two-fold mission; provide high quality horse shows for the equestrian community
and, in doing so, giving back to the larger community via contributions to charities
who can really use their help. We appreciate all who came and showed their support for The Center and the children and families of the Hudson Valley.

“There’s No Excuse for Child Abuse”
Gala and Silent Auction
This years annual
“There’s No Excuse for
Child Abuse” Gala and
Silent Auction was a huge
success. Held on May 7,
2015 at the Villa Borghese, Wappingers Falls, NY,
the gala proved to be a
fun and enlightening experience for all who attended. The Center was
proud to honor the
Kaplan Family Charitable Foundations, who
have done, and continue
to do so much for the families of the Mid Hudson
Valley. Our Executive
Director, Kathleen M.
Murphy, spoke on the
subject of advocacy and
how important it is for all
of us to do our part. All
together we raised
$98,000 to help
fund our programs and provide for our program families.
Thank you to all
who participated
in this event.

Personal Safety Program
Our Personal Safety Educators
provide sexual abuse prevention
education to more than 11,000
children in elementary and preschools throughout Dutchess,
and now Ulster Counties. Educators provide age appropriate Personal Safety presentations using
various media, such as puppets
and informative videos for Prek6th graders in the comfort and
security of their classrooms. In
addition, they provide additional
information to 4th-6th grade students regarding internet and cell
phone safety. PSP implements a
more proactive approach to minimizing instances of child abuse.
By empowering children as
young as preschool age, they
provide them with the necessary tools to protect themselves against predators and
bullies prior to any instances
of abuse. If it has already occurred in their lives, they
help determine whether or
not a report should be made
to Child Protective Services in
order to prevent further
abuse.

Parent Empowerment Program
Through a series of workshops,
the Parent Empowerment Program (PEP) offers a forum in
which parenting ideas are shared
and suggestions offered. Many of
today’s disciplinary techniques
are explored, enabling parents to
determine what works best for
them, and equipping them to better handle a variety of situations.
The PEP program uses the Nur-
turing Skills for Families, taken
from the evidence based, nationally recognized Nurturing Parenting Series. Parents goals for
their children can be identified,
and tools to help them achieve
those goals. Workshops can be
tailored to fit individual needs.
The program in free to those residing or working in Dutchess
County. To find out more, contact
the Parent Empowerment Staff.

child intervention, development of
daily living skills needed to prevent
child abuse and neglect, weekly parenting education classes, assistance
finding appropriate community resources, coordination of services,
tips on stimulating child develop-

“T’s” Story
In our Teen Parenting Program
(TPP) we have many success stories, but our client “T” is a shining example of how well a youth
can do with the support of our
program. She came to TPP involved in domestic violence with
family, and the father of her
child. She was sexually abused
as a child by a family member
and has had family issues her
entire life. “T” was motivated to
change her life for herself and
her child. She completed her
High School Equivalency, passed
her Medical Assistance Exams,
and was able to stand up to her
child’s father, and ask for help to
stop the cycle of abuse. “T” is now
working on her driving skills and
has her own apartment. “T” is
working full time and currently
looking for a second job while balancing all of life’s obstacles. “T”
always knows she can turn to the
Teen Parenting Program to help
her navigate those obstacles.

Our mission is to prevent child abuse in
Dutchess County
The Center is pleased to be leading the Dutchess County Task Force
Against Human Trafficking (TFAHT), along with several partnering
agencies. TFAHT is addressing Human Trafficking in the County by
providing education and prevention information to the community and by
raising awareness. Several trainings about trafficking and how to respond to it will be offered throughout the county by Family Services, Inc.
and Give Way to Freedom. There will be trainings offered to the general
public. Please visit our website frequently to find out the dates and locations of these trainings.
Additionally, TFAHT is currently working on a county wide study to find
out where trafficking is occurring and what gaps in services there are.
The first survey was sent out to 300 service providers with 70 respondents. Here are some statistics from the study:
34% of the respondents reported that they believed that they or
their agencies have worked with potential victims.
57.9% of the respondents that had not received training about
human trafficking reported that they were not sure it they had
worked with potential victims.
Many do not know if they have encountered victims of trafficking. Trafficking includes both sex and labor. Victims of trafficking can be found in
many places including: large events such as concerts and fairs, large construction sites, farms, restaurants, hair and nail salons, hotels and motels. Some victims are even being trafficked by their own family members.
