Recently, a neighbor was hunting wild pheasants with his sons and his four year old experienced bird dog. When they returned home they commented they had knocked three roosters down but only recovered one bird because it was dry and the scenting conditions were poor. Last year I hunted with the same neighbor and dog and had the same problem. This time conditions were extremely wet just proving it was not a weather related issue. Personally, I despise losing birds and I have no use for a dog that can not recover cripples. You can cripple a bird anytime; however, it seems to be more prevalent as the season progresses. Late season the birds are older with thicker feathers and have experience evading hunters. This makes for longer shots and more cripples with most only escaping with a mere broken wing. From my experience, I would estimate that 25% of the cripples hide close to the fall and the other 75% run away a few feet to several hundred yards. I recall one of my Shorthairs, Ginger, tracking a cripple nearly a mile before she caught and retrieved it. In order to develop a dependable cripple finder you should start your dog at a young age. A pup must experience what happens after the shot when the bird hits the ground running. For this to happen, you should allow your young dog to break on the flush. The best experience is gained when you hunt your dog where pheasants exist, but are not abundant. With too much scent the dog gets confused and likely will not be able to concentrate on the cripple track. Many times they just switch off and begin tracking ing a better cripple finder. One thing I do is release birds that have been rendered flightless. Release the bird in a field with sparse cover but not so thin that the dog can see the bird. If the cover is too thick the bird will just hide and not leave a track. Next bring your dog up to the release site on lead and encourage them to track. Hopefully the dog will track and produce the bird. If your dog points the cripple restrain your dog and flush it out. Let it run away out of sight, wait a few minutes until your dog is settled down then commence tracking the bird again. If you have a cooperative bird you can repeat this part several times. Eventually the dog will catch the bird. Belle vom Speidel Fortunately, our German dogs are bred to be versatile and some of them may be natural cripple dogs. However, if you practice some of these ideas you can assist your dog in being a better cripple finder. another bird. In this situation bring your dog back to the location of the fall and command dead bird and try again. Don’t be concerned about trying to keep your dog steady at this point as you can always steady them up later. But if you miss this window of opportunity with your young dog you may have missed it forever. In addition, there are some artificial situations you can set up to help enhance your dog in becom- Good luck hunting and remember “Cripples Are Not An Option” -Dan Arndt The Versa Tell Presidents Report PAGE 2 Greetings, I hope all of you enjoyed a successful and safe hunting season with your DK. We had a very pleasant drive and arrived at approximately 1500 hours at the Canada-USA border… and then the wait begins. It was an extremely busy Friday afternoon and we finally crossed the bridge and got to customs at 1800 hours.Yes a very exciting wait of just under, 3 hours at the Kevin L-R Zyka, Vito and Issy vom Osterberg border. Man we need to look into this problem. I have traveled to many different countries and our border crossing is one of the worst. 0430 hours seemed to come very early on Saturday morning but as promised there was Little Gabe at 0530 hours and we caravanned to the breakfast site. Louis’s is an excellent little restaurant in a small town next to the testing site. We had a great breakfast and enjoyed some excellent fellowship with handlers and judges. We truly enjoy talking dogs and the first time handlers get to share some of their upcoming concerns. 0800 hours and we are testing. Kirk Jones, another fellow Canadian and I volunteered to plant birds. This gave us a bird’s eye view of the field work, no pun intended, and we could see the excellent field work that took place first hand. The test proceeded well and the handlers were kept on task by an excellent judging team. It was a very cold and Windy day. The apprentice Judges from Texas looked like they were wearing every piece of clothing they had brought with them from Texas. They never stopped smiling the entire test day. The strong wind caused a few problems but it did make for some very interesting dog work. We had an excellent lunch delivered to the field and after a short break we were back on the road heading to the drag fields. The drags were performed by each dog almost flawlessly and it seemed as the day went on the dogs got stronger. The handlers also looked more relaxed. With the drags finished the judges did the scoring and the worker bees set up for the breed show. We had a nice number of DK’s for the Zuchtschau and the weather was cooperating. Our Senior Judge for the day David Peasley after a long day in the field was now judging the breed show. I know the gallery and handlers appreciate your hard work and dedication Dave. Please see the breed show results in this newsletter. An injured foot has restricted what I have been able to accomplish, but we were able to do what was allowable. Field work was out of the question so I sat on a folding chair and was able to get my young dog extremely interested in ducks and duck searches. My training group assisted as needed and I contributed to their needs as I could. I would like to think that all of us benefited from one another during the training year. This year reaffirmed to me how important it is to belong to a training group. So, you might put this on your belated New Year’s resolution list; join and participate with a training group. It will help you achieve the successes you are looking for. Steve and his girls. I attended and participated as a helper, to a limited degree, in a number of DK and DD tests this spring and fall and ran my young dog in Derby and also a Zuchtschau. It was wonderful to see friends and meet new handlers at these events. Watching the dogs work is always special. I also contacted my State Representatives concerning a couple of bills that were detrimental to hunting, fishing, and our