For those not familier with the course, it could be defined as a philosophy that helps people learn how to live life through love rather than fear. A diverse group attended the weekly meetings. One week the topic was related to a section in the text about messengers of God. I made the statement that Hitler was an Angel – a messenger of God. His was not an easy message. It was one to show people how dark they can become. This started a rather lively conversation to say the least. One member of the group, a school teacher, told me several years later that he almost walked out on the group due to that contention about Hitler. I guess a lot of people look at Angels as divine beings and believe that their function is to protect us and keep us safe. People commonly think their messages are all filled with bliss and joy. But not all messages are happy ones. Sometimes we get messages from people that shake us up and strike a nerve or two. But, perhaps that is just as necessary as a message of how lovable, kind and generous we are or can be. I would contend that whatever message we get is to bring us closer to God. Or perhaps to find that we need not go anywhere to get closer or to “find” God, but to just go within. I find it interesting that every major religion talks about Angels as being something other than human. Maybe that’s true. But my feeling is that we all are Angels – here to serve each other. Sometimes that service means you get the tough job. Just like Hitler. May we all find our own angelic presence in this life experience. Coined MedMob, based on the Flash Mobs that have formed around the world, has now flourished into a wave of energy, connecting anyone and everyone to the power of meditation. The MedMob movement is designed to create an environment for people from all walks of life to come together in meditation. The hope is to expose others through public displays of the practice, to come together as a community to send positive intentions out into the world and to show this by example. All participants are equal, in that there is no leader or “official” host, all ages are welcome and there is nothing being sold. Cleveland, Ohio has organized an extension of the MedMob and had their first participants on the Shores of Lake Erie on Sunday, May 29. Edgewater Park, near Downtown Cleveland, was the setting. The group will continue to meet on the LAST Sunday of every month in the same location at noon. To keep informed, visit MedMob: Cleveland, OH on Facebook or www.MedMob.org. Nevertheless, the angel has been important to the Christian faith since its conception, and there are almost 300 references to angels in the Bible in some 280 different verses, making it very much a feature of the religion. While the exact nature and status of the angel in Christianity is far from settled, it is appreciated as a critical part of the Bible and the Christian faith. Likewise, angels are present in most other religions and play a part in somewhat more diverse faiths and individual beliefs. Angels in The Bible The concept of guardian angels, or angels sent down from heaven to look over the individual and prevent harm, is one that can be found throughout the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament - “See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my father in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). There are no specifics in the Bible about the hierarchy of angels or how they would function at a practical level. Indeed, there is an assumption (but no real definition) that they would act with a particular individual, and would be assigned the ‘mission’ of protecting that person from sin and deviance. the Journey The Front Porch Angels and Judaism The Jewish belief in angels goes as far back as the Book of Genesis, where we read about angels calling out to Abraham at the binding of Isaac, angels appearing in Jacob’s dream, Jacob fighting with an angel, and many more accounts of angelic activity. Angels are then mentioned numerous times throughout the other books of the Torah, Prophets, and Scriptures. According to Jewish tradition, an angel is a spiritual being and does not have any physical characteristics. The angelic descriptions provided by the prophets – such as wings, arms etc. – are anthropomorphic, referring to their spiritual abilities and tasks. “Every blade of grass has an angel that bends over it and whispers, ‘grow! grow!’” ~ Talmud Angels and Hinduism and Buddhism In Hinduism and Buddhism, angels are known as ‘devas’ and thought to be spiritual beings with emanations of light/energy. The Hindu’s belief of devas, is that their purpose is to help humans on their spiritual path and sometimes even block that path. Buddhists view the devas as beings who will not intervene with human life. The angels are thoughts of love sent from God. Since God is continuously expressing loving thoughts, there are an infinite number of angels. They are very real messengers, sent by God, to help us feel peace and joy.” ~ Doreen Virtue the Journey Cleveland Pagan Pride Day August 27, 2011 Awaken the Change Cleveland Pagan Pride Day 2010 was a fantastic experience featuring local musical and dance talent. We welcomed between 500-700 people, all who came to sate their curiosity about Paganism. There were workshops and vendors catering to the many branches of the old way, an opening ritual which ended with the sound of a Native American flute. A closing ritualistic parade saw upwards of 100 people joining in. Cleveland Pagan Pride Day 2011 is much anticipated within the esoteric communities. A follow up to CPPD 2010 has been much talked about through the wintry months. This year’s fundraising events have received overwhelming support from our growing community. We have seen a concert event at Maple Grove Tavern, Pagan Nights Out at Cici’s Pizza and Applebee’s, a psychic fair at Spirit Apothecary, and a Pagan BBQ at Prince of Patchouli. CPPD 2011 will see more top tier entertainment, workshops and eclectic rituals throughout the day. We will have the area’s finest vendors, psychics, and food. We offer tee-shirts and bumper stickers for sale, at all of our events, so all of our friends may display them with pride! All of our many friends that have supported us, we offer a special THANK YOU! Cleveland Pagan Pride 2011 is your festival event! Why should I fear? When was I less by dying? Yet once more I shall die as man to soar With angels blest. But even from an angel I must pass on: all except God must perish. When I have sacrificed my angel soul, I shall become what no mind ever conceived.” ~ Rumi Angels and Islam Believing in the unseen world of angels is an important part of Islam it is the second pillar of belief, after believing in Allah (God). The angels are being that we cannot see but we know them as much as Allah told us in His book (the Qur’an), or His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) informed us. Allah created the angels from light as stated by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “The angels were created from light, the Jinn (demons) were created from dark flames of fire…” Angels are completely obedient to Allah and worship Him alone and Muslims do not worship angels since they among Allah’s creatures and also have no power to do either good or harm, except by the Will of Allah. Even though angels were created before humans they had been ordered to prostrate to Adam. Allah says: “And when we said to the angels prostrate to Adam and they did…” (Qur’an 18:50) Muslims believe in specific angels mentioned in the Islamic sources like Jibreel (Gabriel), Mika’eel (Michael), Israfeel, Malik - the guard over Hell, and others. Of these, only Gabriel and Michael are mentioned in the Bible. No one knows the number of