managed another 5 to lead by 5 goals at the main break. Once again we failed to impact the scoreboard in the 3rd term, with Bonbeach kicking another 4 goals to 1. We started the last term with a goal first inside the 1st minute and another 5 for the quarter to get to within 3 goals but they kicked the final goal of the game to win by 21. JV booted 3 and Stricko Jnr & Heasa a couple - Better players were Jay, Lombo, Matt Lillie, Jimmy & Lefty. Congrats to Tony Vanin on his debut game for the Redlegs. Need to bounce back today. The Reserves once again started brilliantly with a 5.5 to nil 1st quarter against the 2nd placed team and led comfortably at 1/2 time. They fought back after 1/2 time and got the game back to 10 points late in the last quarter before the boys found something extra, booting the last 3 of the game to win 11.10 to 7.6 Better players were Kenty, Lambie, Buz, Groota, Cuz & newcomer Jake Tognazzini. Could hear a pin drop on a pile of luxury goose feather and down pillows. Couldn’t at least one person have clapped? Wishful thinking hey? Umpires. Just checked the Oxford dictionary and this is what it read - the root of all evil…You either hate them or…you hate them. When was the last time someone openly voiced their love of an umpire? Ouch! That was scathing. But probably pretty fair. Who would bother liking an umpire? Let’s be honest. We pay decisions that give your opposition a gimme kick. One that they probably didn’t deserve. We throw the ball to their advantage because we’ve got no chance of ever getting it to go straight up. Didn’t you feel that gust of wind? We give them set shots at goal from unmistakable positions just because you looked at us the wrong way. Most of us prefer to be profiled from our right sides. So looking left is always the wrong way. But allegedly (it’s definitely one of those secret spy codes) there’s a week in the football calendar that promotes and celebrates community umpiring. And guess what? Apparently it’s supposed to be this week... It’s alright. You don’t have to feel guilty if you didn’t realise or just plan and simply forgot. Most of us missed the memo too. But hey, umpires have to showboat sometimes too. This week at both our Seaford and Fountain Gate training bases combined (Yes, umpires do train. The goalies have to do their finger exercises…) we have had 10 AFL umpires impart some of their knowledge and experience. The opportunity to meet these idols (Again yes, umpires can be idols too) is invaluable for all our young aspiring whippersnappers. But just because it’s AFL Community Umpiring Round this week doesn’t mean you should roll out the red carpet for us. However if you’ve got a nice velvet one that would protect our shoes from the potential mud that could be handy. But nonetheless…say hi, hurl some verbals at us from the other side of the fence (but make it creative) 24 26867 Peninsula 2016 R6.indd 24 and then meet us in the rooms for a chinwag and drink afterwards. And Another One Cracks It In The Big Smoke He was once a tall, twiggy kid who could be blown over by the gentlest of breezes. But he could run (as long as the wind wasn’t picking him up and dragging him backwards). But most importantly the kid could umpire. Roll on a few years and the kid is flying. But quite in the same way as when the wind treated him like a kite. He’s still a beanpole of a lad. And he can still umpire. But now everyone knows he can umpire. Today Leighton Rowe, of SUA fame, umpires his first VFL Senior Game between Williamstown and Northern Blues at Burbank Oval after just 12 months on the VFL list. A lot of kids have promise, but it takes something else to come through on that promise. For all the hard work and commitment that Leighton has put in over the years this is a fantastic reward. But be sure that this is not the last you’ll hear of the softly spoken twig from Frankston. He’s meant for bigger things. Get Involved SUA are always on the lookout for those crazy individuals who want to become umpires. It takes a certain type of person to want to umpire, but those people who take the brave step, often benefit greatly from all umpiring offers. Will it be this week when the meet the Sharks? YCW V Edi Asp Match of the round! If anyone can knock off the ladder leaders its is the Stonekittens. They comfortably disposed of Pines last week while Edi Asp beat Karingal in a grand final re-match. Karingal V Pines Pines are taking it to the sides sitting higher up the ladder and in turn keeping the competition competitive. Will Karingal be at full strength this week or will the Pythons use this opportunity to ladder climb? Mornington V Langwarrin In