dogs. Please, get involved in protecting your outdoor heritage. If we don’t stand up for our outdoor rights, no one else will. The foot is a bit better which has allowed a few shorter hunting trips this fall, but the bird populations in Iowa is at an all time low due to several years of harsh winters and cold, wet springs. However, being in the field with friends and wonderful dogs charges my battery. Although hunting season is a ways off, I am counting the days until we are enjoying the hunt once again. And, please remember to always put your best foot forward. Best Wishes, Steve Belle vom Speidel CAN AM NEWS The Versa Tell Merchandise Coordinator PAGE 8 Merchandises Coordinator’s Report Mike With Aika and Holly. Hello membership; I hope you enjoyed a memorable hunting season. The bulk of my hunting takes place after Xmas in my neck of the woods, but I was able to take a hunting trip to South Dakota for pheasants in October. I have never hunted pheasants before, but have always wanted to and I felt this would be a great experience for me and my young dog. Both cases turned out to be true. The hunting was good and thanks to good planning, especially meals, the trip was enjoyable; it was great to be around good people and good dogs. The most important idea for me that I left for the trip with is that in order to be a better breeder and tester hunting has to come first. I still have most of all sizes and colors in shirts, along with three different colors in hats. Remember, VCDKK merchandise looks great and is a good way to promote our club and breed. Fourteen years ago, a fellow with a German speaking accent set a crate on the floor at the Chicago Lufthansa Airline cargo area. Sitting on the floor, I opened the crate door and a brown nose appeared in a hesitant manner and briefly surveyed the situation. In a flash, Hella was out of the crate and physically leapt into my lap and metaphorically leapt into my heart. In an instant, a strong bond was developed between man and dog. Like all of my dogs, a bargain was developed between us. I was to be the leader and decision maker; Hella was to be receptive to training; she was to be friendly, cooperative, and obedient, she would be expected to be a hunter and be a wonderful companion. In exchange, she was to receive high quality medical care, nutrition, shelter, and a high level of understanding and compassion. There was not a word put to paper, just conditions both of us would be expected to uphold. Over the years Hella went everywhere with me. That included hunting trips throughout America, fishing trips, trips to town, and she was an everyday fixture at my office. As a pup, lying in my lap was a frequent choice; this ended when she simply became too big to do that comfortably so she replaced that behavior with a head in the lap. Hella was an awesome hunter possessing all the skills to complete this job in an excellent manner. I can still recall a multitude of exceptional successes in the field and water; she never lost a bird. Hella was just as comfortable in the home and as a companion dog as she was at the hunt. At the office, she was fond of the magic drawer as this was where the treats were kept and treats were very important to this girl. After the sun had retired for the day, we would relax on the dog couch in the family room keeping track of our favorite baseball and football team. She seemed to be engaged in this activity with her look of assurance to me when we called for the play that was needed at the moment. I almost think this was important to her. Being a Deutsch Kurzhaar meant Hella would be trained and tested in the German system. She earned a Prize 1 in all of her tests (Spring and Fall Breed Tests and the VGP or Master’s Test) and was rated excellent (V) in conformation; this noble girl was as beautiful as she was functional. She produced one litter of DKs which earned a Breeder’s Award. Yes, she passed on her outstanding attributes to her pups, including the female (Anni) we kept. It was through Hella that I met some outstanding people; actually, many outstanding people. But, I cannot thank my friend, Tom Skinner, enough for laying the ground work for Hella to come to America and her German breeder, Ferdinand Schlattmann, for sending me one of his outstanding puppies. The match could not have been any more perfect than it was. Hella was sinew tough! No hunting condition was too difficult for her and she survived one serious hunting injury and health issue. But, old age was to be her downfall as it is for many of our canine companions. When her body couldn’t go anymore, I had to make the decision. As the serum did its job, Hella enjoyed one last treat as I held her head and stroked her with compassion. As her light went out, I had fulfilled my last responsibility of the bargain. There is a significant empty feeling at home since the loss of my outstanding canine companion, Hella. But, the cupboard is far from empty. Her daughter, Anni, granddaughter, Belle, and great-granddaughter, Caydee, carry on the tradition of exceptional home/hunting companion dogs at our home. Our ‘C’ litter selection, Caydee, was to be the dog that would fill the vacancy left by Hella. As a puppy, Caydee’s favorite sleeping place was in my lap. And now that she is too big, she rests her head in my lap as we relax on the dog couch after the sun has retired for the day. I truly believe she favors either a football or baseball play that involves running. A N Alike M the N others, E W S has also discovered the magic AndCCaydee, drawer at the office. I am a lucky man. This DK “show case” test of field and water is held every other year in Europe; this test alternates with the Kleemann. The first portion of the event features a Zuchtschau. Test results follow this short report. If you can’t find time to travel to Europe to participate in this test, you and your DK can participate in the NAKP (North American Kurzhaar Prufung) that is held in North America on even numbered years. The test will be held in Michigan this September. This, like the IKP, is an invitational test and in order to qualify, your dog must have a Prize 1 in both a spring and fall breed test and have an adult conformation of SG or V. The NAKP is the identical test to the IKP. As a former organizer and participant of the NAKP, I would encourage any DK team to participate in this prestigious event.
