First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg Letter from Joanne First News July 2014 A friend of mine is a serious quilter. Sometimes, when she is working on a new quilt, she will show me the pieces and say, “Look at my quilt.” She shows me hundreds of small pieces of different colors of fabric and lays them all out on the floor. I squint and try to imagine what it will look like after everything is sewn together and the quilting is done, but I have trouble seeing what she does. She sees what it will be. I see what it is now. She is excited about what it will look like. She doesn’t apologize because it isn’t really a quilt yet or say that it’s foolish of her to believe it will be beautiful someday. She calls it a quilt and works continually toward that end, confident that eventually it will be exactly what it was intended to be----a beautiful work of art that will keep her family warm and remind them of her love. We do the same thing with our lives that she does with her quilts. We squint and try to imagine that we can see it as it could be. But too often we let the vision fade with the first mistake or obstacle. We give up trying because we don’t trust that something good could really be accomplished in us. Trusting God to make something out of us can be difficult. But little by little, we can begin to believe that God wants to make a work of art out of you and me. He invites us to trust Him to sew us together beautifully. Not only does God want to make a work of art out of each one of us, but he wants to do that with our church. He is taking all the different pieces of our church with all its diversity of people and activities and is making a beautiful work of art out of us, a patchwork quilt of the highest craftsmanship. The question is do we have the courage and the will to allow God to mold us and sew us? ...continued on page 3 Contents Page 2 Sunday School Page 3 Welcome Colleen McCullough VBS Mission Update Page 4 Welcome New Members Page 5 Calendar Page 6 Youth Events Informational Gathering on General Assembly Page 7 SPHIN Needs Volunteers Page 8 Pastoral Concerns Page 9 VBS Thank You Back Summer Sizzle Bill’s Book Club 393 East Main Street ~ Spartanburg, SC 29302-1917 ~ (864) 583-4531 ~ www.fpcspartanburg.org Sunday School (9:00am) Children and Youth Nursery (Birth-2K) 1st Floor Clark Building Preschool (3K-5K) 1st Floor Clark Building Elementary (1st-5th Grade) 2nd Floor Clark Building Youth (6th-12th Grade) 2nd Floor Family Life Center Summer Adult Sunday School Series 9:00am each Sunday in the Chapel (Memorial Day through Labor Day) Sunday School This year we will once again offer an Adult Sunday School program in the Chapel during the summer months. Continued from page 1... There are lots of days when we do not want to be sewn or shaped or molded or pushed or stretched or encouraged to be something other than what we are at the moment. It’s so comfortable to sit still. We want to say,“Things are better than they used to be, Lord. That is enough. Don’t make me try anything else or do anything else. We don’t need that or we don’t want to go there or we don’t want to do this.” Welcome Colleen McCullough as our new Director of Recreation! But when we trust God through Jesus Christ and follow him, even where we do not want to go, we discover a more abundant life, filled with precious moments and people that we would not trade for anything. And it is all because we allowed God to sew us into place. I am so happy that God has sewn me into my place beside you at First Presbyterian Church here in Spartanburg. July 1st marks my one year anniversary with you and what a year it has been! You have welcomed me with open arms, encouraged me, helped me, affirmed me, tolerated me, laughed with me, been patient with me, and made my first year with you something very special in my life. Thank you ever so much for being my partners in ministry. I look forward to our next years together as God continues to sew us together in love as time and experience deepen our relationships with each other. May all of us trust God more as individuals and as a church to allow him to continue to make us into the beautiful and vibrant piece of art we were always intended to be together. Gratefully from One of Your Pastors, Your Friend, And a Work of Art in Progress too, Joanne VBS Mission Project Was a Weighty Success! The 2014 Vacation Bible School mission project was a weighty success! The children and our members donated, sorted, weighed and packed over 311 pounds of markers, crayons, notebooks, paper, pencils, backpacks, tissues and more. These items and a check for $809.00 will be presented to the administration of Districts Seven’s Cleveland Academy of Leadership in July. Colleen joined our staff on Monday, June 2 to train with Robert Bannan before his departure for seminary. Colleen is a graduate of Winthrop University with a degree in Exercise Science. She has extensive experience as a personal trainer and wellness coach, and she has served as coach for youth athletic teams. Her approach to recreation ministry and fitness focuses on connecting people to each other to enhance the enjoyment and accountability of wellness training, with the goal of individual and community health. She has proposed several family and multi-generational recreation programs that will be a wonderful addition to our congregational life. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this project so successful! Please join us in warmly welcoming Colleen to our staff! Benefit Concert Sunday, July 27 - 2:00pm What Does the Bible Say About Dreams? “Dreams in the Bible - Dreams Today” Sunday School Class August 3 and 10 9:00am in the Chapel “In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon mortals, when they slumber on their beds, then God opens their ears.” Job 33:15-16 ÄÄ Our sacred text, the Bible, records hundreds of dreams and visions in both the Old and New Testaments that provided insight, direction, and solutions to problems. ÄÄ Why should we spend time with dreams that often reveal bizarre, strange, unexpected people, places and things? ÄÄ What’s in it for me to attend to my dreams? Many traditional cultures believe nightly dreams are vital to physical, mental, and spiritual health. For more information, contact Betsy Adams ([email protected]) or Betsy Cox ([email protected]). The concert will be held at Fort Hill Presbyterian on Sunday, July 27 at 2:00 p.m. and is free to attend (CDs of this concert will be available closer to the holidays). A light reception will immediately follow. Please come out to support this most meaningful cause. For more information, please call 864/283-6080. T YTERIAN CH ESB PR U H These classes will: ÄÄ Identify dreams and visions in the Old and New Testaments ÄÄ Describe the purposes dreams served in the early Judeo-Christian world ÄÄ Discuss dreams today: the nature and structure of dreams ÄÄ Identify ways to work with our dreams ÄÄ Discuss formation of a dream group that will meet twice a month (dates, times, days to be determined). Margaret Mackey and Anda Moble present “Christmas In July,“ an instrumental performance to benefit InDwellings, Inc., a public non-profit organization, that is working to establish and maintain “Homes of Love” for adults with developmental disabilities. C R ÄÄ Dreams are considered by modern medicine and psychology to be “the very guardians of sanity” (Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Society, April 1965). ÄÄ Dr. William Dement told the American Psychiatric Association in 1960, “We believe that if anybody were deprived of dreams long enough, it might result in some sort of catastrophic breakdown.” ÄÄ Even when we don’t remember our dreams, we are still experiencing dreams nightly. Banner Sponsorship Form First Presbyterian Church will hold its annual Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans Worship Service in October of 2014. At our Kirkin’ service, we remember ancient times, as well as past and present kith and kin, while asking God’s help and blessings in the future through special music and a procession of bagpipes and tartans. The construction of the staffs and stands as well as the sewing of the banners will be performed by volunteers, but we need sponsors to help with the cost of purchasing the tartan fabric and staff materials. The cost of a banner is $115. The tartan fabrics are ordered from Scotland, so we need your payment no later than Thursday, July 31. hh Some clans have multiple patterns available. If you want a particular pattern, please indicate below. Otherwise, we will order the most common pattern for that clan. hh You will receive an acknowledgement of your order and payment. hh At the conclusion of the service, the tartan banners will be given to the sponsor for storage or display until the next Kirkin’. Only the staffs and banner stands will remain at the church. 2014 Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans Banner Sponsorship Form Name: ______________________________________________ Address: ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ Phone: ________________________________________________ Clan Tartan _______________________ Pattern ____________________ Please forward this form and check for $115.00 to: First Presbyterian Church ~ Kirkin’ Fund 393 East Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, Attn: Lynise Clarke If you have any questions or wish to confirm which tartans have already been purchased, please call David Tate (699-5103). Thank You to VBS Volunteers and Everyone That Made Donations First Presbyterian VBS It is thrilling to be caught up in Pentecost winds. As the Spirit sweeps through places, events and people, we are humbled and inspired to be a part of the whole thing. If you were a part of Vacation Bible School this last month, you know what we mean. How can we ever say “thank you” to those who were a part of that inspiring event? The foundational planning was flawless. It began in January and included VBS leaders for the past four years. The leadership was careful, thorough and thoughtful. We had an abundant response to our request for help. How many volunteers did we have? How can we even count? There was the art director who planned two whole days of projects for our Mission VBS’ers. But do we count all of her friends who patiently cut out shapes, and collected objects for her projects? There was a huge paid nursery staff (we had 40 in the nursery,) but do we count the one who refused to take her pay and returned it as a gift to the VBS project? There were volunteers who searched Pinterest for ideas and cut cardboard until their hands ached. There were volunteers who worked all spring to gather supplies, think creatively and haul in snacks, art supplies, science experiments, sets for stories, flannel boards, musical instruments and more stuff than we can name. AND THEN THEY HAULED IT OUT AGAIN!! We might know their names, but how can we know everyone who helped them and kept their kids while they worked? People ran all morning in the hot sun. People cooked with children in a kitchen with sharp objects. Some people operated the technical equipment that scares other people. People sang, danced, crouched in a puppet stage and wore silly hats all for the love of our kids. How do we thank them all? If we try to thank individuals, do we count those who mopped up our considerable mess each day? Do we recall every member who brought in school supplies before and after the event? How about the ones who wrote checks? Do we name all of them? No, it is better to say, “Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise the Pentecost God who swirls us together and promises to be in and among us. Praise God who accomplishes through us that which we could never do alone. Thank God for this wonderful community of faith.” And if you doubt that the Spirit showed up, check out the video on Facebook—or better yet, join us next year. Blessings, Mary Elizabeth Evans and Callie Hammett Co-chairs Arcadia Elementary VBS What a great Workshop of Wonders week we had at Arcadia Elementary! It could not possibly have happened without all our amazing and dedicated volunteers! Saying thank you is just not enough to express our appreciation for the love everyone shared with these fun, outgoing, energetic children. We had lots of new faces out there this year and are so glad for these brave “first timers” as well as our long time, ever dedicated volunteers! What a team you all make! We branched out and tried new things this year! We developed a Mission Program for the rising 5th graders and they spent time at Magnolia Place Nursing Home, Habitat for Humanity, The Hope Center, The Soup Kitchen and the Chapman Center. We also started a Camp at First Presbyterian to entertain and teach the children of our volunteers so that we can now offer this great experience to a larger part of our congregation! As chairpersons, we feel so blessed to have so many diligent, self-motivated and Godmotivated volunteers to make this week run so smoothly. When we are able to stand back and watch how efficiently and effectively everyone works with the children, we know that this is God working through every volunteer! Our deepest heartfelt thanks to everyone who was involved in Arcadia Elementary’s Workshop of Wonders this summer! You have truly touched the hearts of every child that attended, and we hope that they have touched yours.
