It’s a scenario we see far too often at Purrfect Pals... A sweet twelve year old tabby cat, Missy, has lived with her loving owner in a wonderful home her entire life. Sadly, Missy’s owner passes away unexpectedly. In an instant, Missy’s life is changed forever. No one in the family can care for Missy. Missy is taken to a local public animal shelter, in hopes she will find a new loving family. When she arrives at the shelter, Missy is given a medical exam, vaccinated, and placed for adoption. Her new home is a large kennel with soft blankets, toys, litter box and food. But this does not feel like home to Missy. The shelter staff and their volunteers socialize her and do their best to ensure Missy does well with her transition. But Missy is depressed, missing her owner and the only home she has ever known. Missy is stressed in the unfamiliar shelter, making her vulnerable to illness, and comes down with an upper respiratory infection. The shelter is full of many animals, and the staff might need to make the difficult decision to start euthanizing cats because of a lack of space. Even though Missy has a great personality and a very treatable illness, the shelter may not be able to treat her for the 2-4 weeks recovery period. Now Missy’s life is on the line and she might be Young Boy came to us barely able to walk due to starvation. euthanized. After two months of TLC in a foster home, this charming boy was back to a healthy weight and quickly adopted! (continued on page 3) PURR the -2- Introducing the Angel Fund! Giving Low-Income Cat Owners a Helping Paw Purrfect Pals is a non-profit, no-kill cat-only adoption organization and sanctuary, helping more than 3,000 cats yearly through adoptions and a free community spay and neuter clinic. We are thrilled to announce that we have created a fund which will allow Purrfect Pals to offer another option for cat owners who are unable to pay for unexpected veterinary expenses. Donations made to the Angel Fund will be used to pay for treatment for cats who are in danger of being surrendered or returned by their owners because of financial hardship. Cats will be treated at outside veterinary clinics in our community who will bill Purrfect Pals for the services rendered, often at a discount. This separate fund will ensure that the care of Purrfect Pals cats will not be impacted. Purrfect Pals 230 McRae Rd. Some call our shelter needing to surrender their cats because of behavior challenges they can’t overcome, changes in living situations, the death of a family member or severe allergies. We take in as many cats as we can and do our best to offer resources for the rest. There are times, however, when our staff receives desperate calls from cat owners who we are unable to help. Some of the most common, and heartbreaking, requests are for assistance paying for veterinary care. Despite the very best of intentions, cat owners sometimes find themselves faced with unexpected veterinary expenses which are beyond their financial means. Often, their only options are to surrender their cat to a shelter like Purrfect Pals or, sadly, to euthanize them. Since Purrfect Pals is an animal shelter, not a private veterinary clinic, Washington State limits the procedures we are able to provide for owned animals to spay/neuter surgeries, vaccines and microchipping. Unfortunately, few other resources are available in our community to help lowincome individuals with their veterinary expenses. The creation of the Angel Fund was made possible by a generous donation made by a long time supporter of Purrfect Pals. This special gift was given in honor of Kovu, her beloved cat, who passed away recently. Kovu’s owner shared with us, “I feel like it is needed and can be very beneficial to cats and their owners. I’ve always felt fortunate that money is not an issue for me in carrying for my cats and dogs. I can’t imagine having to make decisions about a beloved pet based on the cost of the medical care. I know it’s a reality for many people and my hope is this fund can help some of those people and their cats. This would warm my heart and feel like a wonderful way of honoring my baby – my angel.” If you would like to donate to the Angel Fund, please contact us at bookkeeper@ purrfectpals.org. With your help, we will be able to continue to help cats and cat owners in need of a helping paw. These three have been in a foster home since January, learning to trust people. (...Fostering, continued from page 1) The best case scenario is that, when the animal shelter’s staff reaches out to Purrfect Pals for help, we have an open kennel and Missy is saved! Missy is treated for her illness, and recovers fully. Missy is soon adopted by a great family and her journey happily continues. But what happens if Purrfect Pals does not have space at their shelter when that call comes in? What happens to the other amazing adult cats just like Missy? Many of them have very treatable illnesses or parasites that only