“Don’t give in to misfortune,” the family motto
of Stags’ Leap founder Horace Chase and a
befitting moniker for this southern Rhône-style
wine. The old field blend vineyard located on
the Estate features vines that are more than 70
years old. This stubborn yet graceful vineyard
has survived countless assaults over the years
and somehow continues to produce a small lot
of wine that offers extraordinary depth and
complexity year after year.

these historic Napa Valley vineyards. Growing
amongst the head-trained Petite Syrah vines
can be found Carignane, Mourvedre, Grenache,
Peloursin, Syrah, Viognier, and lesser amounts of
nine other varietals. Each harvest the grapes from
this special lot are hand-picked, cofermented
and aged in seasoned oak barrels until ready for
release, to produce a true Field Blend.

The 2004 growing season was defined by close
to perfect conditions in Napa Valley. Stags’
Leap Winery experienced a warm spring, which
brought about early bloom in most vineyards.
Summer temperatures remained steady with the
exception of a few hot days in June, and the long
hang time contributed to concentrated, fully
mature fruit with perfect acidity.
This rich, brooding wine offers complex aromatics
of ripe black fruit, dark chocolate roasted
chestnuts and a hint of charred meat. Enticing
flavors of juicy black cherries, blackberry and
cocoa powder integrate with smoky spice as
structured tannins carry the velvety fruit through
for a long finish.
