“Field Trial Vs. Hunting Dogs”
By Charlie Rose
Part 2
My primary business is guiding wild bird hunts here in Texas on Bob White and Scaled quail, I
knew the dogs were as hard to beat as any at what we do, and with some extra encouragement
as to my training ability from Lou, and long time friend and Training partner Keith Hickam (all
breed trainer and owner of the best Llewellyn Setter I have ever seen) I decided to give it a
Whirl.
Keith spent most of the winter down here training dogs last year, guiding a few hunts for me
and running his and his client dogs in a few trials. Keith may not have the national reputation
of some of the other trainers named here but he’s one of the smartest dog men I have ever
known and a truly gifted trainer, who has already achieved significant success in his few years
as a trial trainer and competitor, so far topped off by his dog Tanner winning the Midwest Llewellyn Shooting Dog Championship in 05, which is for all practical purposes the Llewellyn’s
National Championship. During my rare days off from guiding I spent as much time as possible with Keith and Lou (who also shared my camp for much of the winter) and so I was able to
glean a great deal from these two wizened pros about trialing.
Even though both Keith and Lou told me it would be a near impossibility for most people to
do so with dogs that had not been trained steady to wing and shot at a much younger age, I first
began the “breaking process” with Moose and after again some encouragement from Lou Bullett as well.
This transition was made possible I think only because I have always whoa trained dogs for
safety and control reasons, and in the last few years have incorporated stop to flush training as
well. Even though each of these dogs had been allowed to break on the rise through several
thousand wild bird flushes I set my mind on steadying them to wing and shot seriously in
March of this year. This transition is still in progress but we’ve managed to get both of these
dogs around cleanly (no chasing flushed birds) in several trials, and even managed a placement
with Bullett in a very tough “major stake”. These two boys may never be as Lou calls it “Over
the Hill broke”, but they are becoming reliable enough at standing dead steady to make competent showings in trials. I mention this only to assuage any apprehensions you other hunters
might have about trying to do the same thing with your dogs. With quality dogs, patience, and
some help from more experienced trial handlers making that transition is NOT impossible.
After much reading and discussion with trial trainers, I see the value now in allowing young
pups to simply be young pups the first year. Sure we work on the basics of introducing them
Continued next page
to planted birds and the gun young, but with very little demanding of strict discipline, other
than making sure the pups are very reliable to “here”. Honestly if you have a dog completely reliable on just “whoa” and “here”, nearly anything can be accomplished down the
road in training.
Mostly today I let the young dogs run on wild birds to their hearts content until they begin
pointing on their own, then working occasionally back and forth on planted birds for polish.
Most trial trainers prefer this approach because it allows the DOG to train himself essentially and you avoid any issues of breaking the dogs desire and will and causing corresponding problems with style such as “flagging” on point, which is a definite no-no in field trialing. Training for more steadiness/staunchness beyond this point is best reserved for after the
pups first full hunting season if you truly want to see the dog develop as naturally as possible and to avoid issues of over dependence (upon the handler) and again style issues such as
flagging on point. A more mature dog, with a good bit of experience and a ton of desire will
take the pressure of “breaking” much better.
No trial format that exists today truly evaluates ALL the best attributes of dogs. There can
be no question about that, however AKC and FDSB trials as which are by far the most popular across the country indeed do evaluate a great many things I find important in a dog.
These trial organizations have recognized the need to bring new people into the “trial game”
and both as well as the AFTCA, US complete and several other trial organizations have
greatly expanded their “walking trials” in order to do so. These walking trials allow only for
the judges to be mounted rather than both handlers and judges mounted, though many also
allow for a mounted scout (looks for the dog if the dog is out of sight of the judges and handler). AKC amateur walking stakes are as welcoming and friendly to newcomers as they
can be and you will find a host of people at nearly all of these events bending over backwards to welcome and help you along.
No matter whether I’m walking behind a dog guiding a hunt here in Texas, or riding behind
him in a trial in KS or NM at any range my dogs MUST work FOR me. It takes a fluid and
cooperative effort for man and dog to be most effective in the field whether trialing or hunting. This is a concept lost in much discussion of trial vs. hunting dogs.
AKC Gun Dog Stakes, and even Some American Field Shooting dog stakes really are supposed to be about dog working at ranges that many if not most experienced pointing dog
handlers/hunters would not shy away from. All Age Dogs (the biggest running in all venues) are something totally apart and separate from even the gun dogs and shooting dogs and
are indeed “in a league of their own”.