form Mornington welcome the Roos this weekend in what should be another win for the Bulldogs. Langwarrin lost last week to Seaford at home, unable to use the home court to their advantage. Seaford V Mt Eliza Another top 4 tussle sees the Tigers host the Redlegs at Linen House. Seaford took care of Langwarrin last week but this match will definitely be tougher! Catch up with Peter in the club rooms or give him a call & support the businesses that support your club. Last week we played Karingal at Dingley & the D, C & B grade games were terrific contests, played with gusto & passion. It was great to see our girls dig deep to come away with three well earned wins. In the A grade game the final score was 67 to 5 our way. I’m not sure what to say but our A grade did not play the best Karingal side on the day. It was very disappointing for our players & I’ve never seen a game where there was so little contesting. A big thank you to Sue & Lauren from Mornington for helping us out with another umpire for our A grade game. We really appreciate your help at such short notice! On the social scene - June 4th is our Silent Disco. Don’t forget to buy a ticket in the Oke Long Board Raffle. The lucky winners will be drawn on 30th July at our Annual Ladies Luncheon! This week we play YCW on Thursday night at Dingley. A bit of a fixture change so we hope to see a few a Eagle supporters court side. Good luck to all Eagles teams playing this week! Fly Eagles!! Frankston YCW StoneKittens A Grade came out firing with positive work across the board, playing with intensity and belief. Combinations worked well overall with all girls contributing to the 57 – 43 win. Courtney Janssens is back to where she needs to be, playing a stellar game to take out BOG, followed by Jess Tobin who also played a strong game. Another good win for the B grade girls today, which will give them some good momentum going into the toughest clash so far against Edi Asp next week. Each week the team work and flow down the court is getting better and Saturday was no exception with some really good passages of play and at times some great patience feeding into the goal ring. BOG to Ash Whitnall whose movement and drive into the ring was amazing. C Grade had an absolutely amazing game, with everyone working really hard to put what was worked on in training into the game. Lots of changes and new combos and the girls took it on board and gave 110%. Lauren Treacy was BOG for working super hard all game with strong leads, amazing defensive pressure and great control. The D grade girls came out firing this week putting defensive pressure on right down the court which was applied for most of the game. We had two strong quarters, and two quarters that require some improvement but it is exciting to watch this team improve week on week. We have found another goaler with Kirsten Monk getting BOG for her effort and determination. Overall a great day with all 4 YCW netball teams having a win! Seaford Tigers Kangas vs tigers. This week the girls had to fight the elements in their first outdoor game for the season. Although the rain held off we weren’t so used the wind carrying the ball.. Well we will blame that for our wayward passes anyway haha. For a and b it seems the best on ground position was locked in to the wing dings with both shibsta and chan taking home the chocolates with solid performances. A grade had a 9 goal win with a new look team (completed with 53 fill ins - cheers for saving us yet again all of you) while b, c and d grade couldn’t seem to pick up where they left off last week. Saturday also kicked off our first social function for the year with the abc party - anything but clothes party for all you cherubs playing along at home. The night proved that the new recruits to the club can not only perform on the court but can star off the field as well. Lessons learnt; - beer bongs can be made out of mega sized witches hat (you don’t want to know where that has been Claire) - ditching a function after an hour to hang out with ya boyfriend or not rocking up at all; favouring a date night at the drive ins are both fine worthy offences - you can pull a hammy doing the running man (YouTube it if you’ve been living under a rock) PENINSULA 12 Mornington - Tyabb Road, Mornington Ph: 03 5971 0710 www.peninsulajeep.com.au www.peninsulafnl.com.au 26867 Peninsula 2016 R6.indd 27 27 11/05/16 4:23 PM Netball Notes Pines Pythonettes Just want to start off with a big Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums! To all that support us on the sidelines, to our coaches and all the ladies behind the scenes we couldn’t do it without you! And