require a week or two of foster care. Senior cats just need a warm lap and love to live out their golden years. Some cats will just need a dental cleaning or extractions to be considered “adoptable”. Others need treatment for hyperthyroid disease, which will add many years to their lives. Because of budget restraints, most public shelters in our area do not have funding available to provide these services. Black cats are often overlooked by adopters and also tend to be euthanized more often than their more colorful competition. All of these loving cats deserve a second chance for loving homes. Many of them are brought to public shelters due to economic reasons, such as the loss of their owner’s job or home, or a decline in their owner’s health. Other cats are abandoned by owners and left to fend for themselves as strays. The heartbreaking reality is 40-50% of adult cats are euthanized at public shelters in Western Washington. But together we can lower this sad statistic and this is where you come in! Please consider making room in your home and heart and foster an adult cat! Purrfect Pals has partnered with many public shelters in Western Washington to help them save more cats. We also continue to take owner released cats. In 2012, Purrfect Pals placed nearly 1,000 animals into their foster care homes, and most of these were kittens. We urgently need more people willing to foster adult cats, and our goal is to rescue at least 500 more adult cats in 2013. There are real advantages to fostering adult cats rather than kittens; they are litter box trained, they will not destroy your favorite sheer curtains, and they make great companions! If you would like to learn more about fostering cats in need, please email Susan Bark at [email protected] or call 206-719-6992. We can schedule a new foster orientation to fit your schedule, and it only takes two hours. Join us on May 4th in Shoreline for a fun celebration of cats and their quirks! While pomp and circumstance may be a staple of dog shows, you definitely won’t find any of it at the tenth annual Average Joe Cat Show, a fundraiser for the cats of Purrfect Pals. “Rescued” is our favorite breed of cat, so no documentation is required to prove your cat’s lineage. There are no pedigree standards and no Best in Breed awards. What you will find is a gymnasium filled with cute housecats, some begrudgingly dressed in costumes for the occasion. They will be competing for titles such as Most Impressive Ear Hair, Loudest Purr, Biggest Feet and Most Obnoxious Cat. And, since every cat is a winner in our (and their) minds, every contestant who doesn’t win first place will take home a second prize ribbon. If your cat isn’t much of a social butterfly and would prefer to enjoy the festivities from home, there are still plenty of ways for you to participate in the Average Joe Cat Show. This fun, family-friendly event also features a cat photography show, a cat and kitten adoption event, tons of vendor booths selected with cat lovers in mind, Miss Gidget’s photo was the “Best in Show” winner in our AJCS Photo Contest last year! professional cat behavior experts offering up free advice, a kids’ craft table, silent auction, hot dogs (veggie dogs, too!), ice cream and more! Our wonderful team of foster parents at the Monroe Correctional Complex who recently fostered their 500th Purrfect Pals kitten! Created in 2006, this innovative program has been an overwhelming success. Thank you so much to MCC staff members and the Humane Society of the United States for participating in our recent celebration of this milestone! Here are just a few of the Kuranda cat towers which the cats at Purrfect Pals are now enjoying thanks to the generosity of their supporters! Our friends who lovingly donated twentytwo Kuranda cat towers in memory of Toni V. Ripley (1944-2012), their dear friend. Toni loved all animals, especially cats. She donated to all kinds of animal charities, took care of a feral colony that lived behind a store near her home, and would take in a cat if left on her doorstep. PURR the -6- In Honor and In Memory In honor of Ripley’s kittens - Thanks so much for sharing Ripley and her lovely kitties with the world. They provide hours of entertainment. You’re all doing great work. Connie Gerin In memory of Doris (Sue) Tucker Bonnie Howard Cheddar Cheddar was a Purrfect Pals foster kitten 11 1/2 years ago. Bob decided Cheddar was never going for adoption because he was going to be his cat. Cheddar was known as a “squirrel tail” due to how he carried his tail over his back and in a curl, very rare to find a cat with this strange gene. He carried it proudly. Over the years he became our “Social Butterfly”; he never met a stranger, talked constantly and loved to kiss everyone. He won first place ribbons at the AJCS. In his younger years, he answered the phone when it rang and would talk to whomever was on the other end of the line. We had to change phones so he could not knock the