Animals Sing Aloha
by Vera Arita; illustrated by Ron Louie
This ground-breaking book is specifically designed to begin introducing young children to
phonics through a vibrantly illustrated text that can be read or sung to an original musical
score by the author, Vera Arita. It’s such a fun, whimsical book that kids won’t even know
they’re learning. As a special education teacher for over 25 years, Arita wanted to share a
book that would help kids remember how to sound-out letters through repetition, visual cues,
movement.
Each letter can be traced by hand. By doing so, your child will learn how to write the letter
and will also remember the name and sound of the letter through his/her movement. The
text, so simple and so fun, repeats the sound of the letter, and the beautiful, whimsical
illustrations by Ron Louie help put a picture to the sound.
But besides the learning involved, this is a fun, colorful board book just for local kids with
animals, things, and places they can relate to.

Can You Catch a Coqui Frog?
by Vera Arita
illustrated by Edna Cabcabin Moran
Can You Catch a Coqui Frog is a colorful introduction to some of Hawai‘i’s most well-known
animals from the titled coqui frog to the monk seal. The rhyme can be sung to the popular
tune, “Do Your Ears Hang Low?”
Can you catch a coqui frog as he’s sitting on a log?
Can you hear him in the night with a croak so high and bright?
Children will love discovering the various animals, and imaginations are sure to sparkle as
they use all their senses to think about these island creatures. After time spent discovering,

Hawai‘i Rainbow Football: A Story of Faith, Hope and Redemption
by J. David Miller
Hawai‘i sits in the middle of the ocean like a gigantic chunk of blue-green gemstone that has
been cut whole and set neatly into place. Sparkling at its center is the radiance of a Top 20
college football program that experts said was absolutely impossible to build.
Ostracized and shunned for years by the college football powers-that-be, the Warriors talent
has overcome such bias: They have crashed the pious gates of self-righteous coaches, fans
and media forcing the world to recognize their staggering accomplishments.
With Coach June Jones at the helm since 1999, the Warriors have played in five bowl
games, led the country in offense, twice groomed 10 All-Americans, 56 all-conference
performers and 16 NFL draft picks including five drafted in 2007. Jones has, in his own
words, done it with mirrors miraculously assembling one of the most talented, disciplined
football teams against
insurmountable odds.
The most authoritative and significant book in the history of the University of Hawai‘i football,
Hawaii Warrior Football: A Story of Faith, Hope and Redemption is drawn directly from
authorized inside sources during quarterback Colt Brennan’s backstretch sprint for the
Heisman Trophy.
This uniquely Hawaiian book with its powerful vortex of football passion and people will pull
in the most casual reader for the ride of a lifetime.

How Six Little Ipu Got Their Names
by Debi Brimmer and Julie Coleson
This original tale of hold hands and stick together traces the footsteps of six young bottle
gourds from the emerald green valley of their birth to the loving arms of their new vines - six
young students of hula who live far from the little gourds homeland.
This book is an imaginative look into the life story of a hula implement. Separated from their
vines at a tender age, the little gourds are taken to the home of a local implement maker.
There they meet Uncle Ka Leo, a grand and grumpy ipu heke, who gives them tantalizing
glimpses of what they someday may become. Even though the little gourds are frightened
and insecure, sticking together gives them the courage that carries them safely through their
many adventures. While one of the little gourds is constantly worried that his imperfection will
be his downfall, it turns out in the end, as it does for many of us, that his imperfection is what
makes him special and unique.
As the hula students learn about their new implements, the little gourds learn about
themselves as well. Once each girl finds the ipu hula they feel is really, really theirs, the little
gourds find that they, too, have re-captured their long-lost feelings of being connected. In
spite of life’s uncertainties and insecurities, this story reminds us all that happy endings are
possible even in the most unexpected of places.

In the Company of Strangers
by Michelle Cruz Skinner
Sixteen deceptively simple stories comprise Michelle Cruz Skinner’s much-anticipated
follow-up to Balikbayan and Mango Seasons, many of them about Filipinos tonguetied
and alienated in the motherland, or scattered across the map of heartaches and
homesickness in the company of strangers called countrymen, family, lovers. A book
of quiet gems definitely worth the wait. - R. Zamora Linmark, author of Prime Time
Apparitions and The Evolution of a Sigh
The essential subject of these captivating stories is memory, but memory filtered by
what cannot–or even should not–be said. The corrosive effects of a secret history, the
burdens of understanding, are limned through stories both spare and lyrical. In a way,
these stories tell a kind of love story: the love of a daughter for a heritage that, even
while suppressed or denied, can never be erased. - Marianne Villanueva, author of
Ginseng and Other Tales from Manila and Mayor of the Roses: Stories
Michelle Cruz Skinner shows us again that exile sometimes captures the body and
sometime the heart; she writes closely about love and life in a family, and we see that
distance, longing and desire all can contribute to the things misplaced in translation. Ron Carlson, author of Five Skies and The Signal
Evocatively written. Deftly offers how life can unfold as a series of uncertain transitions.
But redemption can surface when one realizes through these stories how much we
share with each other. - Eileen Tabios, author of novel Chatelaine
Michelle Cruz Skinner teaches at Punahou School. She was born in Manila and raised
primarily in Olongapo City, Philippines. A short story from her first collection was
selected for the PEN Syndicated Fiction Project, and her second book was nominated
for the 1996 Philippine National Book Award. Her work has been adapted for stage and
public radio and she has read extensively at universities and conferences, both in the
Philippines and on the mainland.