angels. Allah says: “No one knows the number of your Lord’s soldiers except Him” (Qur’an 74:31) Some angels are put in charge of executing God’s laws in the physical world. Michael is responsible for rain and directing it wherever Allah (God) wishes. He has helpers who assist him by the command of his Lord (Allah); they direct the winds and clouds as God wills. Another angel is Israfeel who is responsible for blowing the Horn at the onset of the Day of Judgment. The Angel of Death and his assistants are responsible for taking souls out of the bodies at the time of death. This saint went about his daily life diffusing virtue as the stars diffuse light and the flowers scent, without being aware of it. His day could be summed up by two words -- he gave, he forgave -- yet these words never passed his lips. They were expressed in his ready smile, his kindness, forbearance, and charity. The angels said to God, “Lord, grant him the gift of miracles.” God replied, “Ask what it is that he wishes.” They said to the saint, “Would you like the touch of your hands to heal the sick?” “No,” answered the saint. “I would rather God do that.” “Would you like to convert guilty souls and bring back wandering hearts to the right path?” “No, that is the angels’ mission. It is not for me to convert.” “Would you like to become a model of patience, attracting men by the luster of your virtues, and thus glorifying God?” “No,” replied the saint. “If men should be attracted to me, they would become estranged from God.” “What is it that you desire, then?” asked the angels. “What can I wish for?” asked the saint smiling. “That God gives me his grace; with that would I not have everything?” The angels said, “You must ask for a miracle, or one will be forced upon you.” “Very well,” said the saint. “That I may do a great deal of good without ever knowing it.” The angels were perplexed. They took counsel and resolved upon the following plan: every time the saint’s shadow fell behind him or to either side, so that he could not see it, it would have the power to cure disease, soothe pain, and comfort sorrow. When the saint walked along, his shadow, thrown on the ground on either side or behind him, made arid paths green, caused withered plants to bloom, gave clear water to dried-up brooks, fresh color to pale children, and joy to unhappy men and women. The saint simply went about his daily life diffusing virtue as the stars diffuse light and the flowers scent, without being aware of it. The people, respecting his humility, followed him silently, never speaking to him about his miracles. Soon they even forgot his name, and called him “The Holy Shadow.” This is the ultimate: one has to become the holy shadow, just a shadow of God. This is the greatest revolution that can happen to a human being: the transfer of the center. You are no longer your own center; God becomes your center. You live like his shadow. You are not powerful, because you don’t have any center to be powerful. You are not virtuous; you don’t have any center to be virtuous. You are not even religious; you don’t have any center to be religious. You are simply not, a tremendous emptiness, with no barriers and blocks, so the divine can flow through you unhindered, uninterpreted, untouched -- so the divine can flow through you as he is, not as you would like him to be. He does not pass through your center -- there is none. The center is lost. This is the meaning of this story: that finally you have to sacrifice your center so you cannot think in terms of the ego again, you cannot utter “I,” to annihilate yourself utterly, to erase yourself utterly. Nothing belongs to you; on the contrary, you belong to God. You become a holy shadow. List of Websites with Interesting Angel Information: Read Me! Or a sign from my angels? “Y our angels have a nickname for you,” she told me, “they call you ‘Morning Glory’.” It was August 2009 and I was seeking the counsel of a spiritual medium. My mother had died three months earlier, and I was searching for ways to communicate with her. The nickname was strange, I thought, and didn’t have any meaning for me. When I left the session I telephoned Michael, a recently discovered soul mate. Michael is a photographer and has his own studio building in an urban location. I told him about the strange nickname. I have chosen to label myself as “spiritual but not religious.” The label is nebulous enough that I can define it (and redefine it) however I choose. That’s what faith means to me: a personal belief system developed through a lifetime of experience. It is not something anyone can prove or disprove. That’s what makes it faith. “Wow,” he said, “You’re not going to believe this, but just last week a huge bunch of Morning Glories took root in my sidewalk and they’re growing all over the front of my studio. I don’t know where they came from, they’ve never been there before.” That was one of many “coincidences” that have occurred since my mother died, that have made me firmly believe in angels. I was raised in a Catholic household, but as an adult I have chosen not to follow any faith. I have chosen instead to label myself as “spiritual but not religious.” The label is nebulous enough that I can define it (and redefine it) however I choose. That’s what faith means to me: a personal belief system developed through a lifetime of experience. It is not something anyone can prove or disprove. That’s what makes it faith. But even though I had been calling myself “spiritual” I’d never had any direct connection with the spirit world. That is, until my mother died and the coincidences began. But the coincidences have been so personally meaningful, and so statistically impossible, that I have chosen to see them as direct signs from my angels. My Page 12 By Judith Eugene wonderfully nebulous belief system lets me do that with great peace of mind. Connecting with Michael was the first of these coincidences. Michael’s brother happened to die on the same day as my mother. I had been living out-of-state but happened to be back in my hometown for my mother’s funeral. I happened to go to a certain restaurant, I happened to pick up a local newspaper there, and I happened to see an article about the passing of Michael’s brother. I had known Michael in high school, so I called him to offer my condolences. We met for dinner and figured out then that we were soul mates. Of course there was no way to prove it, we just felt it. As Elton Trueblood said, “Faith is not belief without proof, but trust without reservation.” We trusted without reservation. Perhaps one of the reasons my mother and his brother died at their particular moment was so we could meet and experience the bounty of life in a way that only soul mates can. No coincidence. A sign. My mother told me, through the spiritual medium, that she would send me butterflies and dragonflies as signs to let me know she is still near. That night, I was looking through my mother’s books in her apartment and found her journal. It had butterflies and dragonflies July • August 2011 the Journey on the cover. Coincidence? No, a sign. Michael came over the next morning and I showed him my journal discovery. We opened it together, and there were four hearts doodled on the first page. Michael ran into the next room and came back with a piece of paper on which he had just doodled the same four hearts, in the exact same style and pattern, minutes before. “What does it mean?” I asked. Four-one: The security code to get into my mother’s apartment; the latitude of my hometown – the city my mother loved so much and the place where I met my soul mate. The number 41 continues to appear in my life regularly. Coincidence? No. A sign. “Four hearts – you, me, your Mom and my brother,” Michael said. Then he