phone from the holder. What a huge hole is left in our household and our hearts because of his amazing personality, his constant love giving, talking, running through the house with his buddy Dusty and playing with toys, throwing them to the ceiling. No more kisses and cheek pats at 6:00 a.m. letting us know it was time to get up and feed. Of all the cats we have had and given up, Cheddar was by far the hardest. Cheddar was truly one of a kind, he will be so missed. Mary Cathey In honor of Meisha - Every day I’m grateful to Purrfect Pals for rescuing my cat Meisha! Thanks for making pets available in local stores so potential adopters don’t have to drive to the County Shelter. Nancy Wright In memory of Oreo Sheri Edwards In honor of My Friends from the Cat Planet Patricia Hedtke In honor of Susan Bark - with the greatest of appreciation, and also acknowledgement of the care that you provided for Serena B. Gretchen Cole In memory of my precious, spirited, and smart Sammy. He had a strong will to live, said the Vet, as Sammy survived seven years after being diagnosed with FeLV. He ran the house with velvet paw, and thought he was king of all cats! Sleek and black, loving, and always ready to sit next to me. Cancer consumed his body, but his spirit soars forever. Karen Samuels In honor of Cher, our rescued cat. Sandra Coke In memory of Snowshoe, Dink, and Buster Patricia Colaizzo In honor of Murphy - our dear cat who left this world in December. Purrfect Endings Harriet A couple months ago I adopted a cat from the Purrfect Pals branch at the Kirkland, WA Petco. The volunteers there were great and helpful and made it a painless process. The kitty came to me with the name Rider but my family started calling him Al, and it stuck. I just wanted to thank you for making it possible for the little guy to join my family. He is happy and cuddly and much-loved. I’m attaching a couple pictures - if there’s a way to send them on to the volunteers in Kirkland that would be great. Julie Balazs My husband, Dennis, and I adopted Heidi Klum last Friday. Her new name is Harriet and we are absolutely crazy about her! She settled in so quickly, and was ready to be loved. By Saturday morning she was wanting to come out of her room and explore the house. She met Frank (her new brother) in the hallway. He began hissing and growling, but keeping his distance. Harriet poofed her tail up and strutted right past him. I guess we know who is going to run the show! By Monday night she was laying on our bed. We came in to pet her and Frank decided to join us. He layed on the bed in front of her, about six inches from her face, and we petted them both. That was it, they are now friends:) Harriet has become very relaxed and content in her new home. She does the cutest things. When she gets really excited (usually over getting pets) her tail twitches and her back feet dance. She meows just like a kitten, it’s really cute. She likes to cuddle up with us and wrap her paws around our arms or feet. She smiles with her eyes. All in all, everything is great and we all, including Frank, love her. Heather, Southcenter Purrfect Pals Volunteer Suki Puki is 11 now and when we adopted her, we were told she didn’t like men or dogs! Turns out she LOVES her new daddy, Austin, more than the mommy who wanted to adopt her. And recently, we adopted an 8 week old puppy who is now 12 weeks old. They LOVE each other. Suki still acts like the diva she is and herself taught Banks that it’s her way or the highway. It’s absolutely adorable! I attached some photos so you can see just what we’re talking about! Austin & Keshia PURR the -9- I am writing to let you know Yukon Cornelius and Juliette are healthy and doing well. I picked the two up from you at the event in Everett back in late December. My original concerns that they would not get along due to being from different litters was quickly dismissed: they became immediate best friends and currently they cannot seem to be in separate rooms without missing the other (this can be accompanied by whining and crying if the second is trying to hide). Yukon gained weight rapidly in an attempt to catchup with his adopted sister. He holds his own in the endless wrestling/track and field/obstacle course they play (I do not pretend to understand the rules). They are very affectionate, they love a good warm lap and string toys (paper, boxes, milk jug rings, stuffed mice, and the laser) but they remain each other’s favorite chew toy. Keith Hanke Al Our kitty Seelie is almost two now. We adopted her from the Bellevue PetSmart on December 30th, 2010--her name was Estrella. Seelie is affectionate, curious, and loves welcoming strangers into the house by offering to wash their hair for them (eww, cat breath). She often seeks out the warmest point in the house (heating ducts, or sneaking under the bedcovers) so we will turn an electric blanket on for her. She is fearless--not even afraid of the vacuum cleaner. She does occasionally throw a temper tantrum when she doesn’t get her way, such as when we set the automated kibble feeder down on the floor and don’t put anything in it. We had a friend visit us from China, who was surprised to discover black cats are not popular to adopt in the US.