Thanks to Internet Celebrities Oskar the Blind Cat and Klaus, Purrfect Pals is receiving 100,000 cans of cat food from Friskies! In December, the cats at Purrfect Pals received an amazing holiday gift from our generous friends at Purina: The news that we would be receiving a donation of 100,000 (yes, one hundred thousand!) cans of Friskies cat food! Even better, we had two very special rescue cats to thank for the donation: Oskar and Klaus! As part of their “If You Feed Me” holiday promotion, Purina and Friskies selected five internet celebrity cats to promote canned food for kitties. Each spokescat, (including Oskar the Blind Cat, Colonel Meow and Grumpy Cat) was asked to choose one deserving cat rescue organization to be the recipient of the 100,000 cans of food. Oskar, who recently moved to the Seattle area with his buddy Klaus (and their owners, Mick and Bethany Szydlowski), wanted the food to go to a no-kill facility with plenty of hungry mouths to feed. We were ecstatic to be selected, and by a cat as famous as Oskar! After returning from a trip to Los Angeles to promote this exciting campaign (and the release of a music video starring the five furry celebrities), Oskar and his Donate Your Vehicle to Help Cats Are you considering buying a new vehicle this year? Instead of trading in your old one, consider making it a tax-deductible donation to support the cats at Purrfect Pals! Our partnership with Donate for Charity, a nationally known vehicle donation program, makes it nearly effortless for you. A call to Donate for Charity is toll free at 1-866-392-4483 or you can visit their website (www.donateforcharity.com) for more information. Many thanks to those of you who have already donated a vehicle to support our cats! Did you Adopt from Purrfect Pals? We love hearing updates on Purrfect Pals cats after they have been adopted. If you would like to share your kitty’s story with our staff, volunteers and foster parents, please email your update to us at [email protected]. Founded in 1988 on the belief that every cat matters, Purrfect Pals is working to end cat homelessness in Puget Sound communities through placement and prevention. There just aren’t enough homes for cats in our area, and we are helping change that. Our cat adoption and rehabilitation programs help place homeless cats, including those with special needs, in loving homes. We work to prevent cat homelessness through our free community spay and neuter clinics, humane education programs and cat owner support initiatives. Austin’s passion for cats, positive attitude and strong project management and customer service skills make him a great asset to the Purrfect Pals leadership team. We recently began a large scale construction project at the shelter so our Executive Director, Connie, is thrilled to have him by her side! Purrfect Pals 230 McRae Rd. April 26th Seattle Pet Expo Seattle Center May 10th The first of twelve monthly shipments of canned food from Friskies arrives at Purrfect Pals. (...FRISKIES, continued from page 1) entourage headed to Arlington for a tour of Purrfect Pals. Kirk Boxleitner, reporter for the Arlington Times, asked Mick and Bethany what they thought of our facility. “It looks like we chose the right organization,” Mick said, as he fetched Oskar out of his cat carrier to explore the cat towers and other furniture of the sanctuary’s adoption room. “As Meet Oskar and Klaus In Person! busy as you are, you’re obviously fulfilling your mission,” he told Connie Gabelein and Kathy Centala, the Executive Director and Founder of Purrfect Pals. Storage space is limited at our modest Arlington shelter, so the 100,000 cans of Friskies food will be divided into twelve monthly shipments. The first two were delivered in December and January and are already being enjoyed by our cats! In addition to high-end dry food, all of the cats in our sanctuary eat wet food daily. We’ve learned not to be late with dinner at Purrfect Pals! This generous donation will help feed more than just the cats at Purrfect Pals, however. We provide a pet food bank for low-income cat owners in our local community and will be able to provide meals for many hungry cats, both owned and feral, thanks to Oskar and Purina. We will also be sharing some of the food with our partner shelters and rescue groups in the area. Oskar and Klaus will be joining us at the Average Joe Cat Show on May 10th! Be sure to stop by their booth to meet them and check out their awesome line of cat toys! Constance Perenyi It is with great sorrow that we tell you Minnie passed away today from old age and hyperthyroid disease. Minnie was our first connection with Purrfect Pals almost 16 years ago in May of 1998. We drove out to Purrfect Pals one Sunday on the recommendation of Arden Clise. We had only started thinking about adopting a girl to balance our two bachelor male cats and wanted to see what PP was about. Kathy practically forced this adorable, tiny, sickly calico cat on us because she didn’t stand a chance at the Shelter with her respiratory infections. Her estimated birth date was the end of February, so she was twelve weeks old and no bigger than a six-week kitten. In truth, it was an easy sell: we were smitten by this beautiful girl, who sneezed and wheezed, and fell over in the process. Our bachelor boys immediately accepted her, and what was going to be a temporary foster became part of our family. She acquired the rest of her name (Perle, because she was a pearl; and Mesta, because she became our house hostess). Minnie was