added, “From four hearts – one.” We cried. Four-one: The security code to get into my mother’s apartment; the latitude of my hometown – the city my mother loved so much and the place where I met my soul mate. The number 41 continues to appear in my life regularly. Coincidence? No. A sign. the Journey Two months later, Michael’s brother – whom I had never met in life – came to me in a dream with a message to pass along to Michael. Somehow I just knew it was him. I trusted without reservation. The dream took place in an unusually large picnic shelter that I had never seen before. But when I told Michael, he said: “I know exactly the place you’re talking about.” He emailed me a picture of a picnic shelter where he and his brother regularly went when they were little. It was, of course, the same one as in my dream. Coincidence? No. A sign. When I met with the spiritual medium I asked how to communicate with those who have passed on. She said to simply ask them for a sign. For a whole year I had been receiving signs –without asking. But now I needed help. I was considering leaving my job to move back home to start my own business. I thought it was the right decision but I wanted reassurance. I asked for a sign. The following morning, though I was alone in the house, I woke up to the smell of blueberry muffins baking. The day before, I had just been talking to a friend about how much I love blueberry muffins. Later that day I received a layoff notice from work, which alleviated my uncertainty about leaving. On the way home from work, a car pulled up next to me; my mother’s name was written on the side. And in case I still didn’t get it, when I stopped at the grocery store on the way home, there was a book on display in the checkout line: The Complete Idiot’s Guide To Connecting With Your Angels. With a worldwide reputation, she has written more than 20 books about angels, chakras, Crystal Children, Indigo Children, health and diet, and other mind-body-spirit issues. Doreen, who holds B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in counseling psychology, was the founder and former director of WomanKind Psychiatric Hospital at Cumberland Hall Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. As a child, she was a natural clairvoyant, seeing and conversing with what many people call “invisible friends” – an ability that she only came to understand and embrace as an adult. She will make a headline appearance at the ninth annual Journey Expo Cleveland, Sept. 9-11. It will be her first appearance in the area in more than a decade. Starr: In one of your videos you offered a quote by Sheldon Kopp that resonated with me: “I’ve never begun any important venture for which I felt adequately prepared.” I feel that’s something we all struggle with. Virtue: Absolutely, right now is a time when many people feel called to make important life changes, involvPage 14 ing career, where they live, their relationships, how they treat their bodies – and it’s all about aligning yourself with your truth and integrity and no longer compromising. I think deep down everyone knows what path would be highest for them, but a lot of people struggle with their ego and unworthiness, procrastination, perfectionism and things like that. It’s all very normal but the key is, Do you let it control you or not? Truly living according to your higher self is the key to health and happiness. Not only [for] ourselves but [also] part of the ego’s responsibility to the world. Imagine a world where everyone is aligned, peaceful, healthy and happy – it just takes the burden off of all of us, and really does create peace on earth. Starr: Can you talk more about not compromising when it comes to finding your life purpose? Virtue: It’s the number one question I receive; I will be definitely talking about this when I’m in Cleveland and taking questions. Deep down we all have the same purpose, which is love: Remembering love, teaching love and modeling love. But there’s a form that teaching and loving takes and for many people it’s a career. A lot of folks talk to me about really desiring a meaningful career, in which their needs are supported. They dream of this, but there’s a part of them that’s reluctant to leave a safe job. They have security, but they’re not happy. That’s really a life lesson for all of us – to make that leap of faith. I was fortunate because I watched my father do it. When I was about 6-years-old he left his aerospace job … and pursued his dream, which was model airplanes. We had just bought a house, had a mortgage, my mom didn’t work, he had two little kids and he took that leap. He’s going to be 80 this year, he’s barely got gray hair, July••AA ugust2011 2011 July ugust the Journey In each life we have a personal lesson or two that we’re learning, like patience or forgiveness. And we also have a global mission that we’re here to learn and express. Our angels help to keep us on that path. he’s healthy as a horse and happy. Growing up with that, I learned life’s too short to compromise on anything … including relationships, where you live and where you work. It’s about trusting this benevolent universe… Starr: The pact that we have with our angels, do we make this before we come into this earth plane? Are we aware of it? What is this pact? Virtue: I’m a firm believer in past lives, and [that] this is a big continuum in learning – a progression, just like different grades in school, each life building upon the one before it. The life lessons and the angels are with you through all those lives; they don’t have any mortality. They’re like teaching assistants, [saying], “In this life here’s what we’re going to learn.” In each life we have a personal lesson or two that we’re learning, like patience or forgiveness. And we also have a global mission that we’re here to learn and express, and that would be something like you being a writer, or someone working with animals. Our angels help to keep us on that path. If you’re unhappy, it’s the same thing as if you’re driving down the road and you go over those little bumps in the road that tell you, “Oops you’re off the path.” Anyone who’s unhappy with their job or where they live, or anything – those the Journey things need to be addressed instead of stuffed down with chemicals, dysfunctional behaviors or addictions. Starr: You’ve written that when we talk to our angels the verbiage isn’t important. I think that you’re right when you say people get caught up in what to say and what ritual to use in saying it. Virtue: Exactly. The angels respond to our simply giving them permission and asking for their help, because we have this free will. The whole world was created for this desire for free will. It’s just an illusion that we’re separate from God, but the illusion is very real. You have to ask your angels for help; you have to ask God for help before they can intervene because of their respect for free will. It doesn’t matter how you ask, what matters is that you’re very clear about what you desire. Think of it like they can feel your thoughts. So you can say it, you can scream it – in fact sometimes that’s the most effective way. When you’re crystal clear about what you will or will not accept you can use any words you want. The thing is just asking and then accepting the help that comes always in response to the prayer. The help can be in the form of direct intervention, where you ask for a new job and boom here comes a phone call from a friend and “we’re hiring at my place of employment.” July • August 2011 It can be something more along the lines of signs that you get, [like] when three people recommend the same book or movie in the same day. Always the help is offered; it’s up to us to notice it. Where I find that people run into trouble is