Islands Linked By Ocean
Lisa Linn Kanae
From the author of SISTA TONGUE come stories written with humor and compassion that
give voice to characters who find themselves at crossroad moments where past informs
present, young teach old and love can mean holding on or letting go. In “The Steersman,”
a novice paddler shares her tempestuous yet life-affirming introduction to the tradition of
outrigger canoe paddling: “…in the canoe, we were nameless. We were numbers, and when
we weren’t numbers, we were random expletives—scrub, donkey, idiot, stupid, jackass, lame
ass, dumb ass....” In “Born Again Hawaiian,” a young husband discovers how the personal
impacts the political when his activist wife shows him how he must fight for what he loves
most. And what happens when three local women take in the opera? “Dat suckah Pavarotti—
he get um.”
The stories in this collection are familiar, like family. And like the father and daughter in the
title story, the stories in ISLANDS LINKED BY OCEAN are “told and retold until the words
swim through the listener’s veins and turn into blood.”

Published in Hawaiian in 1906, this is one of only a handful of historical accounts by a native
Hawaiian. Presented in the same language and dialect which were spoken in west Kaua`i
during the annexation, this DVD is a rare record of authentic Hawaiian fluency. This is also
a student production- students helped to script, act and produce- and proceeds from the film
go back to this charter school to benefit the students

DVD Lahaina: Waves of Change
Eddie & Myrna Kamae
DVD
Waves of Change will change the way that you see and think of Lahaina forever. Whether
you are a visitor to the islands or home grown, you will be captivated and enriched by this
film. Lahaina will forever be more than one of the most beautiful and exotic places on earth,
but one that spiritually connects the Hawaiian people from ancient times to present day.
In 1999 Hawaiian Music legend and documentary filmmaker Eddie Kamae visited the West
Maui town of Lahaina, only to find that Pioneer Mill, the center of Lahaina’s sugar industry,
was closing down. Eddie knew that this signaled the end of Lahaina’s plantation era – a
simpler, more innocent time that he remembered fondly from the childhood summers he
spent in the area visiting his grandmother. He knew that a change as momentous as this
needed to be documented, so he immediately hired a crew to film the last harvest, the last
cane burning, and the final days of operation at Pioneer Mill.

Hard Cover, 32 pages
This children’s book is an endearing story about an ordinary family pet that proves to be an
extraordinarily clever dog. Most dogs can sit, roll over and fetch a ball. Our clever dog has
figured out how to balance a biscuit on his nose, open the fridge and log on to a computer
– but what he’d really like to learn is how to drive a car so that he can explore his home,
the Hawaiian Islands. Renowned Hawai‘i artist Pegge Hopper lends her extraordinary
talent to her first children’s book. Hopper’s colorful illustrations bring excitement to every
page of the book. From her detailed drawings of clever dog to her recreations of popular
island destinations, Hopper manages to take the reader on clever dog’s journey around the

Hawaiian Family Album
Mutual Publishing
Matthew Kaopio
Soft Cover, 51 pages
When a young Matthew Ka‘opio asked his grandmother, Pearl Leilani White, about
`aumakua, she got angry. “We don’t believe in those things anymore,” she scolded. “We are
Christian, and there is only one God!” While the grandparents of other children in school
spoke freely about their family heritage, Matthew’s grandmother, for some reason, seemed
ashamed of hers. But later in her life when her short-term memory had begun to fail, she
returned to the old days and shared the once-forbidden stories with her grandson.
In Hawaiian Family Album, Ka‘opio presents eleven of his grandmother’s stories, each
accompanied by a vibrant mouth-brush painting. The stories in this collection are
heartwarming, funny and scary. They tell of a time in Hawai‘i when clouds foretold the
events of the day, and animals had the power to protect or curse.