secondly want to congratulate one of our B grade girls Tina Tui who has been selected in the U/19’s interleague Squad who will play against Northern FNL on the 21st March. Tina is a strong player who’s capability to read the play down the court makes her a strong asset within the defensive half. We are very proud of you and know that you will represent Pines and the league well! Round 5 against YCW was just as difficult as expected but the girls should be proud of their effort. D grade started strong and with shooters out with injuries we were lacking a little within the attacking half, but that didn’t stop the girls from keeping their heads up. BOC Morgan. C grade again lacked the ability to convert any turnovers we got which meant that the margin really got away from us, the defensive pressure was strong as usual!. BOC Mel. B grade had one of their best games to date and at half time they had a 1 goal lead, but lost it in the second half. The girls have really improved on bringing the ball down the court and getting it in to the goalers. A grade’s defence is doing really well at putting pressure on every team that we have come up against so far! It is really starting to come together as a new team and we look forward to this week! BOC Maree Bonbeach Sharkettes Karingal Bullettes Four losses in one day ... that hasn’t happened since season 2014. In a windy day at Rowans Rd we took on the Eagles. D grade took to the court first without captain Bec & in a physical match, errors cost them. The deficit was to great to close eventually losing by 12. C grade lost captain Sara early in the match to injury & were without VC Renae - two extremely vocal & directive team members. The margain was a 17 goal loss at the final siren. Mel Cotta was a stand out - the silent assassin & calm under pressure! In the closest match of the day - B fought til the end narrowly losing by 2 in a hotly contested match. Jess Bird did well under pressure & as always Sara T was fierce through the mid court. Illness, injury & VNL hit our A squad hard this week & the scoreline reflected that. To the girls who stepped up & played double games - you should be commended. Not the result we wanted but we get a second crack at them round 17 at home. This Saturday we welcome Pines to the Bullpit & are seeking redemption for lasts weeks performances. Thermomix raffle is drawn today! Well done to Renae for organising & good luck to all who have purchased tickets. Trivia night tonight at the clubrooms. #GOBULLS #REDWHITEBOOM 28 26867 Peninsula 2016 R6.indd 28 Well well well what a week it was for the sharks, we may not have walked away with a win but the performance that was displayed on Saturday has proved how far our girls have come already this season. A message from our coaches “we couldn’t be prouder of the girls and the solid team efforts” all four teams have shown we are strong and competitive and the sharks are circling for their first win. A few stand out performances from Tania and Bre in defence for D grade and the mid court in C grade did a fantastic job bringing the ball down the court. The B grade game stayed tight majority of the game but slipped away a bit in the fourth quarter but it was an outstanding performance from shooters Georgia and Emma. A grade what a game the girls put on, every single one of you played your hearts out and you could see it, great round Sharks. Today we take on Chelsea, Best of luck and remember today is our Ladies day so come down and get involved from 12:30 at Shark Park. One last mention is to our number one supporter Deirdre Ades “Grandma” Happy 80th Birthday for the 18th of May, we wouldn’t be the club we are without your support and guidance. GO SHARKS!! www.peninsulafnl.com.au 11/05/16 4:23 PM Netball Notes Chelsea Seagulls With the wind so strong it was hard to get goals on Saturday. The girls put up a great effort to only go down to a top 3 team by 15. Rach Mclennon was a star in GK. Her intensity and effort was the result of so many turnovers. Hayley H went hard at the ball all game, showing heart and what Chelsea is all about. A hard day out in the wind for the B ladies this week. We had times of brilliance but these were not enough against a well-oiled Mornington. Thanks to all players this week for giving it your all. Tough windy game against Mornington. We started off slow which gave them a chance to stretch the lead. We welcomed Brodie and Lauren who debuted in the team and played strong with intercepts and continuing to offer down court. Casey was a star in the ring as GS. Our 2nd & 3rd quarter was our best and we really worked hard and gave 100%. The Sun was