that they don’t trust, and also they don’t think they deserve it. That’s a big part of my job is to help folks get over those little hurdles. Starr: So self-esteem is a key for all of us? Virtue: Exactly, well put. Starr: Back to the signs, I see that your oldest son Charles and you wrote a book Signs from Above, I’m a huge sign person, I get feathers a lot and always pick them up, and I think that’s a sign. I get asked a lot “How do I know my angels are listening?” Virtue: If you see, hear or feel anything unusual or repetitive, this is a sign. The angels told me once, and I believe them, “that everything Page 15 Full Spectrum Center for Spiritual Awakening Discover the great treasure that resides within your own heart, within your own greater Self. It’s not something esoteric at all, it’s being magnetically attracted to us. If you want to know how your thoughts are, just look around you and if you don’t like it, then change your thoughts. The signs are really fun. I especially love the number signs where the angels send us numbers in sequences that give us messages. The book I wrote, Angel Numbers 101, talks about that. When you see repetitive numbers, or license plate numbers, it’s telling you something. Starr: When I’m working with your angel cards in the mornings during meditation, I sometimes draw the Indigo Children card and the Crystal Children card. What’s the difference between the two? You have to ask your angels for help; you have to ask God for help before they can intervene because of their respect for free will. It doesn’t matter how you ask, what matters is that you’re very clear about what you desire. Virtue: Oh, big difference. Indigos are a little older but the main difference is the whole personality. The Indigos came in with an inner truth detector, so they can smell if someone has integrity or not. In school they don’t necessarily give respect to the principal or the person with the title; they might have more respect for the janitor. They also know the difference in school between what they need to learn because it will help them someday in the future, and what has no value to them. They’re strongwilled, old souls that have this strong-willed leadership. Their big global mission is to bring integrity back to the world. The Crystal children are very quiet, in contrast. They absolutely are nature fanatics; they have to be outdoors or they get cranky. They don’t sleep much because they might miss something. They’re delightful, they talk more with their eyes and they love music. They’re very artistic, love animals, they are absolutely fearless and they are just happy, happy people. The way this is working is like an evolution. You and I are of the generation of light workers; we absolutely care about this world but we run into self-esteem issues. The Indigo generation doesn’t have those self-esteem issues. They trust their intuition, but they don’t really know what to do with it and they’re looking to our generation to show them how to put it to action. So we’re here to be teachers to the Indigos, and the Indigos usually are the parents of the Crystals. If the Indigos do their job and help to get rid of the Page 16 July • August 2011 the Journey corruptions of this world to bring an era of integrity, emotions, and compassion then the Crystals will populate this planet with this beautiful generation of quiet, gentle, forgiving people who are connected to nature. It’s very beautiful. It all fits together perfectly and it’s just a matter of allowing. Starr: I have a question on free will. I know we have free will and this question comes as a mother with a daughter who suffered several years with addictions. We want to help our children but how do we do this? Virtue: OK, that’s one of my favorite questions to answer. Think of your free will as a circle and everything in that circle is yours; you have the right to do whatever you want in that circle even though the angels and God might wish that you would choose differently. Your daughter has that circle too; she can do whatever it is she chooses to do. There is a point where the two circles overlap each other, and then your daughter’s free will is affecting your free will and happiness, to the degree that her free-will choices affect your free-will choices. When this occurs you are allowed to pray for intervention and the angels and God will intervene. In fact the clearer you are about your desire the greater the intervention on their part. If you see, hear, or feel anything unusual or repetitive, this is a sign. The angels told me once, and I believe them, “that everything is a sign, because everything is a mirror that is attracted to our current thoughts.” Starr: My youngest daughter lost her Dad recently through sudden death, and she’s having a hard time connecting to the Angels, to him and just in general. What do you say to someone who says, “The angels aren’t listening,” or “I can’t talk to them?” Virtue: My research shows that absolutely everyone does talk to his or her angels, it’s just a matter of whether it’s a conscious awareness or not. Right now I’m connected to your daughter’s Angels and they’re telling me her Dad does talk to her when she’s sleeping, and intuitively. Part of the trying too hard thing is just blocking the conscious awareness of it, but anytime anyone asks to talk to a loved one, or to angels, contact is made successfully. Starr: I’d like to speak about the Mayan calendar. In one video, you said it’s more a matter of the Mayans just didn’t finish the calendar [because] they had to leave the village. Virtue: Prophesies about the end of the world have been going on since the beginning of time. The human ego feels guilty running away from God. The human ego is built on guilt and expects punishment, and because it’s the Journey impossible to leave God, there is no punishment that is going to happen. The whole thing about 2012 is just a theory that a man came up with who actually passed a couple of years ago; it’s just an urban legend. This whole thing about the end of the world is just the human ego enjoying being afraid. The May 21st doom-and-gloom prophesy was actually a blessing in disguise; it showed people and it gave them a chance to make fun, ridicule and laugh. There is no basis to the 2012 calendar. It’s just going to be another year, but it’s giving people the opportunity to face their fears and their mortalities, and I think that’s really healthy. Ask yourself, Hey what do I want to do in this lifetime?... and then do it now! Do what it is you want to do even if it’s a big goal like write a book or open a healing center. If you devote a little bit of time to your goals every single day, it will get done. The universe matches us to an even higher degree and things just start to take care of themselves. Starr: Aside from your book The Miracles of Archangel Michael, a favorite angel of many, I’ve heard you refer to Jophiel as the Feng Shui Angel, and Gabriel the Messenger Angel. Could you shed some light on those angels? Virtue: Gabriel is a good angel to work with if you feel you have to get a message out, write a book or teach. And Jophiel helps us beautify our lives. Jophiel is a beautiful angel to work with right now. The angels told me we are in a time of dynamic manifestation, that we absolutely must think positive thoughts for our mental, emotional and physical health and Jophiel will help us to uplift our thoughts no matter what’s going on around us. We’ve got to avoid blaming and complaining; it traps the lower vibration energies. We can partner with Jophiel who can help us come up with the beautiful words that uplift others. This is our mission as light workers. Starr: Once we ask the angels to help us with a situation, can we also ask them to help us let