featured in the slide show Dennis prepared for the first ever Black Cat Ball. We like to think that it was Minnie who helped make that first Black Cat Ball a success and funded the clinic so that the spaying and neutering didn’t need to go out of house any longer. It was Minnie that hooked us on Purrfect Pals. We fostered our first litters of motherless kittens in 2000 and our household grew to six cats eventually. Minnie remained our only girl and forever our princess. She was dignified, dainty and independent but always friendly to everyone. As is the fate of hyperthyroid disease, hers was controlled for about a year with medication but it eventually got the upper hand. Her age didn’t help her cause either. She passed away at home, peacefully. We are ever indebted to Purrfect Pals for matching us up with Minnie. Dennis and Carol In Memory of Bobby, a little black and white cat. After 3 years, he is finally starting to venture into my lap occasionally for very small amounts of time, but is often found curled up close to me on the couch. He always wants to know where I am in the house, and what I am doing. George has plenty of windows to sightsee out of, and even has a girlfriend (neighbor female cat) who comes to the front door to chat with him. I’m so glad that I waited until I found the right cat to adopt (and no question, George is the cat for me), and so grateful for all that Purrfect Pals did for him before we connected. He was at the shelter from about April 2010 until January 2011 when I adopted him, and I can’t imagine my life without him. I know that he’s remembered as being a “forceful personality”, and he is definitely that, but he’s endlessly entertaining, and very loyal. -Kate (and George) I wanted to give an update for George (AKA Ryder George), who I adopted three years ago from Purrfect Pals. He’s about 12 1/2 now, and definitely king of the house. I continue to watch his kidneys carefully, and get his teeth cleaned regularly, but he’s doing well, and no thyroid problems (he is one of the cats who underwent the thyroid treatment before he was adopted). George is a very loud, vocal cat, and isn’t shy about letting me know if he wants attention... or food. Purrfect Pals called him Ryder George, but he answers to George, turning his head and On December 7th, my husband Tony and I adopted Maggiano, a.k.a Magic, from the kitten adoption event at the Everett Petsmart. For those who are unfamiliar with him, he was the little orange kitten that was found at 5 weeks old up at a trailhead in Darrington, covered in maggots and half-dead after a possible hawk attack. He has a new name now, Angus, and he is such a wonderful addition to our cat family. He has a new best friend, our 4 year old Crab, as well as our 16 year old, Lirp (who was also adopted at Angus the Everett Petsmart about 5 years ago, she was known to Purrfect Pals as Beegee). Angus is such a friendly and playful kitten; his foster family, in addition to the prison foster program, did an excellent job. He is extremely spoiled and loving his new forever home! He is the perfect fit for our family and brightens every moment that he is with us! -Natalie Love Purrfect Endings? Join us on Facebook for more updates! www.facebook.com/purrfectpals PURR the -10- Purrfect Endings Preston I just wanted to send you all a quick update- we adopted Preston from the Issaquah Petco just over two years ago and what a blast he has been!! He has grown into a big 14 pound kitty, and yet I still call him my baby kitty. He is leash trained now, and still loves boxes (when we were signing his paperwork he was playing inside of a box). He has been a wonderful addition to our household, and while him and our senior kitty have occasional “sibling run-ins,” they like to cuddle when we are not looking. Many thanks to you and all of your volunteers!! I pray that every kitty would one day be as happy and spoiled (shhh....don’t tell Preston that!!) as our kitties. hungry young black tomcat. We named him Major Tom and watched carefully to see how Sumi would react. Somewhat surprisingly Sumi wasn’t TOO hostile, although he’d been Top Cat for 5 years. Major Tom is goofy, sweet, outgoing, non-aggressive and loves attention. HE is the lap cat. They do fight and tussle, there is growling and yelping but never real intent to hurt. They love to chase and ambush each other. Sumi now even allows Tom to sleep cuddled up close to him. The two are so entertaining, fun and surprising. They keep each other company while we’re out. Two cats ARE better than one, if they can work out their differences and coexist peacefully, as much as two tomcats (both neutered, of course) ever do. Luckily our two have complementary personalities. Sumi is our second purrfect Pals adopted cat. The first was the incomparable, late Panther, adopted back in 1991. -Deborah and Bob -Corey We have enjoyed our gorgeous cat Sumi since 2005, adopted at a Purrfect Pals Black Cat event at the Black Cat Antique shop in Snohomish. He is a joy to watch every day, with his fluffy, slightly kinky black fur and lanky build. He’s an affectionate companion, rather shy of strangers and loves his routine in a mostly quiet house of two adults. However, our petting time is strictly limited. Sumi (named for the Japanese word for “smoke” or “ink”) allows contact on his own terms. Makes the moments of affection all the more precious, as he well knows. HE will come to YOU. Last summer we adopted another cat from a friend who was moving to another city and couldn’t take him