shining, girls ready, perfect day for netball. We had been working on our defence and this is how we took home a three point win. Georgia Manning stood out and forced her player out of the game. Great day gulls keep up the good work. Mornington Bulldogs Good job Bodsy. Jinxed the day with quote at 8am “What a beautiful day. Sun is shining and not a breath of wind.” Maybe not at 8am but certainly was at 12pm. Our visit to Dingley courts, albeit a good day on the winning list, but not for the sun and wind burn received. We welcomed another junior, Sophie Baker, who is a versatile tall defender or shooter. Ainsley and Bec put lots of pressure on opponents with Steph accurate in goals. It took us until the second half, again, to settle and we beat the Seagulls 14 to 8 in D grade, only going down by 3. With a “mixed bag” of players in C we worked all combinations well and won each quarter convincingly. Erin was on fire at C with Gabby excelling at both GA and GD. Well done coaches for supporting each other and getting the best players onto the court. And again in B grade we built on each quarter with our defenders Eliza and Meg keeping the Seagulls to minimal scoring. Britt and Holly struggled under the cyclonic winds but had the height to rebound their own shots. Grace provided plenty of drive at WD and set up a terrific win. In A the wind maximised to 100km and Sarah managed to shoot accurately in the first half setting up a strong lead of 18. Candace and Alex were relentless in defence. A scrappy third quarter had all mid-courters doing lots of work with only 5 goals to each side. Same in the last, it was low scoring 7 to 6. Special mention to Neil for his ball retrievals throughout the A grade game. WOOF WOOF Mt Eliza Red Legs Round 5 saw Mt Eliza take on Bonbeach at Home. We started the day with a Mother’s Day breakfast & the positives continued with another dominant performance & 4 wins on the board. D GRADE had some sharp skills on display; they were dominant in defence limiting the Sharks scoring opportunities. Bec L played well in the mid court to deliver the ball well into goals. In a great team effort Mounties won 50-18. C GRADE asserted their control over the game from the start; they took away the win 59-25 in what was an excellent display across the whole court. Lauren D & Kate P were great in defence while Marcie, Lauren M & Bec combined well in goals. B GRADE aimed to continue the winning trend & although they did not have their best start it was clear that the intensity would outlast the Sharks as the game went on. The defensive pressure applied caused our opposition to make errors while we were able to maintain our composure & play smart netball to win the game 47-33. Steph H was excellent in goals while Tess offered great support in WA. The A GRADE game started goal for goal, with an early injury to Allana the depth of the team was on display with a seamless entry into this position by Abbey. At the 1/4 time break we went in with the momentum & it was a case of playing smart netball to out run the already tired Sharks. We continued to apply relentless pressure & widened the winning margin as the game progressed. Abbey starred in goals while Jess was a force in the mid court. Another solid performance by the A grade team saw them walk away with a convincing 61-40 goal win. This week we take on Seaford at Linen House – GO MOUNTIES! Langwarrin Kangaroos It was a day of high hopes and dreams. It was a day of focus and goals. We all had a plan and it was going to be accomplished. The president promised us all a free drink up at the club rooms if all 4 teams won. It was looking good, real good. D grade took the court with gusto, precision passing and were defensively tight. C grade were a bit shakey but got their mojo and starting using their body strength but more importantly their patience to take out the game. B grade sailed through the game without much challenge. Our goalers just nailed it. 3 down and only one game to go. I got my inner William Wallace on and fired up the A graders with clear cut instructions to not let their club down, their sisters were thirsty and in four quarters time we would all be parched no longer! And it didn’t happen. Unfortunately a game that was really ours to take was not taken. So there we all were parched. Left high and dry but eager for our next chance to get our free drink from our president. It’s a Thursday night game for us this week V the doggies this week so hopefully under lights we will be victorious and it will be drinks all round. We look forward to Saturday free to enjoy the footy and help cheer our boys on for a seven from seven win.