go? It seems many of us have a problem with surrender? Virtue: Exactly, it’s like people who clean their homes before the housekeeper gets there. You don’t have to perfect yourself before you ask the angels for help. If there are certain issues you wrestle with, then by all means July • August 2011 Page 17 ask them to help you with those particular issues. If you have problems with faith, then ask them to help you have more faith, and they will do so. I used to go there all the time to do a TV show called AM Cleveland, and what stands out the most to me about Cleveland is nice people. I feel that a big part of our mission is just to be nice to each other and I like being around nice folks. I also feel the people in the Cleveland area have a high degree of sensitivity. A large part of my workshop at the event will be on how to deal with your increasing sensitivity and how highly sensitive people can continue to mange to keep their heart open, while shielding and protecting yourself at the same time. So I’ll be doing a lot of clearing work, and definitely I will be doing as many readings as I can for the audience – and just offering up whatever I can to help people deal with living happier lives. This big tour that I’m on is about the fears people have over 2012 and the increasing sensitivity. I’m doing whatever I can to help people understand that they’re not alone, and that help is available to them. Starr: I’ve heard you say that fear is a choice. So when we’re in fear mode we’re choosing fear mode. So how do we recognize that we actually made a conscious choice of choosing fear and how do we get out of that fear mode? Virtue: A lot of it is having a zero tolerance of pain policy with yourself. If you’re in any form of pain, you’re in your ego. It’s not whether you go in your ego, it’s what you do with it. But if you just start to have this firm “I won’t accept … any form of pain – existential, spiritual, emotional, etc.” policy, the minute you start to feel any sort of pain, ask the angels for help. Worry makes things worse and prayer always improves everything. Starr: What one final thing do you want to leave our readers with? What’s the Big Kahuna the angels most want us to know? Virtue: Even if you’re not sure that the angels are real and you don’t really believe or you feel undeserving of their help, the angels are with you. If you just take a moment to ask for their help you’ll feel their loving presence. I want to reassure everyone, speaking as a lifelong clairvoyant, that you’re not alone and they are there for each and every one of us. You don’t have to earn it, you don’t have to belong to any certain religion, or act a certain way, or pray a certain way to garner their help. Their help is there because angels are as much a part of life as having a heart, a lung and just being alive. It’s a part of our God-given capabilities, so please, please reach out for help much more often than you are. Angels want to help us with every single part of our lives – not just the so-called big things. They’re here to help us have peace on earth, one person at a time, and the greatest contribution you can make to this planet right now is to be at peace. You don’t have to do it alone; you’ve got angels with you to help restore you to peace, which is your natural state. Page 20 July • August 2011 the Journey How to Serve Angels A By Carolyn Elliott ngels, as I understand them, are vast creatures of enormous power. They’re closedsystems — they can always re-gather and re-assemble themselves after the shudders of any emotional rapture. They can stay in full possession of their beauty. They’re already in their eternal aspect so they never dissolve. This is a trait we humans don’t have in our earthly existence. We’re always falling apart, dissipating, dying. Yet in the cosmic scheme of things, angels are actually disadvantaged because they don’t share our quality of disappearing-ness, our mortality and evanescence. They’re always at one with beauty, so they don’t perceive it from the outside as we humans do, and they can’t erotically interact with it. Eros and thanatos (death) are intimately intertwined. Without thanatos there can be no eros, because in order for eros to arise there must be some sense of separation, of duality. Angels are beings who enjoy uninterrupted life and oneness and thus cannot enjoy the erotic play of duality that comes with the possibility of death as we humans can. So we mortals suffer, but we also have a privilege unknown to higher spiritual beings: We can sense the world and ourselves as fleeting and therefore feel attraction and erotic love. Since all that we are and all that we perceive disappears, we must be like bees – willing to collect the nectar of life with our senses and bring it into our hearts where we can the Journey turn it into the honey of higher consciousness. In this sense, the point of our human life is to take all that we see –gorgeous and hideous, pleasing and revolting – and to love it until we have transformed the world and ourselves. We could say that this is a poetic point of view, an attitude that embraces all the extremes of life with equal welcome and grace. This process of turning the stuff of life into honey is hardly passive; it involves active gathering of life and active expression of the love we have cultivated. In other words, our duty is not only to love the world but to communicate that love to others in a way that succinctly teaches them to love as we have loved. As we do this labor, we perform a service for the angels a service that they require because without it they would be unable to imagine the intensity that comes from living willingly in the shadow of death. We show them the painful beauty of earthly life in a way that they would never be able to perceive without our intervening. Our English word “poem” comes from the Greek word poeïsis, which means “to make.” For the Greeks, the emergence of a blossom from a bough was poeïsis, and so was the making of a wheel for a cart. So how do we accomplish this labor of service to angels? Of teaching divinity the wonders of duality? We do this by making our every action and word a poem, a gift, an offering. Our English word “poem” comes from the Greek word poeïsis, which means “to make.” For the Greeks, the emergence of a blossom from a bough was poeïsis, and so was the making of a wheel for a cart. Both are kinds of making. The Greeks called the first kind of making phyJJuly uly • •A August ugust 2011 2011 sis and the second kind of making techn (from here we get our word “technology”). We ordinarily consider the poeïsis of nature, physis, to be different from the poeïsis of human technology. But it’s actually possible for humans to create in such a way that we use our skills and technologies to enact a spiritual blossoming, a spiritual physis. In other words, the things we create in the material world – our written verses, our paintings, our emails, our dinners and parties – can all be “makings” or “poems” in the highest sense when we perform them with great consciousness and love. Through our loving awareness, we bring to the simplest of our creations a celebration that serves angels. We perform this service by transmuting the stuff of our daily life into songs that empower angels to love the fleeting people and things of this world with a strength and fearlessness to rival our own. Frankly, I didn’t want to be. I valued practical. I gravitated more toward numerology, with its formulae and rules; I dove into Tarot cards, whose archetypal information I found to be something concrete. Even in the beginning, when I was putting my hands on anything that looked at all metaphysical, I’d find too many angel books came across as fluffy, or specious, or both. But it’s