along, an active noisy Blossom Lindi Avenue In October I adopted Mab (formerly Avenue) from Purrfect Pals in Northgate. My favorite cat died after 16 years last December, and I wasn’t looking for another, especially since I still have his elderly sister, Ace, to care for. But while I was buying food in Kirkland in August, Mab murrred at me quite loudly from the adoption center. I haven’t been murrred at in a very long time. So I went over and said hi. And I did the same the next week. And after a few weeks of talking about it and vacillating back and forth, I brought the Significant Other in to meet her. And then we came back to see her the next week... and she was gone! The volunteers explained that she had gone back to Arlington for medical care. And I thought that was that. But I guess I wasn’t quite ready to give up on her, because I looked her up online later and tracked her down to her new location in Northgate, and then trekked all the way across the lake to bring her home. I was expecting a transition period. At least a few months before she settled in. But Mab is not that kind of cat. She was purring the moment she came out of the carrier. She was very indignant about being in quarantine the first two weeks, and the moment she was let out, she settled on my bed and declared it her property. She sleeps on my feet every night now and follows me everywhere, chattering constantly. She has an insane amount of energy and spends hours hunting for the toys I hide from her and dragging them to wherever I am with triumphant howls. She curls up on my chest and *hugs* me (see photo below). She has even been perfectly civil to my older cat. It’s like she’s always been part of the family. Thank you so much for taking care of her until she found me, and thank you for letting me bring her home. She is the most wonderful giant fluffy crazy cat and I adore her. -Emily In October, my boyfriend an I adopted our first cat. We knew we wanted a cat who was playful and friendly. We had gone into the Purrfect Pals Lynnwood adoption center several times before making our decision. One evening, there was a new cat there who had been moved from another Purrfect Pals location. As we stood looking at the cats a little paw reached out and touched the side of my leg. When I looked down I was greeted with the most curious green eyes and from that moment on I had pretty much made up my mind, this was the cat for me. Luckily my boyfriend felt the same. We were informed that her name was Blossom Blue and she had been in the Purrfect Pals shelter system for almost two years! She had no known health problems but, due to her advancing age (she is 10 years old), she was being overlooked. After a few days of contemplation we adopted Blossom and it has been one of the best choices I have ever made. She is so playful and full of energy. No one who meets her believes she is 10. She is a very friendly and sweet cat who will run to the door as soon as she hears you come in. She is an endless source of laughter in our home. She is always doing something funny, playful or sweet. I cannot express how happy I am that this cat did not go to a kill shelter and was given so much time at your facility. -Gina Zevon, a gorgeous and fascinating Bengal, has become an important part of our family since we adopted him from Purrfect Pals about a year ago. He sings good morning to us, perches on the tops of curtains, does tricks (like “sit”) for treats, and has trained us to play special Bengal games, like Waterfall (he runs around in the bathtub until we turn on the water). This outdoor pen, which we built in one weekend for less than $200, has given this active cat a great outlet for his energy & curiosity. He goes in and out through a cat door in one of our closets and enjoys jumping around on the shelves and watching the wildlife. We like keeping his cat box out of the house, too. I’d encourage others to offer this to their cat(s). It’s a win-win, just like Purrfect Pals! -Nancy PURR the -11- Meet Some Wonderful Cats! Here are just three of the special cats we have living in our Arlington Sanctuary. All three are available for adoption or sponsorship. Email us at [email protected] for more information. Dior Princess Shamara is an eight year old girl who came to Purrfect Pals from another shelter. She sure gave us quite a scare when she first arrived! She was very depressed and stopped eating, forcing Dr. Morgan to give her a feeding tube. Eventually she discovered a love of tuna and is now back to eating and playing. She is living in our shelter office until we can match her up with an adopter who will appreciate her opinions and occasional “love nips”. She really is a sweet kitty, though! Boyfriend Claire Eleven year old kitty Dior Princess came to Purrfect Pals after her lifelong owner moved away and left her behind. She is a loving and quiet cat but does NOT appreciate the company of other cats. She lives in our kitchen and breakroom and enjoys “helping” our staff and volunteers make (and eat) their lunches. If you ignore her she will not hesitate to lick your pants. Don’t ask us why. :) Five year old Boyfriend is FIV+ and was found living on the streets. He is a very affectionate and fun kitty who loves to tell you all about your day when you visit him. The other cats in FIV Land are picking on him a bit so we hope we can find him a “permanent foster” home soon. If someone is willing to take him home and love him forever, we can continue to provide his medical care at our shelter clinic. It’s win-win!
