Marching Chiefs Instrument Campaign Brochure
2 DID YOU KNOW? Our Director of Athletic Bands, Dr. David Plack, was a member of the Marching Chiefs during Dr. Dunnigan’s first year at FSU in 1991. A Message from the Dean M embers of the Marching Chiefs are transformed by their experience on the field and in the stands as they represent the best of FSU through inspired performances week after week. Alumni, friends, and audiences everywhere feel the power of the Chiefs exemplified by their superb musicianship and precision showmanship. I ask your support for the Marching Chiefs instrument campaign as we strive to keep that Seminole sound in top form. This year we look toward purchasing new brass, especially those mellophones, baritones, and tubas that rock the crowds every game day. Please consider a contribution, large or small, that will go directly toward shining instruments for one of the greatest band programs in the nation. We are ever grateful for your generosity. Go ‘Noles! Go Chiefs! Patricia J. Flowers Dean, College of Music 3 A Message from the Director O ur Marching Chiefs dedicate themselves to two primary goals: supporting the team, and bringing first-class halftime entertainment to Seminole fans. At every rehearsal, and at every game, our students give 100 percent effort in pursuit of the standard of excellence established by our alumni decades ago. Now we are stepping up to provide 100 percent support to the Marching Chiefs. We have recently upgraded our rehearsal field and storage facilities, and now the time has come to upgrade our instrument inventory. Our instrument inventory has not been thoroughly updated since 1991. In fact, we are still using many instruments that were obtained in 1974. This is in stark contrast to many of our peer institutions that replace and update instruments every decade. Our students deserve top quality equipment that will allow them to sound their very best. If you believe, as I do, that the Marching Chiefs are a vital component of our athletics, our cultural life, and our campus, then please help us with your contribution. Your tax-deductible gift to this instrument campaign will be used exclusively to ensure that we keep the sound of the war chant ringing strong throughout Doak Campbell Stadium well into the future. I thank you in advance for your support. Go ‘Noles! MCATDT, Patrick Dunnigan Director of Bands 4 DID YOU KNOW? The Marching Chiefs were the first college marching band to make a compact disk. The year was 1991 and the title was “Our Best Foot Forward.” Revae C. Douglas Class of 2014, Saxophone, Jacksonville B eing a Florida State University Marching Chief became a dream of mine in the ninth grade when I first saw them perform. I am so grateful that Marching Chiefs has been a part of my life and I cannot imagine my time at FSU without it. This organization has given me many once in a lifetime experiences, many of which have helped shaped me into the teacher that I am today and will benefit me in my career as an educator. The experience has created life long memories that I shall cherish forever. Marching Chiefs has become a family that means the world to me. Together as a family, we devote nearly 17 hours per week and knowing that our team, fans, and community appreciate us makes every hour worth it. It is truly an honor to be a part of an organization that is constantly making Florida State University history and leading over 80,000 fans in cheering on our Seminoles on game days. 5 DID YOU KNOW? Since 1989, the Marching Chiefs have averaged well over 400 students every season. Daniel Rosman Class of 2014, Clarinet, Bonita Springs F or me, Marching Chiefs is much more than just a marching band. After the first football game I experienced as a Chief, and possibly even before that, it became something much bigger. Through Marching Chiefs, I’ve found something incredible. My roommates and best friends are in Chiefs. I’ve been reassured a thousand times over that I want to be a teacher, thanks to Marching Chiefs. I’ve fallen in love with music, over and over again, because of Marching Chiefs. To support our Seminole Athletics and to represent Florida State University is a feeling unlike any other. Managing a schedule full of classes, schoolwork, rehearsals, and more is a difficult task for any student, but all the stresses of that melt away quickly at the sound of just the first few notes of the “Hymn to the Garnet and Gold.” The beautiful thing about Marching Chiefs is that I’m sure every single Chief feels the exact same way. 6 DID YOU KNOW? Chiefs vote for the drum majors every spring at the Garnet & Gold game. Drum major is the only leadership position determined by student vote. Michael Keogh Class of 2014, Baritone, Orlando M arching Chiefs for me, is all about the people and the memories. It’s an experience that not many people get to have. The rush of pregame, blasting the warchant right in the ears of the opposing offense to help with that third-down stop right at the goal line, playing the hymn after the clock hits zero, all of these moments will be ones that are kept forever and will no doubt be the highlights of my college career. The people I have met have become friends, best of friends, roommates, therapists, and most likely my future groomsmen if that’s is any indication of how important these people are to my life. Auditioning for the Marching Chiefs was the best decision I have ever made, I wouldn’t change a thing if I could go back and do it all again. 7 THE CAMPAIGN FOR NEW INSTRUMENTS Please consider supporting the Marching Chiefs by donating at one of the suggested amounts below, though gifts at any level will help us meet our goal.