a rare person who sets themselves on the Light Road who doesn’t run into angels sooner or later. Angels are one of Spirit’s fastest and most profound ways of dealing with dangerous situations, Doubting Thomases or lost lambs in ways that cannot be ignored. And I got to have angel encounters for all three of those sorts of adventures. The first encounters happened in 1994, when, suddenly and with no training, I found myself able to talk to dead people and do handson healing. I couldn’t explain why; I just knew I was being “handed my draft notice” and called to service. So I bowed my head and used my hands. Every time I started doing my work, someone – or something – put hands gently over mine, and we worked together. People would feel presences they could not explain, and get healings neither of us could logically justify. And the presence didn’t feel like a spirit guide – I had those, knew those, and they simply said, “The healings are larger than we are. Trust that.” So I tentatively, grudgingly, acPage 24 cepted the idea that somehow I’d come to angelic notice. But I didn’t want to get all “glurpy purple,” as I said to my friends. I still wanted to be solidly based. Besides, who was I to expect angelic attention, or even more, assistance? I was neither saintly, nor particularly devout at that point. They had better things to do, I was sure. By 1997, I was doing enough work that I knew I needed to acknowledge allegiance to someone. After a long and difficult road, it was clear that the banner under which I needed to walk was that of the Christ. But there was fear. I didn’t like what experience I’d had with organized religion, didn’t believe most of what standard Church doctrine told us and kept fighting for the logic to win. It didn’t. What happened to me on Feb. 1, 1997 is private, and I’ve told only a few. But believe me when I say July • August 2011 that there were angelic presences in my little apartment in Atlanta; that the room’s temperature went up fifteen degrees in five minutes; that I felt myself held and moved, and saw finger indentations on my nightgown sleeve that had no visible fingers causing them. And that night, I knew that the Christ has very little to do with church doctrine, and everything to do with that incandescent, immanent center of compassion, non-judgment and love at the center of the universe. Because her particular spirit guide was in the room with us as a witness, she asked him to report to her. And he gave her the exact order of everything that happened from a 90-degree angle to where I was. After the visitation was over, I called my close friend, who is a priest in the Celtic Catholic church. Could she could explain what happened without my telling her about it? Because her particular spirit guide was in the room with us as a witness, she asked him to report to her. And he gave her the exact order of everything that happened from a 90-degree angle to where I was – which is where I had sensed him at the beginning of the angelic encounter. You would think I wouldn’t need any more convincing after that, wouldn’t you? I suppose God gets a great kick out of His most hardheaded kids, because that I certainly was. OK, angels help me heal. OK, they were part of the celestial welcoming committee. But all those stories about telling people to take a different road, saving them in boating accidents, all that – nah, not me. the Journey I don’t matter enough for that. In February 2002, I was on a rural road in upstate New York. It had been warm, then cold, and rain had changed to a light snow overnight. Suddenly, my tires hit a patch of black ice under snow. My car swerved toward a stand of trees. I wrenched the wheel – too hard – I spun in the other direction, clipping a pine tree, knocking down a telephone pole. I felt the car do a rollover, and found myself hanging, upside down, with electrical wires over the car. I wasn’t even wearing a seat belt. My car swerved toward a stand of trees. I wrenched the wheel – too hard – I spun in the other direction, clipping a pine tree, knocking down a telephone pole. I felt the car do a rollover, and found myself hanging, upside down, with electrical wires over the car. Looking back, I realize that angels had the wheel from the first skid. They had to – because at no time did I fear what was happening. It felt like slow motion, very clear. We are right on course to clear out the old energies of the past and bring in the new energies of divine light to the entire world. These new energies are focused beams of light, restoring every cell in our beings. They touch every spot on the planet, every creature, every plant, every drop of water. We are being restored to wholeness and oneness. We are one with all things and we are interconnected, so we must change, as well as every living being surrounding us, including Mother Earth. During these times of unusual weather patterns – earthquakes, storms, tornados, floods, tsunamis, and the like – we are reminded that change sometimes is swift, literally shaking things up, throwing things around, stirring the old dense energies and re-patterning every foundation. We have been hearing and seeing these changes everywhere: in the news, on the Internet, on the radio, and even in the themes of the movies and TV. Change is happening politically, culturally, economically, socially and personally. There is no area left untouched by the new energies that are coming to us. Many people have transitioned; many have been forced to relocate (foreclosures); others suffer illnesses and injuries. These are all manifestations of a deep restructuring of the world and the “self” as we currently know it. Intuitively, we know that these changes are leading to peace and harmony, but how do we cope with such monumental changes in the present moment? How do we get through the hour, the day, the week, the month, the year? Page 30 This is where the angels come in. They surround us at all times. There are legions of angels assigned just to planet Earth, and also assigned to each individual on Earth, to assist all living beings through all the transitions and changes. During these times of unusual weather patterns – earthquakes, storms, tornados, floods, tsunamis, and the like – we are reminded that change sometimes is swift, literally shaking things up, throwing things around, stirring the old dense energies and re-patterning every foundation. Yet they cannot interfere with free will, so they must be called upon. You must ask for their help. Once you July • August 2011 the Journey ask, they instantly arrive to assist. How do you know they are there? Some people feel a rush of air or a chill; others feel something light (like a feather) brush up on their shoulder; others hear a voice, or a sweet song comes to mind and sometimes animals will show up on their behalf as reminders (such as butterflies, hummingbirds, doves, or other flying birds). Angels are connected to the “winged ones” since they have wings themselves. So it is no surprise that butterflies and birds show up when angels are called. During times of emergency, sometimes angels will intervene. This is especially true during near-miss accidents. Sometimes the angels know that an accident would alter your path of destiny, so they will help to keep you on your path. Many people have experienced angel intervention, like walking away from a deadly accident unharmed or experiencing a “near-miss.” And there have even been accounts of people waking up, far removed from a car accident untouched, almost as if lifted up by angel emergency transport. When you start to consciously and intentionally call upon angels to help you in your daily life, you start to experience the incredible power and the unconditional love that they provide. When you are