Written and produced by Vivian Ducat
Executive producer: Margaret Drain
DVD, 30 min.
Lili‘uokalani, who ruled Hawai‘i in the late 1800s, moved easily between two worlds. Although
deeply rooted in Hawaiian tradition, the queen dined at the White House and visited with
European royalty. But as the American business community in Hawai‘i grew stronger,
Lili‘uokalani found herself trapped between the two worlds and witnessed the monarchy
slip away. This DVD comes with printable materials for educators, access to the American
Experience web site, scene selection and closed captions.

He Mele Aloha: A Hawaiian Songbook
Oli Oli Productions
Compiled by Carol Wilcox
Musical Notation by Vicky Hollinger & Kimo Hussey
Orthography & Translation by Puakea Nogelmeier
spiralbound, 289p
This book is a long-awaited reference, well-arranged and indexed and with ukulele
chord diagrams for each song. There are classic Hawaiian songs by Queen Lili‘uokalani,
Charles King and others. There are also a few hapa haole songs and songs, or “mele,” by
contemporary composers such as Puakea Nogelmeier (who provided the translations for
the book), Keali’i Reichel and Dennis Kamakahi. There are some who have wished that the
book came with a CD, but as of now, it does not. However, this is an indispensible resource
of classic Hawaiian songs, for lovers of the Ukulele and of Hawaiian music. If you are outside
the Hawaiian music community, most, if not all of the music, can be found on CD and
through audio clips on-line. A few helpful resources are: mele.com and huapala.org.

Hina: The Goddess (2nd Ed.)
Petroglyph Press
SC, 56 pages
Dietrich Varez
Petroglyph Press presents a new edition of its much–loved and (until now) out–of–print book,
Hina, The Goddess. Born on a stormy night full of intrigue and mystery, Hina, The Goddess
has origins almost as wondrous as the tales of Hina herself. While viewing a performance
of the powerful and ancient Kahiko form of hula at the 1986 Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo,
the audience had an unforgettable experience. A raging storm swept over Hilo. Thunder
clapped and lightning struck, plunging the entire town of Hilo, including the festival, into utter
darkness. Many wondered if it was mere coincidence that the evening’s events included
a compulsory chant for the wahine which spoke of Hina and the gourd calabash in which
she captured three windstorms. Known for her forceful ways and power over the physical
world, Hina is not to be taken lightly. One halau took this sign from the heavens so seriously
that they withdrew from the competition. Dietrich Varez was so struck by this incident and
the power of the chant, he was inspired to create the first of the block prints appearing in
Hina, The Goddess picturing Hina with her calabash. As his interest was piqued, he went
on to delve further into the mythology of Hina in her many forms. From his research, he was
inspired to create a series of block prints representing the many amazing and varied tales
associated with Hina.

How did far-off Hawai‘i become a part of America? Suppressed for nearly 100 years, the
story is known to few…
In 1886, following the tragic deaths of her father and fiancé, Laura Jennings is now alone in her
world travels to Hawai‘i to live with missionary relatives. Laura imagines she’ll live in a grass

being savages, the Hawaiians have developed a charming and prosperous kingdom
– and Laura’s family is among the wealthy elite plotting to overthrow the monarchy.
To avoid her conniving uncle’s control, Laura goes to work for the royal family and learns her
relatives’ prejudices against them are unfounded. As Hawai‘i’s last queen, Lili‘uokalani,
struggles heroically to save the kingdom, the Missionary Party intensifies its opposition. The

Nation Within: The History of the American Occupation of Hawai‘i
Author: Tom Coffman
Publisher: Koa Books
Soft Cover, 347 pages
America’s long century of imperial adventures began with the illegal occupation of Hawai‘i.
As the nineteenth century waned, Hawai‘i’s missionary descendants and America’s
diplomatic representatives incessantly pressured the royal government for ever-increasing
control, eventually overthrowing Hawai‘i’s monarch. In Nation Within, journalist/historian Tom
Coffman tells the heartfelt story of Hawai‘i’s resistance to annexation, both in Washington
and Honolulu, and the role of Theodore Roosevelt and others who fueled America’s drive for
global power. The Nation Magazine calls Nation Within “the best single book” on America’s
occupation of Hawai‘i.

The Book of Honu: Enjoying and Learning About Hawai‘i’s Sea Turtles
by Peter Bennett; Ursula Keuper-Bennett
This is the first guide to finding and observing Hawaiian green turtles, or honu. It describes
an exciting journey of discovery undertaken by two avid sports divers, Peter Bennett and
Ursula Keuper-Bennett, who encountered their first honu twenty years ago while diving off
Honokowai, Maui. The Bennetts soon realized that many honu (and green turtles worldwide)
were afflicted with debilitating and potentially deadly tumors. They began to document the
disease using photographs and videotape and in the process educated themselves about the
daily lives of honu. To their surprise, they discovered they were the first to make prolonged
observations of a marine turtle population in its natural habitat.
