AUGUST 28th, 2016 The shiny black limos pull up to the curb, where the spotlight focuses on the car while flashbulbs pop as the occupants emerge. It could be Oscar night USA, or Tony night, Emmy evening, or the night of the NFL draft. The country and the world watch the goings on. Some viewers, I’m sure, insert themselves into the scene, as they dream of their possible futures as stars. There were no big cars around, or spotlights shining down for the arrival of the Man of the Hour that long ago day when Jesus of Nazareth showed up for dinner. He would have nixed any showy elements for the occasion anyway. He was not like that at all. Nevertheless, a crowd had arrived for the event, as crowds always do when a celebrity shows up. From a distance, we also watch, these many centuries later. St. Luke puts us there at the unnamed Pharisee’s house. We are fascinated by whatever things Jesus does, because our faith tells us He is our supreme Rabbi, our God. We already feel a bit squeamish, because in His very humility and gestures reflective of it, He dismisses much of what we post-modern Americans hold as the marks of greatness as mere trivia. This evening He is all about humility. We can only guess that the other guests at table were the movers and shakers of their day, and they won’t like what Jesus has to say. But He will say it anyway, for He has no fear of what other people think. He tells them how to act at the next banquet they attend, and even where to sit. He then adds a list of invitees to any banquet they should intend to host. What is this elusive virtue humility all about? To begin with, it has nothing to do with self deprecation. Rather, it is all about truth, and the belief that we all spring from the “humus” or “dirt” of the earth. And no matter how we decorate our bodies or inflate our importance, we all end up in a casket. Everything we are is a gift of a God who loved us into existence because He believes we were worth it. With the co-operation of our parents came our genesis and our genes. We are destined for eternal life when God decides our time on earth has run out. So we admit our need to live dependently on Him as His adopted sons and daughters. We should never take ourselves too seriously in the process. We are also to have a consistent attitude of thanksgiving to the God who loves us so much as to give us the Mass and His personal presence in our little lives. Of course, there always seems to be people who think differently from Jesus. The following is a case in point. The Los Angeles Times published a story of a commercial airline flight cancellation which resulted in a long line of travelers trying to get booked on another flight. One man in the line grew increasingly impatient with the slow-moving line. Suddenly he pushed his way to the front and angrily demanded a first class ticket on the next available flight. “I’m sorry,” said the ticket agent, “but I’ll have to first take care of the people who were ahead of you in line” The irate man then pounded his fist on the ticket counter, saying, “Do you have any idea who I am?” Whereupon, the tick- et agent picked up the public address microphone and said, “Attention please! There is a gentleman at the ticket counter of American Airlines who does not know who he is. If there is anyone in the airport who can identify him, please come to the counter.” Hearing this, the man retreated, and the people waiting in line burst into applause.