having a hard time, you can ask for 10,000 angels to stand behind you – and they will. You simply have to believe in order to invoke their help. If you feel weak, you can ask them to lift you up. If you feel overwhelmed, you can ask them to clear your field of anything that no longer serves you. They can be an integral part of your daily routine: If you “ask, believe and allow,” their divine energy will touch you and restore you. In order to begin your work with angels, it is essential to first clear any doubts about self-worthiness. The angels are so powerful and sometimes their light is so intense that many people don’t feel deserving of such help, and they subconsciously block any forms of angel The angels are so powerful and sometimes their light is so intense that many people don’t feel deserving of such help, and they subconsciously block any forms of angel help or avoid calling for help at all. help or avoid calling for help at all. Sometimes you have to “fake it to make it.” Even though you might not fully believe you are worthy, continue with positive affirmations anyway until your energy shifts to worthiness. New understandings of who I am and how to better live my life come to me daily. My motivation is to learn and to share. Angels exist in abundance all ar ound us. Angels are the guides in our lives that help us to straighten out our path more easily than we would otherwise be able to do on our own. We need not look very far to find them; they come into our lives every day. Angels are those who pre-decease us, those whom we can sometimes lean on when this world gets to be too much, because they now possess the wisdom of what comes after this life. Their presence can be of great comfort because of the perspective that they now offer – that the problems we face today are but a moment in the sum of our existence. Angels are also the people with whom we interact: our friends and family, those who make themselves available to us when they see us struggle and offer gentle support and help us to find our way through difficult times. They are our teachers; those who have great knowledge of the things we wish to learn; who help us avoid the pitfalls they encountered along the way. They are also the people with whom our interactions do not always go so smoothly. They are those that force us to look at the status quo and alter the course our lives have taken: the boss who eventually forces us to re-evaluate a career choice; or that intimate relationship that ends in a breakup that challenges us to look deeper into ourselves. These relationships, these angels, are a gift to us. They come into our lives to help us along in our journey. They offer us a perspective that we can’t see for ourselves because we become too emotionally attached to struggles that cloud our judgment, whereas they can observe our lives from a detached vantage Page 34 point. We are utilizing the nature of relationships to their fullest capacity when we open ourselves to this understanding. Like anything that is of value to us, these angels who enter our lives require us to actively participate in addressing the challenges that come our way, so that we may fully realize the lessons those challenges bring. Our angels want to help us, but we need to make ourselves open to that help. When we face these challenges the best thing we can do is to be honest with ourselves as to exactly why they present so much of a struggle – even when that truth makes us uncomfortable. The next thing for us to be willing to do is to share that honesty with our angels so that they have all the information necessary to guide us. When working through those difficult times, being open and vulnerable about the challenging events in our lives serves us best. Our honesty gives us and others the ability to see and address the core of our struggles – as opposed to dealing with symptoms that are superficial and will always prove to be elusive as far as providing any healing benefit. When we see the people, our angels, that come into our lives for what they truly are – an interactive force to help us in our journey – and when we become proactive in wanting to help ourselves, we make our walk of life easier. We need something else to lean on, to fully trust in to help guide us along the way. Having a strong spiritual connection has been the true icing on the cake. Staying connected to God has taken my life to a whole new level of peace and balance. We cannot rely just on our own willpower and works to change, so I encourage everyone to lean on the transforming love of God to supply what we don’t always get through the day. Believe in your ability to change. You and God are the only ones who know how to take care of you. Let us all live a life full of purpose and passion and most of all peace. I believe that if each of us developed into the person God gifted us to be, the world would be a different place to live. The brain cannot hold a positive and a negative thought at the same time; it’s virtually impossible. Soul Food is dedicated to all my readers as an offering to share my metaphysical musings and the lessons I have encountered throughout my journey here in this classroom we call Planet Earth. I encourage your questions and quandaries as we grow together toward solution and enlightenment. Dear Eva: I have a daughter who I’m worried sick about. Months, sometimes years, go by and I don’t hear from her. Word through the grapevine is she’s fallen into the world of drugs and I don’t know how to help her. No one knows where she is, I’m afraid she may be homeless or worse… dead. I can’t go on living like this. I don’t sleep at night and every time the phone rings I think it may be the dreaded call. –JC white candle and hold her in the light. Imagine God and/ or her angels with a huge vase filled with white light and they are pouring fountains and fountains of light over her. When the time is right she will come out of the darkness, and the light you’ve been holding for her all this time will be there waiting. You will make it through this my dear, divine timing is just that: Divine. Dear Eva: I’m torn between all this talk about goal setting and Dear Sleepless: Coming from a mother of two daughters, I know only too well the fear of the dreaded phone call. Allow me to share with you a quote from the prophet Kahil Gibran: “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.” With that being said, worrying about your daughter is only bringing more into your life to worry about. What we think about we bring about. The brain cannot hold a positive and a negative thought at the same time; it’s virtually impossible. When fear and worry come into your head, stop right where you are and think of a positive memory you have of her. Bring that thought to your mind each and every time a dark thought enters. God gave us free will, and it is not up to us to interfere in another’s life. Our children have their own paths to follow, and neither you nor I know what that is. Something that works for me is writing a letter to their highest angel. Express all your thoughts to her angel, and ask her angel to watch over her and protect her. Light a Page 36 July • August 2011 The Journey doing, and the flip side of just being and doing nothing. One guru says this; another says that. It’s enough to drive a sane person crazy. How do you know what to do and what not to do? I feel like I’m on a merry-go-round and it’s going nowhere. Any light you can shed on this subject would be greatly appreciated. –SM Dear This and That: I feel your dilemma. As Shakespeare said: “To be, or not to be: That is the question.” Especially in these times, with all the spiritual gurus out there, knowing which way to turn, who to listen to and what to do is a quandary for