--in China, black cats are considered to bring good fortune, and “magical”. Stacie Scattergood Suki and Banks with their Dad, Austin PURR the -10- Purrfect Endings Eddie & Bella Beverly We adopted Beverly Hills from the Northgate Petco a week ago. We couldn’t have asked for a better cat! She’s sweet, playful, laid back, with plenty of personality. She recently had nearly all of her teeth extracted, but she is adjusting well to it and is learning how to gobble her food again. Her tongue often hangs out because of it, making for great photo opportunities! She even gladly does her daily chores (eye & wrinkle cleaning, brushing, & hairball treatment). We’re both looking forward to years to come with our Bev. Cheers! Marlo and Nick, Bev’s proud parents Doris (previously known as Cynco Vandil) settled in to her new home really quickly and has been the perfect house guest ever since. I had found her profile online and she sounded like a good fit for our family, so i visited her in the store a few days before I adopted her and she was very friendly. However, on the day I went to adopt her, she was out of her cage and mixing with the other cats. She was hiding under the table, hissing at the other cats and took a swipe at one of the volunteers. I was a little apprehensive as I filled in the paperwork and wondered if I was doing the right thing. I’m so glad I went ahead, because she’s been wonderful. I’ve never heard her hiss since. She and the children love each other and she often hangs out where they are playing. Best of all though, she likes to be with me. She’s on my lap purring while I type this mail :) Thank you from us and also from Doris for helping her find her forever home. Jacqui Barnes We wanted to give you an update on our girl “Zooey”, formerly known as Shelby, that we adopted from the Bellevue PetSmart last March. She is so adorable and such a lover. My husband picked her out personally and she definitely favors him as she can often be found climbing on him whenever he sits down. She has gotten big since we got her and she loves to play with the laser more than she likes her Friskies. We believe her past life was as a contortionist as she manages to get herself in some pretty interesting positions and has been featured in many pictures as she can be very photogenic. All in all, she is doing great and is super happy and healthy. Thank You for everything you do for our furry feline friends! Doris Mali Reporting in on the adoption of “Callisto” , formerly known as “Gidget”, adopted from the Denny’s Pet World in Kirkland. She is doing fine. She’s a major faucet drinker and is a sucker for the cat dancer toy. We got her coat smoothed out, and she has claimed spots of the house as her own, and is pointedly ignoring the other cats here but doting on me and my roommates. Thank you so much for bringing the chirping princess into our house. Deunan Berkeley Marla and Dave Boris We adopted Boris (named Bo when we got him) from the Renton Petsmart May 2012. He was 10 weeks old at the time. He is all boy..curious, into everything and has a great time playing chase and tag with our girl kitty Jasmine. He has grown into a beautiful “grey tiger” and we love him very much. I’ve attached a current picture of our beautiful boy. Thank you! The Tipper Fund pays for extraordinary surgeries and vet procedures that demand resources beyond our ability to offer without special help. Here is just one example: of the fur on his head due to alopecia and food allergies. We started Fabio on medication for his skin condition and switched him to a diet of prescription hypoallergenic food but he was struggling with allergies that we could not identify. Thanks to the Tipper Fund, we were able to consult a specialist and had an allergy test performed. When we received the test results, we were surprised to find out that Fabio is allergic to fir trees and dandelions. Poor kitty! Fabio Three year old Fabio is just as handsome as his namesake. This sweet boy was surrendered to a local shelter and transferred to Purrfect Pals missing most Now Fabio is receiving monthly allergy shots which were formulated specifically for him. Our next step will be to find a family for Fabio that will continue his treatment long term. Now that he is feeling so much better, he will make a wonderful companion! You can help Purrfect Pals save the lives of cats and kittens in need! If you would like to make a donation to support the Tipper Fund please email us at [email protected]. Sponsor Jesse! Sixteen year old Jesse came to Purrfect Pals after his lifelong owner died. His kidneys are starting to show their age so Jesse is living in our founder’s bedroom and loves cuddling with her in bed.