plenty of us. A wise sage once told me, “Whatever is meant to be yours will not pass you by.” For myself, I try to remember those words when I’m faced with the question: Should I or shouldn’t I? I strive to look at it this way; I meditate, pray about it, listen with my inner voice, and then go put feet on my prayers. When I think back to the plethora of blessings that have come into my life, the finest ones just came to me; I didn’t go searching for them. This one thought alone has helped me when my busy brain is going a thousand miles a minute and I’m trying to plan my next move toward my divine path. Remember the cliché, if you want to make God laugh tell him your plans, and if you want to make him laugh even harder tell him your plans for your children. Take all that information, sort through it like a sieve and keep what works for you. You and only you are the final judge the Journey on what works in your life, besides God. So get off that merry-go-round, get out of that same park you’ve been riding in, change your scenery, trust your instincts and then let it come to you. Take your time and discern. August – Relationships may feel very distant this month and communication is at a low point. It’s important to think about the energy you’ve been sending out. With a deeper awareness, there is greater understanding and less hurt feelings. Page 40 Leo July – Travel is on the way for you and even possibly a big move. Take some time and decide what you really want. Put things in order and embrace the energy of the universe with forward movement. August – New friendships appear and old friendships return. Pay attention to what people are telling you. Difficulties in your life are there only because you give them so much energy. These challenges are actually opportunities to move forward. Virgo July – Things at home have been difficult, and you may be feeling like you’ve had to hide your feelings. Figure out what you really want: set an intention of truth, clarity and forward movement and let things come together. August – Financial issues are coming to a head this month. It’s not necessarily the choices you’ve made but the choices of others. Your intentions are good but it’s not always possible to take care of everyone around you. Libra July – New job opportunities present themselves to you. But are you paying attention? It’s time to take a deeper look at your life. This includes relationships. Are you in a relationship because it’s comfortable or because it’s really what you want? August – Things with relationships may get stirred up a little as people who you haven’t seen in a while come back into your life. As for family members, be careful not to say something you will regret. Scorpio July – New job opportunities are on the horizon. Go into your heart and ask yourself what feels right for you. Then, just do it. Remember that the more you move forward in your life the happier you will be. August – People become more honest with their feelings about you. This allows you to be more honest about your feelings toward them. People really do want to know what you have to say. Now is the time to come forward and express yourself. July July••AAugust ugust2011 2011 the Journey Sagittarius July – Your energy levels are running high and low. Consider doing some yoga or meditation. Even a good walk in the park will help you clear your thoughts. This will allow creative ideas to follow in so get your pen and pad ready. August – Family issues come to a head after someone has broken your trust. It’s important not to be on the offensive. Let them come forward and work this out with you. Financial concerns will ease as the month moves forward. Capricorn July – Relationships are coming up but how are you looking at them? Are you distorting what’s really going on or are you seeing them as they really are? Don’t allow your mind to create a reality that isn’t real. Stay grounded and be aware. August – Relationships issues have been huge over the last few months. Learn how to honor yourself and not just consider what others need. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind and let others know what you need. It’s all about balance. Aquarius July – Focus on taking care of your health. Slow down and take a walk in the park or go camping. It’s important to connect with nature right now. Remember, everything isn’t about work. Work is good and balance is more important. August – Erratic energy may be hitting you right now as you feel pulled in all directions. Write down the things you want to accomplish. This will also help with setting your priorities. Take it one day at a time; one thing at a time. Constantly Updated! visit www.thejourneymag.com Pisces July – Love is in the air and you’re feeling invincible. This isn’t just about romantic love, but love of life, love of yourself, love for people and love for food. Indulgence could be a challenge for you, but enjoy this time in your life. August – This month you’re expending a lot of energy leaving you drained. To make maters worse, the money isn’t flowing in the way you want it to either. Don’t worry. It’s just a mater of time before things start to balance out for you. Whenever I am sad or frustrated or scared, they send me signs to let me know everything is going to be OK. How do I know they are signs? Because of my personal belief system, built through a lifetime of personal experience. Just as we get to choose our own faith, each one of us gets to decide what is meaningful to us, and ask our angels to send us signs that are meaningful to us. Yesterday morning I was thinking about the Morning Glories at Michael’s studio and wishing I had some of the seeds to plant at my new house. That afternoon Michael came to visit and brought me a present. Morning Glory seeds. Coincidence? No, sign. Beautiful, wonderful, reassuring sign. Spread your healing loving wings over me and protect me, comfort me, guide me and shield me from anything that no longer serves me for my highest good and highest good of all. Help me to wake up refreshed, peaceful, clear, serene and in perfect harmony with all that is. Thank you Angels for your divine presence in my dreamtime and all times. Wake up each morning and journal your thoughts and experiences. See how this prayer profoundly impacts your morning and then the rest of your day. Allow the angels to improve your sleep patterns, take away your daily worries and provide you the comfort and peace that you deserve. Let the angels help you transform to the peaceful, loving, being that you are. Mitleid...continued from page 25 I had a couple of small bruises on my shoulders. My back was wrenched and I was in pain for a few days. But for a woman in a flipped car with no seat belt? Nothing short of miraculous. Especially when I saw my car at the garage. It was smashed to bits everywhere but where I had been sitting. It was as if there was a protective shell in that one place. Three gifts of spirit – when I was a Doubting Thomas, a lost lamb, and now in a life-threatening situation. Inexplicable, loving hands had been there in every single occurrence. How could I possibly doubt the presence of angels any longer? I couldn’t. And that day, I stopped trying. Tina Sacchi will present at the ninth annual Journey Expo Cleveland, Sept. 9-11. It’s now almost a decade since that last encounter. My intuitive work has blossomed into a full-time career. I read for clients all over the world, and whether I’m channeling, healing or doing intuitive counseling I’m still as practical as I know how to be with them. But I’m finding there is nothing more practical than an angel when God wants to get a point across. And when I’m in a stuck place, I hold out my hand and wait for that warm touch and the rustle of a wing in my ear.
